00:00Red Sox announcing late in the evening last night that they had acquired a lefty, Stephen Matz.
00:07You just heard Courtney talk about that during trending, and we'll keep you up to date when and if they do anything.
00:13And we will have a chance tomorrow morning at 9 to talk to Krieg Breslow about what they do.
00:20Texter earlier said you left perhaps the greatest trade in Boston history off your list this morning.
00:27And that was Ken for Jackson at the Winnipesaukee Roadshow.
00:34I thought you were going Bill Russell.
00:36A lot of people get angry.
00:38I mean, I don't know the details of Bill Russell.
00:40I wasn't really around.
00:41Some people felt like you slighted D'Lo.
00:44Yeah, Beratek and D'Lo.
00:45That's true for Heathcliff Slocum, a great trade.
00:48But that deal is not as celebrated if the Red Sox don't win the World Series in 2004 and absent the Nomar trade,
00:56which, in hindsight, it's looked at very differently.
01:01That came through.
01:02I remember where I was.
01:03I was in my bedroom.
01:04It came in a half hour after the deadline.
01:06Pete Shepard on the big show broke in with it, and it was shocking.
01:12Legitimately shocking.
01:13Theo Epstein said he couldn't sleep.
01:15He thought he was going to be killed.
01:17I mean, Nomar was everything in this town.
01:20And to trade him and to have the balls to do that as a 31-year-old GM and then win the World Series because of it, you can't keep that off.
01:27Well, I'm just telling you, they are right there.
01:30And anything short of a reasonably good potential No. 2 arm is going to bother me.
01:38Yeah.
01:38Like, I just – I'm going to be very disappointed.
01:42I think a lot of people will because that's the one area – like, if they don't add a bat, I don't think people are tripping about it.
01:50You know, like, bullpen help.
01:52People are not really tripping.
01:53You get – I don't really care about an everyday first baseman.
01:57No.
01:57I mean, I don't mind the platoon over there, and I just – you've got to get yourself another starter, and it's got to be somebody that is reasonably legit.
02:08If they don't do that, I think there are going to be a lot of people that are very disappointed.
02:13And the only way that they can, you know, save a little face is if there is no reasonable starting pitchers that are moved.
02:22That's the only way that they can go, we tried, but there was nobody that moved.
02:27People have already been moving.
02:28No, but reasonable starters.
02:30But I don't think that works because people will always say, well, then you were too conservative.
02:34You had an opportunity.
02:35You have to extend yourself.
02:36I mean, nobody would have said in the moment that you got equal talent back for Nomar and Orlando Cabrera and Doug Mankiewicz, but it worked out.
02:46Right, but that's – it's the same thing with the – with Kyle from Waltham trade, but he was just a regular guy that no one expected.
02:55I'm talking about, like, if a guy like Evaldi, a guy like Joe Ryan that we're talking about, if those guys don't move, then – and you tried.
03:06But there's already been a rumor that the Padres offered you Dylan Cease on a prospect for Jaron Durant.
03:12Okay, and so –
03:13Cease would be a pretty big picture to move, right?
03:15Okay, so then you have to move on that.
03:20If the Padres did offer you that and that is reported as true or the insiders are saying that, then you have to say, all right, we need to move on from Durant to get a legitimate stop.
03:33Well, the Padres appear to be thirsting after Jaron Durant.
03:36All right.
03:36Now, I will say I listen to two people on baseball.
03:39One is Curtis, as you know, and the other is my guy Lou Marloni.
03:42And Lou was social media-ing yesterday, I think it was, on being okay with getting your number two – like, essentially waiting off-season-wise.
03:54Hey, it's Lou.
03:55Off-season-wise, value with Durant and getting your number two in advance of next season.
04:02And then being ready to roll with Crochet and whoever you get for your number two.
04:06Lou seems to be okay with that.
04:08But Lou also said that there's not going to be those impact starters that are going to be moving this year during the trade deadline.
04:17So that's the only – like I said, that's the only thing that you can look at and you go, well, you tried.
04:23But if guys – if the Rangers are not willing to trade Evaldi or Minnesota's not willing to trade Joe Ryan, then, you know, you just don't want to add guys because then we go, it's just who's this dude you added?
04:37Yeah.
04:37I mean, why not just improve the team and get out of your comfort zone?
04:42Everybody said in that front office that the vibes were different.
04:45This was a year.
04:45The years of waiting were over.
04:47We're going for it.
04:48Here you are.
04:49You won 10 straight getting into the break.
04:51You struggled a bit, but now you've won 6 of 10 again.
04:53You're entering a point of your schedule where you need these games.
04:57Why wouldn't you add?
04:58The AL is – the American League, we all agree, not good this year.
05:02We don't know what judge is going to be with the Yankees.
05:04Nobody really believes in the Blue Jays in the division.
05:07You know, who's the team that you fear in the American League?
05:11Well, they're going to add, but it's going to be – are you going to add something that people go, that was a good add?
05:18But if there is nobody –
05:20You keep saying if there's nobody –
05:21Right, but this is what Lou said.
05:22No, no, no, but what Curtis is saying, which is accurate, is you can – theoretically, you can make anybody available.
05:29No, you can't.
05:30If Minnesota doesn't want to give up Joe Ryan, then guess what?
05:34There's nothing you can do.
05:35Make an offer they can't refuse.
05:36Right.
05:36So then what's that mean?
05:38If that offer is, okay, we want Roman Anthony, then are you going to do that?
05:45Well, you could talk about the Roman Empire.
05:47No, no, no, but you're saying make an offer you can't refuse.
05:50Right.
05:51Obviously, it's not going to be Roman Anthony.
05:52They have far more people in their farm.
05:54But they might be like, we want this.
05:57That sweatshirt Sam gave Wiggy is paying dividends.
05:59It has nothing to do with –
06:00It's paying great dividends.
06:01No, no, it has nothing to do –
06:02It really is.
06:03No, it has –
06:03You're already defending things they haven't done.
06:05It has nothing to do with the sweatshirt.
06:06Wiggy has a point.
06:08That's all it is.
06:08My point –
06:09How much are you willing to give up on this team that's neck and neck with the Yankees right now
06:14and could actually have a real shot at this to get a second arm?
06:18Let me put it this way, Cordy.
06:19I want them to behave as they did from 2018 to 2003.
06:23That's what I want.
06:23Oh, my God, Curtis.
06:25They're not going to do –
06:26At least my point is is that when you look at where they are and what Lou is saying,
06:31if there's teams that are not willing to give up these type of players and they're trying,
06:37Curtis is – his hatred towards ownership is like, all right, they need to go out and get Joe Ryan.
06:44But the Padres are willing to give you Dylan Cease.
06:47You're just not willing to pay the price.
06:49That is correct.
06:51If the price is Jaron Duran plus a prospect or whatever it is, they don't seem to be willing to do that.
06:56And I'm really sorry, Wiggy.
06:58I want the Red Sox to do what they did.
06:59All over the place.
07:00Curtis – I believe Curtis sent it in the group yesterday.
07:02Yeah, but I'm going to read those.
07:04But the Red Sox, I'm interested in them doing what they did to win four championships.
07:09Stop, Curtis.
07:10Oh, the outrage.
07:11It's the Belichick-Brady stuff.
07:13I look at the Red Sox and I go –
07:15So you don't want them to be championship teams?
07:17No, no.
07:17I want them to go out there and add.
07:18And try.
07:19No, I want them to add.
07:21But if Lou and all the baseball hoddos are telling me that the starting pitchers,
07:27the impact doms are not moving, how can I sit here and criticize the team
07:34when those other teams are not willing to move on from those guys?
07:38Greg, correct me if I'm wrong, Greg.
07:38You brought up one guy that Dylan – what did you say?
07:41Is Dylan Sheets?
07:42Yeah.
07:42Dylan Sheets.
07:43Sheets?
07:43Sheets?
07:43Sheets?
07:43Yeah.
07:44Okay.
07:44Dylan Sheets.
07:45All right.
07:46Greg, can you refresh my memory for me?
07:48Yes, yes.
07:49When the Red Sox moved on from Devers.
07:51Yes.
07:51I believe Wiggy and you guys said now they just have to reinvest in this roster.
07:57Yeah.
07:58So now we're on the day to reinvest, and Wiggy's like, nobody wants to.
08:01It's okay.
08:02No, no.
08:02I said, yes, reinvest.
08:04But if you're telling me there's nobody to reinvest to –
08:07That's not what you said.
08:08Yeah.
08:09I'm –
08:10Wiggy's saying, to go back to the food story, Wiggy is saying you can't go out
08:15and spend on caviar if there's none available in the seafood store.
08:20Right.
08:20How are you supposed to invest in – and then you don't want them to –
08:24Captain Martins.
08:24You don't want them just to invest in –
08:26Great spot.
08:27Awesome.
08:27Regular guys because you're like, oh, well, we need impact plays.
08:31We need – but if there are no impact starter pitches out there,
08:36then where are they supposed to go?
08:39If they get just – if they sign average guys for depth, then you're like,
08:42what are you doing?
08:43So if the baseball hardos always tell me that potentially none of these –
08:50these big name starting pitches are going to be available.
08:54Also, I hate this argument on the Subaru of New England text line.
08:58Looks like it's a text from Connecticut.
09:02They're complaining because Dylan ceases a rental.
09:05Like, who cares?
09:06You can give him a contract extension.
09:07Who cares?
09:07The Red Sox.
09:08You rent the guy and then you extend the guy.
09:10Yeah, it's not that hard.
09:11That's the dumbest argument in the history of arguments is I don't want a rental.
09:16Who cares?
09:17Yeah, there's guys available.
09:18Like, Dylan Cease is clearly available to you.
09:20Sandy Alcantara is another guy that the Red Sox have been sniffing around down in Miami,
09:25according to Sean McAdam.
09:27So, like, there are pitchers available.
09:30It's just are you willing to pay the price?
09:32But – and I don't know a lot about this guy, but luckily, you know,
09:35I got friends that listen to this show.
09:37And one of my good friends said –
09:39Who was it?
09:39My boy Joey, who's the cop.
09:41You met him before from East Boston?
09:42Oh, yeah.
09:43Oh, Joey Centulo.
09:44He's a cop.
09:45He said Cease is 3-10 with a 4.8 ERA.
09:49Yeah.
09:50So, I mean –
09:51This season, yes.
09:52Yeah.
09:52But we just talked about a guy this season who was struggling,
09:56and you're like, oh, I don't want him.
09:58Who?
09:59Who was the guy, Curtis, you were talking about that batting average or something?
10:03Oh, the guy they traded, Matz.
10:05But he's got a –
10:05Yeah, yeah, he's talking about Matz.
10:06Yeah, Matz.
10:07He was like, yeah, Matz, he always stinks.
10:09So, it's like, well –
10:10I mean, Matz isn't a number two pitcher, Wiggy.
10:11No, no, no.
10:12There's a difference.
10:12He's a lefty specialist.
10:13No, I understand that.
10:14But if Cease is struggling –
10:16Kent is also a lefty specialist.
10:18What's to say he's going to get here and he's going to be good?
10:20Well, like, last year he won 14 games.
10:22This isn't a guy who's like –
10:24I get that, but Jaron Duran was in MVP voting last year,
10:30and this year he's not playing particularly well.
10:33And I'm not saying Cease –
10:34Oh, he's certainly playing great the last month.
10:36Yeah, he is.
10:37But I'm not saying Cease is not the guy.
10:39But you have to make a tough decision if you want to go for it.
10:42And I understand that Cease may not be the guy that you want,
10:45but, like, I'm just –
10:46it's my example of there are pitchers out there for you to go and acquire
10:50if the Red Sox are willing to pay the price.
10:52And they should be.
10:53I'm willing to bet you dollars to donuts, and I love donuts,
10:57that the Red Sox will acquire a starting pitcher.
11:03I am – the more I think about it, the less I believe in it.
11:06All right.
11:09Why?
11:10I just – I don't think they're going to do anything.
11:11I just – I'm expecting disappointment, Greg.
11:14Well, you're buying the spin then that there's just nobody who's really good available.
11:19No, not at all.
11:20I think there's plenty of guys available.
11:21I just think the Red Sox aren't going to deal what's necessary to get a really good player.
11:26No, no, no.
11:26But they're going to get one of those guys that you brought up.
11:28Cease, you brought up.
11:29Are they?
11:30Are you sure about that?
11:31I'm willing to bet that they sign one of those guys.
11:35And if they don't, tomorrow morning, at the Tipsy Seagull, you better rip the crap out of them.
11:39No, and if they do, I don't want – I don't want to hear you go, well, they just –
11:42I'll admit I was wrong.
11:43I have no problem with that.
11:44No, I don't want to hear you go, well, they signed this guy.
11:46He's not very good.
11:47No, I –
11:47Because his ERA is not good.
11:48If they trade for a legitimate guy, I would be happy to admit that I'm wrong.
11:52But I just – at this point, I feel like that's not going to happen.
11:54And so, wait –
11:55Curtis, answer a quick New Hampshire text for you.
11:58Okay.
11:58Would you give up Jaron Duran for Dylan Cease?
12:00Yes.
12:01You would?
12:02Yeah.
12:02Interesting.
12:03But I also know how the – if you get a – if Cease can turn it around and he is
12:09your number two starter after Crochet who's going – the other reason you need pitching
12:14depth in the starters is that they're already pushing Crochet back to Monday or Tuesday.
12:18But that might be because they think they have their eyes set on a number two coming in.
12:23But if they thought – that sounds oddly personal.
12:27They thought that – Crochet is a better pitcher than whoever they'll acquire, so why wouldn't
12:32they play him Saturday?
12:33They're doing that because that they want to – they're going to save him, hopefully,
12:37for a playoff run.
12:37Yeah.
12:38And the other thing is, you have the potential this fall to own the city.
12:44The Yankees are not a great team.
12:46You're, what, 5-1 against them this year without improving your roster?
12:49You have an opportunity here.
12:51And I – it would be incredibly demoralizing, I think, to a lot of fans of this team that
12:58saw the Cohiba, the Bregman deal, that tolerated the Devers trade, which appears to be in
13:03their favor, and if they don't reinvest with actual players that can help.
13:07And they're not going to accept the party line from Wiggy that there was just no one
13:11available.
13:12Because there are always people available if you have the right offer.
13:14Deadline coming in six.
13:16You can –
