00:00I thought it would feel one of two ways today on the show, and I don't think it feels either
00:07of those ways, because I am not despondent after last night's loss.
00:11I'm not elated after last night's loss.
00:17You know, I imagine you can speak to a crowd or anyone who gets into sports, any player,
00:23any coach, the dream scenario is there's a minute left on the clock.
00:32We have to score a touchdown, and if we score a touchdown, we win the championship.
00:37Or if you get into basketball, it's give me the ball, 10 seconds left, one bucket, and
00:44we win the championship.
00:46And they had that moment last night.
00:48We all had that moment last night.
00:50We sat through the game.
00:51We had sat through the entire college football playoffs.
00:54There were ups and downs, but here they are at Hard Rock Stadium.
00:58I mean, this is so cool, but here they are at Hard Rock Stadium.
01:01You have Carson Beck, big NIL investment, huge name, comes to your school, and Mario Cristobal,
01:11year four, and it's one drive, a couple minutes left, score a touchdown, you win the natty.
01:19And it didn't work out exactly the way you wanted it to work out.
01:25But, man, to be in that situation after the season that they had, I was having lunch with
01:31some friends today, and I was like, you know, if I told you after SMU or Louisville that this
01:36was going to be the scenario at the end of the season to win a national championship,
01:39you'd have signed up for it every time.
01:40And it was cool up until the pick.
01:43I would tell you this.
01:46We were texting last night.
01:48I was like, this is football.
01:49This is what two good teams do.
01:50It's going to be a single-digit game.
01:53Somebody's going to have the ball, and they can either milk the clock or they can go win
01:57the game.
01:57That was an amazing football game.
02:00Those coaching staffs were so prepared.
02:04They outcoached us in the first half.
02:06Third quarter, you saw Mario and Shannon Dawson and that damn Heatherman come out.
02:11Heatherman had a hell of a game plan in the first half, too.
02:13So even them scoring 10 points, when they were blitzing off the edge and they were busting
02:17Mendoza in the back of the head over and over again, like, it was, you know, I love X and
02:22O's.
02:22I'm watching the game.
02:23I'm like, okay.
02:24Oh, they got him.
02:26Okay.
02:26They got our run game down with our heavy package.
02:28Like, that was an amazing coaching.
02:31We were more talented, and it came down to the last drive.
02:37Everyone talks about three phases of the game.
02:40This is the, I gave the good news first, because I really enjoy watching that game.
02:45Everybody talks about three phases of the game.
02:48We outplayed them defensively.
02:50We were even with them offensively.
02:53Their special teams won the game.
02:55We missed a field goal, and we had a block pump for a touchdown.
02:58That's 10 points.
03:00So they, the special teams is nothing sexy to talk about, but those two plays, that missed
03:06field goal and that damn block pump for a touchdown, was what dictated the game.
03:11And pass all that, Hawk.
03:14You still had a chance with a minute left to drive down and win the game, and Carson back
03:19through that pick.
03:20Nobody held that corner in the flat.
03:21Like, it was, it was great coaching.
03:25It was great players making plays, and Malachi Tony made plays.
03:30They had a great plan against Malachi.
03:32They weren't letting Malachi Tony beat you.
03:34If you saw every time he moved, if he, if he whispered, if he farted, they were putting
03:39three people on him.
03:41Mark Fletcher, who was the MVP of the playoffs, went and got him a 57-yard run.
03:45Like, everything you thought was going to happen, happened, and Carson back couldn't
03:49finish it.
03:50It was, that's what football is, fellas.
03:52Last night was the epitome of the two best teams in the world playing for something.
03:57That's, I felt that watching the game.
03:59I said to myself, I think we are definitely watching the two best teams in college football.
04:05And I think one of the reasons that Malachi Tony fielded that punt at the five, which really
04:12ended up biting them because that led to the block field goal, the block punt.
04:17I think one of the reasons he fielded that was because they had shut him down so much
04:23and made him like, you're right.
04:25They were not going to let Malachi Tony get the ball and beat them.
04:29And so I think he so desperately wanted to make something happen.
04:34He's a smart guy.
04:35He knows not to field that punt, but I think he so desperately wanted to make something happen.
04:40And he ended up fielding that punt.
04:42And then, you know, there was the block punt deep in your own end zone, which was a bad
04:48block on that punt.
04:49It was too lackadaisical of a punt for that situation, but that doesn't happen if you don't
04:53field the ball at the five regardless.
04:56But there were scenarios like that.
04:58But like you say, you get down to the end of it, you got one drive.
05:02Hey, score a touchdown, win a natty.
05:05If you don't, they win the natty.
05:08I mean, that's kind of the way it should end up with two of the best teams.
05:12The two best teams in college football didn't go our way, but man, it was, it was something.
05:18Think of the Texas A&M game.
05:20Oh, they beat the hell out of Ohio State, which is surprising, you know, the whole time.
05:24But think of the Ole Miss game.
05:27Carson Beck had to run that, that, that ball in to win the game.
05:30And then Trinidad Chambliss had a chance to win the game at the end with the Hail Mary.
05:35It's what good team, when you start getting into these deep playoff runs, think about
05:39what's going on in the NFL right now with the playoffs of the NFL.
05:42It all comes down to one drive.
05:45You want to see top level football.
05:47And I'll say this as a Gator.
05:49I'm off the bandwagon now because y'all lost.
05:51Oh, really?
05:51We didn't know that was coming.
05:52I'll say, I'll say this now.
05:56It, that was, that is an amazing competitive team.
05:59And even the Malachi Tony thing, Mark Fletcher's short rushing touchdown was Shannon Dawson seeing
06:06if Malachi Tony flinches his pinky toe, they're going to run three guys with him.
06:12That's why Mark Fletcher ran in.
06:14Like it was a X and O game.
06:17Signetti's a hell of a coach.
06:18That coach is a hell of a coach.
06:19I tell you, the Canes got something because Heatherman came out of the box calling that
06:25damn defense.
06:26Mario called a hell of a game.
06:28He managed the clock.
06:28He did everything he was supposed to do with the timeouts and Shannon Dawson won the one
06:34series.
06:34They came and threw it three times in a row.
06:36You saw, it was funny because they showed a picture of him.
06:39He was kind of like, yeah, no, that was a dumb idea.
06:41Let me go on to plan C because plan B is garbage.
06:44Like it was, it was a, it was two coaching staffs that knew exactly what to do, how to
06:50do it.
06:51Malachi Tony was not catching a bubble screen.
06:53If you noticed, they were shooting people at his ankles every time he stopped in the
06:58backfield.
06:58It was, it was a football game of the best coaches and players.
07:04UM's players kept them in the game.
07:06Reuben Bain has some amazing, but Mesidor went crazy.
07:08The guys that we know are great.
07:09We're great.
07:10And since, and, um, Indiana signetting them made sure that those players were not going
07:16to beat them on every play.
07:17It was a, bro.
07:18I don't know if y'all feel this way.
07:19Cause you're emotionally attached to it.
07:21That was supposed to happen.
07:23If Carson Beck, if he throws that ball five, five yards deeper and one yard higher, he scores
07:31that touchdown CJ Daniels.
07:32And it's a whole different game.
07:33Like that's what football is supposed to be.
07:36I enjoyed the hell out of watching that game.
07:38And I'm not going to lie.
07:39The difference ultimately though, was one team hasn't made mistakes all season in Indiana.
07:45And if you want to say it's because they're the oldest team, the more experienced team
07:49fine, but one team all season long played mistake-free football.
07:53I'll tell you just to point one thing out though, they had played mistake-free football
07:58that offsides at the end when they had second and one and it got pushed back to second and
08:04six, they had the game one.
08:05It was salted away and that offsides the uncharacteristic penalty on Indiana almost cost them a national
08:15championship.
08:16But I was waiting at some point, make a mistake.
08:20Mendoza throw one errant pass, uh, uh, uh, uh, you know, a muffed, uh, a botched snap, some,
08:26something like one mistake.
08:29And there was none from them.
08:31And Miami this season was able to overcome constant penalties, constant mistakes, turnovers,
08:38because their talent was just so good.
08:40But against that team, you, you weren't going to be able to overcome it.
08:44You weren't going to be able to overcome the amount of penalties that Miami ended up having
08:48yesterday.
08:49But ultimately, like you said, Crowder, you miss the field goal and you get the block punt
08:55and that team just wasn't going to hand you the game with a mistake of, of their own.
08:59And they didn't, I mean, that, that really was what costs the Canes because other than that,
09:04they played well enough to win the game.
09:08Literally, they played well enough to win the game.
09:10Even after a first half, that was honestly a little embarrassing.
09:13I'm not going to lie to put up a donut in the first half.
09:16They played well enough, even with that.
09:19And it was, it was just their own mistakes.
09:22No.
09:22And this damn 87 and they have NIL.
09:24So I say their names now, Alex Bowman, number 87.
09:27He, he gave, he, he let his team lose the game.
09:33That block field goal.
09:34That wasn't schematic.
09:35That wasn't a mistake.
09:36That was him not doing his damn job.
09:38So I guess it is a mistake, but it wasn't like there was this great punt block on.
09:43It was big number six with the dreads.
09:45I don't know his name, just running around the corner and 87 grazing his elbow.
09:52If he throws his shoulder into the guy's chest, stomach, crotch, anywhere, that punt gets off.
09:59They don't score a touchdown.
10:00And I don't think they score on that drive when they get the punt back.
10:03That was the mistake.
10:04It wasn't the penalties and all of that stuff that everybody said, this is going to kill Miami.
10:11It wasn't that.
10:12It was individual humans do not doing their damn job.
10:15The punter too, though, even though there's not a full out block on your deep in your own territory, in your end zone, punt it quickly.
10:23Like, get that ball off.
10:25Stop with the lackadaisical three-yard walk to the right.
10:30And then it was just that, to me, was the difference in the game.
10:33It started with Malachi Tony fielding the punt at the five.
10:38It was just like a cavalcade of errors in that particular sequence.
10:43They started way too deep.
10:46The 87, the block was non-existent on what looked like an easy way to impede them.
10:53And the punt itself, Kirk Herbstreet and Chris Fowler kept pointing it out on the broadcast.
10:57It was just too lackadaisical for that moment in that situation.
11:01We're going to talk about it.
11:02Gino Toretta is going to join us today.
11:04Joe Zygacki is going to join us today.
11:07Chris Parkins will join us.
11:08Talk about the Dolphins' new head coach.
11:11So let's get a quick look at the headlines with Solana, brought to you by Doral Volkswagen,
11:15home of the Pricito, our lowest price.

11:21I was gutted, man.
11:22I really enjoyed watching the game.
11:23It was a fun game.
11:25But when Carson Beck threw the interception, I really thought it was going to happen.
11:29I saw the ball in the air and I said, oh my God, like it's happening.
11:32Like he launched a ball.
11:34There's going to be someone there.
11:36And there was someone there.
11:37Granted, double coverage.
11:38And like Crowder said, a little longer, a little higher.
11:41And you probably have a national championship, your sixth national championship.
11:45But the way, and they really, I mean, Herbstreit pointed it out so well on the broadcast.
11:51Like the way, because they were double teamed, the way that the safety and the cornerback could
11:56play that the way they wanted to, rather than the way the receiver wanted to.
12:01It was just, it had to be the perfect pass.
12:06Yep.
12:06If some, if there was another receiver on that side of the field, the corner would have to
12:10respect him and would have stayed up a little bit.
12:13Right.
12:14It was like, it was, it, it, it was beautiful football.
12:18X and O football stuff, bro.
12:20It was beautiful football and you saw the better team come out on top.
12:25Indiana's better at, they're, they're a better overall team than Miami, but Miami's more talented
12:32and we saw who won.
12:34Malachi Tony was wide open on that play, man.
12:37Underneath.
12:37He was wide open.
12:39And you didn't need it all.
12:40You didn't need it.
12:41There was 50 seconds left.
12:42Like I, but that's fine.
12:43I know I'm, I'm nitpicking, but he went for the big play.
12:48And by the way, he earned it in that moment.
12:51I was wildly impressed with Carson Beck in the second half because couldn't move the
12:54ball at all in the first quarter.
12:56The Canes couldn't pick up a first down on third down at all.
13:00It was just, it wasn't happening.
13:02It wasn't.
13:03And they had back-to-back drives where sure Fletch had the touchdown.
13:07That dude's just a beast, but he was making big time throws on third down and like he
13:15was doing it.
13:15And we saw it against Ole Miss in that situation.
13:18He delivered.
13:19And I, I really thought he was going to do it again yesterday.
13:24They, it was like a box of one.
13:26Malachi Tony got Randy Moss treatment.
13:29Yeah.
13:29We used to call it and we would flat out say, we'd say when we played the Patriots that
13:33year, we played like a Steve Smith at his prime, Andre Johnson with the Texans.
13:37We, our call would be, you know, whatever base under O double Johnson, like flat out double
13:45wherever he is, we're putting the safety over top of him and somebody on him, man, man, man.
13:50Malachi was getting Randy Moss treatment last night, but then Shannon Dawson saw that.
13:56And that's why Mark Fletcher walked in the end zone for his short touchdown run.
14:00Like it was a very beautiful schematic game.
14:04Malachi was open.
14:05I saw that and everybody was talking about it.
14:07But if, if you're double a teaming somebody, you scheme around it.
14:11You don't scheme into it.
14:12There's two guys on him.
14:13Everybody has a single.
14:15Let's try to throw it to a single guy.
14:16So it's, it was just the back and forth of what good coaches do.
14:20And it was right on by Indiana because we've watched it all season.
14:26Malachi, Tony gets the ball in his hands.
14:28He's going to beat you.
14:29You give him a chance to return a kick.
14:31He's going to beat you.
14:32You get, whether it's the Mally cat or a little screen, he's going to make magic happen.
14:38And Indiana came into it and said, it ain't going to happen tonight.
14:42You'll have to find another way.
14:44It ain't going to happen tonight.
14:47He got the big screen down to the 10.
14:49He got a couple of catches, but he wasn't, there was no way Malachi, Tony was going for
14:53a hundred yards on how that, how that, I mean, he was fighting and scratching for every
14:58yard that he got because they were making him do that.
15:02I think he did end up with a hundred yards and he still got the touchdown.
15:05Yeah.
15:05That nice long reception at the end where he finally was able to break one.
15:08Yeah.
15:11Damn, man.
15:13I know.
15:14I,
15:14I bet on the Canes.
15:17I've wanted them to win.
15:18I was cheering for him.
15:19They covered by the way, they covered.
15:21They did cover.
15:22He was made a nice little payday on that one.
15:24I just, I enjoyed the game more than who won the game or not because it was what football
15:30is supposed to look like.
15:31And overall Hawk, you would agree a wildly successful season.
15:38I know nobody wants to do that today because of the loss, but you can look at it rationally
15:44and say, when the Canes lost to SMU, we were talking about maybe Mario, like questions about
15:52his future here.
15:53It felt like the bottom had fallen out on some promises and it didn't, it hadn't.
16:00And so I love the season.
16:03I know I'm in the minority, uh, on Canes fans.
16:06I love the season.
16:08I love the fact that SNL was doing Michael Irvin parodies because that really signifies
16:15to me that the U is a national story.
16:18And that's what we've been aching for, for a long time.
16:22And they were saying it on the broadcast last night, Scott, Scott Van Pelt was saying it
16:26on the post game, man.
16:27When Miami is relevant in college football, this entire sport feels better.
16:32Um, it was, it was a fantastic season.
16:35There were a couple of times where he thought it was over.
16:37I'm saying during the season, SMU and Louisville, and it wasn't, and there were times where they
16:44needed magic and they got it.
16:46And again, I mean, what more could you ask for one drive when a national championship,
16:53like you could ask for obviously scoring the touchdown, but I mean, you didn't get, I mean,
16:57we watched Oregon get booted off the field by that Indiana team, but we had a chance to
17:04win it at the end, bring it down, score a touchdown.
17:07You're hoisting a trophy.
17:10And, uh, and it was, uh, it was close, but, uh, no cigar.
17:18There was not a, the, the team that won, we know who won.
17:22Um, there was not a distinct difference in that game other than special teams.
17:28Yeah.
17:29I would take Miami.
17:30I would take Miami over Indiana in a lot of different things because of those special
17:34teams.
17:35If that field goal goes in and they don't block that point for a touchdown, I think
17:38Miami is the national champions right now, but the coaches adjusted great clock management.
17:44They made the game fast.
17:45That's what they want to do.
17:46Indiana wanted all this time possession.
17:48Like they've had to score 40 points a game.
17:50Like I was watching the pregame and I'm like, Miami is not letting them get that ball 12
17:54times.
17:55They might get that damn thing seven times.
17:57Cause they're not going to let them sit around and just drive down the field on them over
18:01and over again.
18:02Exactly how it played out.
18:03It played out.
18:04And you had the ball with a minute left to win it.
18:08Yep.
18:09Football baby.
18:10It's that was football last night.
18:12I'm, I'm excited even with the laws.
18:14Cause that was football.
18:16Uh, anything in the headlines?
18:17Cause I want to have enough time with Gino.
18:18Oh yeah.
18:19The dolphins have a new head coach.
18:20They do.
18:21What's his name?
18:22Jeff Halfley.
18:22Jeff Halfley is the defensive coordinator for the green Bay Packers.
18:27We talked about it yesterday.
18:28The connection, uh, seamless.
18:30It would appear between J E S and now his guy from green Bay.
18:36All right.
18:37How are your friends?
18:38Hope he's good.
18:39Hope he's good.
18:40The Panthers lost to the San Jose sharks, but who cares?
18:42Sergei Bobrovsky threw down the gloves and went to, to, to, to go murder.
18:48That goalie fight.
18:49You don't see it.
18:50And it was, uh, amazing.
18:54Bob ain't went no BS.
18:56I like that.
18:58Yes.
18:58I heard him.
18:59I was listening to Toby Leroy.
19:00His quote was like, yeah.
19:02And once I decided to go down there, I'm going down there.
19:06No, no questions.
19:07There was no talking.
19:08He's a robot.
19:09Yeah.
19:09He said, once I, once I started skating, I'm gonna get this fade more on that later.
19:14Cause some of the, the details of goalie fights in general, make that even more special.
19:19The heat did get blown out in golden state yesterday, one 35 to one 12.
19:25Uh, if you missed it, look up bam out of bios night last night.
19:28Cause, uh, I don't know how I can defend that.
19:31Jimmy Butler did leave the game.
19:33He was carried off the floor.
19:35He tore his ACL.
19:36He's done.
19:37Damn.
19:37Uh, Kane's hoops tonight.
19:38They're going to host FSU.
19:40It's Coach L night.
19:40That's right.
19:41We're going, we're going to the game.
19:42Are you going Crowder?
19:43You didn't come to the studio today.
19:45It would lead me to believe that you're not going to celebrate Coach L.
19:47I totally forgot, but I do have to fly out tonight.
19:51Oh, you didn't forget it.
19:52Cause you had it on our text thread several times.
19:54I know I got to go to Boston.
19:56I love when he lies.
19:57Like he lies right to us when we know that he knows who does that.
20:05Damn.
20:06He ain't said nothing all damn day, man.
20:07He ain't said nothing for 23 minutes.
20:09Now you want to say something crazy.
20:12What's your damn stomach?
20:14In South Florida.
20:15Uh, right now it is in the seventies tonight.
20:19It'll be in the seventies.
20:21It's your weather.
20:22I think sixties.
