00:02:36Everard defensive coordinator yesterday he mentioned about his athletic traits and he
00:02:40made plays constantly in camp and that's what he did he ran right through the
00:02:43running back was able to force Mason Rudolph out to his left and to be able to get rid of the
00:02:48football and he showed up on special teams and that's where some of these final roster spots
00:02:52are going to come from you've got to be able to play special teams if you're a backup
00:02:59promotion man Scottie Miller he's got some time with the Bucs
00:03:03checked out underneath it's the running back Warren lost the football
00:03:07Wilson able to cover it up at the 25 it sets up a third down for Pittsburgh
00:03:12Steve that's one thing the Panthers want to see more of this year
00:03:16forced fumbles getting more takeaways from the defense
00:03:19yeah see you want to see from this defense that they can create havoc plays and that throws off
00:03:25the timing and disrupt the defense uh the offense and that's what this team is lacking
00:03:31and so this is great opportunity for these young guys even though they aren't starters
00:03:35that they can have their opportunity to show they can impact and cause some havoc
00:03:39looked like Chris Barnes got in there to knock that ball away third down
00:03:43four to go from the 25 Rudolph over the middle incomplete line of contact
00:03:49and they're going to get Ransom for a penalty trying to cover

00:04:10because he's a he's a guy that he he's he's a draft pick

00:04:23and Ransom has to show that he can cover we know he can dump you but can you cover and show so
00:04:29show some another level to your capability of impacting this defense

00:04:40and here comes Latham oh look at oh taking on the running back and taking on the lead blocker
00:04:50hitting him and then making the tackle that's what you wanted to see that's what you want to see
00:04:55right that's 76 tackles he laid the wood on some people so we want to see

00:05:08on second and five back to the ground gainwell changing directions good hole gets past richardson
00:05:15ransom bumps him out there is another flag back at the 46 yard line two flags on the play and this
00:05:23is coming back yeah it looked like claude and chairless was held pretty good as they were trying to bounce

00:06:36probably had some of his greatest success he feels very comfortable there and lined up in empty we played
00:06:40soft zone coverage and he was able to find his receiver right on the other side of the linebacker

00:12:10up front but tonight we so far we're winning the line of scrimmage battle we're getting some push
00:12:14and you see an etn runner you see in blackshear run we're getting screens it's a nice opening drive
00:12:20and it's against the starters for the pittsburgh steelers so that's a really good test to say hey
00:12:26this young man can do this in open on opening day underneath round four slips a tackle flag down
00:12:33about a half yard shy of the line to gain payton wilson former linebacker at nc state making the tackle

00:14:44loses feet great job of hunter getting up the field protecting the football understanding that this is
00:14:51a swarming defense makes it a heck of a play yeah you'd like to see plumber stick it on him he read the
00:14:56blitz coming off of his face and got it out there but you want to get an accurate pass let your receiver
00:15:00go north and south immediately renfro in the slot on second and eight plumber pumps back pedals
00:15:08looking down field finds renfro on the comeback and he's to the 25 yard line ramsey pushed him out

00:15:30nice job by renfro i know it was only a gain of about five but it puts you in a third and manageable

00:15:39let's try to get a first down and you give your guy an opportunity to make yourself available because
00:15:46you see he's scrambling trying to look for help and and you now become that outlet

00:23:26natural hesitation which is check down that's where you got to be able to graduate and take it from the
00:23:33classroom to the to the actual game sam martin acquired in the offseason to replace johnny hecker

00:24:40signed last october off of the pittsburgh practice squad that is correct he's uh i believe he's from new
00:24:49orleans if i'm not mistaken and uh
00:24:52i'm excited for him he's gonna get an opportunity to play some linebacker a little bit later in the game
00:24:56but his special teams play and who's gonna make the roster tonight this is what it's all about
00:25:01he's getting excited and keep up this energy there's a toss to caleb johnson rookie out of
00:25:09iowa tripped up at the 30 yard line by sam roberts you see 31 and wide cory thornton he's been one of the
00:25:16standouts in camp he's gonna play some nickel tonight panthers looking for depth behind shaw smith wade
00:25:23the panthers are looking for depth in the secondary because they know to have a lot of young talent we know
00:25:28what the starters can do but you fill your roster with some of these guys and cory thornton has really
00:25:33shown what can he do and he's playing nickel right now good call in each coming this shot
00:25:43you're on the ball here on third down first down run that's caleb johnson again a big ask for johnson
00:25:51the expectation when he was drafted in the third round he would step in for naji harris as pittsburgh's
00:25:57lead back yeah latham ransom was able he was he got washed down unfortunately and he was able to
00:26:04bounce it outside and get a first down well we have come to the end of the first quarter carolina

00:26:39the first two preseason games we saw that big 28 yard run by trevor etn in the first quarter
00:26:44yeah really nice run cut back door was able to get out the back side nice job by the receivers blocking
00:26:49down field which that's how you get the big runs the second level blocks and the receiver hunter
00:26:54renfro did a very nice job as my gosh what a beautiful sunset gorgeous sunset diminishing

00:27:08by the rookie lathan ransom pinballs off a stealer and finally gang tackled inside the 45 of pittsburgh
00:27:19excellent interception the sideline sidelines excited yeah
00:27:24so yeah he's never been here before he's done that before
00:27:33nason russo rudolph just doesn't see him falling off he was trying to get the deep over
00:27:37and he laid it up that's probably gonna be one of the easier interceptions that latham will have in
00:27:42his career that is not true he's oh my gosh he's a db it's a challenge it's not a it's not a given
00:27:50why are you so hard on dbs because they're failed wide receivers
00:27:56were you ever a db yes i failed to can tackle consistently so i went to wide receiver all right
00:28:03i'm not speaking out of criticism i'm also a client

00:28:33uh it's where i grew up in uh in hawaii a little uh city of wamanalo i kind of made it my own thing
00:28:39just you know just remember my roots and then i also made an acronym negative attitudes lose
00:28:45opportunities nice which one do your teammates call you the most oh they call me teammate yeah this
00:28:50obviously is your first preseason in the nfl where do you feel like you've grown the most
00:28:55through training camp in the preseason so far uh obviously just getting uh adjusted to the speed
00:29:00uh the physicality uh everybody in the in at this level is fast everybody's good so uh just adapting
00:29:06to that you know you got um less room for error you know the skill gap is a lot smaller than college
00:29:11so just getting used to that for sure you also have the privilege of going up against jc horn and
00:29:15mike jackson every day at practice what's it like going up against those two oh man it's a blessing
00:29:21you know i'm fortunate enough to not only be in a a good offense with a good receiver room but
00:29:27go against some top tier guys every day in practice so uh being able to you know iron sharpen iron you
00:29:32know being able to um you know get thrown everything at me you know before the season comes so uh i'm not
00:29:38i'm not hit hit by it by the side this off season you spent a lot of time with bryce young out in
00:29:43california just kind of getting to know him throwing him throwing with him what was that like and that
00:29:49experience of bonding with him this summer i mean yeah we both cali dudes so we got a lot of
00:29:53similarities um and you know it's convenient you know we we both train at the same spot so um you
00:29:59know it's a win-win for us you know we train the off season then we come back during the season to
00:30:04train together so um like i said it's it's night and day before the chemistry for sure thanks so much
00:30:09and anish he's rocking the bucket hat too
00:30:13i gotta love the bucket hat plumber this time throws it away jake the pass to tj
00:30:19luther we saw a moment ago plumber shows some uh really nice escapability yeah he did pocket
00:30:24collapsed with four guys and he was able to step up and get out to his left a nice job by luther to
00:30:28come back to get the first down but to go back to second down we had a negative play on first down
00:30:33and then we threw a swing pass to get just some positive yardage on second down luther made a
00:30:38critical block yes he did a critical critical block to be able blackshear to be able to get us in third
00:30:44and ten instead of being third and long uh third and 15 plus so little things like that start to show
00:30:49up a play like that is showing that this young man has been waiting for his opportunity sitting on the
00:30:54sideline and he said hey coach i've been paying attention blackshear spins away and cyclones to the 25

00:34:20as myself he was in the nfl when he and i were both scratch scratching and clawing to try to stay in

00:35:45if it's not wide open if it's not there you've got to sail it so where do you see jack where do you see
00:35:52what is happening with jack plumber right now i think the biggest thing what i'm seeing and i saw
00:35:58it a little bit last week you know watching him put his hands on his head you're so frustrated you
00:36:03want to be perfect instead of just playing and that's normal i've been that way in my career
00:36:08you just you want to be so perfect in that you feel like everything is just so critical instead
00:36:14of just being loose and free and you just saw his reaction yes that's a tough deal because he's a guy
00:36:19who's invested so much in this team this team is invested in him and he knows he's fighting for a spot
00:36:24one of the one of the interesting things are talking these coaches in the coaches room and they said
00:36:29the thing we want to see out of these young players is we put so much on our on their plate we made them
00:36:35get a little bit of stress and with this stress we want to see can they play
00:36:41and not allow the stress to get to them but also allow their athleticism to take over

00:37:08something that young kids when they're coming out of college or they're young in the league

00:43:48things this is what we do and one thing about david moore he can be a gunner on special teams he can
00:43:53return putts he can return kicks he can play multiple positions he'll go down and tackle he will do
00:43:58whatever it takes to continue to keep having a job empty set here on second and ten after a run of no game
00:44:06by blackshear high throw went up it would not come down and hit the ball a little slow getting up but

00:53:52make good decisions and i'm not going to give you an out by running the football renfro in the slot to

00:54:11usually that means it's a zone he shifted formation and changing up the protection there's the blitz

00:54:26it's a great job and blackshare comes up limping because he also was protecting they run a kind of a
00:54:34what we used to call that it was a corner but they they came as a corner they came late they brought all
00:54:39three linebackers they shifted late but the early indicator showed like it was going to be zoned but then
00:54:44they decided to bring the house and the miscommunication and they let washington go free
00:54:49stood in there and so what i really love is washington runs a corner route but then
00:54:55hunter info runs at china so they run out but pull the corner explain china a china route is when you
00:55:01run a quick out but then he stops and comes back in so that makes the corner have to chase which opens up
00:55:08the back end that allows the touchdown and that's why that's one of the hardest catch in football is the
00:55:14catch it in the end zone when it's just you and the ball to make sure you can catch all you got to do
00:55:19is the touchdown if you catch it ryan fitzgerald for the bat the rookie out of florida state

00:57:40And it's interesting, it's flat-footed, understanding.

00:59:01Starters haven't played, so you try not to make too much of the stats.
00:59:04But, Jake, what stood out to you in that opening half?
00:59:09I think the big thing is that I saw some young guys compete.
00:59:12Pittsburgh played their starters on defense.
00:59:13We saw Jalen Ramsey.
00:59:14We saw him blitz a few times.
00:59:16I like the way our running backs ran.
00:59:17I think Blackshear had 11 carries, hit the hole hard.
00:59:2018 had the big run bouncing out the back door.
00:59:22I'd love to see some of that.
00:59:24That's what you wanted to see.
00:59:25I think Latham Ransom, he kind of showed up a little bit.
00:59:28He obviously had the pick, but you saw him fill in the run game from the safety position.
00:59:31And that's kind of what we wanted to see.
00:59:33You talked about this defense last year for the Carolina Panthers in pretty much every category.
00:59:37They were in the bottom half and 29th or last.
00:59:40So you want to see some havoc plays.
00:59:42And then with those havoc plays and impact plays, give the offense more opportunities.
00:59:47And with that offense getting more opportunities, Jack Plummer has an opportunity to reinvent himself,
00:59:55to leave a lasting impression on these coaches.
