A Wallpaper Steamer is a specialized tool that uses heated steam to loosen adhesive, making wallpaper removal faster and less messy. Perfect for home renovation projects, it works on most wallpaper types and helps prepare walls for painting or new coverings.
In this video, we’ll show you how to set up and operate a wallpaper steamer, how to safely apply steam to walls, and techniques for removing wallpaper efficiently without damaging the surface underneath.
💡 Pro Tip
Score the wallpaper lightly before steaming to help the steam penetrate the adhesive. Work in sections, holding the steamer plate in place for several seconds before peeling. Keep a scraper handy for stubborn spots.
⚠️ Safety Reminder
Wear gloves and eye protection to avoid burns from hot steam. Be cautious of dripping water near electrical outlets. Allow the steamer to cool fully before refilling or storing. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe operation.

00:00Welcome back again and here is an item that maybe is not used as much around the houses of the newer
00:18homes but that certainly is in the from the old homes and this is a commercial wallpaper steamer
00:24this is the forgetting that tough wallpaper off where grandmother put it on the doors on the
00:29ceiling on the walls maybe put two or three layers on because they didn't want to take it off started
00:36wallpapering different wooden benches everything wallpaper has been around for years vinyl of
00:44course came in and then it became even harder to get off and if it's pre-pasted not quite as bad
00:50but once the wallpaper has with the mixed up paste and that's put on the wall and then your wallpaper
00:56put on certainly commercially in these larger three foot wide sheets it becomes a bit of a
01:01challenge to get it off without taking and destroying some of the wallpaper or the paper
01:06that's on there from the drywall as opposed to plaster plaster days it wasn't so bad you could
01:12scrape away pretty good but once the drywall is there and you start gouging it you're starting
01:16to do some patching so the way to use these is fill them up with water maybe about three quarters of the
01:24way up some people fill them up too far too high and the reason for that is you need some area for
01:30the steam on top that's going to come through the the hose so fill them up of only about three quarter
01:36you push this button in on this weight on top this is where you're going to put your water in
01:41and you've obviously got a vial in the gauge where how far you can fill it put this back in
01:47just like a kettle not much different it's just going to start you plug it in and usually not an
01:56extension cord but I plug it right into the wall socket I'd put a board or source or something
02:01underneath because this does get warm underneath so just in case you're putting on top of your
02:07hardwood floor you don't want to see a little spot on the bottom where maybe it's faded a bit from the
02:12heat of the wallpaper steamer so put something underneath it even a couple of oven nets or a
02:17piece of wood or or aspenite just something to keep it off the floor and then hook up your hoses
02:25this is the normal paddle size that's used for the larger areas sometimes over doors or smaller areas
02:31you've got a narrower paddle as well that you can get so they just go in by quick connects and snap them in
02:36snap the other one in on top of the machine the same way throw this paddle into a bucket when you
02:45plug it in and just wait for the steam to start coming now just like a kettle it's not going to
02:50come out in a matter of seconds or a couple of minutes depending on how cold the water was that
02:55you put into this and how much you put in will determine how long it takes to start steaming so it
03:00could take 20 minutes half an hour for you to start seeing steam come out of the paddle and usually when
03:05you plug this in you'll see the red light comes on so you don't have power these do draw full 15 amps
03:10it's a heating element so if you all of a sudden don't have steam first place you look is the light
03:17could have tripped a breaker or a fuse there could be other things on than that circuit so don't be
03:23surprised if you if it trips out and you don't see the light so in that case you're gonna have to reset
03:28and get it going again but wait for the steam to keep coming out of the bucket not a bad idea to have a
03:34bucket around anyways just to shake off the excess water sometimes you're doing this in the winter
03:38time and the walls are cold so you're going to get a fair bit of condensation and run and water
03:43running down the wall another good idea is if it's vinyl or hard paper to get off there are these
03:50rollers that have little dimples on them that cut through the outer side of the wallpaper or you can
03:55just simply take a an exacto knife or your trim knife and just slit some slits in through the vinyl of the
04:02paper and thereby the when you put the paddle right up against the flush right onto the wall
04:08then it's got a chance to get in behind and soften it up start at the top and the paper and your water
04:14will be running down and just keep moving down the wall once you can use your scraper your putty knife
04:19to start scraping it off it'll start moving along fairly quickly now even even in some real small areas
04:27or areas that you think you could use steam or maybe there's some paint areas hot steam can be
04:33used by taking the the hose off of the paddle and even just put a oven mitt or some rags around this
04:41hot hose but remember it is hot the whole hose is going to be hot because you got steam going through
04:45it and you can direct it into some smaller areas as well and i've seen it i've seen it used for
04:53a number of different purposes only because even though it's a wallpaper steamer you are generating
04:59steam and it does shoot out of here and if you need that you can use it for other purposes as well
05:05so it may have may come in handy for something that we're you're not even aware of where you wish you
05:10had some some generation of steam and this could provide that for you so there's something else that
05:17you could consider and maybe that'll make your projects a little easier see you again soon and
05:23don't forget to subscribe
