26:05I have the pleasure of representing Team Sterling to you today.
26:12So you've got two minutes, erm, and I'm going to be covering that in my bit.
26:15So what I want you to do is actually specifically about the video and why we created the video we did and what the vision behind it was.
26:21First to face the panel, Ricky and grandeur.
26:38Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
26:40My name's Ricky Martin and I have the pleasure of sitting here in front of Team Sterling and would like to take you on a journey today.
26:45So our vision is to ultimately make people aware that English sparkling wine is a quality product.
26:51So what we're trying to do is make sure that we stay true to the heritage as well as the quality on English sparkling wine and again to educate the consumer.
26:58So our themes are quality, quality and quality.
27:02We want that message to be crystal clear to people.
27:05So just to kind of give you an idea on our website here, the colours we're really going for is gold, black and white.
27:12These are the colours which are synonymous particularly of luxury bottles, particularly champagnes, and we're trying to run with that theme.
27:18And one thing which is extremely important for us to do is to look at the international recognition that English sparkling wine has.
27:24And to reinforce that, we have used the multiple international award challenge winner.
27:29To give you an idea about what we're trying to do on the marketing of it, we have got a quiz of the week on here.
27:33And it encourages them to go through the website and to enter into the prize.
27:37To do so, they'd need to put an email address in there.
27:39And the idea of that is we can build up our own database of people who are interested in the English sparkling wine.
27:45In the bottom corner here, there are a number of social networking emblems where people can connect with one another.
27:50The one unusual one is this wine glass.
27:52What we'd like that to be is an English sparkling wine forum so that consumers who are interested in the English sparkling wine can talk to one another.
28:00If we can educate them about it, I think more and more people will run with English sparkling wine.
28:05Something that we haven't yet mentioned is our logo. Our logo is a rose in the shape of a champagne glass.
28:12And that contacts back to, again, English rose, English icon, and bringing you to understand the quality and luxury of this product.
28:19Given you've mentioned quality, innumerable on time is probably the word you've used most.
28:23How does the strapline, less fizz, more sparkle, fit into that?
28:26I really want to differentiate on a subliminal level something away from fizz that you can immediately associate with English sparkling wine.
28:33So the less fizz, more sparkle is less fizz, i.e. less champagne, more sparkle, more English wine.
28:38I like it. I think it's good. I think it's got mileage.
28:40What I'd like to do is just take you onto our homepage and there'll be a 30-second video which will pull up immediately.
28:45So I'll let you have a look at that and then I'll start talking again.

29:31Next, making the case for ESW, Tom.
29:43Without further ado, I'd like to introduce you to our concept and how we envisage the future of English sparkling wine developing into what it should be, which is the world's leading sparkling wine.
29:52What we try to do is incorporate the Englishness within our logo. We try to keep it, you know, quite simple and quite elegant.
29:58Our idea, in essence, was to encourage English sparkling wine producers out there at the moment to apply our logo in a label that would fit in this space.
30:06For us, what this would be able to do is allow consumers to instantly recognise when they see an English sparkling wine.
30:13Now, our online video, which is obviously going to further enhance our concepts and promote English sparkling wines.
30:21English sparkling wines achieve what no other country has, eight international awards in nine years.
30:28Produced with English pride and passion.
30:32Why look further for excellence?
30:35Now easily recognised by our ESW logo.
30:39Virtually every video around sparkling wine always has a group of people, always with an overflowing bottle, always filling up glasses.
30:45Do you think that really reflects the Englishness of what you're asked to do?
30:48The people were very English, the setting was very English, you know, and the occasion was very English, you know, it was nice.
30:55We were trying to get away from the fact that you need a celebration to drink English sparkling wine and it was just an occasion, just a gathering really, just an English gathering.

31:06I was behind this on the design on the site.
31:09Availability was actually key in our brief, so it's something we really want to focus on, making sure people know where to buy these wines.
31:15Users can click on where to buy and they'll find a list of all the stockists they have either online or locally, so it's very easy for them to find the wine and where to buy it.
31:24On your stockists page, there's a huge problem with getting stockists to interact with your website to actually say what wines are in stock.
31:33If it isn't up to date, you know, they can call that stock.
31:35Having information that's not up to date and accurate is even actually more annoying to the consumer than helpful.
31:46Both pitches complete, the panel calls the boss.
31:50Perhaps you can tell me what you thought of the overall campaign.
31:55As a website and as a message, it was more sales-centric rather than following the brief, which was specifically seeking a targeted multimedia campaign to develop awareness.
32:06The team had a really good end-to-end process actually, so we feel that the campaign has a real chance of sticking with some finesse.
32:15They created something very well in the given time. They were off-key, I think.
32:20That's interesting.
32:22Well, the video wasn't at all aspirational.
32:24The execution of the idea overtook, actually, the purpose of the advert in the first place.
32:28The one thing that did strike us was that, fundamentally, they did stick better to the original marketing brief.

34:01So, a rather interesting task to design and come up with a marketing campaign to raise awareness for English sparkling wine.
34:11So, I'm going to start with Team Phoenix, first of all.
34:14And I understand that, Tom, because of your association with wine, that you've taken up and become the project manager again, yeah?

34:24One week after another.
34:25Yeah.
34:25So, that's brave to say the least, yeah.
34:28So, overall, good team leader, performance, you think?

34:31I think Tom actually leads with quite a lot of strategy in mind, which I was quite impressed with.
34:35I enjoyed working for Tom.
34:36I think he did really well.
34:37So, tell me what you did with your teams.
34:39First, they split our team into two groups.
34:41One group was going to visit an English sparkling wine producer.

34:46I decided to take myself and Adam there.

34:50Yeah, we did, yeah.

34:52It was gorgeous.
34:53Better than champagne.

34:55What were you ever to do?
34:56Then we went to the graphic design company, which helped us design a logo and tagline.
35:02And then we planned the storyboards for the next day and the website, which would be designed.
35:07While these lot were swanning around down at the vineyard, yeah?
35:10Do you feel that it was right to just leave them to it and you being the team leader and not being there?
35:15I think, if you ask Nick and Jade, I think they kind of got the ideas I was trying to get across to them early on as well.
35:20So, I don't think you felt like you were kind of adrift from us at all.
35:22So, we got you as the wine expert.
35:24Yeah.
35:25We got Nick as the online expert, so to speak.
35:28Jade, obviously.
35:29Jade as the marketing person.

35:34What was your actual theme then?
35:37I mean, our focus was to be outside the box.
35:39So, the idea was to create a logo and a slogan, which obviously represented quality, represented England, represented what they were doing.
35:45But also, something that we could use on the bottles to quickly identify to customers on the shelves.
35:50Then tell me about who created the website.
35:53I did.
35:53Let's have a look at it, shall we?

35:57What we wanted to do is to give users a sense that it is high quality of English heritage, hence all the pictures in the background, which would change and fade in and out.

36:07I mean, the background images would obviously change in the live version, so it would look quite smart.

36:55So far, what I've gleaned from what I can see from these is that this is more of a kind of sales pitch.
37:02It's the awareness thing that's missing to me, that it's the not so much of a story of why you should buy this over and above the traditional French champagne.

37:31I see this very much as an online campaign, a marketing campaign.
37:35I also saw the competition as being extremely good, and I wanted to show that I'll stand up to good competition.

37:47Well, on the first day, Jenna and I went to the vineyard, the history...

38:06Well, the next step is Gabby and Steve need to start putting the backbone into the website, put the structure in place, get an idea of our strap line, something which will connect the consumer with the industry.
38:14So, on the second day, Gabby very much stayed on the website, I brought the knowledge from the vineyard into the website, and Stephen and Jenna went forward on the creation of our advert.
38:22What was your going forward strategy then after that?
38:25We started brainstorming different ideas.

38:28We came up with a lot of names, but I decided...
38:30Yeah, we threw in Cert as an option, C-E-R-T. We wanted to keep it quite simple at the carver, but...

40:02We were massively the underdogs, but our passion perhaps camouflaged our lack of expertise.
40:07I'm hoping that, and I do believe that the industry experts did enjoy our passion.

40:17They did say that your sterling started off reasonably okay, inasmuch as it looked like
40:26they were on track a bit.
40:30They said that Phoenix put a bit boring type of website there.
40:38More sales-orientated than rather awareness.

40:43Um, they concluded, and I concluded in the end.
40:54The Phoenix campaign, it didn't do what I asked it to do.
40:59But, I think it's more of what sterling has messed up, uh, that makes you the losing team,

42:45I think our whole campaign fell apart.
42:48We need to look at why we lost it and why a boring campaign was better than our campaign,

46:15but I do feel that the feedback on the website is it said quality and heritage,
46:19and that's what I asked for, and that's what Gabriella produced.

46:57trying to find a wine connoisseur.
46:59He spent a lot of time trying to come up.
