00:00Training camp, they did it to Miami's offense on Friday during the joint practice.
00:05Tua had thrown one interception the entire training camp.
00:09On Friday, he threw three to the Bears defense.
00:11They also forced three forced fumbles, and a lot of it has to do with that man.
00:17Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen brings a ton of experience to this Bears team.
00:21A couple of new additions to the starters on defense as well.
00:25It's a D that teams are going to have to reckon with.
00:28Now let's go to the other side of the football.
00:30And Jasmine Baker is going to talk about quarterback Tyson Bajan.
00:34Tyson Bajan has been all business throughout the offseason and training camp,
00:38busy adjusting to a new offensive system.
00:41When head coach Ben Johnson asked about his camp performance,
00:45Johnson said, he's been phenomenal.
00:47He's smart as a whip, and I appreciate the seriousness and intent he brings
00:51every time he walks into a room.
00:53He's locked in, he's focused, and I think his teammates feel that from him.
00:57Back to you upstairs.
00:59Jasmine, welcome to the team.
01:00Thanks so very much.
01:01We'll see a lot of Bajan, as Stacey mentioned, in the first half today.
01:04Bears won the toss and elected to receive, so we'll see Ben Johnson's offense on the field
01:11to start the day.
01:13There is a kickoff change this year.
01:15Remember, last year was the addition of the dynamic kickoff,
01:18so that's what the formation is.
01:19This year, there was added incentive to increase the return rate.
01:24About one out of every three kicks were returned last year.
01:27Touchbacks went to the 30, the traditional touchback.
01:30This year, it's up to the 35, hoping to boost up that return rate.
01:35It went from one out of five to one out of three, so that's a nice jump.
01:38But about, if you're shy of midfield, every 10 yards equals about a 10% greater chance
01:44of scoring that obviously goes up exponentially when you get to midfield.
01:47Yeah, and teams, again, have now invested in special teams.
01:50Think about the Bears.
01:51Devin Duvernay has been back receiving right now.
01:55This guy was a Pro Bowl returner a couple of years ago in Baltimore,
01:58so teams investing because it will be a big factor here in 2025.
02:02A couple of kick return touchdowns in his career with the Ravens.
02:05Comes over from Jacksonville, and they're going to avoid him right out of the gate.
02:09And it will be Kyle Monongai, the rookie out of Rutgers, getting an opportunity.
02:15A lot of running backs, receivers, and DBs were getting chances on the return.
02:20Yeah, that ball will be spotted near the 25-yard line.
02:23And Tyson Bajan, who made four starts two years ago when Justin Fields was hurt,
02:28was only used in blowout action last season.
02:31Tyson Bajan has such a unique style and approach.
02:35Intentional.
02:35That's the word Ben Johnson uses when he walks in a room.
02:38And there's a seriousness, guys, about him that he kind of extends to this offense
02:44in terms of his understanding of what Ben's trying to accomplish.
02:47There's all these shifts in motions.
02:49You're number three for Bajan, who played a similar style in his Division II college days
02:53at Shepard in West Virginia.
02:58Monongai is the back.
02:59First pass of the day is incomplete.
03:01Looking for the new tight end, the first-round pick, number 10 pick, in fact,
03:05out of Michigan, Colston, Loveland.
03:07Love how you said he got a couple of starts a few years ago.
03:11You're 2-2 as a starter, as a backup.
03:12That's all you can ask your backup to be.
03:15I remember last year, Adam, we said, hey, how did you prepare going into year two?
03:18He said he grinded his face off.
03:20I don't know what he did this offseason, but he looked terrific at training camp.
03:24On second down, play action to Monongai, and a sack for Miami.
03:33It is Willie Gay, Jr., who's put together a fabulous career.
03:37He played with Dennis Allen in New Orleans.
03:39He gets the sack for Miami.
03:42Yeah, Tyson, he tries to step up in the pocket.
03:45We're going to get big into the left tackle position.
03:47The back, just not stout enough.
03:50Nowhere to go when he steps up, and he has to take the sack.
03:52Like it, hey, just eat it, live to play another down.
03:57One of the things about Ben Johnson's Detroit offense,
04:00I didn't see a ton of third and long because they were so effective in the run game.
04:06Paget's got five in the pattern.
04:08Here comes the rookie, Loveland, and he'll get past the original line of scrimmage,
04:12but it's going to be a three and out for the Bears offense to start the day.
04:18Getting Loveland involved early.
04:20Third and 16, it's a good check down.
04:22They're playing a zone defense, really a one-one funnel where they bring the safety down.
04:27And that's all that's there.
04:28You've got to take what they give you, give yourself a little bit of room,
04:30and, hey, let's be honest, you've got an outstanding punter
04:34who can really flip the field position for the Chicago Bears.
04:37So, want more and be more productive,
04:40but opening series jitters, getting it out of the way.
04:43Torrey Taylor definitely punted more than Caleb Williams told him he would last year.
04:48He was second in the league in total punts.
04:51Malik Washington on the return for Miami.
04:54And he spins his way to good field position past the 40-yard line.
04:57There is Mike McDaniel now in year number four as the head coach of Miami.
05:06It feels like perhaps a little bit more pressure on McDaniel and the Dolphins this year
05:10after they missed the playoffs last year.
05:11Yeah, certainly with Mike McDaniel, but, you know, interestingly,
05:16the questions about this team after what we saw from Tyreek Hill
05:20at the end of last season at New York Jets loss, are they too soft?
05:25They're sick of answering the question.
05:27Certainly didn't have an opportunity to be on Friday at these joint practices
05:31because Chicago was all over them.
05:33And Tua Tunga-Vailoa has dealt with concussion issues over the last couple of years,
05:37only made 11 starts last year.
05:38Very high completion rate.
05:41Early flag is thrown on the first Miami snap as Devon Achan,
05:46an excellent running back, gets the carry.
05:48Dolphins are playing more of their starters than the Bears are.
05:52Scott Novak is our official.
05:53Legal formation on the offense.
05:55Number 79 was lined up in the backfield.
05:57That's a five-yard penalty.
05:59First down.
05:59They're going to call this a lot more this year, the illegal formation penalties.
06:02They're trying to get tackles up around the waist of the center,
06:07something that we saw a lot of with the Chiefs a couple of years ago.
06:10A lot of teams cheated their tackles back last year.
06:13That's why the formation penalty is called.
06:16Just trying to get that extra second where they can, you know, take on those edge rushers.
06:20Also, the speed motions.
06:21A lot of teams were abusing the privilege with the quick motions,
06:25and they're going to call that a little bit more stringent here in 2025 as well.
06:30So the Bears already in a good position defensively at first and long for Miami.
06:34Right back to Achan.
06:36And he pumps past the 40 again, gets that penalty yardage back.
06:39You'll notice Nashawn Wright at cornerback starting here for the Chicago Bears.
06:44It's been quite a competition with Jalen Johnson dealing with that soft tissue injury.
06:48They're hopeful that he'll be back by week one for the Minnesota Monday Night Football game.
06:54But it really is, Jim, a competition between that young man now in his fifth season
06:58and Terrell Smith, the young speedster.
07:00Bears got longer at corner.
07:02You mentioned Wright as one of them.
07:03He's got long arms.
07:05Dennis Allen is really going to talk about being aggressive at the line of scrimmage
07:08as you see the corner rolled up to the receiver on the back side right now.
07:12So it's an in-to-round from the league, Washington.
07:15It's read well on cue by Nashawn Wright.
07:19And got a little bit of help from the rest of that front line.
07:21Tano Passigno, who's played a lot of football for Dennis Allen, was there too.
07:25Just what Stacey was talking about right there.
07:27You can't see to the far right, but Nashawn Wright is up in the receiver's face.
07:31Watch him.
07:31He sheds the block, gets up, he makes the tackle.
07:34Long arms extension.
07:36That's not the only way you can be aggressive,
07:38but when you've got aggressive corners at the line of scrimmage really helps out.
07:42Long arms to the tune of about a 78-inch wingspan for that young man.
07:47By the way, he was coached by Al Harris in Dallas when he entered the league.
07:51Al Harris now the defensive backs coach for the Bears.
07:55The lefty Tua dumps it off from the league.
07:57Washington, and he gets run down right away by Josh Blackwell.
08:02And he prevents a first down just shy of midfield.
08:05We'll see if McDaniel's aggressive near midfield on fourth and short.
08:09Really love Josh Blackwell.
08:11He really has done a lot of things for the Bears over the past few years.
08:14Gets a two-year extension, has played nickel, he's played safety.
08:17You see him rally down, creates this fourth down situation here early in this preseason game.
08:24You'll often see this, and you'll see this more and more.
08:27You'll probably see this from the Bears.
08:28You're near midfield, fourth down and short.
08:31You're going to see a lot more teams go for it.
08:33Ben Johnson's team with Dan Campbell as the headman, notorious for that.
08:41Tunga Bailoa gets rid of it to Washington.
08:44He beat Nashawn Wright that time on the near side.
08:47It is a first down for the Dolphins.
08:48Just a really good job by the receiver, finding space over there in the flat for Tua.
08:54But, guys, it's important.
08:56Why are we seeing Tua Tunga Bailoa play in his first preseason game ever?
09:00I'm told he lobbied.
09:01He lobbied with Mike McDaniel to get in this game.
09:04He wanted some action with his guys.
09:05He did not perform well on Friday in their joint practice.
09:08As Lou talked about, those three picks maybe needs a little bit of a redemption here today on Sunday football.
09:14That's a good point you bring up.
09:16It's the first time since 2021 that he's playing in a preseason opener.
09:21Obviously, that's a big discussion that takes place among coaches across the league.
09:25A-chan with a nice play.
09:27Chris Williams wraps him up.
09:29Williams played every game last year for the Bears.
09:32It's a good game, and it'll bring up second down and four for Miami's offense.
09:36Yeah, good penetration there by Chris Williams.
09:38And really tracking it down, not only played in every game, did add three sacks for Chicago.
09:43And that's going to be really the talk.
09:45Can they get the double-digit sacks from the outside?
09:48We'll get into Sweat.
09:49We'll get into Dio, who they brought over from Indianapolis.
09:52Can their interior, with a revamp to new guys like Brady Jarrett, get some push as well?
10:04Tunga Bailoa floats in.
10:05That's going to be incomplete.
10:07Going to bring up third down and four.
10:09So let's dive in a little deeper into this defensive front.
10:12We know about Montez Sweat bringing the pressure.
10:15The addition of Jarrett, Odangbo, veteran guys who've got a lot of experience, Jarrett in particular.
10:20What do you guys like about these additions?
10:22I love Grady Jarrett.
10:23We were talking off the air.
10:24Dabo Sweeney, where he played in college at Clemson, said if he were to ever start a program,
10:29it would be with Grady Jarrett.
10:30And I thought it was interesting that Ben Johnson said,
10:33this guy does everything right in the locker room.
10:35From the meetings, from the practices,
10:37he wants everybody to emulate what he brings to the table.
10:44They show some pressure.
10:45They bring an extra body.
10:47Tunga Bailoa to the sticks.
10:49And it is caught by Malik Washington.
10:51Got brought down by the rookie, Reuben Hippolite,
10:54who we're going to pay a lot of attention to this afternoon.
10:57Stace, give me a sense of what you like about this defense.
10:59Well, obviously the aggression, right?
11:01And the whole philosophy for Dennis Allen is distort the timing of receivers,
11:07attack the opposing offense.
11:09And these players have bought into it.
11:11It's going to be interesting to see what they do with Montez Sweat,
11:13because they believe, Dennis believes, he's got untapped potential.
11:17You'll even see him inside on the inside shoulder of the offensive tackle this season.
11:22They're going to use him all over the place.
11:23Kind of like he did with Camp Jordan last year in New Orleans.
11:25There's a handoff for A-Chan.
11:30And another strong run by Devon A-Chan.
11:33And he's picked up 11 for a first down.
11:37Time for the players to watch.
11:38They are brought to you by Advocate Healthcare.
11:39We've seen both of the plays that Reuben Hippolite has made.
11:43We'll see Luther Burden a little bit more on offense.
11:45Luther Burden can take the top off a defense.
11:48It certainly plays with physicality inside.
11:50And I know Stacey watched him a lot in training camp.
11:53They remember even lining him up like a chess piece.
11:56Sometimes putting him in the backfield.
11:57So another weapon for Ben Johnson to tap into.
12:02Hippolite is a fourth-round pick out of Maryland.
12:06What a very productive college career.
12:09He's going to get most of the run today in this first half.
12:12And linebacker, a little eye candy from the Dolphins offense.
12:16And again on the end of round two.
12:18Malik Washington again.
12:19He lost that football, but it's out of bounds.
12:21It will stay with the Dolphins at the 17-yard line.
12:25Noah Sewell was in there to punch that ball loose.
12:28Yeah, just a heads-up play by Noah Sewell.
12:31One of the three Sewell brothers here on this one.
12:34But it was guys like Nashawn Wright getting involved once again.
12:38He's had such a good camp.
12:40And Dennis Allen was so anxious to see a lot of these guys.
12:43We keep mentioning Ruben Hippolite.
12:45Shocking.
12:46The guy isn't invited to the combine.
12:48He's not invited to the senior bowl.
12:50They got him in for a 30 visit and absolutely fell in love with him.
12:554-3-9-40 time for Ruben Hippolite, which is elite at the linebacker position.
13:00Tunga Vailoa bobbled it but got it to Jalen Wright.
13:03Maybe a yard.
13:04It'll be third down and short.
13:05These are the types of situations that the Bears have to get off the field defensively.
13:11Yeah, key red zone.
13:12That's an area the Bears struggled last year.
13:15In terms of their defense, they finished second overall,
13:18but they got worn down towards the end of the year.
13:21And it's because their offense was lagging.
13:23I think if they can take care of really get more complimentary football,
13:27this should be a fresh defense for Dennis Allen as they roll along.
13:30And we'll see if they can get the stop here.
13:32You know, Edmonds and Edwards will be the main linebackers,
13:36but most of the starters sitting today.
13:40Third down and three for Tunga Vailoa.
13:43Just a four-man rush on the slam,
13:45and it is grabbed by Taj Washington for a first down.
13:49A lot of man coverage by Dennis Allen.
13:55That's where he wants to be aggressive.
13:58Those guys at the line of scrimmage, as Stacey alluded to,
14:01they've got those long arms disrupt, disrupt the timing of the route.
14:05That time just not enough,
14:07and Miami is able to get an easy completion for a first down in man coverage.
14:11Expect the Bears to be in a lot of man.
14:13It's total opposite of what it was under Matt Eberflus.
14:16Matt Eberflus is more of a Tampa 2 guy.
14:18This will be a more aggressive defense going man-to-man.
14:23First and goal from the 8.
14:25Here is Jalen Wright.
14:27And he's grabbed by Nashawn Wright
14:29and muscles his way down to the 2-yard line.
14:33This was not a good offense for Miami a year ago.
14:36They didn't cash in at a lot of these red zone opportunities.
14:39They weren't particularly good on third down.
14:41Huge change from what we saw two years ago.
14:43The Dolphins were one of the scariest offenses in the NFL two seasons ago.
14:47Watunga Bailoa was relatively healthy.
14:53Frank Smith is the offensive coordinator.
14:56McDaniel calls the plays for Tua,
14:58including this one on second and goal.
15:04Westbrook-Ekine a new addition,
15:06sliding over to the end of the line.
15:07To block for Wright.
15:11And a great shot by Noah Sewell
15:13to grab him and prevent him from getting to the end zone.
15:16Got some help from Jonathan Owens as well.
15:19And it's third and goal.
15:20And this is important because as you watch this replay right here,
15:24obviously a goal line stand for the Bears
15:27as we're now at third and one.
15:29But they did not like their run defense last year.
15:32This is a problem for them a season ago, 28th in the league.
15:35Kevin Byard told us this week,
15:37if we want to be the best defense in the NFL,
15:39we've got to improve our run defense.
15:41This is critical for them down here on the goal line.
15:45Third down and goal.
15:48Light is the back.
15:49Back to him.
15:55And one of the best red zone defenses in the NFL last year
15:59wants to carry that over.
16:00They get the goal line stand on third down.
16:03Let's see what the decision is on fourth and goal.
16:06Jonathan Ford on the stop.
16:09Yeah, good push on the interior.
16:10Booker's able to come down the line as well.
16:13I go back to play before.
16:14The discipline, too.
16:15Tua tried to draw him off sides,
16:17get a cheap half distance to the goal.
16:19Bears were disciplined down there,
16:21were stout up front,
16:23and Booker is able to come down and make the play.
16:29Looking for a stop on the goal line again.
16:36It is right, and it is a stop,
16:39and it is Sewell,
16:41and the Bears hold on.
16:45Dennis Allen's defense comes up clutch
16:54on the opening Miami drive,
16:56a lengthy one,
16:57but the plays were made
16:59when they needed to be made,
17:01and Noah Sewell had a couple of them.
17:03Punched one out
17:04and wrapped up right
17:05to make sure the Dolphins stay scoreless.
17:07Bears get it with a long field next.
17:09Great stop by the Bears' defense
17:13after a 15-play Miami drive.
17:16Tyson Bajan has a 96-yard field in front of him.
17:19Devin Duvernay, number 12, is in motion.
17:22And here is Kyle Madongai,
17:23the seventh-round pick out of Rutgers.
17:25He'll get the carry.
17:29Ben Johnson takes over as the head coach,
17:31coming over after three excellent years
17:34as the offensive coordinator.
17:36Took over play-calling duties
17:37about midway through the 21 season,
17:39and Dan Campbell never looked back.
17:40He loved what Ben brought to the table.
17:42Yeah, really is a creative guy,
17:43as I mentioned.
17:44One of the best offensive lines
17:45in football with Detroit,
17:47but you look at the trick playability,
17:49you look at how Jared Goff
17:50elevated his game.
17:51They traded with the Rams
17:53and added what was already
17:54a Super Bowl quarterback.
17:55Granted, they lost their Super Bowl,
17:57but he elevated his game,
17:59and Jared Goff has thrown more touchdowns
18:01than any quarterback
18:02in the National Football League
18:03over the past couple years.
18:05There's Duvernay out to the 10-yard line
18:08to set up a third down and medium.
18:10Yeah, Ben Johnson isn't just trying to beat you.
18:12He's trying to dominate you offensively.
18:15I mean, you talk to players,
18:16they want 40 points a game.
18:18Now, I don't know, guys,
18:19if that's going to happen here in Chicago,
18:20but they feel like they've put
18:22enough versatile pieces together.
18:24A lot of these guys with the yak ability,
18:26yards after catch,
18:27and they really love,
18:29with an empty set here,
18:30Kyle Monungay out of Rutgers.
18:32A lot of versatility in Detroit.
18:34They use their running backs,
18:35they use their receivers
18:35in multiple positions.
18:37We've seen that on this play.
18:38Bajit floats it off the hand
18:40of his intended target
18:41in Luther Burden III.
18:44A little too tall for both.
18:46Ends up landing harmlessly incomplete.
18:48It's back-to-back three and outs
18:49for the Bears' offense.
18:51Luther Burden, he's a six-foot target.
18:53Like to see him go up
18:54with two hands on this one.
18:56Makes the attempt with one.
18:57I think he knew he was going to get
18:58dotted there by the corner
19:01on the back side,
19:02but he has really come on strong
19:03as of late.
19:04I think the last four practices
19:06maybe had some early mistakes
19:07because he was out with a hamstring,
19:09but has been strong as of late
19:11and will be involved
19:12in this offense in 2025.
19:14Torrey Taylor, great punt,
19:1657 yards to force Eskridge
19:18all the way back behind
19:20the 35-yard line.
19:22But he's able to get away
19:23from the initial surge
19:24and he'll take it to midfield.
19:26Good job by Eskridge.
19:27Terrell Smith finally brought him down
19:29after Luke Elkin, the long snapper,
19:32missed the first tackle.
19:34We're back after this.
19:39Last three seasons
19:40as the head coach
19:41of the New Orleans Saints
19:42was fired after a seven-game
19:44losing streak
19:45midway through last year.
19:46Remember, he replaced Sean Payton
19:47but was Payton's long-time
19:48defensive coordinator.
19:50Got a lot of credit
19:51for some very impressive
19:52New Orleans defenses.
19:54You pointed out and reminded me
19:55that they had Tom Brady's number
19:57when Tom was with Tampa Bay
19:58for those couple of seasons
19:59and D.A. knows how to game plan
20:01for QBs.
20:02Everybody played to go better.
20:03And I think one of the other aspects
20:05he brings to the table,
20:0623 years as a coach in the NFL,
20:09six as a former head coach.
20:10People forget that.
20:11That's somebody that Ben Johnson
20:13is going to be able to lean upon.
20:15Zach Wilson is the new quarterback
20:16and his toss is a little bit low.
20:19Josh Blackwell brought some pressure
20:21from the safety spot
20:22on the young Zach Wilson
20:24who did not play in a game
20:25for Denver last year
20:27but made 33 starts
20:28for the New York Jets
20:29over three seasons.
20:30He might just be the most important
20:32backup quarterback
20:32in all of the National Football League.
20:35Obviously given Tua Tungo-Vailoa's
20:37concussion history
20:38and they've retaught him, Jim.
20:40I mean, he's gone back
20:41to the technicalities of the position
20:43the Shanahan way
20:44under Mike McDaniel.
20:46McDaniel, of course,
20:47right off that Kyle Shanahan tree.
20:50He's in San Francisco
20:51as the coordinator
20:52before taking over in Miami.
20:55And Wilson is able to find
20:56Nick Westbrook-Akine,
20:58a former Tennessee Titan,
20:59had some productive seasons
21:00in Nashville.
21:02And he takes it all the way down
21:03to the 16-yard line.
21:05It's a 36-yard connection.
21:09Yeah, a little in-cut over the middle
21:11and obviously Major Burns
21:13missed tackle.
21:14That's something that
21:15you're going to have to work on.
21:16You've got to break down.
21:17You've got to square up.
21:18It's in the open field
21:19and when you don't,
21:20it could be out the gate.
21:21That's why you're playing safety.
21:22You're the last line of defense.
21:24They have to make that play.
21:25And we're already getting
21:26a little deeper
21:27into the depth chart
21:28on that back end
21:29with guys like Major Burns
21:31and Alex Cook out there.
21:33There is a handoff
21:34for Jalen Wright
21:36and a good stuff up front
21:37by Ruben Hippolite
21:39and got plenty of help
21:40by Zach Pickens.
21:41Ruben Hippolite has such speed
21:45and the thing the Bears
21:46love most about him
21:47is you see him
21:48just jump into this tackle
21:50right here.
21:52His, the violence
21:53with which he plays the game,
21:55that really flashed on tape
21:56when they watched him.
21:57I told you guys
21:57about the 30 visit.
21:59The person, the leader,
22:00the character,
22:01he's got all of it
22:02and he was one of the guys
22:03that Dennis Allen
22:04was really anxious
22:05to see out here today
22:06in terms of his response.
22:08He played with
22:09Tuatunga-Vailoa's brother
22:10at Maryland, Talia,
22:12for three seasons.
22:13Or for two seasons,
22:14I should say.
22:15This one goes out
22:16to Taj Washington
22:17who's able to maneuver
22:18around Blackwell.
22:19He's got to be
22:20a little bit sharper
22:21to Blackwell
22:21out on the perimeter.
22:22Cook drills him out.
22:24And it's a gain of 10.
22:27Yeah, simple flat route
22:29and Blackwell,
22:30well, he missed the pick.
22:31He was able to avoid the pick.
22:32Now just make the tackle.
22:34Again, break down and tackle.
22:35Typically,
22:36this is what happens
22:37in training camps
22:38and early in the season.
22:39Tackling is not
22:40where it needs to be.
22:42And we've seen
22:42a couple of plays
22:43here on this series
22:44where players
22:44have got to break down
22:45and bring the player
22:46down on the offensive
22:47side of the ball.
22:49See if they run the play.
22:51They will not.
22:51And that will take us
22:52to the end
22:52of the opening period.
22:55Bears offense
22:56didn't get much going
22:57in the first.
22:58Bears defense
22:58gave up some big chunk plays
23:01on the first two drives.
23:02They got the goal line
23:03stand the first time.
23:04We'll see what's in store
23:05in quarter number two
23:06of the preseason.
23:07Bears and Dolphins scoreless.
23:08We practice
23:15where things got
23:16a little bit testy
23:17between the two teams.
23:18Bears defense
23:18in particular
23:19was getting very aggressive.
23:22Dolphins ended up
23:23getting into some
23:24infighting of their own.
23:26So some drama
23:26before the preseason
23:27even began
23:28for these two clubs.
23:30Let's just say
23:30I was at that practice
23:31there were some
23:32questionable hits.
23:33But this is what
23:34Dennis Allen wants.
23:36I mean they're trying
23:37to retrain this group
23:38and tackling
23:39get comfortable
23:41being uncomfortable.
23:42That's the message.
23:43Third down and one.
23:44Wilson off the back foot
23:46nearly hauled in
23:47by Dee Eskridge.
23:49There is a penalty flag
23:50with Alex Cook
23:51the former Panther
23:52Bear and Giant
23:52in coverage.
23:54And I love just our
23:55discussion yesterday.
23:56Pass interference
23:57on the defense
23:58number 37.
23:59The foul is in the end zone.
24:01Ball be placed
24:01at the one yard line.
24:03First down.
24:03Loved our discussion
24:04yesterday with Dennis Allen.
24:06Really just talk about
24:06the history of the Bears defense
24:08and what these players
24:09need to represent.
24:11You know it's a big part of it.
24:13Know your history.
24:14Know your tradition.
24:15And this city expects it.
24:16So Dennis Allen
24:17he's up for the challenge
24:18and he's challenging
24:19any new players
24:20that have been added
24:21this offseason.
24:23Fresh set of downs
24:24from the one yard line
24:25after the pass interference
24:26pedal Leon Cook.
24:28Alexander Madison
24:29former Viking
24:31and now Dolphin
24:32gets crunched
24:34in the backfield
24:34for a loss.
24:36The Bears
24:36defensive line
24:38has looked very sharp
24:39in the early goings
24:40and a lot of pressure
24:41situations being backed up.
24:45Replay a little F strong
24:46just trying to run
24:47a little power play
24:48to the right
24:49and the Bears were stout
24:50in there.
24:51Williams again
24:51seeing his jersey
24:52right in.
24:54You know really making
24:55the stuff
24:55and just finishes short
24:56of the goal line
24:57but that's where
24:58you got to be physical
24:59it's where you got to be stout
25:00and we'll see what
25:01Dominic Robinson
25:02in the front
25:03could do on this play.
25:05Not a second and goal.
25:07Fake it to Madison
25:08trying to dump it off
25:10for the tight end
25:10that time.
25:11Good pressure
25:11by Noah Sewell
25:12who's had a good
25:14first two drives thus far.
25:16You mentioned
25:16Williams
25:17Chris Williams
25:18via the Cleveland Browns.
25:20He's a guy
25:21this team is really
25:22excited about.
25:22He kind of retooled
25:23his body
25:24attacked his body
25:25got lean
25:26and he's kind of
25:27flashed a little bit
25:28here through camp.
25:29I like what you said
25:30Adam about Noah Sewell.
25:32He has really made
25:32a lot of plays.
25:33Probably has the edge
25:34over Hippolyte
25:35right now
25:35to be the first
25:36off the bench
25:37but he's been active
25:38in a lot of plays
25:39early here
25:39caused Zach Wilson
25:41to be incomplete
25:41on that play.
25:44Another third and goal
25:45from the goal line
25:46it's Madison
25:46and he lunges ahead
25:49for the touchdown.
25:49Madison with the Raiders
25:55last season
25:56signs a one-year deal
25:57with Miami.
25:58Remember they lost
25:59Raheem Mostert
26:00who basically switched
26:00spots with Madison
26:01now in Vegas
26:02and a touchdown
26:04for Alexander.
26:05Alexander Madison
26:06has had a really good
26:07training camp
26:07and at some point
26:09it's not bend
26:11don't break
26:12you're broken
26:12and it's been two
26:13goal line stances
26:14now for Dennis Allen's
26:15defense that
26:16they've been put
26:17to the test.
26:18Nice job though
26:19by Miami.
26:22They've had two solid
26:23offensive drives
26:24with big chunk plays
26:25in the early going.
26:27Bajan getting loosened
26:28up for drive number three
26:29and the excellent
26:30Jason Sanders
26:31is the kicker
26:32for Miami
26:33which averaged
26:34just 20 points
26:34a game last year
26:35that's shocking
26:36when you consider
26:37where they were
26:38two seasons ago
26:39near the top
26:39of the NFL charts.
26:41League average
26:41is about 23 points
26:42a game
26:43if you're curious.
26:447-0 Dolphins
26:46we'll see if the Bears
26:47can get some traction
26:48maybe a 5-0
26:49first out
26:49on the next drive.
26:57Bears preseason football
26:59is brought to you
27:00by PNC
27:01the official bank
27:02of the Bears.
27:04Part of the reason
27:05the starters
27:06aren't playing
27:07for the Bears
27:07is that this coaching
27:09staff kind of felt
27:10that they got
27:10their best reps
27:11against the ones
27:12in that joint practice
27:13against Miami.
27:15You're seeing a lot
27:16more of that.
27:16The Bears and Bills
27:17will have a joint practice
27:18next week.
27:19Although we probably
27:19will see some more
27:20of the starters
27:21but that philosophy
27:22has shifted greatly
27:23over the last
27:235-10 years.
27:24And what you didn't see
27:25three hours before kickoff
27:27was a 70-play workout
27:29that Ben Johnson
27:30specifically went through
27:32with his quarterback
27:33Caleb Williams.
27:34It was very intentional.
27:36Jim, it was pretty intense
27:39watching it.
27:40And he's going to go
27:41through another
27:41I assume the team
27:43is off tomorrow
27:43because it's game day
27:44but he'll go through
27:45another 25 plays tomorrow.
27:46So they're really
27:47taxing him
27:48and overloading him
27:49with this playbook.
27:50Devin Duvernay
27:51on a good kickoff
27:52to the 1-yard line.
27:53That's what kickers
27:54are trying to do.
27:54Kick it to the 1.
27:55He only makes it back
27:56to the 20
27:57well short of league average.
27:59So as you mentioned
28:00Caleb Williams
28:01obviously getting
28:01the day off today.
28:02It's the first time
28:03since 2009
28:05that the Bears
28:06had one quarterback
28:07start all of the games
28:10in a single season.
28:11Jake Hummer
28:11was the last to do it.
28:12Yeah, that's a good thing.
28:13There were some ups
28:14there were some downs
28:15obviously the 20 touchdowns
28:16he only had
28:17six interceptions
28:18so he did not
28:19turn it over
28:20but just to piggyback
28:21off of what Stacy said
28:22it's really about
28:24the process.
28:25Caleb had talked
28:25about the process
28:26and even that workout.
28:27Calling the play
28:28spitting it out
28:29the attention to detail
28:30of how Ben Johnson
28:32wants his offense run.
28:34How about this run?
28:35The best run
28:36best play of the day
28:37for the Bears offense.
28:39It's their first
28:39first down
28:40on a 13 yard
28:41Kyle Monongai run
28:43and that's going to be
28:44a big part of this offense.
28:45I mentioned that
28:47the Detroit Lions
28:48offensive line
28:48they ran the football
28:50extremely well
28:51and they do a lot
28:51of play action.
28:52They were number one
28:53in the NFL
28:53in play action.
28:54Caleb Williams
28:54will be under
28:55the center more
28:56in the 56 rushing touchdowns
28:59over the past two years.
29:00Nobody's been better
29:01than Detroit.
29:02Ben wants to emulate
29:03that they want to run
29:04the football
29:04like you just saw
29:05right there.
29:06Right back to Monongai
29:08and he'll muscle
29:09for a few
29:09running into
29:10Willie Gay Jr.
29:12Going to look at
29:13Caleb Williams
29:14during training camp
29:15getting an opportunity
29:16to be under center
29:17more Detroit
29:18ran more play action
29:19than just about anybody.
29:20They use jumbo
29:21offensive line sets
29:22in the top five
29:24of eight.
29:24They use two tight ends
29:25a lot.
29:25That's a big key
29:26for the Bears this year.
29:2712 personnel
29:28could be huge
29:28for this team
29:29but he likes being
29:30under center.
29:30Asked him about it
29:31this week.
29:32Number one
29:32stresses the defense
29:33plays with them
29:34a bit more.
29:34Number two
29:35get some more shots
29:36downfield.
29:37Yeah.
29:38Here's a play action
29:39and a rollout
29:40for Bajan
29:41and he's got
29:42that athleticism.
29:43He's going to try
29:43to gain some yardage.
29:45He stepped out
29:46of bounds though
29:46at the 45-yard line.
29:50That's good enough
29:51for the first down.
29:53And the beauty
29:53really of getting
29:54under center
29:55as Caleb described it
29:56you're making
29:58the play look
29:59the same consistently.
30:00So it's run, run, run,
30:02play action.
30:02Run, run, run, keeper.
30:04Run, run, run.
30:05Oh, we're going to run it.
30:06And so the beauty
30:07of that is the creativity
30:08within Ben's offense.
30:10And again,
30:10it's going to take
30:11the offensive line
30:12to get into
30:12a good chemistry together.
30:15That's why Detroit
30:16in year number three
30:17could run those
30:18ridiculous plays
30:19that they were able
30:20to run.
30:21Downfield shot
30:21for Duvernay
30:22and he's got it.
30:24Devin Duvernay
30:25the new addition.
30:26A nice strike
30:27from Tyson Bajan
30:28for the burst.
30:29Big pass play
30:30of the day
30:30at 18 yards.
30:32Nice pocket
30:32up front as well.
30:33You see the delivery
30:34and this is why
30:36they love Tyson Bajan.
30:37I mean,
30:38he is meticulous
30:39about learning the offense.
30:40He wants to do
30:40everything right
30:41from every drill
30:43that I watched him
30:43at a training camp.
30:44He's always trying
30:45to do it the right way
30:46while he throws
30:47a perfect strike
30:48the right way
30:49the right way
30:50there to Duvernay.
30:51Excellent throw.
30:56From the 38
30:57and a little burst
30:58that time
30:59from Kyle Manonga.
31:01There is a flag thrown
31:02though in the backfield.
31:03that's going to be
31:04holding against the Bears.
31:05Holding.
31:07Offense number 79.
31:08That's a 10-yard penalty.
31:10First time.
31:13Guys,
31:14this takes us
31:14right into the
31:14offensive line.
31:16One of the big battles
31:17today is going to be
31:17at left tackle.
31:18We'll see Theo Benedett
31:19who right now
31:20is listed
31:21as the third right tackle.
31:22He's actually in the mix
31:23along with Braxton Jones
31:25and Ozzy Trapilo
31:26in that left tackle spot.
31:27Now,
31:27Theo Benedett
31:28is the Canadian Eagle.
31:29You guys know that.
31:30I knew you were going
31:31to go to the Canadian
31:31right away.
31:32You know the story
31:34of that, right?
31:35He was just penalized,
31:37but
31:37he's one of the
31:39locker room guys.
31:40We'll get to it
31:41in a second.
31:42After this first
31:42down to 20 play.
31:44Quick out.
31:45There's Duvernay.
31:46Same play
31:46and he picks up
31:47some of that yard.
31:47So the rookie talent
31:49competition last year
31:50when he joined the Bears,
31:51Hard Knocks,
31:53I think,
31:53captured it.
31:54Rips off the pants.
31:56What's there?
31:56It's the bald eagle
31:58speedo,
31:59which I don't know
32:00it goes down in infamy
32:01or becomes like
32:03a trademark.
32:04I was going to say,
32:04does that become
32:04a citizenship issue
32:05with our friends
32:06up north now?
32:07The first year pro
32:07out of the University
32:08of British Columbia.
32:10Born in Toronto,
32:10so on the east side
32:11of Canada.
32:12Raised in Vancouver
32:13on the beautiful west side.
32:14One of the great linemen
32:15in Canadian University football
32:17before he went
32:18to the NFL.
32:19Bajan over the middle
32:20and that's through
32:21the hands of Durham Smythe
32:23who spent the last
32:24seven years
32:25with the Dolphins.
32:26Now he's adding
32:26a little depth
32:27to the tight end room.
32:28Couldn't hold on
32:28to that one.
32:29It's third down and long.
32:30Has the in cut.
32:31Again,
32:32the way Tyson
32:32Bajan process.
32:34You look into his right,
32:35comes back to his in cut.
32:37Hey,
32:37this is the NFL.
32:38You got to make
32:39routine plays routinely.
32:40That's what a lot
32:41of coaches say.
32:41He's got to squeeze
32:42that one.
32:43Durham is known
32:44more as a blocker,
32:45but even he knows
32:46he's got to haul
32:46that one in.
32:48Average a little
32:48over a catch per game
32:50in his 112 games
32:51with Miami.
32:53Bears looking
32:54for their first
32:54third down conversion.
32:55It's a tough one.
32:56They need to get
32:57to the 28-yard line.
33:02Bajan floats it.
33:03It's caught
33:04and it's past the sticks
33:05for the first down.
33:06Good awareness
33:07by Luther Burden III
33:09knowing exactly
33:10where the line
33:10to gain was.
33:12Caught it
33:12and lunged for it.
33:13Luther Burden
33:14is just so technical
33:15in his routes
33:16and he missed some time
33:17with a soft tissue injury,
33:18but he has started,
33:20as Jim alluded to earlier,
33:21come on of late
33:22and start to figure
33:24this thing out mentally,
33:25which is a really good sign
33:26because I had a good conversation
33:28with one Bears exec.
33:30They kind of see him
33:31as if Roman DJ had a baby,
33:34it's Luther Burden.
33:34A really nice combination
33:37of skill set.
33:41Right back to the running game
33:43and this time
33:43it's Travis Homer,
33:44special teams maven.
33:46Get some carries.
33:47Burden was the final pick
33:48acquired in that
33:50massive haul of a trade
33:51for the number one pick
33:52with Carolina.
33:53So you get DJ Moore,
33:55you get Darnell Wright
33:57out of it,
33:57you get Torrey Taylor,
33:59Tyreek Stevenson,
34:00eventually Caleb Williams,
34:01and now Luther Burden.
34:03So some credit
34:03to the front office
34:04for that trade.
34:05It seems like it's going
34:05to be a very important haul
34:07when it's all said and done.
34:09Burden right near the top
34:10of the draft charts
34:11for the Bears,
34:12the second round pick.
34:13One of the great receivers
34:14in Mizzou history.
34:18He's got the first down,
34:20part of that same draft class.
34:22This is how good our crew is.
34:24They hear us talk about
34:24two rookies
34:25and then we throw
34:26the draft class
34:26right up on your screen.
34:27It's a very solid haul
34:28this past draft.
34:30Yeah, it's going to be key.
34:32We'll see what Ozzy Trapillo,
34:33we're going to talk about
34:34the Boston College tackle.
34:36He's in the mix
34:36to be a starter
34:37at the left tackle spot.
34:39Already, you mentioned
34:40the running back.
34:41He has really impressed
34:42these coaches.
34:43And again,
34:44you have to think
34:44of his special teams value
34:46when you look at Monunga.
34:47He is making a case
34:48of making this team
34:49just with his special teams,
34:50but already the coach
34:52said that he trusts him
34:53in his ability
34:54to know the plays
34:55and know his assignments.
34:56Well, the fact that he
34:57turned what should have been
34:58a loss into a no-game play
34:59pretty impressive strength
35:01by Monunga in the backfield there.
35:02Well, right now, guys,
35:04he's really second
35:04on the depth chart
35:05behind DeAndre Swift.
35:07That's how good he's been.
35:08He's not necessarily
35:09the sexy pick
35:10in the seventh round,
35:11but he brings
35:12the consistency
35:13that you want.
35:14And he was a top three
35:15runner in the Big Ten.
35:16The Bears saw that as,
35:17hey, they can run defend
35:18in that conference.
35:19And he's got
35:20great contact balance.
35:22By the way,
35:22didn't fumble
35:23not once
35:24in his career
35:24in college.
35:26Back-to-back
35:26thousand-yard seasons
35:27at Rutgers.
35:28All Big Ten
35:29each of the last two years.
35:31He's in there
35:31to pass block.
35:32Bajan has time.
35:33Dumps it off
35:34underneath for Tyler Scott.
35:35He'll set up
35:36third down and two.
35:43Good pass protection,
35:44good delivery.
35:45Nice calm,
35:46nice feet in the pocket
35:47and just going
35:48through his reads,
35:48taking his patience.
35:49He knows he's well protected.
35:51And again,
35:52you see him going
35:53through the process.
35:54You can see him
35:55going through his reads
35:56to get to where
35:57the ball needs to go.
35:59There is structure
36:00to the offense
36:01and Tyson Bajan
36:02follows it to a tee.
36:04And on third down
36:04and two,
36:05he's under center
36:05for the handoff
36:07to Mononga
36:08with a patient run
36:09and a first down.
36:10It's first and goal.
36:12A flag leap
36:12is thrown
36:13on the near side
36:14of the field.
36:15This may be
36:15for a face mask,
36:17so it'll be
36:17kind of a negligible
36:19yard penalty
36:19about a yard here
36:20added.
36:21Personal foul.
36:22Face mask
36:23on the defense
36:23number 22.
36:24Half the distance
36:25to the goal
36:26and an automatic
36:27first down.
36:28Some of that balance
36:29and strength
36:29that you're talking about
36:30as you see Elijah Campbell
36:32down to the deck.
36:33He committed the penalty
36:33and there's the injury
36:35to the insult.
36:37It'll be first down
36:37and goal
36:38on the other side.
36:39Go Bears dot com slash tickets.
36:56Replay assist is taking
36:58a bigger hold
36:59on reviews this year.
37:00They actually took
37:01the face mask penalty
37:02off in an expedited review.
37:04It was a negligible yard
37:05anyway.
37:06It'll be first and goal
37:06at the two
37:07for Bajan
37:08and the Bears
37:09on a good drive
37:10after two empty ones.
37:11Yeah, one of the things
37:12Ben loves about Bajan,
37:13he never makes
37:14the same mistake twice
37:15and he always goes
37:16through his progressions.
37:18We'll explain a little bit later.
37:21He's got Smythe in motion.
37:24Monongai's the back.
37:26Now sending Burden across.
37:31Bajan commanding
37:32where Burden should be.
37:33Handing off for Monongai.
37:35Collision.
37:36Stretch.
37:37Flag.
37:38No touchdown.
37:40It is going to be
37:41a procedure penalty
37:42on the Bears.
37:43He saw the movement beforehand
37:44trying to get lined up properly.
37:46The formation on the offense
37:48number 81 was covered up.
37:50That's a five-yard penalty
37:51for Stout.
37:52So, need to be
37:53off the line.
37:54There can only be
37:55seven players
37:56essentially on the line
37:57of scrimmage
37:58and that was one extra
37:59on the line of scrimmage
38:00for the Bears.
38:02Yeah, that's
38:03for the quarterback
38:04you've got to be aware
38:04of that too.
38:05Line up who's on,
38:06who's off.
38:07You know, you've got to be
38:08able to direct it all.
38:09And that's where Ben Johnson
38:10talked about.
38:10The details.
38:12They can't be sloppy
38:13like that.
38:13Coach referred to it
38:14as sloppy.
38:15These are things
38:16that you have to clean up
38:17within the offense
38:18as, hey, here you're
38:19on the two-yard line.
38:20Now you're snapping
38:21from the seven.
38:24Roll out.
38:25Bajin flips it.
38:27It's caught.
38:28It is Steven Carlson.
38:30And it'll go back
38:30near the original line
38:31of scrimmage.
38:32It will be
38:33second down and goal.
38:34I want to go back
38:35to something Stacy
38:36was talking about
38:36about Bajin kind of working
38:38through progressions.
38:41Yeah, just a really nice
38:42rollout by Bajin here.
38:44Two tight ends on the field
38:45at this point.
38:46But you watch Bajin in practice.
38:48Let's say it's a pure
38:49progression offense.
38:50He's got four different reads,
38:51five reads.
38:51He makes the second read,
38:53throws the ball.
38:53He's going through on air,
38:55Jim.
38:55That third, fourth,
38:57and even fifth read.
38:58That's how attuned he is
39:00to the details.
39:03Play action fake to Monongai.
39:05Bajin running out of time.
39:07And he gets sacked
39:07from the backside
39:08by Derek McClendon.
39:12Brought down in pursuit.
39:13McClendon is able
39:14to make the play.
39:16And it'll be
39:17third down and goal.
39:19Trying to step up
39:20in the pocket again.
39:21He's been patient.
39:21Ben Johnson wants
39:23the quarterbacks
39:24to play from the midline.
39:26Play from when in there.
39:27From in there,
39:28much like Jared Goff.
39:29Had to step up twice now.
39:31Has taken two sacks.
39:32Trying to find a lane
39:34to potentially run.
39:35But hey,
39:36you live to play
39:37another down.
39:37He didn't turn over
39:38the football.
39:39Come away with points
39:40on this drive.
39:41They've converted twice
39:42on third down
39:43on this drive.
39:44Screen pass in space.
39:47And Maurice Alexander
39:48is not going to get there.
39:51Alexander,
39:52the first year pro
39:53out of Florida
39:54International University.
39:56Again,
39:56if this is the regular season
39:58in the first half,
39:59there is certainly
40:00a lean towards
40:02kicking the field goal.
40:03In preseason,
40:04you're probably going to
40:05go for these plays more.
40:06And then the question is,
40:07when is Ben Johnson
40:09going to go for these
40:09types of plays
40:10in the regular season?
40:11Because we know
40:12how Dan Campbell
40:13and Ben were in Detroit
40:14being aggressive.
40:15Yeah,
40:15the Bears want to win
40:16much like the Lions.
40:17Hey,
40:17you want to create
40:18a winning culture.
40:19And Dan Campbell
40:20went for it on fourth down
40:21more than anybody
40:22because he trusts his team
40:23and they needed to win.
40:25They need to feel
40:26what winning is like.
40:27And I think Ben's
40:27going to be very aggressive
40:28year one as a head coach.
40:30Nice throw
40:30for Alexander.
40:32Did he get his feet down?
40:33He did.
40:34Touchdown,
40:34Chicago.
40:35What a touch throw.
40:46Cool and calm
40:48Tyson Bajan.
40:49Impressive and athletic.
40:51Maurice Alexander.
40:52It's really what Stacey
40:53talked about.
40:54He's working through his reach.
40:55He's looking to the front pylon
40:57and says,
40:58no,
40:58I'm going to two.
40:59Let me put it up high
41:00by the ESPN cameras
41:01and give my guy a chance.
41:04This is what he does.
41:05That's why they can't stump him
41:07in the quarterback room.
41:08All those quarterbacks
41:09challenge him.
41:10This guy has answers
41:12as a quarterback.
41:13Tyro Santos.
41:17Always reliable.
41:19Pumps that one through.
41:21Nice play by Maurice Alexander
41:23from Tyson Bajan.
41:24An athletic play.
41:27The former high school
41:28quarterback in Miami.
41:29Alexander,
41:30a touchdown against the Dolphins.
41:37Bears preseason football
