A Magnetic Drill Press is a powerful drilling tool designed to bore precise holes in steel and other metals. Equipped with a strong magnetic base, it locks securely onto the work surface for stable, accurate drilling—perfect for construction, fabrication, and industrial jobs.
In this video, we’ll show you how to set up and operate a magnetic drill press, select the right bits for different materials, and use the magnetic base safely for clean, accurate results.
💡 Pro Tip
Always ensure the magnetic base is fully engaged before drilling. Use cutting fluid to extend bit life and achieve smoother cuts. Start with lower RPMs for larger bits and gradually increase speed for smaller holes.
⚠️ Safety Reminder
Wear safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection. Keep cords and clothing clear of the rotating bit. Never activate the drill without the magnet engaged. Disconnect power before changing bits or performing maintenance.

00:00well welcome back and today we're going to have a look at a magnetic drill mag drill a lot of
00:20people just call them but this drill is just like having a drill press if you're familiar with some
00:26machining to put a drill in to drill through steel plate or anywhere maybe where it's portable
00:30where you can't bring the the the job to the drill here we take the drill to the job and if there's
00:39an area where you're trying to maybe in a beam or something out in the field or out in a residential
00:44area where you don't have the resources to have a big drill then this might fit the bill for you
00:50this base is magnetic when it's plugged in it's plugged in by regular 115 volt power
00:56there's several sizes of drills this particular one takes a three morse taper the morse taper refers to
01:02the the end on it that the drill has now if you were doing straight shank drills jobber drills or
01:10maybe the drills that you might have in your toolbox at home you would use this this chuck
01:14and this particular end here would go into the drill and be screwed on there and thereby making
01:22you allowing you to use a straight shank drills to drill any holes in an area you can also put in a
01:30collar which will take what I was just saying three morse taper drills that's a tapered drill on the end
01:36tapered shank on the end of the drill and that would fit in here usually used in bigger sizes
01:42maybe three quarter inch and up one inch inch and a quarter that you might want to use
01:48this collar also you can put adapters in that take what's called hog bits these are
01:55straight bits that are like for milling into into steel and hogging out holes so
02:04once you have the appropriate drill that you're going to use you can even swivel this base you would
02:10bring it over to the plate make sure it's nice and flat and smooth or the beam and turn the magnet on
02:17by plugging it in and the door the the controls are on the back it's basically just turning it on
02:24and turning it on in the forward speed and you act like a drill press you just loosen it off and you
02:31drill it down and then drill back up and you can adjust this plate up or down to get closer or higher
02:37depending on the job that you're doing the one thing that is not recommended which people sometimes
02:43want to do is hang this thing off a beam and drill up into it or off of a side this is heavy i know you
02:51can put strap it there or you can put a safety rope or anything but if this falls it can cause some
02:58serious damage not only to the drill but any people that are around so i wouldn't recommend using this in
03:04that case trying to drill up just use it in this mode right here drilling down that can put a fair
03:12bit of pressure on when you're drilling and up and down you can add water if you need be as these hog bits
03:19usually have a little hose on them to lubricate and it might be an area that you need to fix some
03:26machinery or do something that's in a remote area it provides you an opportunity to drill some holes
03:33okay so give that some consideration hopefully that would make your job a little easier than
03:38trying to use hand drills or anything and hopefully we'll see you soon again and don't forget to subscribe
