00:00According to Steelworkers Union President Timothy Bailey, it has been 10 years since
00:06ArcelorMittal closed its operations in Trinidad and Tobago. He says some employees had dedicated
00:13up to 36 years of service, yet none has received severance packages to date. Last Thursday,
00:21Bailey called on government to intervene, arguing that the ongoing liquidation process
00:27appears to be failing. Today, he renewed his plea for government assistance.
00:33Please look into the situation. Please intervene. You are now in control of the governance of this
00:39country and you can rectify the situation. This situation has reached a point where it's untenable.
00:46Bailey says some companies appear to be receiving preferential treatment while workers continue to
00:52be sidelined. Speaking on the TV6 morning edition, he laments that employees are not benefitting from
00:59the process. He is making a fresh call for government to implement legislative changes to ensure that
01:06workers are protected and to prevent a repeat of this situation.
01:10Bailey says he is aware that Natuk submitted a paper outlining proposed legislative amendments,
01:32which Bailey tells us has the consensus of both employers and unions. However, he notes that the
01:39recommendations were never brought before parliament. According to him, the former administration seems
01:45to have lacked the political will to see the changes through.
