Member of Parliament for Laventille West and Attorney at Law Kareem Marcelle is accusing the Government of political cleansing.

He says the mass dismissal of workers attached to the Unemployment Relief Programme and other state initiatives is the act of a vindictive administration.

This comes after more than 300 URP workers were fired on Wednesday in what Government insists is part of its restructuring drive to root out corruption.

00:00The Lavental West MP says this is not just a red herring, it's a UNC herring.
00:06Kareem Marshall told the Morning Edition there are other ways to deal with people
00:11being paid without showing up for work, but mass firings are not the answer.
00:16It would be to first report it to the Trinidad and Tobago police service and it would also be to
00:23immediately stop the pay of these persons who are essentially not coming to work and dismiss
00:29those persons.
00:31What we have seen is a broad approach which I deem as political cleansing from a wicked,
00:40deceitful and evil government who since they have taken their oath of office have only sought
00:50to fire poor and vulnerable working people of this country.
00:57Marcel says the government itself has boasted that PNM supporters helped deliver its April
01:03election victory, but he's now asking why target them.
01:07He argues that anyone suspected of being PNM or not aligned to the UNC is being fired.
01:13Even the minister of local government made a public statement prior to the election that
01:21there were CPEC workers from her constituency who were hiding and coming to their meetings
01:27and they really wanted to support the UNC and they voted for the UNC, but of course they
01:32had to hide in between.
01:33So if you are saying there's a whole nation rally behind you, including PNM members who supported you,
01:40then why are you waging war on these very same poor and vulnerable PNM people that you are playing?
01:46Marcel says he has credible information that members of the constituency executives of the
01:52United National Congress have already submitted recommendations on who should be fired from the URP,
01:58which positions they want removed and who should now be placed in those roles.
02:04He is calling on the local government minister to clear the air on the allegations.
02:09I want to ask Minister Amin this morning if she would deny that that is in fact taking place in the UNC executives right now.
02:21So if you are saying that the PNM would have engaged in actions where persons of the political
02:27arm may have been recommending these persons to the different jobs within the URP and you
02:34are trying to cut out that and you don't want it to be partisan, then where is going to be
02:39the advertisement for the 600 plus positions in these regional offices?
02:45Efforts to reach the minister for comment were unsuccessful.
02:49Nicole M. Romany, TV6 News.
03:19So I'd like to thank you.
03:37So the Cabinet has agreed to the upgrade of wireless access solutions for primary schools and secondary schools.
03:44for primary schools and secondary schools.
03:47This government has prioritised the integration of technology in schools.
03:52This is to improve teacher training, to modernise the curriculum
03:56and to prepare our students for the future.
04:00The use of technology in education allows for improved student productivity
04:06and leads to enhanced learning outcomes and efficiency.
04:10This project, implementing an upgrade of the wireless solutions
04:17at primary and secondary schools, has a dual aim.
04:21It seeks to address the inadequate wireless connectivity
04:24across the nation's schools through the expansion of bandwidth
04:28at 125 government and government-assisted secondary schools
04:33and the installation of network access points
04:37at the 454 government and government-assisted primary schools.
04:44So as part of the project, the Ministry will establish
04:49a national minimum internet bandwidth standard for all secondary schools,
04:53setting the baseline service at 500 megabytes per second download
04:59and 250 megabytes per second upload.
05:05And in addition to the installation of network access points
05:10at all 454 government and government-assisted primary schools,
05:14there will be a structured implementation of the cabling
05:21and commercial-grade wireless access points.
05:25And what does this do for us at the Ministry of Education?
05:29It will enhance and allow the Ministry of Education
05:33to remotely monitor and manage wireless access
05:37across all schools, ensuring functionality.
