Cricket analyst Dr. Joseph 'Reds' Perreira expects a difficult two-match Test for the West Indies in Pakistan.

He says the Caribbean batters must occupy the crease for a long time if they are to prevent Pakistan from having the upper hand.

Dr. Perreira was speaking exclusively with CCN TV6 via phone .

00:00The West Indies have not won a single test series in the ongoing 2023-2025 World Test
00:06Championship cycle.
00:08The best results for the men in maroon have been 1-1 draws with Australia and Bangladesh.
00:12Now that they are set to take on Pakistan in Multan, there are those who see it as a
00:16challenging tour for the Caribbean team.
00:18And that includes former cricket commentator Dr. Joseph Retz-Pereira, who resides in St.
00:23Lucia.
00:24According to him, the Pakistani spinners can be quite a handful.
00:27Well, certainly the West Indies under Captain Bradford and Coach Coley can expect a very
00:32tough tour.
00:34Pakistan conditions definitely favour the home side.
00:39They have just come out of a fairly competitive tour in South Africa.
00:44Their batting did well.
00:46And against England, Coley will point out that they started with pace and switched to
00:52spin.
00:53And that did the trick against England.
00:55And already we are seeing an announcement of the Pakistan side that they will hardly
01:00maybe play more than one fast bowler.
01:03Gabba hero Shamaar Joseph is all through injury, which Dr. Pereira thinks is a setback for
01:08the West Indies.
01:09As such, he says the other fast bowlers have to come good and make things difficult for
01:13the Pakistani batters.
01:15The well-respected cricket analyst says there is one thing the Windies must not do should
01:19they win the toss.
01:21Well, I certainly feel that the West Indies shouldn't be winning the toss and batting
01:25first.
01:26I think it's a case where you ask the Pakistanis to bat, they will decide how aggressive they
01:32want to be, how far they want to go, and you will be able to settle into the opening test
01:42match at least knowing that you are still very much in the opening test.
01:48I think the discipline of our attack is very, very important.
01:51We can't fall away.
01:53I think the captaincy has got to be very shrewd to ensure that we make the necessary changes
01:58at the right time and do not maybe over bowl any set of bowlers.
02:05Captain Craig Bratwaite's highest score in his last nine test innings was 43.
02:10As such, Dr. Pereira is also concerned about the form of the 32-year-old Barbadian.
02:15The form of the West Indies captain is no doubt a worry to West Indies supporters and
02:20Bratwaite will be very much aware that his role is very important along with Louis in
02:30producing a decent start.
02:33Bratwaite is someone who knows himself very well.
02:38He cannot be over attacking yet he has to be positive and at least try and get the ball
02:46away.
02:47Against South Africa in the two tests, the West Indies could not reach 250 although there
02:52was the drawn Trinidad test in which they posted 201 for 5 in the second innings.
02:57And against Bangladesh, there was one score in excess of 400 while the other three innings
03:02produced under 200.
03:04So what must the West Indies do in Pakistan?
03:07It's important that they put scores on the board, they bat slowly, but they've got four
03:16innings in the two test matches and they must put scores on the board.
03:22That will keep their chances alive.
03:25The discipline of the bowling is very, very important in order to restrict the Pakistan
03:34scoring too quickly.
03:36A drawn series in Pakistan is almost a victory to this West Indies side.
03:42The opening test bowls off on January 17th starting at 1.30am TT time.
