PNM to hold internal election in June and Pennelope Beckles confirms her intention to vie for political leadership of the party. However, former Prime Minister Stuart Young did not respond to the question.

00:00By the end of June, the People's National Movement will no longer be without a political leader.
00:07This follows decisions taken by the leadership on Monday to convene a special general council
00:12this Friday to consider the leadership's recommendations relative to the PNM internal
00:18elections. First off, the leadership recommended the PNM's internal elections be held by the end
00:25of June 2025. They also recommend all national executive positions be contested. The leadership
00:32also proposes the internal elections be open to all party members in Trinidad and Tobago using the
00:40one-man, one-vote system. And finally, they suggest election supervisory committee be established to
00:47manage the conduct of the elections, including the review and issuance of the final electoral list
00:54as well as the code of ethics for the internal election. While one hat for sure is already
01:01counted in the ring, opposition leader Penelope Beckles confirmed with TV6 News she will be
01:07contesting the position of political leader. There has been no indication thus far if she will vie
01:13uncontested. We asked the opposition leader if she will be offering a slate, but she did not respond
01:20up to news time. Additionally, messages were sent to other executives and former executives like
01:27former Prime Minister Stuart Young, Foster Cummings and Dr. Nian Gadsby-Dolley. They did not respond
01:33to queries on whether they will be contending.
