00:41Speaking during World Steel Pan Day celebrations at Woodford Square on Monday, Minister Benjamin reflected on the struggle to have the steel pan recognized as the national instrument and symbol of the nation.
00:53We did the ancestral walk and it is symbolic of the struggle and it's good that we remember that struggle.
01:03The steel pan itself is a fitting metaphor for the journey of our people, forged from discarded oil drums.
01:13But now we shine.
01:16We shaped that oil drums.
01:19And now we have a beautiful musical instrument recognized by the world.
01:26Benjamin says with proper investments and care, the national instrument has the potential to generate significant foreign exchange for TNT.
01:34My people gathered here today, I am here to tell you that the steel pan, it is not just an instrument, but it has the capacity to earn forex exchange for Trinidad and Tobago.
01:51And with the help of my ministry and with Ms. Ramsey Moore, that will be done.
01:59Monday's celebration also featured an ancestral walk from the Massey Trinidad All-Stars Steel Orchestra Panyard, followed by formal events at Woodford Square.
02:09The evening ended with spirited performances from several steel bands closing out the World Steel Pan Day celebrations on a high note.
