A call today from the President of the Sustainable Climate Resilience Initiative for an urgent meeting with Works and Infrastructure Minister Jearlean John.
Edward Moodie says the residents were blamed and neglected for 9 years, and he's ready to work with the new government to make things right.
00:00According to Edward Moody, 220 feet of riverbank has been missing for 18 months to date.
00:08However, Moody, who is also the head of the South Oropuch Riverine Flood Action Group,
00:13says their pleas to the former government fell on deaf ears.
00:18Today, he tells TV6 the flooding can be prevented.
00:22When you hear somebody tell you that we cannot fix flooding, this is a small island state.
00:27That is a lie. In South Trinidad, I am telling you, it is going to take about a billion dollars over a period of time,
00:35and we could solve our problems. Why is it?
00:38He is calling on government to assist.
00:41Ms. John, I am making an appeal that we have to meet.
00:44And Ms. Amin, I think on the 26th we will be meeting, and let us take the discussion from there.
00:49We have all the solutions, you know, from retention camps, where to open the river, where we should get new rivers.
00:56He tells us, residents of Woodland are frustrated, and they are ready to pack up and sell off their homes.
01:04Moody stresses, though, the flooding problem is not the fault of the residents.
01:08The water that floods onto Woodland is not from Woodland.
01:14It is the bank is always breaching with the water coming from Moruga and Barracore.
01:19You are telling me, we have people selecting $50,000 a month in the ministry, as engineers, and some of them even more.
01:27And they cannot design a bank like what Diana is doing.
01:30When contacted by TV6 via telephone, Works and Infrastructure Minister Julian John said she is open and willing to meet with the residents to hear their plight and find a resolution.
