00:00Overflowing sewage. It's a problem for at least two residents of the HDC development Oasis Green's Endeavor Phase 2 Shaguanas.
00:08But the main issue as far as I was told from HDC employees, they said that the line collapsed.
00:16While the residents didn't want to go on camera, one of them tells us that since she got her home
00:21in 2017, the sewage problem has been there.
00:24But according to her, it moved from being once every six months or so to becoming more and more frequent.
00:54If the cesspit is just full.
00:55But residents say HDC is fully aware of the problem as they, along with WASA, have repeatedly visited the development
01:02to clear the lines.
01:03The homeowners are frustrated that those interventions appear to be a temporary fix and they no longer have the patience
01:10to endure it.
01:11There are other times too where I would have paid a plumber because then HDC is saying, hey, we don't
01:16service or do maintenance on units that are mortgaged, etc.
01:21So, um, so while money spending doing that, this matter is still going on.
01:27We are going on what almost 10 years now.
01:29Meanwhile, Woodford Street residents are battling a similar issue.
01:33According to Sheldon Lewing, who sent us footage, apart from the stench, there are bacteria and other organisms from the
01:40overflowing sewage.
01:42He says it's a health hazard.
01:44Within the last two months, right, we've had, I've had two floods in my apartment.
01:50Um, no, it's not flood water.
01:52It's actually sewage water, right?
01:55It's from the drains being, uh, backed up from, guess what, oil.
02:00He believes that oil is coming from businesses in the area.
02:04So WASA has to send a whole team, ever so often, to unclog a f***ing manhole.
02:13A manhole that's overflowed with f*** water.
02:16Lewing says WASA has been attempting to rectify the problem for the past week, but it is still unresolved.
02:23He's calling for stiffer fines for indiscriminate dumping of waste into public sewer lines.
02:28Lewing says businesses have a responsibility to the communities in which they operate,
02:33noting that as it stands, residents are the ones suffering loss, including financial.
