Legendary Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn is forced to face the music following the Hurricanes victory over his Fighting Irish on Sunday.
Transcript
00:00Brady Quinn's on the Toyota of Hollywood hotline, a Notre Dame great.
00:05I'm sure he's been despondent over the fighting Irish losing to the Canes on Sunday night.
00:12Brady Quinn, in addition to his national morning radio show on Fox Sports Radio,
00:17can be seen every Saturday on Fox's big noon kickoff,
00:21which I have to say, I had texted Brady after Saturday.
00:25I found myself watching that more than game day.
00:28And there's an energy that's with this big noon kickoff.
00:34I think they're doing a very good job.
00:36And I don't know why I watch it.
00:39I don't much care for the Big Ten.
00:41I don't think I care for anybody on the panel there.
00:45But there's a really good energy on that show.
00:49It's a lot of excitement and energy.
00:51I enjoy the show.
00:52Here's what we want to do.
00:54We want to make it feel like you guys wish you were there.
00:56And that's how it feels.
00:58Like, we're trying to put together a big party in celebrating college football wherever we go.
01:04So I appreciate it.
01:05I'll take that as a compliment, I guess.
01:08But yes, Hawk, I showed up despite the fact that my Irish got beat on the road to start the season to your Hurricanes.
01:15I'm just so thankful we're not at a Duffy's somewhere in South Florida having to deal with whatever the hell that bet was a few years back.
01:22Yeah, that was a rough one for all of us involved.
01:25We're all trying to forget it.
01:27I kept looking to Crowder to, like, help me out.
01:29And he was like, no, bro.
01:30Like, I don't.
01:31I know this is weird.
01:32Crowder was having the time of his life.
01:34He loves when everyone around him is in a...
01:36He felt like it was equally as awkward for him.
01:39It was equally as awkward.
01:41When Hawk had on a skirt, I find myself looking at skirts a lot.
01:45And then it was Hawk.
01:46And it just...
01:47I was uncomfortable, Brady.
01:48I'm not going to lie.
01:49We all are.
01:50Trust me.
01:51We all are.
01:51I thought we all had a moment.
01:53This is interesting.
01:54This is the first I'm hearing this.
01:56Sunday night at Hard Rock.
01:59So, it got a little dicier at the end.
02:02You and I had texted after the game.
02:04But for the Hurricanes, a heck of a win to start the season, right?
02:09I mean, Notre Dame comes in with a lot of juice.
02:11And Miami, while the bend didn't break, it was a very big bend at the end, but they didn't break.
02:22No.
02:22And look, I would arguably say this might be the biggest win for Mario Cristobal since he's been head coach at Miami.
02:29And for this reason, because I think this lends itself to what...
02:33All right, what's the rest of the season going to be like now?
02:35Because that's one of those losses that...
02:37And this is just me being honest.
02:39I'm being objective.
02:40This is not emotional.
02:42I feel like Miami Hurricanes fans, if they get off to a good start, they're in it.
02:47And, like, that momentum builds, right?
02:49It's like a big wave hitting South Beach.
02:51But the problem is if they lose early, then it's like, all right, now the attendance isn't quite as good at Hard Rock.
02:57And it's already tough to get people there in any way.
03:00And so I think for that reason, with all the resources that have been put in this team, the defensive improvements...
03:05I mean, hell, you guys had, like, five guys who brought in as transfer portal players.
03:09Corey Heatherman, your D.C., who I got to watch a lot, covering a lot of Big Ten football, did a tremendous job in Minnesota, simplified things, was really able to allow those players to play fast and not have any, like, busted coverage, things like you saw last year.
03:22And then bringing in Carson Beck, who, you know, looks like he's going to be a first-round talent.
03:27I mean, I remember watching him two years ago thinking, after the 2024 season, he was going to be the first quarterback taken, and it just didn't work out for him last year in Georgia.
03:35So, you know, seeing his connection, and even with a freshman, a true freshman like Malachi Toney, who I remember, like, leading up to the game, reading reports about him, as advertised.
03:46And, like, I played as a true freshman.
03:47Crowder, I don't know when you started playing at Florida, but, like, it's hard, man.
03:51Like, back in that day, like, I didn't...
03:53We couldn't enroll early.
03:54So, like, you got there to camp, and you're trying to catch up, and you get thrusted in as a true freshman.
03:59You got classes and all this other stuff going on.
04:01And nowadays, with, like, NIL, that complicates things more than anything else, it always blows me away when you see freshmen who step on the stage right away and play as well as Malachi Toney did in that moment, first game out the gate.
04:14So, look out for that young man.
04:16He's going to be a star.
04:17Yeah, Brady, defensive freshman of the year, but we won't go back in the stats and, you know, numbers, you know.
04:23Damn!
04:23Really?
04:25I didn't know that.
04:26Speaking of freshmen, Carr, CJ.
04:29Yeah, man.
04:30That was a...
04:32I'm not making excuses.
04:33I got lit up because I wore a Notre Dame shirt because, you know, me and Marcus Freeman are good friends.
04:39So, you know, I got a little swag bag when I went up to South Bend.
04:43But is he...
04:44He didn't look great.
04:46But you just said it.
04:47You played as a freshman.
04:48Do you believe in Carr moving forward from the Notre Dame side?
04:51Are you worried about...
04:53Didn't look great.
04:54I mean, he made sure a freshman his first start in that environment.
04:56Like, dude, I thought he did awesome.
04:58Because here's the thing.
04:59It's like, you know, if you want to be critical of a number of things, you can be critical of the O-line.
05:04You know, I thought obviously the edges, you know, Bain and Mesidor at times just dominated, right?
05:09And so he was under duress.
05:11He had different guys mixing in, too.
05:12I mean, Knapp, who started the game at left tackle, he missed the final two series.
05:18Like, he was cramped it.
05:19And so you've got a backup who's really a third-string left tackle.
05:22Charles Jagasaw eventually will take over at that left tackle spot once he's back healthy.
05:27He's injured right now.
05:29But you've got a redshirt freshman, his first start ever, dealing with that sort of pressure.
05:34And yet, still, delivering strikes.
05:36I mean, throwing a no-look touchdown pass on his very first touchdown he's creating.
05:41I thought he was awesome.
05:42And, you know, again, they didn't probably get Jeremiah Love enough touches, you know,
05:48no-brainer touches, things that, like, the Miami's defense couldn't take away.
05:52And they talked about that a little bit post-game.
05:54But it's, like, one of the reasons why I feel, like, optimistic after a loss in comparison to other early season losses under Marcus Freeman
06:02is because, like, A, this is a really good Miami team.
06:05Like, I think it might be the best offensive line Notre Dame faces.
06:08Their defensive front faces all year.
06:11And then their defensive front.
06:13Like, those might be the two best edge rushes they face in their schedule, at least in the regular season.
06:17So, you know, to think about the way they came back, to think about the way Carr played with toughness,
06:23his playmaking ability.
06:25You know, people are going to make a big deal about the screen that went for interception.
06:28All right, bad timing.
06:29Shouldn't have thrown in the first place.
06:31Probably should have handed the ball off on the RPO.
06:34But, you know, that's where you learn.
06:36I mean, you go through some of those mistakes when you've got, you know, guys never started before.
06:40But I came away truly impressed and optimistic about this team this year because of him.
06:47Like, you guys lose Carson Beck after this year.
06:50We get this guy at least for four more years if he wants of eligibility.
06:53I don't know that he'll be there longer than the next two because I think he's that good.
06:57But that's where my optimism comes from for this season.
07:00A lot of coping going on here by Brady Quinn.
07:02Oh, man, you'll see.
07:05You'll see as this thing builds, the dude's going to be up for a Heisman.
07:08You know, you guys got to fill in your whole roster again every year.
07:13You guys just got to keep filling through the transfer portal.
07:15We got guys who grow up into this.
07:17Let me guess, Brady, next year in South Bend, watch out for CJ Carr, Hurricanes, right?
07:21That's where this is leading to because I saw a lot of that on Twitter.
07:24But no joke, speaking to what you're saying about the offensive and defensive line,
07:28I think that's what we were most impressed with, watching Mario's recruiting finally look like the team
07:35that we all expected him to build.
07:37What are fair, reasonable expectations for the Miami Hurricanes?
07:41Because we're hearing a lot of they have to make the college football playoff,
07:45but they've got UF, they've got FSU on the road,
07:48and they've never, since they've been in the ACC,
07:50been able to get through that ACC schedule without squandering one game.
07:54So, like, what are reasonable expectations?
07:55Is it just make the playoff and win a game, or are you thinking?
07:59First off, Miami's got the easiest schedule that I have ever seen in regards to
08:05they don't leave the state of Florida until November.
08:07Like, it's absurd.
08:10You do not leave the climate and conditions of the state of Florida until November.
08:14I don't know how the hell you get that done in your scheduling,
08:18but it's unbelievable.
08:19And mind you, mind you, you leave the state once,
08:22you leave it for your November 1st game,
08:24and then you don't leave the state again until November 22nd.
08:27So, really, one time.
08:28We didn't tell you to build that stupid college in South Bend, Indiana.
08:31One time.
08:32One time.
08:33Up until basically Thanksgiving, you have to leave the state of Florida.
08:37So, I'm just saying there's a big advantage there, I think, for the team.
08:40Now, you bring up the point of a tough run of Florida teams you've got to go through.
08:46Like, I wouldn't overlook USF.
08:48Alex Golish, who, mind you, went to one of our high schools in my district,
08:52I guess for the same year.
08:53I had no idea.
08:55But I followed his coaching career.
08:57He's done an unbelievable job at USF.
08:59Like, really building up that program.
09:01He'll have some trick plays or a fake punt or something that he's going to catch Miami on.
09:05But, like, that's a team to look out for.
09:08Florida, you know, they didn't wow me with what they put on tape.
09:11I actually thought their offensive line struggled a little bit versus Long Island.
09:15You know, the scoreboard looked kind of bigger than what that looked like.
09:18But, look, it's still going to be a tough game.
09:21And then now Florida State.
09:22Like, that game October 4th, Tommy Castellanos can deal.
09:27They didn't really even have to use his arm versus Bama, which is saying something.
09:31They were better in the trenches they thought they were going to be.
09:33And Gus Malzahn is just a handful for any defense to deal with.
09:36I mean, Corey Heatherman is going to have his work cut out,
09:39trying to prepare that defense for all the different quarterback run game counter power zone scheme
09:46and things off of that that they do.
09:48It's just super tough to prepare for.
09:50So, look, I mean, Florida obviously is not an ACC team.
09:54I think they can drop one game in conference play and still get in.
09:58They don't have to play Clemson.
10:00That's to their advantage.
10:02But I think, yeah, you should be wanting to be in the playoff.
10:05Like, the way the schedule sets up, the way you looked versus Notre Dame,
10:09you've got Carson Beck.
10:10Like, I would ask this, if not now, then when?
10:13Like, when are Miami Hurricanes fans sitting there saying, oh, no, yeah, a year from now,
10:18we're really hoping to make the playoff.
10:20Like, this is it, dude.
10:21Like, this team has been put together and assembled to go make a run this year.
10:27They talk trash.
10:28We beat the hell out of Long Island University.
10:31We just play who's on our schedule, Brady.
10:33Brady, best quarterback in the state of Florida.
10:37Has to be D.J.
10:39Has to be D.J.
10:40He's D.J.
10:42Lagway.
10:43Or Carson Beck?
10:44I would say, I think Beck's, I would not be shocked when it's all said and done
10:48if it's not Beck.
10:49But, like I said, I thought D.J.
10:51Lagway, what he did last year, kind of put himself on the map in regards to being
10:54looked at as that.
10:56You know, this past game, again, I know the box score is what it is.
10:59Yeah.
10:59You tell me you feel comfortable about your right tackle right now, all right,
11:03based on what I saw versus Long Island's front.
11:06No, we didn't.
11:07We got told when they were going to score 80, they scored 55.
11:10Like, I'm not, like, those games, Brady, you know how it is.
11:14I tell the story all the time.
11:16We played Bethune-Cookman when I was in school.
11:17We beat them 73-3.
11:19That wasn't a football game.
11:20That was a grown man playing against children.
11:24But I do believe in D.J.
11:26Lagway.
11:27I think D.J.
11:27Lagway can spin that thing.
11:30He can spin that thing.
11:31And I think he's definitely right there.
11:34I just don't think he's played enough to kind of earn that equity.
11:36Like, he needs to have the season, like, back at in 2023 this year for me to be like, okay.
11:41Like, he's arrived now.
11:43And Florida's got such a tough schedule, too.
11:45Like, that's the other piece of this that I think makes it difficult.
11:48But I'm telling you, man, don't sleep on Tommy Castellanos.
11:51That young man can absolutely burst.
11:54And he's dynamic running the football.
11:56He's got a good enough arm.
11:58And you probably didn't watch a lot of BC last year, Crowder.
12:00But my guess is, like, you didn't realize he was the only guy that would keep those games competitive up there.
12:07And so, once he went to Florida State, I was like, all right.
12:10Like, they're going to be pretty improved, even if they're offensive lines now.
12:13Because he can scoot.
12:13So, DJ Lagway is the third best quarterback in the state of Florida.
12:18It's possible.
12:19He's got to earn it.
12:20He's talking.
12:21He's got to earn it, dude.
12:22Like, tell me this much.
12:24Like, at this moment, we're one game in for all these teams.
12:29Who's had the best performance so far?
12:31Like, who's earned it versus a good opponent?
12:33Like, you got Castellanos with arguably the biggest upset of the weekend.
12:37You got Carson Beck dealing versus Notre Dame, a team that was playing in the national championship.
12:41And then Florida played Long Island.
12:43You want me to give credit for you guys playing Strong Island University?
12:47Strong Island?
12:48You want me to give credit for that?
12:51The quarterback also plays receiver, we found out, which was embarrassing.
12:56He's a vendor at halftime.
12:58No.
12:58Like, what was their mascot?
13:00A shark?
13:00Is that a Long Island?
13:01Yeah, it was a shark.
13:03How does that make any sense?
13:05They should be like a financial advisor or something.
13:08Like a bond salesman.
13:10I was thinking like a devil.
13:11Maybe like a mafia member or something.
13:14Long Island Mafia.
13:16Long Island CPAs.
13:19Real quick, because we're going to run out of time here with Brady Quinn.
13:22Arch Manning, any alarm bells there for you?
13:25Bill Belichick, any alarm bells there at UNC?
13:28For UNC?
13:30Yeah, that's a lot of alarm bells there.
13:32That was not good.
13:33I mean, Sonny Dykes and his program, clearly, they sent a message.
13:37And, you know, it's funny, real quick.
13:39We were there for Coach Prime's first game.
13:41They played in Fort Worth.
13:42And I remember talking to Sonny Dykes.
13:44He was like, you know, we didn't realize, like, how big of a deal it was going to be with someone like that, like Coach Prime, the attention.
13:51He had been entirely different this time.
13:53Because that was all the talk was about.
13:54It was about Bill Belichick, Bill Belichick.
13:57And he really fed into the team, like, we're the team that they should be talking about.
14:01Like, go out there and prove it.
14:02Because Bill ain't playing.
14:03You know, it's you guys on the field.
14:05So, yeah, UNC's got a lot of work to do.
14:09But, you know, look, Arch, yes, there's concern.
14:13He missed some easy throws.
14:15I will say this.
14:16There was nowhere to throw at the football.
14:18I went back and watched the tape.
14:19I thought what Ohio State did really well rushing him was they didn't let him out of the pocket.
14:23They, like, really tried to collapse it around him.
14:25He couldn't see.
14:27And you could tell even on the field he looked antsy.
14:29Like, he wanted to get out, but they wouldn't let him.
14:31And he wasn't sure what to do with the football.
14:33And everyone had a defender sitting right next to him.
14:35So, you know, he made a couple good throws.
14:37The touchdown throw, the throw to the tight end at the sideline.
14:40You know, he started getting a rhythm there at the end.
14:42It was too late.
14:44But I think he'll be fine.
14:46I did talk to someone in the program.
14:48He kind of mentioned that maybe he was playing a little bit banged up, too.
14:52Look, he strapped up and played.
14:53So, I don't know how much you want to read into it.
14:56But something definitely looked off.
14:57That first boot when he burned it into the ground.
14:59I was like, yeah, that wasn't what we saw last year on tape.
15:02I know it was Louisiana Monroe and Mississippi State.
15:05But he still looked very much the part.
15:07And so, I'm not giving up on him by any means.
15:09That's his first road start.
15:11I think he'll respond from this.
15:13And, Brady, quickly on the way out, because Solana stumped me, which is crazy from someone of his mental status.
15:19Because the X's and O's, Jimmy's and Joe's thing, he asked me, is it bigger than that?
15:25Because I'm saying, I'm like Bill Belichick.
15:27He has no power.
15:29He has no players.
15:30He's the UNC.
15:31He asked me, does it change from college to the NFL with the coaching ability to the player ability?
15:40Does anything swing or you just need good players to win games?
15:44Well, you need good players no matter where you're at.
15:46But I'll say this.
15:47Talent is equated at the NFL level, right?
15:49Like, the talent is much more equal amongst all 32 teams.
15:53So, scheme becomes that much more important.
15:55How you isolate those special players or those extraordinary players.
15:59The problem at the college level is talent is not equated.
16:02Like, you've got these collectives who are spending more than others.
16:05And so, you've got some rosters where, like, for example, for Ohio State,
16:09Cardinal Tate would be a number one receiver pretty much anywhere in the country.
16:12He just happens to be behind Jeremiah Smith, right?
16:15Brennan Enos, who's, you know, again, South Florida product, he might be a number one receiver.
16:19He's behind Cardinal Tate and Jeremiah Smith.
16:21So, you get teams that are, like, literally stacked with talent,
16:25taking on teams that don't have much.
16:28So, yeah, I don't care how good of a coach you are.
16:31If you're facing a team with that sort of talent, you ain't going to win.
16:34I mean, it's completely different.
16:36So, like, you look at some of the greatest coaches of all time.
16:38And as good as they are schematically, they're really great recruiters.
16:42They were able to get guys into the program and then be able to let those guys go play.
16:48You know, some of those programs, I don't even know how much development goes on.
16:52We just get to see the guy play a bunch.
16:53So, it looks like he's developing, but really, he's just a badass dude.
16:57So, yeah, no, it doesn't matter what Bill Belichick does at this point.
17:02They've got to get better.
17:03And it's not going to happen overnight.
17:04You can't bring guys in off the street.
17:06And so, I think UNC is going to have their hands full this season.
17:10Brady Quinn, watch Fox's Big Noon Sunday.
17:13It happens to be a very good program.
17:14They're in Ames, Iowa.
17:16Big Noon kickoff.
17:17It's on Saturday.
17:18I think what's on?
17:19But you lost.
17:21Ames, Iowa.
17:21But you lost.
17:22I love the show.
17:23It's my favorite show.
17:23I love it.
17:24I love it.
17:25I don't like any of you guys, but I love it.
17:26I watched that and then Terry Bradshaw, the time of my life.
17:29What are you, DVR it?
17:31You watch it on Sunday?
17:32Hey, Tom, my son.
17:33Best Saturday show.
17:34I'm telling you, I've never missed an episode.
17:36Best Saturday show on Sundays.
17:38That's when it's a Hawks day.
17:39When I asked Brady to come on, he's like, when are you guys on anymore?
17:42Nobody knows.
17:44No, because you asked me, like, oh, can you come on in five minutes?
17:47I'm like, no.
17:49I can't, Hawk.
17:50I'm driving my two daughters to soccer practice or something.
17:54You still not snack at all?
17:55Just three meals a day?
17:57Yeah, I don't snack.
17:58I don't know.
17:59By the way, it's not very manly to snack.
18:01You know, like, you have a protein bar, protein, that's like a meal at that point.
18:05You're not snacking.
18:06Oh, my God.
18:07It's a lot of snacks on protein kind bars all show long.
18:10Got to get that whey in, Brady.
18:12Got to get that whey in.
18:13You're telling me it's not manly?
18:14By the way, do you even know how they make whey protein?
18:16It's like, once you look into that, you're like, oh, I don't eat that anymore.
18:19All right.
18:23I'm saying there's other forms of protein.
18:25You don't have to eat just whey.
18:27But don't look into how they make whey protein.
18:29It's like an offshoot, like, byproduct of, like, you know, like, milk.
18:33It's not good.
18:35It's not good.
18:35You're telling me it's not manly to sit on the couch and eat a box of Cheez-Its and a 7-Up-Zero?
18:42I mean, what's that?
18:43Sounds pretty data.
18:44That doesn't sound like something crowded with you.
18:45Really?
18:46That feels so manly to me.
18:48Hey, Brady, whenever I do something, I just say it with a deep voice.
18:51Cheez-Its.
18:52That's true.
18:53See?
18:54He's got more bass.
18:56Bass is very vascular.
18:57You see how that sounds better when you say, I'm eating some Cheez-Its.
19:00That's right.
19:01All right, well, better luck next season to your Fighting Irish.
19:05I can't wait to host you guys up in the South, Ben.
19:07It's going to be fantastic.
19:08I told you it was coming.
19:09I told you it was coming.
19:11Yeah, we'll try to go to the Grotto or even Basilica.
19:14Hopefully, that place doesn't start on fire with you walking in there.
19:16It'll be great.
19:18It'll be great.
19:19We'll see you, Brady.
19:20See you, guys.
19:21Congrats on the win.
