05:34How's it going?
05:35Good.
05:36How are you doing?
05:36I'm great.
05:37This is such a treat to be here.
05:39I really love listening to all these performances all night, so I feel very honored to be included.
05:43It's been a wonderful evening.
05:44And thank you to you.
05:46And all of you and all of you and all of the fellow performers, you've had a busy night.
05:49I saw a picture of you, I saw a picture of a movie premiere, I saw a picture of a
06:19movie premiere
06:47involved in the show.
06:49it took place in this country club and um the characters relationships with each other and
06:54crafting sounds and so then it started and they shot for the first several months of 2025
07:00and then here we are in the you know middle of spring in 2026 so yes you're right and he
07:06said
07:06your music over the last decade has sort of informed the way he works he's telling you that
07:11you know he clearly wanted to work with you what was what was he saying to you what was the
07:16sort of
07:16approach that he said he wanted you to take i mean i think that it was it was um
07:22the song choices were so clear and we were talking about these characters sort of
07:26to me the kind of thing that i really wanted to to to convey was this sort of like idea
07:33of like
07:33your place in the world and the world's perception of you and your relationship with the people around
07:39you and your love life and um the kind of grappling with your own insecurities of like you know am
07:46i not the sort of protagonist of this story am i an you know this adversarial relationship that
07:52the characters have with each other um a lot of the the sort of songs that are um included in
07:58the
07:58season are things that were like very important to me personally in in the you know 2010s that
08:03sonny had picked out that i was like wow these are like how to play our way into and out
08:08of these
08:08great songs by artists like yeah so he gave you the this the songs that were going to play out
08:13each episode there's a lot of lcd a lot of hot chip m83 and then in particularly in episode two
08:19it's heads will roll by the yeah yes that's an amazing um song that i was like oh this is
08:25going
08:25to be you know i wanted to really do that that song justice when it came in yeah because then
08:30you
08:30are creating the theme for for the rest of it right that's right yeah yeah it felt like it had
08:34to
08:34sort of harken to whatever that foreboding energy that that amazing song um you know sort of
08:40puts in me i was like i want to really have it feel that way for the rest of the
08:43season
08:43yeah am i right in thinking you you read a couple of the scripts and then pretty quickly wrote vicious
08:47thoughts which we heard a little bit of um you know starts with this beautiful piano and then it
08:52gets pretty violent there's almost a sort of violent synth sound yeah i mean i just started writing
08:57things that felt like they would reflect what i felt the characters were going through while i was
09:02reading the scripts and visiting set and you know seeing these amazing performances from oscar isaac
09:08carrie mulligan and um charles melton kaylee spaney and um yeah vicious thoughts which is the final
09:14portion of the music that we played um it's just this melody that it felt like this very sort of
09:19pure
09:20optimistic slightly sentimental thing hopefully and then i just wanted it to just become this
09:25cacophonous sort of violent sound with the same melody that you'd been introduced to
09:31um and so i sent that over to sunny while they were shooting the first several episodes sunny was like
09:37i know where this is going to go which by the way i just want to say i apologize if
09:42anybody in
09:43the room has not seen all of the season yet for spoiling any of the season i feel i feel
09:49guilty for
09:49that but just wanted to include the amazing footage absolutely you mentioned oscar isaac part of the
09:56plot of the the show is him playing this moog synth um but he's clearly not very good how do
10:03you
10:03approach that it was a real uh gift from the script because the script had this this man cave that
10:10josh's character is in full of sort of maybe like slightly regretful purchases sports paraphernalia and
10:17a very expensive vintage synthesizer and so there were sort of moments of of josh's character lost in
10:25the music that he was playing um so we started writing that and then it was like oh he's gonna
10:29play
10:30this piece of music in in uh episode two write something for him to be playing and uh i was
10:37like writing something that i was like wait a minute like let me pretend to like have never
10:41touched the synthesizer it was a really fun uh challenge and then of course oscar isaac who's
10:45like good at everything like you've seen inside lewin davis or something like oscar probably could
10:51have played a much better synth part than i gave him but i thought his character josh should suck
10:58at playing the moog yeah you and oscar can play josh however can't yeah oscar's a very talented
11:04person yeah talking of synths i love the quote that you you found a synth that sounded like a swarm
11:10of
11:10bees that is true i mean i thought like you know the times like i live in la near like
11:15a golf course
11:16and i like you walk by and you hear all of this kind of rhythm in nature you hear like
11:20the the sprinkler
11:21system going like and and i wanted that sort of to be part of the sort of stressful tempo of
11:29the show
11:29and then you know found these sort of synth patches that if i turn the envelopes and change the cutoffs
11:34and then i took the like little uh pitch bend thing on the nord and wobbled it it really sounded
11:39like bees and it just really stressed me out to to play and i was like well it stresses me
11:44out it'll
11:45probably stress everybody out so it does um you mentioned there there's this sort of theme of
11:52of nostalgia about these different generations is that was what you were working with well i think
11:57that you know um i was literally talking to somebody here in the in the preamble and they
12:03name dropped somebody and i said to them like oh is that jeff's brother i grew up singing in a
12:09choir
12:09with jeff's son and the person went wow that makes i'm really dating that makes me feel old
12:15and i think that there's so much of that in the world is like we we we experience things so
12:21profoundly at first you know the first time you um see a film or hear an album especially if it's
12:27a
12:27new album that just came out and then years later it takes you back to where you were when you
12:33first
12:33heard that record and then somebody's like it's the 25th anniversary of this album and you think
12:40like oh my god and you're like that's the 25th anniversary of me being 15 um so i think that
12:48that
12:49element of the of these characters sort of thinking about their past and their future and your past is
12:55written and your future is uncertain and kind of trying to be like is there anything i can learn from
13:00this and that's really you know to me that's the the sort of profound quality of the end of this
13:05season is this kind of like cycle of your life in the world yeah music plays such a big part
13:10of that
13:11doesn't it absolutely um you made your tv composing debut i understand with disclaimer and now now beef
13:16is this a world you enjoy is this a world you like to to play in i mean it's certainly
13:21a world that i'm a
13:22enthusiastic audience member of i just am such a fan of um film and television i mean like
13:29you know subconsciously as a little kid but then as i got older i remember like being like 15 and
13:36my
13:36friend and i learning the house of cards theme on piano and playing that little and so i think
13:43that anything that i'm a real true deep fan of if i get an opportunity to participate i just feel
13:50very honored so that's how i feel i hope you get plenty more opportunities please give it up for
13:54phineas o'connell thanks for having me
13:56you
