00:00I'm 67 years old. I do not work anywhere and now Mortgage Finance want me to go and borrow money from the bank to pay off for here and I cannot do that because I'm not working anywhere.
00:24Have they offered any special provisions to you at the facility as you move to mortgage?
00:28No. I would say no. For months I've been having to deal with constant harassment from people for mortgage finance. Different people keep calling me. When I told them I cannot afford to go into a mortgage because I've reached a retirement age, they turn and ask me, any one of your children could do it? Or what about one of your family members?
00:51The agency was never able to fulfill the end of the agreement.
01:03The agency was never able to fulfill the end of the agreement. That is, securing the proper title for this property, this very beautiful property. I mean, we're happy with our homes.
01:24Yeah. So now that that has happened, they finally, 18 years later, they've now received title to the property and they're now demanding, hey, I don't want your $2,000 a month again, which you've been paying me for the past 18 years.
01:40They said, it has become our practice. I want full payment. Go and get a mortgage. And if you don't, based on this 2007, 2008 letter, clause three and clause five, we will evict you.
01:53The letter says, to do so is not only illegal, given the time that has elapsed and the conduct of parties, but such an action is high handed and an abuse of power.
02:15So paraphrasing, basically 18 years, we've been practicing paying you all the money. Now we might have three more years to complete and now you want to send us to the mortgage company or evict us if we can't pay.
02:29However, when contacted, Housing Minister David Lee said, as line minister, he was not aware of such a directive. He's assuring all HTC tenants that, quote, this government is a caring government and that he will thoroughly investigate the matter.
02:49Renasa Cutting, TV6 News.
