CBS4 anchor and reporter, Mike Cugno, is live from Detroit following a more positive practice from the Dolphins
Transcript
00:00Oh, practice today was better for the Dolphins?
00:02Everybody was, you know, wailing and gnashing yesterday
00:05that that was going to be what the season looked like
00:08and seems like it may have looked better today.
00:11Yeah, so I wasn't there yesterday.
00:13I got in last night, but everyone I talked to today,
00:16whether it's players or just reporters around,
00:18everyone said that it looked much better.
00:20And then today, I mean, just watching the practice,
00:22it just looked like the normal practice.
00:24You know, the Lions have big play wide receivers.
00:26Those guys did what you'd expect to do,
00:29like Jameson Williams.
00:30He caught a deep ball on Miami today,
00:32but Miami without, you know, Tyree Kill
00:35still made some plays offensively,
00:38but there was a lot of energy.
00:40It just looked a little bit more competitive.
00:43I think you could still see the Lions,
00:45maybe the better team still,
00:47but they're also, I think, a little bit more healthy now.
00:50You know, Jalen Phillips isn't out there.
00:51Tyree Kill isn't out there.
00:53Zach Seeler wasn't doing much today.
00:55So if you're a Dolphins fan,
00:57I think today definitely probably calms your nerves
01:00a little bit about this team.
01:02Hey, you mentioned Cunho, Tyree Kill.
01:04And last year, he was obviously banged up.
01:06And look, to his credit,
01:07he tried to play through it last year,
01:09up until the last game where he flat out quit on the team.
01:12But is any part of you a little worried?
01:15And I get it, it's training camp.
01:17Like, he doesn't need to be out there right now.
01:19But is any part of you a little worried
01:20that the Dolphins are going to have to try
01:23to win games this season without Tyree Kill at all
01:26throughout the season?
01:28Like, any part of you concerned that at this point,
01:29his body just can't hold up for a 17-game season?
01:33I'm not worried yet.
01:35Mike McDaniel mentioned it in his press conference
01:36with us this morning,
01:38that they don't want to put him out there
01:40because they don't want to risk anything long-term.
01:42But if you still look at the amount of time
01:44between today and the start of the season,
01:47there's still, man, it's virtually a month still, right?
01:51Because you got the next two weeks,
01:53you have that bye week in between the preseason,
01:55the regular season,
01:55and then obviously another seven days
01:57before the season starts.
01:58So I'm not worried about it yet.
02:01And he keeps, and McDaniel keeps telling us
02:04that like, if you let Tyree go practice,
02:07he'd go practice, right?
02:08And so that, to me, that, you know,
02:12probably calms some of the worry there a little bit.
02:14I'm not worried about it yet.
02:17Doesn't mean it can't turn into something,
02:20but as of now, I'm not worried.
02:23I read something earlier in the show.
02:24Omar Kelly had tweeted out
02:26that it feels like Dolphins fans
02:28are rooting against this team
02:31more than he can recall.
02:33And I kind of have the same feeling.
02:35Omar's tweet, the beginning of it was,
02:37I've covered the Dolphins for 18 years,
02:39not even in the tank for two a season
02:41have I seen this fan base actively rooting
02:44against their team like this year.
02:45And I do get that kind of feel.
02:48You know, I almost felt like a lot of Dolphins fans
02:50were reveling in a terrible practice yesterday
02:54because they want to do the,
02:55see, I told you so,
02:56and they want to be rid of Greer and McDaniel.
02:59And I don't know, it seems weird to me.
03:02And I maintain, I say this, you know,
03:05I feel like a broken record,
03:06but I think people are sleeping
03:07on just how talented this team is.
03:10Let me say this.
03:11And I should have mentioned this off the top
03:13when you asked about today's practice.
03:14You go back to the Bears practice a week ago
03:17and they had,
03:18they had like five turnovers in that practice.
03:21And then the first team goes out there
03:22and marches down the field
03:24in the first series, 15 plays.
03:27You know, they don't punch it in,
03:29but they were making a concerted effort
03:30of trying to run the ball there.
03:31They weren't throwing, like it wasn't like you can,
03:34you can make, make for reasons
03:37why they didn't score on that possession.
03:39So some of that also,
03:42I think you take with a grain of salt,
03:43but what I think it is with Dolphin fans
03:45is that it feels like it just,
03:48it feels like purgatory, right?
03:50Cause you're like in that seven to 10 win range
03:53for such a long time.
03:54And even when you sneak into the playoffs,
03:56you lose in the first round.
03:57And so that's why I think Dolphin fans are,
03:59it's just more frustration last year.
04:02I thought last year was,
04:03last season was maybe the most constipated
04:07it ever felt just because of Tua
04:09in and out of the lineup
04:09and they still won eight games, right?
04:12So I think that's the frustration.
04:14It's like be one or be the other.
04:16And the middle ground is maybe the worst place to be.
04:20But do you think this year, Mike,
04:22they have the opportunity,
04:24in other words,
04:26what they're banking on
04:27is that everything is going to break their way
04:29this season, right?
04:30Like last year,
04:31obviously things did not break the Dolphins way.
04:34In 2023, as great as they were,
04:37they had a three game lead in the division
04:39with five weeks left to go
04:40and they weren't able to do it.
04:41Well, they would probably argue,
04:43and I think it's fair,
04:44injuries didn't break their way.
04:46And last year,
04:48kind of the same thing with Tua
04:49and with other position players as well.
04:51Are they basically banking on the fact
04:52that this year,
04:53things are going to break their way
04:55and, you know,
04:57potentially be a little bit luckier
04:59when it comes to injuries,
05:00even though it hasn't started off great?
05:02Well, you can't,
05:03yeah, you can't,
05:04you can't bank on the brakes
05:06going your way
05:07because that's rolling a big dice.
05:09But what I think you do look at
05:12is you hope you're doing enough
05:13to combat those injuries
05:17if and when they happen.
05:18And so I'll look at the front seven.
05:20And I, like today,
05:22one of the best plays I think I saw
05:24was Zeke Biggers
05:26and Jordan Phillips
05:27just completely maul
05:28the right side of the Lions line.
05:31And then Willie Gage Jr.
05:32comes in for a tackle
05:33on the right back.
05:34Like, so I look at that
05:36and I go,
05:37okay, there's,
05:38there's some young depth here.
05:40And, and you're like,
05:41okay, like God forbid
05:42there's a big injury.
05:44You hope there's depth
05:45behind some of these
05:46marquee positions.
05:47So I look at the front seven
05:48and I think, okay,
05:49they're, they're,
05:49they're pretty deep.
05:50The linebacker core
05:51is pretty deep.
05:52Obviously corners are a little thin.
05:53Wide receiver
05:54after your top two guys
05:55is probably a little thin.
05:56Although I think Malik Washington
05:57is making big strides
05:59and I love his game.
06:02I think he's going to be
06:03really good in this offense
06:04for the next few years.
06:05That, that to me
06:07is where it's at.
06:08If someone on the offensive line
06:09goes down,
06:10how big is the drop off?
06:11You can't count on the brakes
06:12going your way.
06:13You have to,
06:14you have to fight that
06:15and you fight that
06:17in the NFL with depth.
06:18And so that's where you think
06:19you got to look,
06:21I think at each position
06:22and group and just hope
06:23you have the depth
06:23to sustain that.
06:24Cause it's the NFL
06:25people are going to get hurt,
06:26but on the top,
06:27at the top end,
06:28at the top end talent level
06:30for this team,
06:31I think me and Hawk
06:32are the only ones
06:33who are saying,
06:34I think this team
06:35is better than what,
06:36than what a lot of people
06:37are saying.
06:38Yeah.
06:39It's a weird vibe to me
06:40that I'm getting
06:41because if you do look
06:42at the roster,
06:43there's talent on this roster.
06:45I don't know what goes on
06:46with,
06:46with Tua.
06:47I don't know why
06:48the narrative on Tua,
06:49I get it.
06:50Cause he's,
06:50he's got a propensity
06:51for injury,
06:52but two seasons ago,
06:54he didn't miss a single game,
06:55which is so rare
06:56for a starting quarterback
06:57in the NFL.
06:59Um,
06:59but we had asked
07:00several people
07:01this week
07:03and last,
07:04I can't remember
07:05who brought it up,
07:06but it was,
07:06would you take
07:07Mike Vrabel
07:08and Drake May
07:09or Mike McDaniel
07:11and Tua
07:11and Tua man,
07:13everyone says
07:14Vrabel
07:14and Drake May.
07:16And I'm like,
07:17I don't get that
07:18because Tua to me
07:19when he's zinging,
07:20man,
07:21he is as good
07:22and accurate
07:23as you see out there.
07:25You haven't seen
07:25anything from Drake May yet.
07:27And I understand
07:28Mike Vrabel
07:28is a better head coach.
07:29Although I will tell you this.
07:30I don't know
07:31if you saw Ben Volan
07:31tweet out.
07:32I retweeted it,
07:33Mike.
07:34Um,
07:34to me,
07:35this is the worst answer
07:36that any head coach
07:37has ever given
07:37in the history of sport.
07:39Mike Vrabel
07:40said today,
07:40the only birthday cake
07:43he would eat
07:44is carrot cake.
07:45Oh,
07:48Vrabel.
07:48I love that guy.
07:51What?
07:51A little carrot cake
07:53and a black coffee.
07:55We're,
07:56we're having
07:56time of our lives.
07:58I don't mind
07:59carrot cake.
08:00Cuno,
08:01I don't mind
08:01carrot cake.
08:02Not for a birthday.
08:05Oh,
08:05a birthday.
08:06Yeah.
08:07Like carrot cake.
08:08Cause,
08:08cause carrot cake
08:09is like,
08:10that's a classy dessert.
08:12I I'm sitting
08:13with the brain
08:14having a cup of coffee.
08:16I'm not doing
08:17a birthday party
08:18that ends
08:19in a carrot cake.
08:20There's no celebration
08:21that revolves around
08:23a cake with carrots
08:24in it.
08:25It's not your birthday.
08:27It's his birthday.
08:28Right?
08:29It shows me
08:29that he doesn't know
08:30what he's doing.
08:33Vrabel doesn't know
08:34what he's doing.
08:34He's got like 10,
08:3510 catches
08:36as a,
08:36as like a linebacker
08:37in the NFL
08:38and they're all touchdowns.
08:39I think he was lucky
08:42on everything
08:42because the guy's
08:43choosing carrot cake
08:44as a birthday cake.
08:45Again,
08:45carrot cake
08:46has its time
08:47and its place,
08:47but it ain't a birthday.
08:50Carrot cake
08:50is for all seasons.
08:51If you ask me,
08:53I disagree.
08:55Cookie cake
08:55is by the way,
08:56the correct answer
08:57for birthdays.
08:58Cookie cake
08:58is not a cookie.
08:59It's not a cake.
09:00It's a cookie.
09:00It's a giant cookie.
09:01You're just sharing
09:01a cookie with friends.
09:03It literally has
09:04taken the title.
09:05It literally says cake.
09:07Yeah.
09:07This is on you though,
09:10Hawk,
09:10for hoping Cunha
09:12would agree with you
09:13on carrot cake.
09:14Like if there was
09:15anybody who was going
09:16to agree with Mike Rabel
09:17on carrot cake,
09:18it was going to be Mike Cunha.
09:19I like carrot cake.
09:20I happen to love
09:21a cream cheese frosting,
09:22so I like carrot cake,
09:23but not for a birthday celebration.
09:25You don't put a candle
09:26in a carrot cake.
09:27A carrot cake
09:28So you don't do
09:29the cream cheese frosting
09:30unless you're feeling
09:31a little feisty, right?
09:32It's that cheat day
09:33type of thing.
09:33To be quite honest,
09:34the only good thing
09:35about carrot cake
09:36is the cream cheese frosting.
09:38Nobody loves
09:39that crappy cake
09:40with the carrot.
09:40No.
09:42Oh, God.
09:43I'm here to die
09:45in the hell
09:46that all baked goods
09:47like my zucchini muffins
09:48should have some sort
09:49of vegetable in them.
09:50Oh, for the love of God.
09:52I mean, honestly,
09:53just the worst.
09:54We're going to let you
09:55go on that note
09:55because I can't take it.
09:56Why not?
09:58A little squash
09:59chocolate chip cookie.
10:00Can we make that happen?
10:02See, if you're going
10:02to say that a cookie cake
10:04isn't an actual cake,
10:06it's just a cookie,
10:08I'm going to tell you
10:09that anything with squash
10:11is not a cookie, period.
10:14You can call it
10:14whatever you want.
10:15If it's got squash in it,
10:17it's not a cookie.
10:19I mean,
10:20we can agree to disagree,
10:22but a cookie cake
10:23is just a giant cookie.
10:24You just got lazy
10:25and didn't want to pull
10:26out the cookie cutter.
10:27Someone did that
10:28and thought,
10:29yeah, I'm inventing
10:30something incredible.
10:32No, no.
10:32Because a cookie,
10:33it's like, no,
10:34a cookie cake
10:35is like 18 inches around
10:37and it's got frosting on it
10:38and it spells out
10:40happy birthday.
10:41But if I put frosting on it,
10:43it's a birthday celebration.
10:44So if I buy a cookie,
10:46if I buy a giant cookie
10:47from Mrs. Field,
10:49you know,
10:49like one of those
10:49that fit in the palm of your hand,
10:50like a big cookie
10:51and I put frosting on it,
10:52it's a cake?
10:54No.
10:54Is a cupcake
10:55a birthday cake?
10:57Well, I don't know.
10:58I mean,
10:58it's a cookie.
11:00To Cugno's point,
11:01like a cookie cake
11:03is just a cookie.
11:05Like I know what cake is.
11:07I know what cake is.
11:08You look at a carrot cake,
11:09you can tell
11:10that's a slice of cake.
11:11But a cookie cake
11:13is just a giant cookie.
11:14It's just the same ingredients.
11:16Again,
11:16I'll give you the,
11:17I'll give you
11:18the cupcake example though.
11:20So the cupcake
11:21is a birthday cake?
11:22It's a cupcake.
11:24The cup,
11:24the cup is the,
11:25is the unit
11:26in which it's measured
11:27because it's cup size.
11:28You only calling
11:29a cookie cake
11:30a cake
11:30because you have
11:31to attack it
11:31with a knife
11:32because of how big it is.
11:33That's the only reason.
11:34Well,
11:35I mean,
11:35Solana's saying
11:36that it fits
11:36in the palm of your hand
11:38and it's a cake.
11:39I'm just saying
11:40if,
11:40because you made the point
11:41that if you put frosting
11:43on it,
11:44it's gotta be a cake.
11:45And I'm saying
11:46that's,
11:47that's just not true
11:48because you can buy anything
11:49and put frosting on it.
11:50It doesn't make it
11:51a cake.
11:52And by the way,
11:52anybody who eats
11:53a piece of cookie cake
11:54with a fork and knife,
11:55they're just,
11:56they're just pretending
11:57to be classy.
11:58Like eat it,
11:58it's how it's,
11:59it's meant to be eaten.
12:00But at Publix,
12:01you can buy a slice
12:02of cookie cake.
12:03Like you can get
12:04just a slice
12:05of cookie cake.
12:06You would never
12:06go somewhere,
12:07but you would never
12:08go somewhere
12:09and buy a slice
12:10of cookie.
12:11That's ridiculous.
12:12You would only buy
12:13a slice of cookie cake.
12:14Is ice cream cake
12:16a cake
12:16or is it ice cream?
12:17It's terrible,
12:18whatever it is.
12:20It's just ice cream
12:21formed into a brick.
12:22That's all it is.
12:23No,
12:23that's ridiculous.
12:23I'm with you on that.
12:24It melts and then
12:26it melts and it's gone.
12:28That's it.
12:28Oh,
12:28let's put some crunchies
12:29in it.
12:30Now all the kids
12:31will love it.
12:32Oh,
12:32okay.
12:33Now you're 45 years old.
12:34I just pull up ice cream cake.
12:36Okay.
12:36Well,
12:36you're an idiot.
12:37I mean,
12:38I'm speaking,
12:38you know,
12:39metaphorically,
12:39not to you.
12:40Exactly.
12:41Mike Cugno,
12:41watch him Saturday
12:42on CBS4,
12:44prowling the sidelines.
12:46Goldie and Kim Bocamper
12:48on the call
12:49and Cugno
12:50on the sidelines.
12:51Excellent broadcast.
12:52You did a great job
12:53preseason game one.
12:54Looking forward to game two.
12:57All right.
12:57Love you guys.
12:58Love you too.
12:59There you go.
12:59Mike Cugno.
