00:00Police Commissioner Alistair Guevara has declared that he holds no political allegiance and has never voted in a general elections.
00:09Speaking on I-95 FM on Monday, Guevara says that he has maintained a position of neutrality since joining the special branch in 1998.
00:19What I want to say publicly here today, and I hope that this is the last time I could put this thing to rest.
00:25Having entered the special branch in 1998, I recognized early that in order to function in this department, you had to be apolitical.
00:38And I took a decision at that point in time, Mr. Enoch. I have never voted. I have never supported a party and I have always been blasted for that throughout my career.
00:47Guevara explained that his choice not to participate in elections was based on the need to serve whichever government was in office.
00:56If government changes tomorrow, I must now have to answer to the new government and I must be apolitical in everything that I do.
01:03I cannot, having gone to the polls on Monday, voted and my party won or lost and then go and serve our next party on the next day.
01:10That would make no sense. It would make me hypocritical.
01:13But I do not blast my colleagues who choose to exercise the democratic right. That is my personal stance.
01:20Guevara also responded to criticisms directed at him online.
01:2410 or 11 persons with the four or five fake profiles online. Yes, you know them well, Mr. Enoch. You see them.
01:31And the nice part about it, they are now, what do we consider them? Facebook has a label for them because they are trolling anything that has the name Guevara on it
01:40and throwing a negative political spin on it because they want to paint me as being politically aligned.
01:46Trinidad and Tobago, I never voted my life. I have no intention of voting. I do not partake in any political process.
01:54And I am here to support you, not any particular party. I am here to support you, Trinidad and Tobago.
01:59The commissioner emphasized that as the head of the TTPS, his role is to align with lawful government policy while upholding the law.
02:09Guevara says he hopes that his comments could end any speculation about political ties.
