Transcript
00:00Teenager Samantha Dolly continues to set the records in chess.
00:04She became the first female to grab the Southern Chess Club's inaugural Emancipation Day Under-20 crown.
00:10Dolly is fine-tuning her skills for the World Under-16 Olympiad held in Colombia on August 16th.
00:15It's a team event. She was happy for the win.
00:18I felt the performance was actually really good for the fine-tune.
00:22Although I do feel that I would need to have a few tweaks here and there,
00:27I felt that for the first rapid tournament I'm coming back out in, I did really well.
00:34She is the first female to win the Under-20 title from the Southern Chess Club,
00:38which started in 1940, even defeating National Junior Male Champion Tyrese Gill along the way.
00:44Well, it is its first time holding something like this.
00:49So I do feel really happy, but at the same time, I know how there are stronger people ahead of me.
00:56So I want to become strong enough to either draw or beat them.
01:01What were the reactions like when you won?
01:04Well, I think everyone was really supportive and it was like a remarkable thing that a girl won this
01:10because usually it's separated by male and female, well, absolute and female.
01:15But in this case, since that's an open and anyone can play and a woman won, it was really spectacular.
01:24How do you rate this performance compared to your other top achievements?
01:29I think this would be maybe fourth or third on the list of my achievements.
01:35Dolly thanked the sponsors of the event, her coach, Quinn Cabrales, and her father, Mark Dolly, for their support.
01:42A total of 98 participants took part in the competition.
01:46I feel very proud of her.
01:49It's been a combination of constant progress and hard work.
01:54It augurs well for the upcoming trip to Colombia.
02:02I know she's working hard with the other members of the quartet and I wish the team best of luck in Colombia
02:12and I know that they'll make the country proud.
02:14Success runs in the family as her brother, Nicholas Dolly, finished second in the under-12 competition
02:20and he was one of the top recipients in the country for the secondary entrance exam recently.
02:26Sergio Duvore, TV6 Sport.
