She reflected on the experience.
Transcript
00:00National chess player Samantha Dolly is back after competing at the Central
00:04American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador. The under-14 champion finished
00:08the seventh in the competition in a four-way tie on 5.5 points. She was a
00:13point away from getting into the medals.
00:15Alright so how did you feel representing TNT?
00:18I think I felt really well and I felt really happy and excited because
00:22representing Trinidad has always been one of my dreams.
00:25In her first international competition she needed to go through a sharp
00:29learning curve and after another start she quickly learned that she could
00:33compete with the top athletes in the region.
00:36This tournament has shown my
00:38weaknesses but also some strong points and it shows me how I can be as
00:44good as some very strong international opponents. For example I managed to
00:50secure a draw with 1,700 and I was rated 1,500 which is almost 200 points higher
00:57which and just beating them would have been really good as well.
01:02She added that she is even more confident now after earning a draw against a higher ranked opponent.
01:07I think my confidence went up and my and my chess abilities also went up
01:12because after this after CSC my rating online went up as well so I would assume
01:17that's the confidence.
01:19So what's your rating now?
01:20Well it went from 15 to 1,700.
01:23She's hoping to represent TNT at the 2025 Chess Olympiad in Albania and
01:27intends to work on her weaknesses.
01:29The agenda for me is I'm well I'm going to a tournament tomorrow actually
01:33but some of the main tournaments on my mind right now is the National Swiss
01:39that's coming up in about a week or so and later on in about October there will
01:46be the National Secondary Chess competition where I will be representing
01:51St. Augustine Girls High School and last but not least there will be the National
01:57National Chess Championships in January 2nd where if I win when I win I will be
02:05representing Trinidad again in the 2025 CAC edition.
02:09Her father Mark Dolly is proud but he believes that she can go further.
02:14I thought Samantha's performance for her first tournament was excellent.
02:20I think that she narrowly missed out on winning a medal by half a point.
02:28Definitely it augurs well for the future and I think it could only help her to
02:33work on the negative sort of areas and improve those and come back stronger the next year.
02:41Samantha was one of 28 athletes to represent TNT at the Games.
02:45The country earned one silver medal from Ty Humphrey in the under-8 category.
