00:00:00coaches but one of the things that we need to talk about as my quarterback is here
00:00:04Hunter Renro you hung him out two times now you gotta say something my bad at least I would think
00:00:12he probably said my bad there's a couple of times the ball was thrown maybe a little high
00:00:16I know exactly the kind of eyes I've seen those eyes not many times not many times I've seen
00:00:22those eyes and I would I would just not look at him like I'm doing right this is about to turn
00:00:26into a therapy session get back in the huddle I'm gonna throw you the ball and then once you
00:00:29throw him one more time then you forget about it is that the lie you're going with might as well
00:00:34let's let's go to first half stats now brought to you by Bank of America it's a lot of old
00:00:41skeletons to unearth Panthers with 102 rushing yards four for eight on third downs again that
00:00:47was a problem in the first two preseason games if you're just looking at the numbers it was a
00:00:52problem but 50% that's that's a huge plus for us now who are we gonna see the second half are we
00:00:58gonna get Bryce in the second half how does he operate in the second half so I'm just happy I
00:01:03think Jack Plummer he throws the pick right Pittsburgh goes down the score he was able to
00:01:06answer we were able to answer on a two-minute drive in essence score late in the half that was huge that
00:01:12was nice getting the touchdown pass and when you say Bryce in the second half we're talking about
00:01:16a different Bryce Bryce Perkins recently signed to be the fourth quarterback no Bryce Young no Andy Dalton
00:01:24tonight so Jack Plummer got the first half the plan is for Bryce Perkins former Virginia star former UFL MVP
00:01:32with the Michigan Panthers he's expected to get the second half and Steve I go back to what Dave Canales
00:01:38told us a lot of the principles of this offense came from Seattle and Shane Waldron who was the
00:01:46offensive coordinator when Dave Canales was an assistant Shane Waldron was with the Rams Bryce Perkins was with
00:01:53the Rams so there is some familiarity and Shane Waldron is also quality control guy back in the day with the
00:02:00Houston Texas under Gary Kubiak who the wide receivers coach was Kyle Shanahan and the assistant wide receiver coach
00:02:06coach was Mike McDaniels so this family tree and understanding that fundamentally it's all the same they may
00:02:13rename the slant or or come back but they may call it a blaze or something to switch it up so what's this says
00:02:22is if if Bryce comes in and really shows that just on a limited time that he has the ability to understand the
00:02:32offense and execute that can be problematic for this guy for this young man making this roster
00:02:40Jimmy Horn on the return you know you were going six degrees I was wondering if you were going to get to Kevin Bacon
00:02:46you never played that game
00:02:49not no okay I was clueless what are you talking about
00:02:54six degrees of Kevin Bacon all right Bryce Perkins making his debut I think this is insane he signed on when Sunday Monday
00:03:04Tuesday pretty good reminds me of Vinny Testaverde right 2007 when I went down
00:03:10first down Bryce Perkins hands it off to Imani Bailey who is tackled behind the line of scrimmage for a loss
00:03:27the third quarter is underway and joining us in the booth is Panthers general manager Dan Morgan we've gotten a chance
00:03:35down to see a lot of the young guys tonight a lot of the rookies and you said after the draft you didn't think there was
00:03:41any way in all the mock drafts that you did that your first three picks would have been available when you were on the
00:03:47board yeah I mean you know we I think strategically I think we did a really good job along with our analytics department
00:03:56and just kind of knowing who was going to be there at one time and projecting that Eric eager who's our head of analytics
00:04:03he does a great job so yeah it was it was one of those things where we took team back in the first round we were super excited about that and then you come back and you draft Nick
00:04:14scored and and Prince Lee so two really good addressers that we're excited about so couldn't have worked out any better
00:04:23Dan I have a question for you so being a linebacker first round pick how is it when you're watching these linebackers
00:04:32or when you're grading linebackers what what's the process that you that you go through because this game is a little bit different I think when you came out it's a lot more spread out what's the whole process how do you kind of get your mind around okay I didn't play in this type of game the way it is nowadays yeah you know I think first of all you got to be you got to be really smart you know you got to be smart you got to have the instincts I think the instincts definitely pop
00:04:56and that you got to live out on top of all the tape and are going to have to drive out on the tape and then you know you have to be Nebraska and athleticism for playing this league right now so you know we look for those type of guys those type of trades you know height length speed athleticism and you know you just watch the tape and then you get to
00:05:15and then you get to know the guy, and then you make a decision.
00:05:19Nice run there by Imani Bailey.
00:05:20Go ahead, Steve.
00:05:21When watching the tape, you get to learn that guy,
00:05:23but are there some preconceived notions about these players
00:05:27as you go through your interview process
00:05:29to decide if a guy fits the criteria
00:05:32outside of his physical attributes
00:05:36now that gives you an opportunity to learn about mentally
00:05:40what he is or isn't capable of?
00:05:42Yeah, absolutely.
00:05:43You know, I think that has to do,
00:05:46you've got to spend a lot of time with these guys.
00:05:48You've got to get to know these guys not only as players,
00:05:50but you've got to get to know them as people.
00:05:53What makes them tick?
00:05:55What motivates them?
00:05:57How passionate are they about football?
00:06:00How passionate are they about their teammates and winning?
00:06:03So it's a lot of work that goes into it.
00:06:06That comes from the area scouts, right?
00:06:07Yeah, correct.
00:06:08Correct.
00:06:09So we have area scouts that go out,
00:06:11they scout, get all the background.
00:06:14And then we actually have Brian Decker,
00:06:16who all he does is go out and get information
00:06:19about the players, their background,
00:06:23and just all the little things that I wouldn't get at a school.
00:06:27So, yeah, we dig on these guys.
00:06:30We do a lot, a lot of work.
00:06:32We get to know them.
00:06:33And then, you know, by the end,
00:06:35by the end of the draft process,
00:06:36you know, we're ready to roll.
00:06:38So when you have a young,
00:06:40when you have a young player
00:06:41who, like on this roster,
00:06:43or someone you were thinking about pulling the trigger on,
00:06:48but for whatever reason,
00:06:50someone else, like you said,
00:06:51was available based on statistics and data,
00:06:55and all of a sudden,
00:06:56that player now becomes available.
00:06:58I've heard coaches say this,
00:06:59and I've always been a little bit intrigued
00:07:02when those players,
00:07:05when the players,
00:07:06when the coaches say,
00:07:07I always loved him out of college.
00:07:09Right.
00:07:10But then he's been in the league
00:07:12or bounced around for the last four years.
00:07:14Why are you still evaluating the kids,
00:07:17your love out of college four years ago
00:07:19when he showed you
00:07:20the deficiencies that you thought he may have
00:07:23are actually carrying on
00:07:25right before our eyes on the field?
00:07:28Yeah, I mean, you know,
00:07:29I think guys do develop.
00:07:31You know, so you've got to watch guys
00:07:32and you, you know,
00:07:33you've always got to have an open mind
00:07:34and, you know, guys do change.
00:07:37But at the same time,
00:07:39you can't fool yourself
00:07:40and think that if they're with another team,
00:07:42that all of a sudden they're going to change
00:07:44and, you know, be different with your team
00:07:46just because of your culture,
00:07:48your locker room.
00:07:49So, what's going on out there?
00:07:52A busted play.
00:07:53Steelers are saying the ball came out.
00:07:55The ball came out.
00:07:55The ball came out twice.
00:07:56But I think I didn't.
00:07:58Did I answer your question?
00:07:58It was great.
00:07:59Yeah.
00:08:00So, last year,
00:08:01we had the number one priority
00:08:03in the claims.
00:08:04Yep.
00:08:04So, I'm assuming you looked at the roster.
00:08:08It is going to be
00:08:10Pittsburgh football here.
00:08:13So, when you're constructing this roster,
00:08:17you know, you're sitting here last year
00:08:18knowing, hey,
00:08:18we have first dibs on claiming guys.
00:08:21A little bit different this year.
00:08:23How much is that going to affect on
00:08:24when it comes down to the final 53?
00:08:27Is that okay?
00:08:27We know we might like a few guys
00:08:29that might be let go,
00:08:30but somebody else will claim.
00:08:32Is that going to be a big difference this year?
00:08:34Yeah, I think last year
00:08:35compared to this year,
00:08:37you know, last year,
00:08:38like, we were looking for, like,
00:08:39starters at the waiver wire
00:08:41and, like, depth guys
00:08:42that were going to play an important role.
00:08:44This year, we don't feel so much that way.
00:08:46We feel good about our roster
00:08:48and, you know, we feel good about,
00:08:50you know, we just feel good about
00:08:51the roster as a whole
00:08:53that we're starting to gain some depth.
00:08:55We're starting to, you know,
00:08:57get the kind of players
00:08:58that we want to get here.
00:09:00But, to your point,
00:09:01you know, if we want to,
00:09:03since we're eighth in the order,
00:09:05you know, if we need to,
00:09:06we can, you know,
00:09:08swap late ground picks
00:09:09if we really like a guy,
00:09:11you know, just to kind of get ahead of it.
00:09:12So, there's ways to kind of get ahead of it.
00:09:14We're always looking into things.
00:09:16We're always going to be creative
00:09:18and try to do things
00:09:20to make this roster a better roster.
00:09:23So, you're telling me
00:09:24there's even negotiations
00:09:25on swapping waiver wire bases.
00:09:29So, we have claim order.
00:09:31So, I can slide you
00:09:33my seventh round pick at 176.
00:09:37Yep.
00:09:38And the other person is,
00:09:40well, you got, I'm at 180.
00:09:43So, that seems very attractive.
00:09:45So, that gives you an opportunity
00:09:47where, you know,
00:09:49I'll gladly give you a hamburger today,
00:09:51but I'll pay you on Tuesday.
00:09:52Yeah, and you can do that
00:09:54and you can also,
00:09:55hey, if there's a guy on our roster
00:09:57that they like
00:09:58and we have a need
00:09:59and they have a need
00:10:00and it kind of matches up,
00:10:02then you can always do
00:10:03player swaps as well.
00:10:04So, there's a lot of ways
00:10:06to get creative
00:10:06and we're always going to do that.
00:10:08So, you have told Tuesday
00:10:10to figure out
00:10:11what the 53-man roster looks like.
00:10:14Where do you envision
00:10:15the hardest decisions
00:10:16between now and Tuesday?
00:10:18Yeah, I think, obviously,
00:10:20you know,
00:10:20wide out is a deep position for us.
00:10:22So, we've got to figure out there
00:10:23how many numbers
00:10:24we're going to keep there.
00:10:25Is there a sweet spot?
00:10:27You know, I think,
00:10:28you know,
00:10:28you usually keep around,
00:10:30you know, six guys,
00:10:31sometimes five guys.
00:10:32You know,
00:10:33we have a lot of guys
00:10:33that we like.
00:10:34So, there is the potential
00:10:35that we keep seven.
00:10:38You know,
00:10:39looking around our roster too,
00:10:41you know,
00:10:42we're still, I think,
00:10:43trying to figure out
00:10:43the inside linebacker spot.
00:10:45We're trying to figure out,
00:10:46you know,
00:10:47hey, who's looking good
00:10:48in this game?
00:10:50Is anybody going to show us
00:10:51something that we don't
00:10:52already know?
00:10:53So, these games are really
00:10:54valuable to see
00:10:55some of these guys play.
00:10:57And, yeah,
00:10:58we just got to,
00:10:59we just got to,
00:11:00we got our work cut out for us.
00:11:01Let's put it that way.
00:11:02Hey, Dan,
00:11:03you had the opportunity,
00:11:04look here,
00:11:05Rico here,
00:11:06and then you have two,
00:11:06but tell me,
00:11:07what was,
00:11:08what was you guys playing
00:11:09when you had that opportunity
00:11:11to formulate that
00:11:14as a possibility?
00:11:15Yeah,
00:11:15I think,
00:11:16you know,
00:11:16it's a long season,
00:11:17so you need two running backs,
00:11:19especially,
00:11:20you need three running backs,
00:11:22actually,
00:11:22but you need two running backs,
00:11:23especially like,
00:11:24Chuba and Rico,
00:11:26you know,
00:11:26two big physical runners.
00:11:28We want to be a physical offense,
00:11:31you know,
00:11:31run downhill,
00:11:33you know,
00:11:33kind of smash you in the face
00:11:34a little bit.
00:11:35Our offensive line's physical,
00:11:37so we love having those guys be,
00:11:38you know,
00:11:39behind that offensive line.
00:11:41And then,
00:11:42you know,
00:11:43Trevor ETN,
00:11:44drafting him,
00:11:44he's a really good change of pace
00:11:46back for us.
00:11:47He catches the ball extremely well
00:11:49out of the backfield.
00:11:50He's different than Chuba,
00:11:51he's different than Rico,
00:11:53but I think it's a really good,
00:11:55you know,
00:11:57three guys that we have right there.
00:11:59All-star,
00:12:00offense,
00:12:01number 60,
00:12:02five-yard penalty,
00:12:04still third down.
00:12:05Of all the joint practices,
00:12:07how valuable do you consider
00:12:11these joint practices nowadays,
00:12:13now that we have?
00:12:14You know what?
00:12:15I kind of wish we did it back when we played.
00:12:17I think it's really valuable.
00:12:19The guys get a lot of work in.
00:12:22You know,
00:12:22it helps with the conditioning.
00:12:24It kind of gives us a look at our roster
00:12:26compared to another roster.
00:12:28You know,
00:12:29we were down there in Houston
00:12:30against the really good Houston team.
00:12:33We did some really good things down there.
00:12:34We felt good about that,
00:12:35that week that we were down there.
00:12:38But yeah,
00:12:39I think it's great for the guys.
00:12:40You know,
00:12:41they go against each other every day
00:12:42and it can become anonymous
00:12:44every single day.
00:12:45They're just kind of going against each other,
00:12:48going against your teammate that you know.
00:12:51You know how they play.
00:12:52You know the calls.
00:12:53Yeah,
00:12:53you know everything.
00:12:54You know how the guy's going to block you.
00:12:57So, you know,
00:12:57to go and play against another team,
00:13:00different players,
00:13:01different schemes,
00:13:03I think it's invaluable.
00:13:05So now,
00:13:06last preseason game, right?
00:13:07Tonight.
00:13:08So we won't play again for, what,
00:13:0917 days?
00:13:10Yeah.
00:13:11So,
00:13:12how difficult is it?
00:13:14Because really and truly,
00:13:15the team's not ready yet.
00:13:18No team's ready to play their first preseason game.
00:13:23So like,
00:13:24how difficult is it to prepare a team?
00:13:26Okay,
00:13:27hey guys,
00:13:28I know we're not in camp,
00:13:28but this is still camp mode.
00:13:30We're still grinding,
00:13:30we're still pushing.
00:13:31Yeah,
00:13:32I think our players understand that.
00:13:34And,
00:13:34you know,
00:13:34I think this,
00:13:36you know,
00:13:36this training camp,
00:13:37Coach Canales,
00:13:38he's pushed these guys extremely hard.
00:13:40I think they're in really good shape right now.
00:13:43I think we're,
00:13:44I think we're trending in a really good direction
00:13:46to be ready to go to Jacksonville,
00:13:48which is going to be really hot in week one.
00:13:50So,
00:13:51I think that's the biggest thing,
00:13:52is keep your conditioning up,
00:13:54work on your body,
00:13:56get your legs back.
00:13:58You know,
00:13:58it's been a long camp.
00:13:59So,
00:14:00you know,
00:14:00I think,
00:14:00yeah.
00:14:01Pittsburgh pushed back on the holding penalty here.
00:14:07We just saw a shot of Bryce Young.
00:14:09Dan,
00:14:10year three,
00:14:11it's a big year for Bryce Young.
00:14:12You guys have the decision after the year for his fifth year option,
00:14:16but just for the future of the franchise,
00:14:19what has growth looked like for Bryce Young from the end of last season till now?
00:14:23Yeah,
00:14:23I think he's just maturing,
00:14:25you know,
00:14:25not only as a,
00:14:27as a man,
00:14:27but he's also maturing out on the football field as,
00:14:30as a leader,
00:14:31the command of the huddle,
00:14:33just all the little details that you need to be a great quarterback.
00:14:37And every day,
00:14:38you just see him making steps and the way he communicates with his teammates and,
00:14:43you know,
00:14:44loves his teammates and,
00:14:46you know,
00:14:46he's just always looking for ways to get better.
00:14:49I think we got a good one.
00:14:52Speaking of a couple of the players that we haven't seen yet.
00:14:55So,
00:14:55Tommy Trimble,
00:14:55we feel pretty good about going into week one.
00:14:58I guess he was just activated.
00:15:00So I think we're starting to feel pretty good about it.
00:15:01Yeah,
00:15:01we just,
00:15:02we just took him off PUP.
00:15:05Tommy's moving around really well.
00:15:06He looks really good out there on the practice field,
00:15:09running routes,
00:15:10hitting sleds,
00:15:12checking all the boxes that we need to feel comfortable with him to go out and,
00:15:16and be ready for week one.
00:15:17And so I'd say it's trending in a really good direction.
00:15:21Talking about week one,
00:15:21going down to Jacksonville,
00:15:23you talk about the humidity.
00:15:24Talk about what do you guys expect to see out of a Travis Hunter,
00:15:32who's now playing two different,
00:15:35who's playing offensive defense,
00:15:37general manager.
00:15:38How does that play in a role for you guys preparation going into the game?
00:15:42You know,
00:15:42I think that's really going to be up to the coaching staff,
00:15:45how we,
00:15:45you know,
00:15:46decide to play that.
00:15:47But they're a really talented football team,
00:15:49really talented receivers,
00:15:52talented edge rushers.
00:15:54It's going to be a good battle week one.
00:15:56It's going to be a really good test for us,
00:15:58really good test for them.
00:15:59And I think our guys will be up for the,
00:16:01for the challenge.
00:16:03Isaac Gifford with a nice tackle to set up a third down and 18 here.
00:16:09Can the Panthers hold Pittsburgh to three Skylar Thompson to the air?
00:16:14Pocket collapsing.
00:16:16Finds the lane.
00:16:18Get him Trevion.
00:16:19There you go.
00:16:20Trevion Thomas closing in fast.
00:16:22There is a penalty marker.
00:16:23So there's going to be a hold on the offensive line.
00:16:26And it's going to be a hold on Thomas.
00:16:27They held Thomas in Coombe.
00:16:29Talk about his play.
00:16:30He's a guy who we've called his name a lot.
00:16:32He's flashed all camp,
00:16:33but not only defensively rushing the passer on specialty.
00:16:36Yeah.
00:16:37I mean,
00:16:38super explosive off the edge,
00:16:40super really high motor,
00:16:42a guy that's like constantly chasing the ball.
00:16:46And again,
00:16:46like you said,
00:16:47he's a really good special team.
00:16:49He's one of our best,
00:16:50but special teams guys,
00:16:51you know,
00:16:52he's four fight for phase guy that can,
00:16:55that can do everything.
00:16:55And the opposing teams are going to have to,
00:16:58you know,
00:16:58pay attention to him.
00:16:59I ask this because you,
00:17:04a lot of times hear people complain about the preseason.
00:17:08Please explain to the viewers
00:17:10why in the fourth game,
00:17:13some of the starters don't dress
00:17:15and why some of the guys who backfilling your rosters
00:17:18or guys who haven't played much,
00:17:20why is this important,
00:17:21even though it's not as clean as you would want it to be?
00:17:25Yeah,
00:17:25I think,
00:17:26you know,
00:17:27first and foremost,
00:17:28you know,
00:17:28third preseason game.
00:17:30We're getting closer to week one.
00:17:33You know,
00:17:33the last thing you want is an injury,
00:17:35you know,
00:17:35going into week one.
00:17:37We want all our guys healthy,
00:17:38feeling good,
00:17:39get their legs back,
00:17:40you know,
00:17:42and then seeing some of these young guys,
00:17:44you know,
00:17:44let these young guys play.
00:17:46Let's see who we have.
00:17:47Let's see who stands out.
00:17:49Let's see who sets themselves apart
00:17:51and makes plays.
00:17:53So,
00:17:53you know,
00:17:54I think it's really good for these guys,
00:17:56first of all,
00:17:56to get tape for other teams
00:17:58if we do cut them,
00:17:59but also tape for us
00:18:01so we can make an evaluation.
00:18:04Field goal coming up here
00:18:05for Ben Sauls.
00:18:08He's hit from 38.
00:18:09This is from 42.
00:18:11Left-footed kicker.
00:18:15And that gives Pittsburgh a 13-10 lead.
00:18:20Dan Morgan's got a busy few days
00:18:23ahead of him to finalize this 53-man roster.
00:18:26He's banking on this
00:18:282025 draft class.
00:18:30You've seen some highlights tonight
00:18:31from guys like ETN and Ransom.
00:18:35Dan, thank you.
00:18:36Yeah, thanks for having me.
00:18:37Thanks a lot, buddy.
00:18:38Good luck.
00:18:38Thanks, folks.
00:18:38Appreciate it, Dano.

00:19:54There's one chicken sandwich.
00:19:55Man, y'all know my situation.
00:19:56I can't afford
00:19:57to be helping everybody right now.
00:20:00Hey, here's one thing,
00:20:03though, I want to say.
00:20:03I'm glad we went off camera.
00:20:04I'm calling.
00:20:04I'm glad we went off camera.
00:20:07Hey, my Uncle Tim,
00:20:08who's listening back in California,
00:20:09he told me he remembers
00:20:12his wife Joy
00:20:14remembers Jake
00:20:16when he ripped his pants
00:20:17when they were at the game.
00:20:19You remember that, Jake?
00:20:19I remember it very well.
00:20:21Yeah.
00:20:21Had that no but tall
00:20:22all over the screen, huh?
00:20:24Yeah, you know,
00:20:25we can go back to stories
00:20:26and you think about
00:20:27things that happen
00:20:28and we're playing Atlanta
00:20:30late in the season.
00:20:31I was wondering
00:20:32where you were going.
00:20:32One of the first snaps
00:20:33of the game
00:20:34and I get sacked
00:20:36and I think it's either
00:20:38Patrick Kearney
00:20:39keep brooking
00:20:40one of those buttons
00:20:41and I'm telling you,
00:20:42I feel something like
00:20:43my behinds burning
00:20:44a little bit.
00:20:45I'm like, man,
00:20:46I feel some air.
00:20:48Well, the referee,
00:20:49I can't remember his name,
00:20:50looks at me
00:20:51and he's laughing
00:20:52and I said,
00:20:53is my butt hanging out?
00:20:55And he just started laughing
00:20:56and I said,
00:20:57it is.
00:20:59And I said,
00:21:00time out.
00:21:00He goes,
00:21:00I can't keep him doing time out.
00:21:02So I call a time out.
00:21:03I go to the sidelines,
00:21:04first drive of the game.
00:21:05John Fox looks at me
00:21:07incredulous like,
00:21:07why'd you call a time out?
00:21:09And I said it,
00:21:10you know,
00:21:11you have to bleep the words out.
00:21:12Hey,
00:21:12this is hanging out.
00:21:13And he said,
00:21:14what?
00:21:14And I showed him
00:21:15and he starts laughing.
00:21:17So he's laughing at me.
00:21:18So here comes
00:21:19Jackie Miles
00:21:20and Donnie Toner,
00:21:21the equipment managers
00:21:21to the rescue.
00:21:23They put some towels around me.
00:21:24They take a towel,
00:21:25they wrap it,
00:21:25they tape it.
00:21:26We go right down the field.
00:21:27We're able to get a touchdown.
00:21:28I throw a touchdown
00:21:29past the Ricky Pro.
00:21:30So I will say
00:21:31that's one of the most
00:21:32I always wanted
00:21:33to go down
00:21:34in history
00:21:35with something.
00:21:36Well,
00:21:36I guess that was him,
00:21:37right?
00:21:39A behind came out,
00:21:40unfortunately.
00:21:41Still have those pants
00:21:41to this day,
00:21:42by the way.
00:21:43The sad part is,
00:21:44they were good luck.
00:21:46So one of the things
00:21:47Jake does not like to admit,
00:21:50so the whole jacket thing,
00:21:52I asked him to bring his jacket
00:21:54because it's an honor
00:21:55to be able to experience
00:21:57what I've been experienced
00:21:58with Jake.
00:21:59But then,
00:22:01where do you actually
00:22:02wear that jacket?
00:22:03Because anywhere you wear
00:22:04that jacket,
00:22:05it comes across
00:22:06as a prude a little bit,
00:22:08like,
00:22:09oh,
00:22:09you're that guy.
00:22:11So I tell Jake,
00:22:12hey,
00:22:13let's wear our jackets.
00:22:15He goes,
00:22:15are you messing with me?
00:22:17I said,
00:22:18no.
00:22:19You're right.
00:22:19I didn't believe you.
00:22:20I said,
00:22:20old Steve would be.
00:22:22Steve Vaughn is reflecting.
00:22:25Steve Vaughn is reflecting
00:22:26and saying that.
00:22:27I didn't know Steve Vaughn.
00:22:28I never knew him.
00:22:29Yeah.
00:22:30So,
00:22:31we go,
00:22:32but here's the thing.
00:22:34What did your better half say
00:22:37on why you brought two jackets?
00:22:39There's Jimmy Warren.
00:22:41First down.
00:22:42I'd like to see that.
00:22:43Bryce had a little bit of time.
00:22:44He's been under some pressure.
00:22:46We didn't get to talk much.
00:22:47We were interviewing Dan,
00:22:48talking to Dan,
00:22:49but he's been under some pressure.
00:22:50But that was nice.
00:22:51He was able to stand in the pocket,
00:22:52deliver a strike.
00:22:53Jimmy Horn,
00:22:54catch the ball,
00:22:54go upfield,
00:22:55young man.
00:22:56Very quick young man
00:22:57who we think
00:22:57has a lot of ability.
00:22:59No,
00:22:59I don't think he has ability.
00:23:01I was at his pro day,
00:23:02watched his film,
00:23:03he could play.
00:23:03What did the missus say?
00:23:05So,
00:23:05I said,
00:23:05hey,
00:23:06I need a pack.
00:23:06And Steve,
00:23:07and she goes,
00:23:08well,
00:23:08we're going to pack two jackets.
00:23:09He said,
00:23:09because I have a feeling
00:23:10Steve's messing with you.
00:23:11So,
00:23:12and why would I mess with her?
00:23:14Because she said,
00:23:16she said,
00:23:17what did she,
00:23:17what did Carrie say?
00:23:18Well,
00:23:19she said,
00:23:19you would do that to him.
00:23:20I would do that to him.
00:23:22I'm sorry.
00:23:22I'm sorry.
00:23:22I would.
00:23:24Let's check in with Carla Metz.
00:23:27That's right.
00:23:27I got a new face to Carolina
00:23:29at the safety position.
00:23:30Trayvon Merrick
00:23:31coming here from the Raiders.
00:23:33You spent all your time
00:23:34in the league with the Raiders,
00:23:35now new to Carolina.
00:23:36You said it's a little slower here,
00:23:38but you like it, right?
00:23:39Yeah,
00:23:39no,
00:23:39it's good.
00:23:40It's easy transition
00:23:41coming out here,
00:23:42you know,
00:23:42especially getting with the guys
00:23:43and the coaches we have.
00:23:44So,
00:23:44it's been smooth.
00:23:45I've been enjoying it.
00:23:46Take us through a little bit
00:23:47of what a starter does
00:23:48during a preseason game
00:23:49like this, right?
00:23:50You haven't played a snap.
00:23:51You're watching all these guys.
00:23:52What's been your responsibility
00:23:53tonight?
00:23:54Man,
00:23:54just giving them juice,
00:23:56just giving them energy,
00:23:57you know,
00:23:57trying to believe that confidence
00:23:58in them.
00:23:59And then it's just been,
00:24:00you know,
00:24:00for me,
00:24:01it's just coming out here
00:24:01and watching them do their thing,
00:24:03you know,
00:24:03seeing what they've been doing
00:24:04in practice all day.
00:24:05So,
00:24:05it's been fun watching them
00:24:06do their thing.
00:24:07No secret,
00:24:08there's a little bit of a competition
00:24:09to the other safety
00:24:10that's going to be going up
00:24:11against you this season.
00:24:13Who's kind of stood out
00:24:14to you at practice
00:24:15and maybe some
00:24:16during this game even?
00:24:17Man,
00:24:18I mean,
00:24:18Lathan,
00:24:18he's been doing
00:24:19a hell of a job
00:24:20all camp.
00:24:21You know,
00:24:21you saw him get the ball
00:24:22earlier in the game.
00:24:23So,
00:24:24he's been really impressive.
00:24:25You can do it all.
00:24:27Really,
00:24:27you know,
00:24:27grown individual
00:24:28and excited to see
00:24:30what he can do
00:24:30in the regular season.
00:24:32Un-football related,
00:24:33you have a reptile collection.
00:24:35I need to know
00:24:35how many reptiles
00:24:36are we talking
00:24:37and are they all
00:24:38in Charlotte right now?
00:24:39They're not in Charlotte.
00:24:40They're actually
00:24:41back home in San Antonio.
00:24:43I've had snakes,
00:24:44turtles,
00:24:44all that kind of stuff,
00:24:46lizards,
00:24:46you name it.
00:24:47Why reptiles, though?
00:24:49That's really just
00:24:49what I grew up wanting.
00:24:51I read a book
00:24:51like back in third grade
00:24:53and it was like
00:24:53something about a turtle
00:24:54and then I just fell in love
00:24:55with reptiles.
00:24:56And also,
00:24:57you're a guitar player, too,
00:24:59taking lessons?
00:24:59Yeah,
00:25:00I don't take lessons.
00:25:00I do my own
00:25:01on YouTube.
00:25:02So,
00:25:02I just learn on YouTube.
00:25:03Thanks so much, guys.
00:25:06Anish.
00:25:07I started guitar lessons
00:25:08in January.
00:25:10Really?
00:25:10Yeah.
00:25:11Hard instrument to learn
00:25:12when you've never played it.
00:25:13But I was talking to
00:25:15Trayvon Merrig at the start
00:25:16of camp.
00:25:17He's got a few tunes.
00:25:20Invited me to an open jam
00:25:21session training camp
00:25:22next year,
00:25:23but I got to catch up to him.
00:25:24He's got two and a half
00:25:25years on me.
00:25:25I don't know that term,
00:25:29open jam session.
00:25:30Just, you know,
00:25:31you just jam.
00:25:32Okay.
00:25:34So,
00:25:35you know,
00:25:36here we are.
00:25:36We're about to punt, right?
00:25:37We're still searching
00:25:38for gunners
00:25:39on this football team.
00:25:40And that's something that
00:25:41we're still anxious
00:25:43to see who's going
00:25:44to be our gunner.
00:25:45That punt,
00:25:46but Martin rolls
00:25:47into the end zone
00:25:47for a touchback.
00:25:492.03 to go
00:25:50in the third quarter
00:25:51of this preseason finale,
00:25:54if you couldn't tell.
00:25:55We're back after a word
00:25:56from your local
00:25:57Panther station.
00:26:02On August the 7th,
00:26:04the David and Nicole
00:26:05Tepper Foundation
00:26:05and the Panthers
00:26:06joined hundreds of
00:26:08volunteers to fill
00:26:09backpacks with
00:26:10essential school supplies
00:26:11as part of Classroom
00:26:13Central's fourth
00:26:14annual backpack build.
00:26:16In total,
00:26:17Classroom Central
00:26:18and its partners
00:26:19are donating
00:26:20more than 52,000
00:26:22backpacks
00:26:23with supplies
00:26:24to students in need
00:26:26with 38,000
00:26:27coming from
00:26:29the Foundation.
00:26:31Yeah, David and Nicole
00:26:32are unbelievable
00:26:34when it comes
00:26:35to the community.
00:26:37They don't get
00:26:38enough credit.
00:26:39No, they don't.
00:26:39They do not.
00:26:40Sometimes people
00:26:43are so consumed
00:26:44by what the product
00:26:45is on the football
00:26:46field that it hasn't
00:26:48had the years
00:26:48like 2003,
00:26:502005,
00:26:512015.
00:26:52And so all of a sudden
00:26:53they think
00:26:54because the product
00:26:55isn't good,
00:26:56so much money
00:26:57the Tepper Foundation
00:26:58is investing
00:26:59in this community
00:27:01where they make
00:27:02public announcements,
00:27:04but they invest
00:27:05so much more
00:27:05privately
00:27:06that they don't
00:27:08even say
00:27:09because they're
00:27:10not doing it
00:27:10to, like,
00:27:13trick people
00:27:13into believing
00:27:14they're investing
00:27:15in this community.
00:27:16They're showing you
00:27:16they are investing
00:27:17in this community.
00:27:19No, I think
00:27:19you said that great.
00:27:21So,
00:27:22I'm going to
00:27:23change paths
00:27:24here for one second.
00:27:25Logan Woodside
00:27:26is now the quarterback.
00:27:29Logan Woodside
00:27:30is out of Toledo.
00:27:32He's has five years
00:27:34of experience
00:27:34in the NFL.
00:27:36I talked
00:27:37to his high school
00:27:40football team
00:27:41when he was a senior
00:27:42in high school
00:27:42in Kentucky.
00:27:43Damn you old.
00:27:44In Frankfort, Kentucky.
00:27:46That's a fact.
00:27:47I've gotten to know
00:27:47Logan well.
00:27:48A good buddy of mine,
00:27:49Mark Toothacre,
00:27:50out of Kentucky,
00:27:51works at a stud farm
00:27:53there.
00:27:54I have the race horses.
00:27:55I was there for a sale
00:27:56and he asked
00:27:57if I could come talk
00:27:58to the football team.
00:27:59They were in, like,
00:27:59the quarters or semis,
00:28:01one of those.
00:28:02And I went
00:28:02and I met Logan
00:28:03and I've stayed friends
00:28:04with him throughout
00:28:05the years.
00:28:06Been able to see him
00:28:07on sidelines.
00:28:08So, I think that's
00:28:09pretty cool.
00:28:10Young kid that,
00:28:11you know,
00:28:11watching them
00:28:12at their high school
00:28:13in Kentucky
00:28:13and it's just,
00:28:15it's awesome.
00:28:15So, you're telling me
00:28:16you went to Kentucky
00:28:18years ago
00:28:19and saw a young stud
00:28:20and now you're watching.
00:28:21Hey, there you go.
00:28:22I like it.
00:28:23That's really good.
00:28:24That's pretty cool.
00:28:25You know,
00:28:25that's pretty awesome.
00:28:27Well, just think about it.
00:28:28I'm watching,
00:28:29I'm watching,
00:28:30you know,
00:28:30so I'm flying here today,
00:28:32right?
00:28:32Yep.
00:28:33And guess who I'm
00:28:33on the plane with
00:28:34from New Orleans?
00:28:35Deez.
00:28:36Pat Swilling.
00:28:36Pat Swilling,
00:28:37one of the legendary
00:28:38linebackers from the
00:28:39Superdome, right?
00:28:40From the Dome Patrol.
00:28:41Well, his son,
00:28:42number 39,
00:28:43just made the tackle
00:28:44play before,
00:28:45Trey Swilling.
00:28:46Yep.
00:28:46And so I get,
00:28:46I talk to Pat today
00:28:47and I'm looking at this man
00:28:49and it's like,
00:28:50my gosh.
00:28:50No, we're getting
00:28:50the Hawkeye
00:28:51virtual measurement.
00:28:52I've been waiting on this.
00:28:55Measures how far
00:28:56the ball is
00:28:56from the line of the game.
00:28:57About two and a half inches.
00:28:59Wow.
00:29:00And that's the technology
00:29:01we see in tennis.
00:29:02Yeah.
00:29:03And not with that,
00:29:04have you noticed
00:29:05the umpire,
00:29:05Roy Ellison,
00:29:06is now the white hat
00:29:08for the second half?
00:29:10Yeah,
00:29:11that is correct.
00:29:12Adrian Hill.
00:29:12He was the ref
00:29:13in the first
00:29:14and now Roy,
00:29:15the umpire,
00:29:15is now the white hat.
00:29:17Here's a little cool thing
00:29:18that just pieced together
00:29:20when you were talking.
00:29:21I'm looking at the roster
00:29:22for the Panthers
00:29:24in Pittsburgh
00:29:25and I'm pretty sure
00:29:28Joy Porter Jr.
00:29:32was around
00:29:33when both of us
00:29:35had the opportunity
00:29:36with the Panthers
00:29:37or others
00:29:38when his dad was playing
00:29:39as well.
00:29:41And obviously,
00:29:42the same thing.
00:29:43I went to practice
00:29:43a couple of years ago
00:29:44and Austin Prole
00:29:46is in there.
00:29:47Musa Muhammad Jr.
00:29:49He was there.
00:29:49And so,
00:29:50just to let you know
00:29:51that we,
00:29:53even though we have been
00:29:54great players
00:29:55or pretty good players
00:29:56with that organization,
00:30:02with that organization,
00:30:03you also remember
00:30:04we're all humans
00:30:06and we're all
00:30:07are trying to play
00:30:08this game
00:30:08that we look up to
00:30:09and you get the opportunity
00:30:11and all the great people
00:30:12that you meet
00:30:13along the way.
00:30:15illegal block
00:30:17at the back
00:30:17by the offense,
00:30:1862.
00:30:20Ten-yard penalty.
00:30:21First down.
00:30:23It's McCollum.
00:30:24Carla?
00:30:27Yeah, we know
00:30:27Trevin Wallace,
00:30:28of course,
00:30:29not on the field right now.
00:30:30Shaq Thompson
00:30:30no longer with this team,
00:30:32which is just crazy
00:30:32to think about as a fan.
00:30:34But, of course,
00:30:34his mindset and legacy
00:30:35was left with guys
00:30:36like Trevin on this team,
00:30:37a linebacker
00:30:38that Shaq invested in
00:30:39all last season.
00:30:40Trevin and Shaq
00:30:41have constantly been
00:30:42texting this offseason
00:30:43and he's been telling them,
00:30:44guy, you're the next man
00:30:46up on this team.
00:30:47And Trevin also
00:30:48leans on guys
00:30:49like Luke Keekly.
00:30:50So, guys,
00:30:51I would say
00:30:51those are two
00:30:52pretty good linebackers
00:30:53to get advice from.
00:30:56We have reached
00:30:57the end of the third quarter
00:30:58here in Charlotte.
00:31:01Steelers 13,
00:31:02Panthers 10.
00:31:03You're watching
00:31:04Panthers football
00:31:05presented by Atrium Health.
00:31:13If you want
00:31:15total health care
00:31:15from a provider you trust,
00:31:17Blue Cross Blue Shield
00:31:19of North Carolina,
00:31:20North Carolina's
00:31:21most preferred health insurer.
00:31:24Fourth quarter
00:31:24of the final preseason game.
00:31:26Tuesday,
00:31:27rosters cut down to 53.
00:31:29The Panthers open up
00:31:30week one on the road
00:31:3217 days from now
00:31:34against Jacksonville
00:31:36alongside Steve Smith Sr.
00:31:38and Jake DeLome.
00:31:39A couple of Panther legends.
00:31:40Simon E. Schroff.
00:31:42Aerial coverage brought to you
00:31:43by the Lucas Spoil helicopter.
00:31:45Steelers begin the fourth quarter
00:31:47with the first and 18.
00:31:50Near midfield,
00:31:51Logan Woodside
00:31:52is the quarterback
00:31:53in an empty set.
00:32:01Woodside's throw
00:32:02too hot to the sideline.
00:32:04We get another flag
00:32:04in the backfield.
00:32:07J.J. Weaver
00:32:08was in the backfield.
00:32:10Yeah, I think I'd get it
00:32:12for a personal foul, believe.
00:32:13I think you might hit him low, too.
00:32:15Personal foul.
00:32:17Rough in the pass.
00:32:18Number 47.
00:32:20First down.
00:32:2115 yards.
00:32:22Automatic first down.
00:32:25Fourth quarter stats
00:32:26brought to you
00:32:27by Bank of America.
00:32:28Panthers 50%
00:32:29on third downs.
00:32:31Not a ton of offense
00:32:32in that third quarter
00:32:33for Carolina.
00:32:35No, not a ton of offense.
00:32:36And kind of went backwards
00:32:38a little bit, but, you know,
00:32:40got to be expected.
00:32:42We'll rotate some young
00:32:43offensive linemen.
00:32:44We have a quarterback
00:32:44we saw in a few days ago.
00:32:46And there's going to be some
00:32:47feasts, going to be some famine.
00:32:51First down and 10
00:32:52from the 36 of Carolina.
00:32:54Another four-man rush.
00:33:05Woodside over the middle,
00:33:07incomplete through the hands
00:33:08of J.J. Galbraith.
00:33:11You know, you just talked about
00:33:12Tuesday, the cut-down date,
00:33:13right, to 53.
00:33:14I know Steve never really
00:33:18have to live through
00:33:19those moments of worrying
00:33:20about being cut.
00:33:21I've been cut once.
00:33:22Yeah, but not on cut-down day.
00:33:25So, I know what it's like.
00:33:27I know what these guys
00:33:28are going to go through.
00:33:29Like, you're going to work
00:33:30that day, it's like
00:33:32if somebody come and tap you,
00:33:33hey, bring your playbook.
00:33:35I mean, it's...
00:33:36They have them strategically
00:33:37placed around
00:33:39because some guys go work out.
00:33:41Right, they feel like
00:33:42if I get a workout in,
00:33:43so there's a guy
00:33:44with a name...
00:33:45He has a list of names
00:33:47in his hand
00:33:48that he's sitting in.
00:33:49And then there's a guy...
00:33:50Remember, Porter.
00:33:51There's a guy sitting
00:33:52in the John Coleman lobby.
00:33:55He's sitting there waiting.
00:33:57And then there's a guy
00:33:58just kind of lingering
00:33:59around in the locker room.
00:34:01I personally
00:34:02used to always come in
00:34:05late on cut day
00:34:06because it was hard
00:34:08to see these guys.
00:34:11You would see men
00:34:12who were veterans
00:34:13or rookies
00:34:14cry because they know
00:34:17that this may be
00:34:18their last opportunity.
00:34:20So it was extremely difficult
00:34:21to sometimes emotionally
00:34:23see those guys
00:34:24that you bonded with.
00:34:26And this was when
00:34:26training camp
00:34:27was in Spartanburg.
00:34:28We were there a month.
00:34:29Right.
00:34:31Steve hit it like
00:34:32it's emotional.
00:34:33Yes, these men
00:34:34are big, strong,
00:34:36big egos, right?
00:34:37These bravado.
00:34:38But I mean,
00:34:39it's difficult.
00:34:40It's hard.
00:34:40And I'm exactly like Steve.
00:34:42You just feel...
00:34:42So you know the ones
00:34:44that put everything into it.
00:34:48Four-star offense
00:34:50on the 62.
00:34:52Five-yard ability.
00:34:54Fourth down.
00:34:54Another penalty
00:34:55on Ryan McCollum.
00:34:56So fourth and one
00:34:57turns into fourth and six.
00:35:00And Saul's comes on
00:35:01for his third field goal
00:35:03try of the game.
00:35:05You know,
00:35:05and you think about
00:35:06as difficult as it is
00:35:08on those days.
00:35:09And I've been cut, right?
00:35:10But it's also that feeling
00:35:12when you know
00:35:13you gave everything you had
00:35:15and you played well
00:35:16and you don't get the call,
00:35:18which means you made the team.
00:35:19There's something great about it.
00:35:21John Fox,
00:35:22I always thought,
00:35:23handled it the best.
00:35:24He would come in there
00:35:25the day after
00:35:25and he was...
00:35:26John Fox was always
00:35:27in a good mood.
00:35:28And he was in a bad mood
00:35:29because he said,
00:35:30I had to cut people
00:35:31that they gave me
00:35:32everything they had.
00:35:33They just weren't
00:35:34quite good enough.
00:35:35And that's something to be said.
00:35:36I tell you,
00:35:37one of the things
00:35:38that people...
00:35:40The field goal is good
00:35:42from 49 for Solz,
00:35:44who is now hit
00:35:45from 50 and 38 as well.
00:35:48Wow.
00:35:4916-10, Pittsburgh.
00:35:52We'll get to Steve's thought
00:35:53after we come back.
00:35:54And a word from
00:35:55your local Panther station.
00:35:59To be able to give back
00:36:01out here,
00:36:01again,
00:36:02it's a reason why
00:36:03I was able to make it
00:36:04to Carolina.
00:36:05So we believe
00:36:06in the importance
00:36:07of mental health
00:36:08for all ages,
00:36:09but especially
00:36:09for the youth,
00:36:10you know,
00:36:10we work it into the camp
00:36:12where we give them
00:36:12little tools
00:36:13to help them,
00:36:14whether it may be
00:36:15in athletics or in life,
00:36:16little things they can do
00:36:17to help with their mental health
00:36:19and little tricks
00:36:21and tips that I use personally.
00:36:23And hopefully,
00:36:24they get used to that.
00:36:24They can put that
00:36:25into their routines
00:36:26or just get comfortable
00:36:27with having those conversations.
00:36:28This summer,
00:36:30quarterback Bryce Young
00:36:31and the Young Nine Foundation
00:36:33held youth camps
00:36:34to promote mental wellness
00:36:36for athletes early
00:36:37in their sports careers.
00:36:39Young hosted a camp
00:36:40here in Charlotte
00:36:40as well
00:36:41as he did
00:36:42at the Rose Bowl
00:36:43in Pasadena
00:36:44and his alma mater,
00:36:46Notre Dame High School
00:36:47in Carolina.
00:36:48Certainly,
00:36:48we learned a lot about
00:36:49Bryce Young's mental fortitude
00:36:51the season to go
00:36:53the way he rebounded
00:36:54from that benching
00:36:55and the way he finished
00:36:57the season
00:36:57with a flourish
00:36:58and cemented himself
00:37:00as the clear quarterback
00:37:02for this franchise
00:37:03moving forward.
00:37:05Before we went to break,
00:37:07Steve and Jake
00:37:08were talking about
00:37:09that experience
00:37:10of getting cut deep.
00:37:12You've been there
00:37:13for people who don't know
00:37:15what that feels like.
00:37:16You were telling me
00:37:17in the commercial,
00:37:18what was that like?
00:37:20For me,
00:37:21I've never been cut before,
00:37:23right,
00:37:24until that moment.
00:37:25And obviously,
00:37:25you know,
00:37:26I was here for 13 years
00:37:27and got released.
00:37:29But one of the things
00:37:30that I really question
00:37:31is I was also older
00:37:33and came off an injury.
00:37:35So I had some knee structure
00:37:37and stuff that I was questioning.
00:37:39And I was sitting there
00:37:40at one point going,
00:37:42am I good enough?
00:37:45And for me,
00:37:46when I'm sitting by myself
00:37:48asking,
00:37:48am I good enough?
00:37:49That's not a good question.
00:37:51Because now I have
00:37:52internal dialogue,
00:37:54the mental gymnastics,
00:37:56that all of a sudden
00:37:57I question who I am,
00:37:58how did I get here?
00:38:00And the best way
00:38:01you can not do that
00:38:02is get back out there.
00:38:03So I had a moment
00:38:04where I just said,
00:38:06well, I'm done,
00:38:06and I quit working out.
00:38:08And then all of a sudden,
00:38:09my agent said,
00:38:10no, we have opportunities.
00:38:12And so,
00:38:14but for that moment,
00:38:15I felt that I wasn't good enough.
00:38:20What got you through it?
00:38:22Well, what really got me through it is
00:38:24I got a phone call.
00:38:26I got multiple phone calls.
00:38:28But here's the problem.
00:38:30Not everybody gets the multiple phone calls.
00:38:32I got a phone call from Washington.
00:38:35I got a phone call from San Diego.
00:38:37Bill Belichick,
00:38:38I remember getting my phone
00:38:41and I'm going,
00:38:42who the hell is William?
00:38:44William Belichick was calling me
00:38:47and it's like,
00:38:49oh,
00:38:49and then I'm on my way
00:38:51in Charlotte
00:38:52and that's when they sent over
00:38:55the offer via fax.
00:38:59Perkins on the move.
00:39:01Whoa.
00:39:03Uh-oh.
00:39:04He won't get the first down.
00:39:05I love it.
00:39:08By any means necessary, right?
00:39:10Jake, you've been in that spot.
00:39:11Sure.
00:39:11You were saying when
00:39:12you're told to turn your playbook in,
00:39:15you're not sure
00:39:15if that call's ever going to come.
00:39:17You're not sure
00:39:17if it's going to come.
00:39:18And, you know,
00:39:19it's hard because you try to
00:39:20you give everything you have, right?
00:39:23And then
00:39:23are you just not good enough?
00:39:25I mean,
00:39:25and that's what's
00:39:26there's going to be
00:39:28many guys on this field tonight
00:39:30that we watch play
00:39:30that's going to get cut.
00:39:32And that's going to go
00:39:33through their mind.
00:39:34And there's going to be
00:39:35many on this field
00:39:35that's going to get cut
00:39:36that's going to have
00:39:37a long career in the NFL.
00:39:38I'll never forget
00:39:39the story you told me
00:39:40when you went to play
00:39:42in NFL Europe
00:39:43and found out
00:39:44you wouldn't be
00:39:45the starting quarterback there.
00:39:47And you told me
00:39:47how demoralized you were
00:39:48until years later
00:39:49when you found out
00:39:50who beat you out
00:39:51for the starting job.
00:39:52Exactly right.
00:39:52So today,
00:39:53I'm coming from the hotel
00:39:54and I ride with Bryce Perkins.
00:39:57We ride together
00:39:58to the game today.
00:40:00And we're talking
00:40:01and we're talking
00:40:01about the Spring Football League
00:40:02and I said,
00:40:03well,
00:40:03I got sent over to NFL Europe
00:40:04twice in 1998 and 99.
00:40:07Amsterdam in 98.
00:40:08Frankfurt in 99.
00:40:09And I didn't play in 98
00:40:11because I backed up.
00:40:13I wasn't good enough
00:40:14to start in NFL Europe.
00:40:15But I was backing up
00:40:16an arena league quarterback.
00:40:18I didn't know
00:40:19it was Kurt Warner
00:40:19at the time.
00:40:21But I said,
00:40:21the guy's,
00:40:22one, he's a good guy.
00:40:24Two, he's got a quick release
00:40:25and he's accurate.
00:40:28But he plays arena league.
00:40:29But I mean,
00:40:29that's what your mindset is,
00:40:31right?
00:40:31Because he went to Green Bay
00:40:33when he came out
00:40:33of northern Iowa
00:40:34and Kurt has told me
00:40:36this story many times.
00:40:37He goes,
00:40:37Jake, I couldn't call a play
00:40:38in the huddle.
00:40:39I think it was Mark Burnell,
00:40:40Ty Dedmer,
00:40:41and certainly Brett Favre.
00:40:41He said,
00:40:42Jake, I could not call a play.
00:40:44And he said,
00:40:45I wasn't ready.
00:40:46And he's,
00:40:46you know,
00:40:47we know the story, right?
00:40:48Then he starts playing
00:40:48arena league
00:40:49and then he's the MVP,
00:40:50what,
00:40:50one or two years in a row?
00:40:52One more shot.
00:40:53St. Louis Rams allocated
00:40:54him to Amsterdam.
00:40:55He and I on the same team
00:40:56and I got to watch
00:40:57a Hall of Famer
00:40:58every single day.
00:40:59But you had no idea.
00:41:00No idea.
00:41:01But I knew the guy
00:41:02was accurate.
00:41:02He was tough
00:41:04and he was smart.
00:41:05I knew that.
00:41:09Perkins in trouble
00:41:10and lassoed to the ground.
00:41:13Kyler Ball comes up
00:41:14with the sack.
00:41:16Yeah,
00:41:17it's a tough sledding
00:41:18right now.
00:41:19It's a tough spot.
00:41:20It's a very tough spot.
00:41:21Perkins just got here,
00:41:22basically thrown
00:41:23into the fire.
00:41:25Not much of a chance.
00:41:26It's a four-man rush.
00:41:27They're sitting zone
00:41:27behind you.
00:41:28Really and truly,
00:41:29he had nowhere
00:41:31to throw the ball
00:41:32line.
00:41:33Got some penetration
00:41:34and nowhere to go
00:41:35and he'll keep battling.
00:41:39You guys should watch
00:41:40the Gunners.
00:41:41Gunners on this
00:41:42punch for the Panthers.
00:41:43Just seem weird
00:41:44and T.J. Luther.
00:41:45Yeah, I know that
00:41:46T.J. Luther's had
00:41:47a pretty good night tonight.
00:41:52Good kick here by Martin.
00:41:55Keyshawn Williams.
00:41:56Yes, pinballed out of bounds,
00:41:59shy of the 25.
00:42:05You're watching
00:42:06Panthers football.
00:42:09Not going to break just yet.
00:42:13They've got a penalty.
00:42:14We'll get a re-kick.
00:42:32Yeah, I'm not so sure how many
00:42:34of them want to re-kick right now.
00:42:379-0-9 to go in the fourth
00:42:38quarter of the final pre-season
00:42:39game.
00:42:40Yeah, I'm sure it's a, but look,
00:42:41another opportunity, right?
00:42:44We'll get to watch the record
00:42:45breaker, J.J. Jansen.
00:42:48J.J. Jansen entering his
00:42:5118th NFL season, 17th with
00:42:54Carolina.
00:42:56Nobody's played in more games
00:42:58in Panther history than J.J.
00:43:00Jansen.
00:43:00I was actually a teammate
00:43:02with J.J. Jansen.
00:43:03That tells you a lot, right?
00:43:04That tells you a lot.
00:43:05I was actually a teammate.
00:43:07The running joke over the last
00:43:09few days, we talked to Nick
00:43:10Scored 2009.
00:43:12With?
00:43:14Yes.
00:43:15What do you, hold on.
00:43:16I was a teammate here with J.J.
00:43:18Jansen.
00:43:18That's how long he's been here.
00:43:20Oh, you missed it.
00:43:22I really wasn't.
00:43:23He's a long snapper.
00:43:24I knew that's where you were
00:43:25going.
00:43:26So the running joke inside the
00:43:29locker room has been when
00:43:30Nick Scorton, the 20-year-old
00:43:32rookie, turns 21 next month.
00:43:34When he came on and J.J.
00:43:36Jansen's 39 years old, they
00:43:39started to do the math and
00:43:40escorted and let J.J.
00:43:42Jansen know, hey, you're as
00:43:43old as my mom.
00:43:45Oh, wow.
00:43:46Oh, my gosh.
00:43:46Bam Martin.
00:43:47Bam Martin.
00:43:47Scott, he's another guy,
00:43:49undrafted.
00:43:49South Carolina has made plays.
00:43:52The coaches like him.
00:43:53He plays special teams.
00:43:54He's got some ability.
00:43:55That's what you want to see.
00:43:59Running down full speed.
00:44:00Waiting on the call here.
00:44:02I love it.
00:44:05That's some thump.
00:44:06That's a good hit.
00:44:08That's why he's called Bam.
00:44:19Doing a kid.
00:44:23On Sportsman Lake Conduct,
00:44:24number 37.
00:44:2615-yard penalty will be added
00:44:29on to the end of the run.
00:44:33Come on.
00:44:36Well.
00:44:41We will step aside.
00:44:43This is Panthers football
00:44:45presented by Atrium Health.
00:44:53MVP.
00:44:53A reminder for Bojangles,
00:44:58scan the QR code on your screen
00:45:00to claim a free Bo's chicken sandwich.
00:45:03And don't forget,
00:45:04drive through Bojangles after the game
00:45:05with your gift card
00:45:06or free sandwich from tonight's broadcast.
00:45:10It's a win-win for fans
00:45:11and flavor.
00:45:16Panthers back on defense.
00:45:17Less than nine minutes to go.
00:45:19Fourth quarter preseason finale.
00:45:21Pittsburgh leading 16-10.
00:45:23Logan Woodside,
00:45:27the Steelers quarterback.
00:45:28Off play action.
00:45:30Chased by Boogie Basham.
00:45:31Able to complete.
00:45:32Trey Swilling the tackle
00:45:33near the Carolina 40.
00:45:36Carla Metz is with Hunter Renfro.
00:45:39That's right,
00:45:39and we saw a lot of action
00:45:40from this wide receiver
00:45:42in the first half,
00:45:43but obviously,
00:45:43what a great story
00:45:44that you've had over the past year
00:45:45coming back into the NFL,
00:45:47getting a chance.
00:45:47What does it mean to you
00:45:49to be back out there
00:45:50on the field tonight
00:45:51and get some more snaps
00:45:52and playing time?
00:45:54Yeah, it was fun.
00:45:54It was fun just to be
00:45:55out there with the guys.
00:45:56First preseason game,
00:45:58I wasn't able to go out there.
00:45:59I got a little bit in Houston,
00:46:01and then to go out there
00:46:02and treat it like a game
00:46:03and kind of get in the flow of the game
00:46:05and get, like, game reps
00:46:06under your legs.
00:46:07It was good, man.
00:46:12And it was good to just get live reps,
00:46:14so it was a lot of fun.
00:46:15Yeah, you're from South Carolina,
00:46:17played at Clemson, of course.
00:46:20When did it become a reality
00:46:21that you were going to be able
00:46:23to come here and play
00:46:23for the Carolina Panthers,
00:46:24and what made sense
00:46:25about that move for you?
00:46:26Yeah, Carolina means so much to me.
00:46:29Growing up in Myrtle Beach,
00:46:30going to Clemson,
00:46:31my wife going to Clemson,
00:46:33and so we just love it here,
00:46:34and then we went out to Oakland,
00:46:35went to the Raiders for four years,
00:46:37or Vegas for four, Raiders for five,
00:46:40and had a great time out there,
00:46:41but I love cornfields.
00:46:44I love seeing trees, seeing deer,
00:46:46and being around family.
00:46:48My family means so much to me,
00:46:50and so just to be around them,
00:46:52be around my parents,
00:46:54it was an opportunity
00:46:55that if I was going to come back,
00:46:57it was going to be here,
00:46:58and so I love it here,
00:46:59and I love to see Carolina
00:47:01get better, better, better,
00:47:02and be a part of that.
00:47:03You also had Coach Davos Sweeney
00:47:05out of practice earlier,
00:47:06had to come see you,
00:47:07make those reps at practice.
00:47:09How special was that,
00:47:10and what did he tell you?
00:47:11Coach Sweeney likes to take
00:47:12a lot of credit for a lot of things.
00:47:14No, I actually talked to him
00:47:15earlier today.
00:47:16He is an amazing person first,
00:47:18and he's an amazing coach,
00:47:19but he just wants to have fun.
00:47:22You know, football should be
00:47:23a game of fun,
00:47:23and the fun is in the winnings,
00:47:26the fun is in the process,
00:47:28the fun is in the caring
00:47:28about your teammates,
00:47:30and so he really,
00:47:32you know,
00:47:32we played a lot of golf this summer,
00:47:34and he just was going at it,
00:47:35at it, at it,
00:47:35about coming back,
00:47:36giving it one more go,
00:47:37and seeing if you enjoy it,
00:47:39and so that's what I'm doing.
00:47:40All right, thanks so much.
00:47:41We appreciate it, Anish.
00:47:43Thank you, Carla.
00:47:44Hunter Renfro with a real chance
00:47:46to make the 53-man roster.
00:47:48Nobody had any idea
00:47:50how much he had left in the tank,
00:47:52but healthy.
00:47:53He's had a great training camp.
00:47:56Just seems happy.
00:47:58Listening to him talk.
00:48:00He's been through a lot.
00:48:01That's why, and, you know,
00:48:03going to different organizations,
00:48:04everybody's built differently
00:48:05and expanding different things.
00:48:08Screen pass to Lou Nichols
00:48:10is snuffed out.
00:48:11A loss of about three on the play.
00:48:14Fourth down.
00:48:15And Mike Green made the play.
00:48:17It was really tough for a guy like him
00:48:18who had such an impact
00:48:20and offensive presence
00:48:22for the Las Vegas, Oakland,
00:48:23and Las Vegas Raiders,
00:48:25and then all of a sudden,
00:48:26he falls on a hard time
00:48:27with the health,
00:48:28and all of a sudden,
00:48:29he kind of just feels isolated
00:48:30and kind of left dealt
00:48:32dealing with fixing himself
00:48:34and trying to figure out
00:48:35how he can get back on the playing field.
00:48:3828-yard attempt
00:48:40for Ben Sahls.
00:48:45He is four for four tonight.
00:48:48He's accounted for the last four Pittsburgh scores.
00:48:53We're back after a word
00:48:54from your local Panther station.
00:48:56And he's rough,
00:49:02Jake DeLome,
00:49:03Steve Smith's senior preseason finale.
00:49:06Ryan Fitzgerald
00:49:08put the Panthers on the board first
00:49:09with a 43-yard field goal.
00:49:12Pittsburgh
00:49:12with the answer,
00:49:14but not before this.
00:49:17Lath and a ransom
00:49:18with an INT.
00:49:19Jack Plummer, though,
00:49:20gave it right back.
00:49:21Yeah,
00:49:22Jack gave it back,
00:49:23but we were able to answer.
00:49:25Pittsburgh went down the field,
00:49:26got us on the double move
00:49:27for a touchdown,
00:49:28but we were able to answer.
00:49:31And that's what you got to love.
00:49:32Jack was able to drop back.
00:49:34They brought pressure.
00:49:35James Mitchell wide open
00:49:36to get the touchdown.
00:49:38And then in the second half,
00:49:40it has been all field goals,
00:49:41all from Pittsburgh.
00:49:4319-10.
00:49:44Your score,
00:49:466-21 to go.
00:49:49Chance here on the return
00:49:50for Jimmy Horn.
00:49:53Sixth rounder
00:49:54out of Colorado.
00:49:56And we get a flag on the play.
00:49:58Hang on,
00:49:58two flags.
00:50:01A lot of penalty markers
00:50:03in the second half.
00:50:05Watching Jimmy set that,
00:50:06set the edge on that return.
00:50:08He went a little bit too quick,
00:50:10knee to sell it,
00:50:10a little bit more,
00:50:11going to the right.
00:50:12There's a left return.
00:50:14That's what,
00:50:16that's what
00:50:16caused this penalty.
00:50:19Doing the wrong.
00:50:21Holding on the return team.
00:50:2342.
00:50:24Two-yard.
00:50:25From the end of the run.
00:50:27First down.
00:50:29Tracy Smith looking on,
00:50:31the Panthers special teams coach.

00:51:00Bryce Perkins under center.
00:51:04Just acquired a few days ago
00:51:06to be the backup
00:51:07to Jack Plummer today.
00:51:10Lines just seeing Reed.
00:51:11First down,
00:51:12make that Kobe Hudson
00:51:13with the catch
00:51:14as we check in with Carla.
00:51:16That's right.
00:51:16Here with a new linebacker,
00:51:17Christian Roseboom,
00:51:18obviously coming over
00:51:19from the Rams.
00:51:20There's quite a few guys
00:51:21here from that 2022
00:51:22Super Bowl team.
00:51:24Who's your guy
00:51:25that maybe you talked to
00:51:26first knowing that
00:51:27you were coming to Carolina?
00:51:30Well, there's
00:51:31probably Bobby
00:51:32was the first one
00:51:32that I,
00:51:34yeah,
00:51:34I don't even know
00:51:35to be honest
00:51:36with all the guys.
00:51:37Corbett reached out,
00:51:38Nick Scott reached out.
00:51:39But yeah,
00:51:40it's good to have
00:51:40a little bit of familiarity
00:51:41coming in.
00:51:42But now,
00:51:43now it's like
00:51:43I've been on this team
00:51:44for many years
00:51:46just with training camp,
00:51:47how much time
00:51:47you spend together.
00:51:48You get to know
00:51:49the guys really well.
00:51:49So it's been good.
00:51:50You also have been
00:51:51kind of texting
00:51:52back and forth,
00:51:53I heard,
00:51:53with Josie Jewell
00:51:54and you both
00:51:55are from Iowa,
00:51:55but you didn't really
00:51:56have maybe any affiliation
00:51:57with him beforehand.
00:51:58What's his conversation
00:51:59been with you like
00:52:00preparing to play
00:52:01for the Panthers?
00:52:03Yeah,
00:52:03it was great
00:52:04to get to know him
00:52:05just kind of respecting
00:52:06his game from afar
00:52:08and his career.
00:52:09Obviously,
00:52:10wish I could play
00:52:10with him still,
00:52:11but,
00:52:11you know,
00:52:12it's been a great
00:52:14organization for linebackers
00:52:17and Josie's one of those.
00:52:19So nothing but respect
00:52:20for that,
00:52:20for sure.
00:52:21What do you think
00:52:21about the women
00:52:22hit from the first half?
00:52:24Sorry,
00:52:25the what?
00:52:26Oh,
00:52:27yeah,
00:52:27that's sweet.
00:52:28I told him,
00:52:29I was like,
00:52:29that one felt good,
00:52:30huh?
00:52:30He's like,
00:52:30yeah,
00:52:30because he was just like,
00:52:32I just want to get
00:52:33one good hit out of the way.
00:52:35But yeah,
00:52:35it was sweet.
00:52:35Even Bam had a nice one
00:52:37on a punt
00:52:38just a little bit ago,
00:52:39too.
00:52:39So linebackers are hitting
00:52:41today,
00:52:41which is good.
00:52:42We appreciate your time.
00:52:43Thanks so much.
00:52:44Anish.
00:52:44All right,
00:52:45Carla,
00:52:46K-Ron Lynch-Adams
00:52:47with the first round,
00:52:49or with the first down
00:52:49catch.
00:52:5125-year-old undrafted
00:52:52free agent.
00:52:53Last stop
00:52:55was Michigan State.
00:52:571,100-yard rusher
00:52:58with UMass
00:52:59two years ago.
00:53:01He gets the call
00:53:02for a cutback lane,
00:53:04nothing there.
00:53:06Second and 10.
00:53:07He'd love to see a finish
00:53:11on this drive, right?
00:53:12Start the ball
00:53:13on the 13-yard line.
00:53:15I'd love to see Bryce
00:53:16be able to run around
00:53:17a little bit.
00:53:17We did get a big first down
00:53:19throw to a running back
00:53:20to move the chains,
00:53:21and I'd love to see him
00:53:23get a drive.
00:53:24Have some of these young guys
00:53:26be able to sustain the drive,
00:53:28go a little bit longer
00:53:29than 3-and-out,
00:53:30have kind of really
00:53:32run out the clock
00:53:33this four minutes
00:53:34so you can finish
00:53:34on a high note.
00:53:37Second and 10,
00:53:38less than four minutes
00:53:39to go.
00:53:39And then it's countdown
00:53:41to cut day,
00:53:42which is Tuesday.
00:53:43week one
00:53:45on the road
00:53:46against Jacksonville.
00:53:48Perkins
00:53:48into the second level
00:53:49and picks up
00:53:51a first down.
00:53:52Young man
00:53:52from a football family.
00:53:54Dad Bruce
00:53:55played running back
00:53:56for the Bucs.
00:53:57Brother Paul
00:53:57was an NFL running back
00:53:59for five years,
00:54:00played with the Giants,
00:54:01also was at UCLA
00:54:03in college.
00:54:06And Perkins
00:54:07has a unique connection
00:54:08to Mike Bercovici,
00:54:11who is the assistant
00:54:11quarterback
00:54:12and pass game specialist,
00:54:14a coach for the Panthers,
00:54:15very highly regarded
00:54:17in the Panthers coaching ranks,
00:54:19young ascending coach.
00:54:21Bercovici
00:54:21was the quarterback
00:54:23in Arizona State
00:54:25when Perkins
00:54:26was a redshirt in Tempe.
00:54:28Perkins, of course,
00:54:28would later go on
00:54:30to have his most success
00:54:32in college
00:54:32in Charlottesville
00:54:33at the University of Virginia,
00:54:35but that connection
00:54:36does exist.
00:54:37No, it does exist
00:54:38and talk to Bercovici
00:54:41before the game
00:54:42and I know
00:54:42they were tied
00:54:43at the hip
00:54:43all week long.
00:54:45It's like kind of
00:54:46trying to
00:54:46drink water
00:54:48through a fire hose.
00:54:49You're trying to learn,
00:54:49but he said,
00:54:50hey, there's so much.
00:54:51It's the same cadence.
00:54:52There's a lot of familiarity
00:54:53and said,
00:54:54Bryce,
00:54:55and Bercovici
00:54:56said this,
00:54:56he goes,
00:54:57Bryce just works
00:54:58his tail off
00:54:59and he was going to be
00:54:59as prepared as he could be
00:55:01for this game tonight.
00:55:02A loss of a yard
00:55:04for Lynch Adams.
00:55:06Third down,
00:55:07four to go,
00:55:08and that should
00:55:09take us
00:55:09to the two-minute warning.
00:55:14Yep.
00:55:14It's been a...
00:55:16It's been fun.
00:55:17It's been fun.
00:55:18You know,
00:55:18preseason,
00:55:19it's a...
00:55:21You watch,
00:55:22and I'm just...
00:55:22I still want somebody
00:55:23to make a play, right?
00:55:24Let's make a play
00:55:25if we can.
00:55:26This might put you
00:55:27over the top
00:55:27from...
00:55:28Even if it's
00:55:29hanging on to
00:55:29the practice squad.
00:55:31Yeah.
00:55:33Two-minute warning
00:55:34here in Charlotte.
00:55:36Panthers football
00:55:37is presented
00:55:38by Atrium Health.
00:55:51It's bow time.
00:55:52I got the high mic.
00:55:55All day.
00:55:56All day today.
00:56:06Let's go,
00:56:07let's go,
00:56:08let's go,
00:56:08let's go,
00:56:09here it's a,
00:56:10here it's a,
00:56:10here it's a,
00:56:11here it's a.
00:56:12Yeah.
00:56:13Ah, ah.
00:56:15You love to see
00:56:15that Damani Richardson,
00:56:17first guy up
00:56:19to congratulate
00:56:19his teammate,
00:56:20Lathan Ransom,
00:56:21even though both guys
00:56:22are competing
00:56:22for one of the starting
00:56:24safety spots
00:56:25opposite Trayvon Merrig.
00:56:27Richardson flashed
00:56:28last year as a rookie.
00:56:29Ransom had an interception
00:56:30tonight.
00:56:32You've got the veteran
00:56:33Nick Scott
00:56:33who might even be
00:56:35the favorite
00:56:36for that job.
00:56:37He's been starting
00:56:37most of training camp.
00:56:40A lot of decisions
00:56:40for Dave Canales,
00:56:42for Dan Morgan.
00:56:44Rosters get cut
00:56:45to 53
00:56:45on Tuesday.
00:56:47And really the two big
00:56:50position battles left.
00:56:52Starting safety
00:56:53and the other is kicker.
00:56:55Yeah, kicker.
00:56:55I'm anxious to see
00:56:56how that shakes out.
00:56:59You know,
00:56:59the young kid's got,
00:57:00got some pop,
00:57:01has a really good leg
00:57:02and didn't do anything
00:57:03to hurt his chances
00:57:04tonight.
00:57:05But at the safety position,
00:57:07you know,
00:57:07Trent Moore,
00:57:07when he interviewed
00:57:08earlier in the game
00:57:09tonight,
00:57:10he talked a ton
00:57:11about Latham Ransom
00:57:12and what he brings.
00:57:13So,
00:57:14we still have more time left.
00:57:15There's still another
00:57:16week and a half or so.
00:57:17Steelers blitz,
00:57:18quick release.
00:57:19Nice job by Bryce.
00:57:20Hudson brings it in
00:57:21for a first down.
00:57:22I think my man
00:57:23for the Steelers
00:57:24doesn't realize
00:57:25it's going to be
00:57:26a first down.
00:57:27He raised his finger up
00:57:27like he was stopped.
00:57:29I don't know if he had
00:57:29the one was up
00:57:30because it was a first down.
00:57:31I'm not sure.
00:57:32DBs.
00:57:34Remember he asked me
00:57:35around.
00:57:35I got you.
00:57:37Echo Liotta
00:57:38with the pressure
00:57:39on.
00:57:39Farmer Panther.
00:57:40He broke camp
00:57:41and broke the
00:57:43preseason
00:57:43with the Panthers
00:57:44on their 53-man roster.
00:57:46That was a year ago.
00:57:49The slingshot
00:57:49near side
00:57:50to Colby George,
00:57:51the former Miami
00:57:52Hurricane,
00:57:53undrafted rookie
00:57:54known for his
00:57:55explosiveness.
00:57:56Yeah, he has a ton
00:57:56of speed watching
00:57:57his film at Miami.
00:57:59Put him in space,
00:58:00get the football
00:58:00in his hands
00:58:01and he'll go.
00:58:03I like it.
00:58:04Give him a couple
00:58:05of first downs,
00:58:05get out of bounds.
00:58:06Come on, man.
00:58:07Let's go get some points.
00:58:08Yeah.
00:58:08This is where the
00:58:09excitement goes.
00:58:10This is where you,
00:58:10right now,
00:58:11this is where you
00:58:12start chirping,
00:58:13where you start
00:58:13talking and feeling
00:58:14good about yourself
00:58:15and saying,
00:58:15hey,
00:58:16got a chance
00:58:16to make a play.
00:58:18A chance to end
00:58:18the preseason
00:58:19on a high note.
00:58:22Perkins out of the gun.
00:58:23Hand-off is to Bailey.
00:58:26And a former
00:58:27Ragin' Cajun,
00:58:28Jake.
00:58:28Yeah,
00:58:29he was with us
00:58:30for, I think,
00:58:31a year or two
00:58:31and then he transferred
00:58:32back to TCU.
00:58:33TCU, yeah.
00:58:34He was from
00:58:34Denton, Texas,
00:58:36if I'm not mistaken.
00:58:37Ryan High School
00:58:37in Denson.

00:58:38went back.
00:58:40Yeah,
00:58:40good player.
00:58:41Real explosive
00:58:42and I know
00:58:43he's done some good
00:58:43things at camp.
00:58:45So do you count him
00:58:45as a Louisiana guy?
00:58:46Uh, well,
00:58:48he was there
00:58:49for a little bit.
00:58:50I don't know
00:58:51if he has
00:58:51the same accent
00:58:52I have,
00:58:52but he was there
00:58:54for a little while.
