00:00Let me ask you this before we go to the phones.
00:03How much better than the Saints do you think the 49ers are?
00:07I would say a touchdown better.
00:09All things flat level considered equally.
00:12Okay, and how many points per game is Brock Purdy worth to you?
00:16He's probably worth, I would say, three to five points.
00:21I mean, Vegas is trumpeting what you're saying.
00:23I guess my point is, it's funny to me that the Niners,
00:30they're like, oh, they're a seven-point favorite against New Orleans.
00:34And you're like, yeah, but they don't have George Kittle.
00:36All right, but they'll still beat them.
00:40Probably don't have Juwan Jennings.
00:42No, they'll still beat them.
00:45Okay, they don't have Brock Purdy.
00:47Well, they'll still beat them.
00:48Could we ever get to a point where you think the Saints would win this game?
00:52Yeah, you're getting close, sir.
00:53If the Saints are a bunch of people that you think would be backups on the 49ers,
00:58why are the 49ers now not the Saints?
01:00Because a bunch of backups are playing.
01:02Because you still have an elite running back.
01:05You've got one of the best left tackles ever.
01:07And your defense, I haven't heard a lot of names on the defense
01:10that you're going to be missing.
01:11No, although they are one game in,
01:16and a lot of those young guys were like, okay,
01:19there's some good moments, some bad moments.
01:21Cooper Cupp dropped a pass,
01:23and Sam Donald fumbled a football,
01:25and blah, blah, blah.
01:26Like, all I'm saying is, do you all think the Saints are an NFL team?
01:31Yeah, sure.
01:32I mean, they're in the league.
01:33Yeah.
01:33But if you want my power rankings of the 32,
01:38I don't need to give you all 32.
01:39I'd put the Saints probably at 29, 30.
01:42That's totally fair.
01:44I guess my point is,
01:45is here's how I'd answer the question we're asking.
01:49What are your expectations now that Brock Purdy's unlikely to play?
01:53My answer, I have none.
01:55I have none.
01:56I do not expect them to win this game on Sunday.
02:00Now, I wouldn't say I'm expecting them to lose either.
02:03Right.
02:04But I think that this is completely getting naked and starting over.
02:11Go back into your closet and start your outfit from the beginning.
02:16Yes, I disagree.
02:17You've got a backup that you're paying a lot of money to,
02:20and you at least have socks and underwear on.
02:22Yeah, but money doesn't.
02:23What does money do?
02:24Forget the money.
02:25He's making his 50th start.
02:27This is not a guy who is inexperienced or a rookie.
02:30You're not turning to a guy who hasn't been there and done it.
02:34He's started playoff games, for crying out loud.
02:37Right, but there's a reason that those last two teams moved on from him, too.
02:40Like, he started 50 games.
02:42It doesn't mean he played well in them.
02:44Well, he didn't play always terribly.
02:47And what, he got moved off of from Jacksonville.
02:50And, you know, he was always going to be their backup.
02:53So, Jacksonville was never fancying him as a starter.
02:56And New England, he got three years,
02:58and he was pretty good the first year.
03:01And then, oh, boy, not good, and then really not good.
03:04So, yeah, that's why he's a backup.
03:06Last two seasons, he has started 18 games in the National Football League.
03:11Yeah, 18.
03:12Teams won four of them.
03:14Yeah.
03:15Four.
03:16Four and 14.
03:17That's his record over the last two years in the National Football League.
03:21But, you know, I'm not telling you they can't win.
03:24I understand.
03:25Yep, good defense.
03:26Salah, Christian McCaffrey.
03:28Here we go.
03:29You know, yay team.
03:31Would you say that this Niner team is better than New England two years ago
03:35and Jacksonville last year?
03:36Not right now.
03:37Not right now.
03:38Not right now.
03:39I would say absolutely right now.
03:40I don't even know how we could say that.
03:41We've watched them for one game.
03:43I don't look like last year doesn't matter.
03:46I'm not looking at just the one game.
03:48Like, I'm looking at last week and I'm like, eh, you won, but don't ask me to walk around
03:56and be like, yeah, that was impressive.
03:58Like, no, it wasn't.
04:00You don't have to peacock it, but you're one of 16 teams that could go undefeated.
04:03No doubt.
04:04And they deserve credit for that.
04:06I'm not ripping them either.
04:08I'm just like, I think the 49er peacocking and the word expectation really comes from history.
04:14It does not come from anything that's really based in reality or based off of what happened
04:19last week.
04:20I disagree.
04:20The reality on which it's based is the laminated play sheet and the guy who holds it, Kyle Shanahan,
04:27and Robert Sala, who has been recently a head coach and he's a great defensive coordinator.
04:32So that for me is where my faith mostly lies.
04:36Am I expecting Jake Tonjes to have a kiddle game and go nine catches for a buck 30 and a tud?
04:42Of course not.
04:43But it's up to Kyle, and I have faith in Kyle, that he can scheme up something using the players
04:49that he has.
04:50Maybe Garendo gets a chance to run the ball.
04:52Maybe it is Jordan Watkins.
04:54I don't know.
04:55This is where Shanahan in, I know he doesn't call himself a genius, but this is where he
05:00really earns his keep when you have to get creative without an all pro tight end and your
05:06$53 million quarterback.
05:07It's a very fair answer.
05:09However, I would just say that in sports, we've watched this tons and tons of times over
05:15and over, and in fact, I think was it you who, during the crossover, said, what is Shanahan's
05:21career record with the 49ers when Brock Purdy and Jimmy Garoppolo are not starting at quarterback?
05:26Nine and 32.
05:27Okay, so great.
05:28Winning percentage of 220.
05:30His play calling was in those games, too.
05:32And Robert Sala was in a lot of those games, too.
05:35It's true.
05:36If you do not have good players, you do not win in pro sports.
05:39It is a nuanced thing, and, you know, you look at the beginning of that stat, and they
05:45went 1-10 the first year, and then they went 3-10 the second year.
05:49So it's kind of loaded, back-loaded to when the team was actually really, really bad.
05:54And then the other ones, a couple years ago, where you sat almost all your starters, and
05:59you lost with Darnold.
06:00Darnold was 0-1.
06:02That counts.
06:03And Trey Lance was 2-2, and beyond that, Dobbs, same thing.
06:07You started him just because it was the end of the year.
06:10Brandon Allen got thrown to the Wolves in Green Bay, I believe, last year.
06:14Yep, and that game was over in two minutes.
06:15So there is context to this number, I think, that lends itself to the positive.
06:19Like, last year is a great example, and I know.
06:22A lot of the Niners were hurt, and eventually it wasn't a good team.
06:25It wasn't a good team even when Brock Purdy started for it.
06:28But they put their backup quarterback in last year.
06:30They couldn't even function.
06:31The game was over in two minutes.
06:33Right.
06:34You're talking about the Green Bay game.
06:35Two minutes.
06:36Over.
06:37Like, you could see it.
06:38The game started, and you're like, oh, never mind.
06:40I mean, we spent all week, like, well, maybe.
06:42No, never mind.
06:44Never mind.
06:45Absolutely and completely overwhelmed right away.
06:48So, look, the Saints, I do not think are a good football team.
06:52And so I'm not predicting that that's going to happen.
06:55I'm just telling you, I have no flipping idea what to expect.
07:00And Mac Jones, in the last two seasons, has started 18 games,
07:03and his team has only won four of them.
07:04So, yeah, no, he didn't have the surrounding cast in those games that this is.
07:11But this isn't really all that wonderful of a surrounding cast right now either.
07:15He's got a wonderful running back, but receiving core banged up, tight end, brand new.
07:20Highest paid edge rusher, Hall of Fame tackle, and a Hall of Fame linebacker.
07:26I'm talking about our offense.
07:27I'm talking about the totality of the reason why they beat Seattle.
07:31Put the special teams aside, because that should be a part of complimentary football.
07:36But they beat Seattle because the offense kept the ball, the defense was fresh,
07:40and the defense got the hell off the field.
07:43So, can you do that to New Orleans, even if you don't have Kittle and Brock?
07:47I think absolutely you can.
07:49888-957-9570.
07:51Let's start with Jonathan in the city.
07:52Hi, Jonathan.
07:53Thanks for the call.
07:55Hey, thanks for taking my phone call, guys.
07:57Drop off maybe a little bit, because, you know, timing.
08:01Brock is really good at throwing the guys open.
08:03So, that might be an issue there.
08:06But moving forward, man, this Brock, every time he takes a big hit,
08:10something in him breaks.
08:11It's like the police siren, man.
08:13Hey, they better address the offensive line issue next year.
08:17Draft offensive line all over, you know, the draft.
08:20And they're going to have to replicate Troy Aikman's 1990s offensive line
08:25with Kevin Gogan and Stepnowski and Nate Newton, because, man, Brock can take a hit.
08:30He takes a hit.
08:31He's not going to be able to fulfill this contract, because he just breaks all the time.
08:35I think it's not even an argument that he's injury-prone.
08:38Jonathan, Jonathan, stop right there.
08:40You're one of our favorites.
08:43You're going to need to say that again with your chest.
08:45The man, in his first year, made it all the way to the end until you had a UCL injury
08:52in the NFC title game.
08:54The following year, they went to the Super Bowl.
08:56Did he miss any games that year?
08:58Did he miss any?
08:59Just the one where they sat him.
09:00Okay, the one that sat him.
09:03And then last year, he only missed two football games, and one of them, if it had mattered,
09:09we were told he would have played.
09:11You're going to tag the guy?
09:13Injury-prone?
09:14Do you know how, like, if Brock were sitting here next to you, he would be very offended
09:18by that?
09:18I do not.
09:20You said it's no argument.
09:21I disagree.
09:22It's absolutely an argument.
09:23I don't think that's a fair label at all.
09:26Well, we only had him four years.
09:30He got injured three times, Mark.
09:32He's missed four games in four years.
09:36That's not, I mean...
09:37Yeah, but because of injuries.
09:39Right.
09:39And taking a big hit.
09:40I mean...
09:40Quarterbacks are going to take a big hit all the time, Mark.
09:42Jonathan, so you're saying, like, what about all the hits he took?
09:46How many games has he started in his career?
09:48About 40-something?
09:4950?
09:4937.
09:50How many, like, what about all the hits in all those games that he did take?
09:54And he did play.
09:57Okay, but I'm just saying, man, they better build that offensive line.
10:01Because I don't want him taking hits, Mark.
10:02Well, nobody does.
10:03I get that.
10:04Jonathan, thanks.
10:05This hit, I'm just watching it right now.
10:08It's right before the two-minute warning in the second quarter.
10:11And the offensive line wasn't the reason why he got hurt.
10:14He scrambles, and Love comes over.
10:17Julian Love comes over and kind of half-tackle, half-pushes him out of bounds.
10:22And Brock's foot just went, bam, into the grass.
10:25And he gets up.
10:26He's not even limping.
10:27So, I don't know if the thing got worse over the course of the game.
10:30I didn't see a limp.
10:31Or overnight it got worse.
10:33I don't know if this is going to be one that's going to keep him out a long time.
10:37No, I'll say this again, though, too.
10:39Another day goes by, and I am more impressed by the game-winning touchdown throw again.
10:46Because now he did it with turf toe.
10:49You want to call it turf toe?
10:50If you want to call it turf toe, we can.
10:52If you want me to, I will.
10:53Do you want me to?
10:55Yeah, I do.
10:57I do.
10:58I got to figure out how to handle this.
11:01Help me handle this.
11:02Help me figure out how to handle it when fans of the team, any football team,
11:10not just the 49ers, when we do this thing about, like, guys are not,
11:15either they're not tough, they can't take a hit, they always get hurt.
11:19And then football players will literally come on every show in America and go,
11:24injury rate, 100%.
11:25We all get hurt every single year.
11:27Very few of us play all the games.
11:29And then we tuck that into our analysis and start labeling people.
11:35I really do not, I do not.
11:37Do you have to be a homer?
11:38No, this is not a homer take.
11:40You know, like, you're going to, you want to call Brock Purdy injury prone,
11:43Grandy?
11:44Do you like that label?
11:46No, I'm just poking folks.
11:46Okay, we're good.
11:48I don't, like, I do not prefer that.
11:50That's not fair.
11:51It just depends on.
11:52It's not fair.
11:53If you want to talk about prone, for me,
11:55you would have to look at a pattern of seasons where games are missed due to
12:00other sorts of injuries, variety of injuries.
12:04And, you know,
12:04it would have to be something you really looked at and charted.
12:08Aaron Rodgers missed an entire season when he tore his Achilles.
12:12Does that mean he's injury prone because he missed 16 games?
12:15Or is that just a one-off where you look at his overall durability?
12:19Josh Allen's one I was looking at earlier.
12:21And the guy just doesn't miss a game, really.
12:24He's crazy.
12:25And he's a guy who is, you know,
12:27running between the tackles and getting all kinds of hits.
12:29And he's just built different.
12:31So I wouldn't look at Brock Purdy,
12:33who has been available for about 94% of the games since he became the starter.
12:39That to me is not, you don't get the prone label.
12:42It's like, for me,
12:43this has been my favorite quarterback to compare Brock Purdy to over the last
12:47couple of years.
12:48And when I say compare,
12:50I want to be careful because this quarterback is way better than Brock.
12:54I would take this quarterback over Brock.
12:56It's not even close.
12:57But the criticisms that you hear people fire at Brock Purdy,
13:02this player I'm about to say,
13:04all of the criticisms apply to him even more.
13:07Even more.
13:08His name is Joe Burrow.
13:09Is he injury prone?
13:11He'd been knocked out for a season twice,
13:14and he's only played in the league for five years.
13:16Out for the season twice.
13:18And then last year,
13:20when he put up unbelievable stats all over the place,
13:24they still didn't win games.
13:27Even though quarterbacks,
13:28I'm told,
13:29are supposed to put their entire team on their back.
13:31And when things aren't going well around them,
13:33it is on them to grab the team,
13:36stick them in their back pocket,
13:37and carry them to the finish line.
13:39And he too didn't make the playoffs last year.
13:42That's my favorite example.
13:45Whenever people start coming down Brock Purdy's road.
13:47Yeah,
13:48and that's where,
13:49it's such a flawed phrase,
13:51injury prone.
13:52So,
13:52Brock Purdy gets hit,
13:54and he tears his UCL,
13:56which was,
13:56it was a big hit,
13:57direct on the elbow,
13:58and that happened.
13:59It was a little bit fluky,
14:01and I don't think that it was reflective of him
14:03being fragile or brittle.
14:06That was just the way that went.
14:07You mentioned Burrow with two different season enders.
14:10Well,
14:11they both happened fairly deep in the year,
14:13so
14:14he only missed six or seven games in those seasons
14:16because he got hurt late.
14:18So,
14:19Brock Purdy gets hurt in week one,
14:20and so
14:21now we're going to tag him with injury prone.
14:24We don't even know
14:25how long he's going to be out.
14:26I'm not going there.
14:27Let's go to,
14:27let's go to Max Zach in Oakland.
14:30Hey, Max Zach,
14:30what you doing?
14:32Hey,
14:33fellas.
14:33How's it going?
14:35Max Zach?
14:35Okay.
14:38Yeah,
14:38well,
14:38anyway,
14:39I played college football,
14:41and I've had turf toe before,
14:44and what I know about turf toe is
14:48they'll give you a quarter zone shot
14:49right before the game.
14:51So,
14:52I think
14:53if you listen to
14:55Kyle's recent press conferences,
14:58he's getting a little
14:59turst,
15:00a little salty.
15:01You know,
15:01we've watched him grow from
15:03just inexperienced
15:05coaching to
15:06a curmudgeon,
15:08and he's just turning into,
15:10you know,
15:10a regular
15:11football coach.
15:13So,
15:13it's a bit of gamesmanship.
15:15You know,
15:15just like
15:16when
15:17McCaffrey,
15:20he was in limbo
15:21as far as
15:22was he going to play or not.
15:24He's doing the same thing
15:25with Purdy.
15:26So,
15:26you think Purdy's playing
15:27this weekend,
15:28Max Zach?
15:31If
15:31it is
15:32turf toe,
15:33we do call it
15:35turf toe,
15:36I believe so.
15:38You know,
15:38when I
15:39went into a game,
15:40I played for
15:41a little background,
15:43Laney College
15:43and Cal State Hayward
15:45when we had a football team.
15:47But
15:47right before the game,
15:49I was on crutches.
15:51I couldn't walk.
15:52And then they gave me this
15:53quarter zone shot
15:55and he told me,
15:56it's going to feel like
15:56you got a rock
15:57in your shoe.
15:59I couldn't push off.
16:00I played wide receiver.
16:02So,
16:02you know,
16:02an explosive position,
16:03a skilled position.
16:05And,
16:05you know,
16:06it was just like
16:07zero push off
16:08on my right foot.
16:09And once they gave me
16:10that quarter zone shot,
16:12yeah,
16:12I didn't have that pain
16:13anymore and I could run.
16:14Was this in high school,
16:15Max Zach?
16:17No,
16:18this was Laney College
16:20against DVC.
16:21In college,
16:21okay.
16:22I'm like,
16:22man,
16:23they're firing shots
16:24on you for Laney?
16:26For high school.
16:28Laney for sure.
16:29Really?
16:30For sure?
16:30Junior college?
16:31This isn't Alabama.
16:32We're firing dudes up?
16:34Okay.
16:35I mean,
16:35I get quarter zone
16:36every three months.
16:37It's not like it's that
16:38out of the ordinary,
16:40you know?
16:40No.
16:41I mean,
16:41we're not talking about
16:42Toradol for a high school kid.
16:44That's a whole other level.
16:45I understand.
16:46Max Zach,
16:46thank you.
16:47Thank you, Max Zach.
16:47I do not believe
16:48Brock Purdy's going to play
16:49this weekend.
16:50You can think that
16:50it's gamesmanship.
16:51I get it.
16:52Was there some gamesmanship
16:53last week with Christian?
16:55You could say that,
16:56but here would be
16:57my response.
16:58Kyle,
16:59there wasn't gamesmanship
17:01last week
17:01in the form of like,
17:03I think Christian's
17:04probably not going to play.
17:05And then he did.
17:06Like,
17:07he tried to evade.
17:08He didn't say that.
17:09Questionable concern.
17:11Right.
17:11Questionable concern
17:12in all of these things.
17:13This is not evasive.
17:14This is telling you
17:15what's going on.
17:15Any further sense
17:16about whether
17:17Brock will be
17:18able to play on Sunday?
17:20I think it's a long shot.
17:21Is it possible
17:22that Purdy's injury
17:23could be a multi-week thing?
17:25That's a lot.
17:25I think that's the toe
17:26more so than the shoulder.
17:28Yeah,
17:28that's all definitive to me.
17:30Long shot.
17:31It's a long shot.
17:32Like,
17:32gamesmanship would be like,
17:34what's his status
17:36for this weekend?
17:38Questionable.
17:39Questionable concern.
17:40I'm not going to say
17:40anything about Christian guys.
17:41Are you concerned?
17:42Well,
17:43it's questionable
17:43if I'm concerned.
17:44Right.
17:44And this is,
17:46I think,
17:46a byproduct
17:47of him being forced
17:48to talk
17:49and the league
17:49forcing teams
17:50to make these designations.
17:52And so,
17:52on that day,
17:54when he said
17:54he had questionable concern,
17:55he's got to list him
17:56as questionable
17:57and when that happens,
17:58the reporters are going to ask
17:59and so now he has to answer.
18:01He comes out now,
18:02turf toe,
18:03and he says,
18:03it's a long shot
18:04and when he has to get designated,
18:07which I think is Friday,
18:08right?
18:09Well,
18:09Friday is when the official,
18:10yes,
18:11the report comes out.
18:12Friday afternoon.
18:12He won't practice today.
18:14He probably won't practice tomorrow
18:15and you get to Friday
18:16and if he doesn't practice,
18:18then he'll be listed as out.
18:20So,
18:20until then,
18:21he can be
18:22as murky
18:24or he can obfuscate
18:26as David Lombardi told us,
18:28which is,
18:29you know,
18:29being cloudy
18:29or being confusing.
18:31He can do that now
18:32because he doesn't have to designate.
18:33Right,
18:34right.
18:34But I think this is more out of,
18:37like,
18:38coaches are going to be
18:39very careful
18:40about being
18:41totally black
18:42and white
18:43with injuries
18:43in both directions
18:45because it's not,
18:46it's not fair to the player.
18:48You do not want to make it sound
18:50like there's a really good chance
18:51he could play
18:52if it's unlikely
18:54that the player could play
18:55because that puts the player
18:56in a bad position
18:57and makes the player look weak.
18:58Now,
18:59the opposite
18:59would be
19:01the player is in good standing
19:03to play,
19:04but I'm going to make you think
19:05he's not playing
19:06and the league
19:07super duper frowns
19:08on that.
19:09So you have to be
19:10as evasive
19:11as possible,
19:12but also
19:13try to be straight
19:15with people.
19:16And to me,
19:16that's what's happening here.
19:18Like,
19:18again,
19:19I could be wrong.
19:21We certainly were last week.
19:23I could misread that.
19:25And we did last week
19:26with Christian.
19:27But my read
19:28in this moment,
19:30Brock's out on Sunday.
19:32Like,
19:32100%
19:33Brock is out on Sunday.
19:35I wouldn't put it at 100%,
19:36but I'd put it at probably
19:3790%,
19:38whatever.
19:39He just is not,
19:40he's going to be
19:41appropriately evasive.
19:43He's not going to write it
19:44in ink
19:45because if he is,
19:47that weakens
19:47their flexibility
19:49with whatever
19:49because the human body
19:50does heal differently
19:51for different people.
19:52It does.
19:52And the fact that he says
19:54it's a long shot
19:55tells me that it's not
19:56as severe
19:57as it possibly could be.
19:59Just looking at
20:00the return to play
20:01timeline for a
20:03grade one,
20:04which would be the
20:04lesser of the possible
20:06injuries,
20:07three to five days
20:08is normal to return.
20:09So,
20:10if it's a long shot,
20:11then it might be more
20:13like five to seven,
20:14five to nine,
20:14whatever it is,
20:16and you go into it
20:17thinking,
20:17all right,
20:17if it's a long shot,
20:19we're just going to
20:20save him for the next week,
20:22get Mack ready
20:22for this game,
20:23and then we'll figure out
20:24the home opener
20:25when we get there.
20:25Or it could be grade two,
20:26which is why he's already
20:27admitting it's possibly
20:29a multi-week injury.
20:30Could be.
20:30Because a grade two
20:31moves much more into,
20:33you know,
20:34several weeks.
20:35Right.
20:35Several weeks.
20:36And it also,
20:37yeah,
20:37and they're not like
20:38cut and dry,
20:40black and white,
20:40grade one,
20:41grade two.
20:42It could be a grade
20:42one and a half
20:43or whatever.
20:44I did do AI on this.
20:46You want to know
20:46what AI says about it?
20:48Let's see.
20:49Turf.
20:50Turf.
20:51Yeah,
20:51I'm looking at it
20:51right now.
20:52So,
20:52well,
20:53yeah,
20:53so they separated it
20:55into,
20:56let's see,
20:58how many different grades?
20:59It was like three
21:00or four different grades.
21:02Turf toe prognosis.
21:06Turf toe prognosis
21:07from AI,
21:09grade one,
21:09two,
21:10or three,
21:11as you said,
21:11grade one,
21:12just a few days.
21:14Grade two is actually
21:15a partial tear.
21:16Could be a few weeks.
21:18Grade three,
21:19you know what that is.
21:20It's dislocation sensation.
21:22Oh,
21:22geez.
21:22And that means
21:24a cast for several weeks.
21:26Right.
21:26And sometimes surgery.
21:28Right.
21:29And dudes miss the year
21:30sometimes if it's halfway
21:31through the year
21:31and they get this.
21:32I was looking at that
21:33and it's like a 220-day
21:34average return
21:35if you have surgery.
21:37And basically what
21:38turf toe is
21:39is when you
21:40hyperextend your big toe
21:42so when you hit your foot
21:43and the toe kind of
21:44goes back and under
21:46your foot,
21:46it's painful.
21:48Yeah.
21:48And it's,
21:49you know,
21:49and the thing that makes
21:50me feel positive
21:52about it
21:52is he gets up
21:54no limp
21:54and finishes the game.
21:56Yeah, he played.
21:56Right.
21:56He played on it.
