This week on Bob Eats Boston, I head to Carl's Steak and Sub on Prospect St, Waltham.

I asked listeners to recommend the best sub, and Carl's was mentioned over and over. I ordered the "Giambotta" steak and cheese. It was huge and delicious.

00:10in wonderful Walfam because listeners have been telling me about Carl's. And we asked,
00:18hey, who makes the best subs around? Numerous people mentioned Carl's, so let's check it out.
00:23Okay, we're inside Carl's with the owner of Carl's, Eric.
00:27Yep. Right? Eric, who's Carl, by the way?
00:30Carl's a long history of a name, but my grandfather was Carl.
00:35Okay.
00:35And I have a brother, Carl, who was named after my grandfather, which never was really in the business.
00:39You never was?
00:40No, but it is a family name.
00:42But Carl probably likes subs, right?
00:44Carl likes subs, yeah.
00:44He doesn't. Okay, so Eric, you're the owner and manager at the store?
00:48Yep, the owner.
00:49And I'm impressed with how busy it is. We're here kind of early for lunch, and it's been nonstop traffic. Crazy.
00:55Yeah, we've been here. She's opened up in 1981, so we've been here 43, 44 years.
01:02And yeah, we've done steak and cheese from the beginning, and it's just kind of a staple in the area.
01:07Okay, so I asked our listeners, what is a great sub shop in Boston for this show?
01:13I know numerous people mentioned Carl's, and they also said I have to have the Giambatta.
01:18Yeah, the Giambatta.
01:19I mean, we have so many different subs.
01:21That's probably the one, if you like everything in it, peppers, onions, mushrooms, sausage, pepperoni, tomato sauce.
01:27I mean, you can't go wrong with any sub you get if you like the ingredients in it.
01:32And we have a bunch to choose from, from teriyakis to chapotes, to just a whole array of steak and cheese.
01:40Okay, I'll try the Giambatta.

01:42Yeah, let's do that.
01:42We might get some tomato sauce or some steak or some cheese dripping off gin.
01:47You know me.
01:48There's no doubt about it.
01:50I'm talking about myself.
01:51Same, brother.
01:52Well, here it is, the Giambatta, which I understand now is everything but the kitchen sink.
01:59And if I keep looking, I might find the kitchen sink in this thing.
02:03Look how much that's the steak.
02:05And on top, you got pepperonis, peppers, onions, mushroom.
02:10It is a mega steak and cheese.
02:13Going in for that first bite.
02:15Oh, sausage as well.
02:20Oh.
02:22Wow.
02:26I got no words.
02:27Giambatta.
02:28Now I know why they call it that.
02:29It is everything I was hoping it would be.
