West Indies legend Brian Lara has said that the Caribbean is falling behind in technology.

Lara's summation was one of the highlights of an Emergency CWI meeting at the Hyatt to find the way forward for regional cricket.

CWI CEO Chris Dehring also pinpointed issues like poor pitches as key reasons for the decline.

Vinod Narwani takes us in closer.

00:01Following the conclusion of the two-day emergency strategic summit, CWI members spoke with the media to announce the outcomes and immediate plans.
00:09Two-time World Cup winning captain Clive Lloyd was also present and said the meeting behind closed doors made a lot of sense and he wants it to be put into practice.
00:17And we had a very good discussion. I must say I was very impressed because I've been to a couple of these things before and we're hoping that all the things that we put forward and hope to see them come to fruition.
00:32The man who holds the record for the highest test score of 400 not out and an unbeaten 501 in first class cricket also had a few things to say.
00:41For one, Wendy's legend Brian Lara expressed disappointment that the Caribbean was still lagging behind in certain aspects, trying to play catch-up.
00:50Back in the days where skill was the prominent factor, we excelled. We were the best team in the world.
00:58But the game has evolved a lot. And with technology and analytics, I think we now have to see a new way of finding ourselves back to being very competitive.
01:14I said not on a level playing field because a lot of the countries are far ahead in these sort of areas.
01:20Lara made it clear to those present that the meeting held over the two days would not bear instant fruit as it's a work in progress.
01:27In talking about the decline, CWI CEO Chris Dering said there were many reasons for the poor performances over the years.
01:35We're talking about things like facilities at every level for the development of all cricketers, proper practice pitches across the region.
01:45The quality of all domestic tournaments would have been highlighted.
01:50There's definitely a skills deficiency at various levels that really don't get highlighted until they reach the international level.
02:01There are issues surrounding strength and conditioning, which again points back to potentially facilities that are available to our youngsters.
02:10Dering made it clear that such problems will be addressed if West Indies cricket is to make progress.
02:16Many players have been gravitating towards franchise cricket, which sometimes sees them not representing their country.
02:22It's something that concerns Enoch Lewis, chairman of the CWI Cricket Strategy and Officiating Committee.
02:28The way the cricketer sees it, it's loyalty to West Indies or loyalty to my family.
02:36And when you look at it this way, you understand where they're going to go.
02:40So cricket West Indies now have to try and strike some sort of balance.
02:45Of course, you encourage loyalty to West Indies cricket.
02:49But at the same time, you've got to find a way of balancing, just like in life, and you have to balance life.
02:56You've got to find a way of balancing that situation.
02:59More education, more history in terms of where we are from.
03:05On another note, there were those who questioned Darren Sammy replacing Andre Coley as test coach,
03:11which resulted in the St. Lucian being the multi-format coach.
03:15Was it to save cost?
03:16This is what CWI director of Cricket Miles Bascom had to say.
03:20I can definitely say there's no real significant savings in terms of having Darren as all-format coach.
03:30Because we still have to, we would still need support.
03:34We still need additional support for him.
03:36So we'll still have to have camps.
03:38Many times he would not be available himself because he would be on tour.
03:42And so we will still need to bring in other support staff, which would come at a cost.
03:48Sammy was captain of the West Indies when they won the 2012 and 2016 T20 World Cups in Sri Lanka and India, respectively.
03:55We know now our initiative's export.
