A Skid Steer is a compact, powerful, and highly maneuverable machine designed for digging, lifting, grading, and material handling on job sites. With interchangeable attachments such as buckets, forks, and augers, it’s one of the most versatile pieces of equipment for construction, landscaping, and agricultural work.
In this video, we’ll show you how to operate a skid steer safely, perform pre-operation checks, and use attachments effectively for maximum productivity and control.
💡 Pro Tip
Plan your movements ahead and use smooth, gradual controls to prevent tipping. Keep the bucket low when transporting heavy loads for better stability. Always switch off the engine and relieve hydraulic pressure before changing attachments.
⚠️ Safety Reminder
Wear a hard hat, safety boots, and a seatbelt at all times. Operate only on level ground when possible, and never carry passengers. Be aware of your surroundings—especially when working near edges or other workers.

00:00Welcome back again and to some of the little larger pieces of rental equipment that you'll
00:16see around the rental yard and the job site and certainly even around your home that you want to
00:22try on. Don't be afraid of some of these machines if you're a newcomer it just takes a little bit
00:28of practice and a little bit of care and anybody can operate them so we've shown many people for
00:33the first-time jobs that they do and they want to tackle them themselves do them the way they want
00:38to do them and this would be one fairly standard piece of equipment a skid steer as this is referred
00:45to and so if you're asking for it or you're looking on the website the skid excavators and skid steers
00:52category is where you would find this this is a track machine and the initial purposes of having
00:59track machines was on mud soft soils areas where the you don't want to damage the surface too much
01:07they're not the machine that wasn't originally developed to be used on asphalt and concrete it's
01:16a hard ride when it's you're using a track machine on those surfaces but also it's very very hard on
01:22the tracks where's the mode asphalt is one of the most abrasive materials and tracks aren't aren't that
01:30good on using them on asphalt but some people want them for the stability and the the weight of the
01:35machine because your track assembly is heavier than with tires so just pick the machine that suits the
01:43surface and suits your your safety and your your job site certainly in the early springs the track
01:51machine and mud are real soft surfaces are is better than using a tired machine the tired machine can get
01:57stuck a little easier but in the wintertime machine with tires is probably something that's preferred
02:06it's quicker it's easier to turn and that may be an easier machine to use and if it's
02:13dry soils and dry areas a tired machine is just fine as far as Costco a track machine is always
02:21going to cost you more to use than a tired machine but then again you won't have to worry about flats
02:26when you get into a crap track machine either now this machine here is about a 72 inch wide bucket this
02:32would be terrific for doing any kind of landscaping loading stone soil going into a big pile picking it up and
02:42loading it or taking it somewhere backfilling around the house after you've done a waterproofing job and
02:48you want to backfill as opposed to maybe using the excavator that you would have to dig it the you might
02:54find the skid steer a lot quicker as far as labor goes and that's something consideration to have if you
03:01are paying people to do certain jobs and even if you're getting the machine make sure you consider the
03:07fact to the cost of labor is the quickest way to do the job and that may be of concern now this
03:15particular machine has a cab on it sometimes all year round machines have cabs on them sometimes just
03:22in the winter obviously to keep the heat in the machines now come air-conditioned heated radios
03:29heated seats there's a lot of different options not that they're necessary but this is what comes in a
03:36lot of the machines now so in the summer sometimes you might we don't some machines won't have doors
03:42on them just for the sake that's a little more comfortable even with an open air cab and and
03:47especially if you're doing a job site where you've got a lot of workers around and you need to yell
03:51instructions or any of that kind of thing consider that whether you want a machine with a cab on it
03:57one thing to remember and the biggest thing to remember if you have a cab door on your machine is
04:01don't have the door open and lift up the arm and rip the door off it's done many times in the season
04:09by different people or contractors so don't leave your door open don't think you can when you have
04:15your your bucket up or anything the door is not going to open all the way because this arm is going to
04:20be up and stop it so also uh be aware and get instruction on how to open the door it's just a
04:27simple lever uh some people see these red hinge levers on the side um these are for panic uh in
04:36case if something happens you can pull those levers down and you can get the the door the door glass out
04:41but they're if you take them out and you lose the pieces you're not going to get the glass or the door
04:45back on so bear in mind and take a few minutes to understand how to open your door and how to close
04:51the door now good idea to keep a window a little bit open as well because some of the tabs uh when
04:58you're closing them will almost be airtight and it's very hard to close your doors unless you leave
05:02the window opening a little bit of air in now controls are as this one has an air ride seat
05:14bear bear in mind that these controls your arms safety arms have to be down before you can use
05:20anything or do anything joystick controls one operates the bucket up and down and dumping of the
05:27bucket and the other one will operate your uh your drive your tracks the nice thing advantage of uh
05:33of the joystick controls now is that you just point your joystick what direction you want to go
05:40and the machine will do the forward and back with either the tires or the tracks and make it uh an
05:45easier ride and make things uh smoother when you're turning and everything so you don't have to worry about
05:51thinking about that yourself to pull one back one forward you're just pushing one forward and it's going
05:56to do the it's going to do those things for you everything's automatic um you can uh have you'll
06:02have a uh again a safety control security code to put into the machine and you get that from your
06:09rental operator they're changed frequently so that you'll have access to the machine you'll have to put
06:16that code in before you can access doing anything any of the controls or anything with the machine
06:20and uh run at full throttle uh when you're operating remember that the uh the engine isn't running a
06:27transmission or anything they're running hydraulic pumps so unless the pumps are running at full speed
06:32even if you're going slow you don't have power so you got to run the machines when you start digging
06:37and using it at full throttle so that you have enough power to do the job you want to do
06:43uh obviously there's uh windshield wipers in the rain there's fans for uh cooling inside and uh
06:51the um other thing like we said is make sure your door is is solid and closed when you slam it closed
06:58um other than that uh you do have the foot pedal is usually just uh on the floor like a car
07:05and uh you can have that as well and use it it's dual there's a knob up on top that you can set the
07:10throttle full speed all the time or you can use a a throttle on the floor a gas pedal so to speak on
07:18the floor to increase or decrease your speed uh just like you would in the vehicle so that's kind of
07:25it for this machine uh bear in mind that there's smaller narrower buckets to try and get into smaller
07:30areas if you have to take a fence panel or out or something uh measure it and make sure you know what
07:35size width machine you're getting and also as with all machines uh check your height make sure if
07:42you're going underneath an overhang or you're going near reef troughs or you're going some other structure
07:46that you're not going to hit the top uh don't think that you're going to drive these through carports
07:51and uh and grow open-ended garages that you can drive through without checking your height and uh you
07:57may be surprised you may be fine but you've got to do some uh research before you start uh bringing
08:02machines in to uh get into a certain area if you haven't checked also weight is heavier with these
08:08bigger machines if that's a concern especially if you're dropping driving over septic tank areas or
08:14or any kind of areas that have got a buried line or a weeping tile something like that that you don't
08:20want to crush and so your these machines are the skid steers are a little lower in height than your
08:26excavators but in any case check your dimensions check your weight check your access areas and
08:35then pick the right machine for the job and you'll be much happier in doing it so hopefully this helps
08:41you along and gives you some guidance and hopefully you'll subscribe
