00:00 Yeah, those two things have been in my mind.
00:01 And I had settled on, OK, I think you need to do more.
00:08 And I'm in that phase.
00:09 So this kind of work, I think, that
00:14 would be involved in this position
00:16 came at that moment when I had already decided,
00:19 yeah, we need to do more.
00:21 During her address at the opening of Parliament
00:24 on Monday, President Christine Kanglu
00:27 expressed hope for greater collaboration
00:30 across the aisle relating to legislative and other measures
00:33 designed to fight crime and urged
00:36 parties to put rivalry aside.
00:39 Today, independent Senator Suniti Maharaj
00:42 suggested this as a way to address the problem.
00:46 Negotiations and the asking people to rise to the occasion,
00:52 I think everybody, every member of Parliament's constituency
00:57 must have this feeling.
00:59 So if you're doing it for your constituency,
01:02 it will rebound to the country.
01:04 If every constituency is focused on the state and the safety
01:09 and security of the people that they represent,
01:12 then we could get it right.
01:13 We could add that up.
01:14 She also shares one of the issues of importance
01:17 to her in her new role.
01:20 The transformation that we need to make
01:24 between the colonial past and the future.
01:28 How do you transform the institutions,
01:32 the culture of the place to create a nation,
01:38 to start with a nation?
01:39 A nation is not just a country.
01:43 And that is independent, self-sustainable,
01:48 viable into the future.
01:51 How do you do that?
01:52 She said it's something that many countries
01:55 in the post-colonial world have been long struggling with.
