MLB Trade Deadline is approaching... Who should the Red Sox KEEP?
Who do you believe the Red Sox should TRADE? Curtis: "I would not trade Contreras"
Transcript
00:00And it will be somewhat interesting tomorrow based on what Craig Breslow said yesterday with Tim Healy
00:08because he was asked about selling players, and his response was,
00:14we're still not at a point where that decision is clear.
00:19Oh, good.
00:19Because like I said, we've got a lot of baseball games to play between now and then,
00:25and we're going to do everything we can to get the ship righted for 2026.
00:32Good morning.
00:33Tim Healy has been on all sides of the coin here, by the way.
00:37He had the story basically burying Breslow.
00:40Now he's talking to him, and he says that, you know, we're not done.
00:44I don't.
00:44I mean.
00:45That is diametrically opposed to what Sam Kennedy said on this very show almost two weeks ago,
00:52two weeks to the day where he said the pivot begins in a couple weeks.
00:56Did he not give us a time?
00:57He did say that.
00:58Sure did.
00:58Did he give us a timetable?
00:59That's now.
01:00Yeah.
01:01We are in straight pivot mode.
01:03You know, I'm talking.
01:04Breslow's not, though, because he's trying to hang on to his job.
01:07So that's going to be an issue.
01:09Like, this is the issue when it comes to the direction of the franchise going forward.
01:15Right.
01:15But do you think John Henry's going to allow that because, and Curtis, you're the baseball guy.
01:19I am.
01:20If you trade, let's say you trade a guy like Chapman, that's money off the books for Henry,
01:25correct?
01:26Yep.
01:26Okay.
01:27So Henry.
01:28I mean, at this point, you're looking at Chapman at the trade deadline.
01:32I think he's making $10 million.
01:33So you're looking at about $3 to $4 million.
01:35Right.
01:35But I'm saying if you've got a few guys that you're potentially going to move on.
01:38Sonny Gray will save money.
01:39Right.
01:39So I don't think.
01:40Well, I think you should use Wilson Contreras as a better example.
01:44Like, that's a guy who I would like to see them hang on to.
01:46Seems happy here.
01:48Has been very productive.
01:50Um, is you got another, do you have another year or two years of control on him?
01:55I think it's one year.
01:56But Tony Gray, this is it.
01:57No, no, no.
01:57Contreras.
01:58I just said Wilson Contreras.
01:59Oh, Contreras.
02:00I would keep.
02:00I would not trade Contreras.
02:01So that's the problem though, is that Breslow is going to be, you know, he's going to be
02:07spending like a drunk sailor because he's trying to hang on to his job and he's not going to
02:12do what's best for the franchise.
02:14He's going to do what's best for himself.
02:17Yeah.
02:18You'll have two, you'll have two years of Contreras.
02:20We are.
02:21You'll have one more and then a club option.
02:23He's 30.
02:24He'll be 35 years old at 17 million and then 20 million.
02:28So I guess the question becomes the next year of, you know, one of the two years he'll
02:34have left.
02:34What's that season look like?
02:36Right.
02:37Yeah.
02:37Are you going to even have a season?
02:39And then how does that work out?
02:40Let's say, but, but again, Breslow is going to, if he is trying to save his job and he
02:47believes that the ship can still be righted, I feel like the ship is, you got Jack and,
02:53and, uh, Rose on a floating on a, uh, on a, on a doorway somewhere in the middle of
02:58the ICCs, but fine.
03:00I'll never let go.
03:01Um, and so, um, he is then going to be out trying to find some right hand bat and willing
03:08to part with what, whatever they, they want to get a right handed bat at deadline time.
03:14Like, it's just, no, I don't believe that he just told you that.
03:19No, but I, I, I'm saying the organization, I don't believe the organization.
03:23It looks at it and goes, there's a chance.
03:26So I think the organization, like when we talk to Sam Kennedy is in the mode of pivot and
03:32we're selling because there's no, I don't care what Bresbot is saying.
03:36There's no way the organization looks at it and goes, all right, there's a chance we can
03:41maybe make a run and do some things.
03:43If we add a piece, I think the organization is that let's sell off what we can get.
03:48We'll, you know, we'll limit payroll the best way we can.
03:51It might not be a lot.
03:53And then what are we going to be looking for potentially after next year, if there's a lockout?
03:58So if you've got a guy like Wilson Contreras, why hold on to him?
04:02If he can get you a lot back for the future, when, you know, you might only have him for
04:07one more year and you're not going to give him a new contract because he's 35 years old.
04:11I do wonder though, what you're really going to be able to get at this deadline for a guy
04:15like Contreras.
04:16If the only benefit is that he's on this deal for a couple of years and there's not
04:19going to be baseball next year.
04:20Like I get the Chapman thing.
04:22Obviously, if he's got the quad or hammy that's bothering him, that's a problem.
04:25Which he clearly does based on the other night.
04:28Which is why I said it a month ago.
04:29You trade him now.
04:30Yeah.
04:31But you, I mean, that's somebody that, that will be of interest because of this season.
04:36Right.
04:37I think the long-term guys.
04:39I mean, Jaron Duran is not, I don't think you're going to get much for Duran.
04:42Do you think you're going to get much for Duran?
04:44I think he just ran into the wall again.
04:46But Contreras, you will have a team that goes, all right, we need another bat.
04:51Right-handed bat that can get us over the hump this year of potentially winning a World Series.
04:55And so he could be one of those guys that teams would be willing to give you a lot for
05:00because I think the teams that are in the hunt are focused on winning this year.
05:05And if we got to get a rental, so be it because we might not have baseball next year.
05:10So somebody says, Greg, that's ridiculous.
05:11You don't think ownership will step in and say, what are you doing?
05:15That's so stupid.
05:16Okay.
05:16Then why is he here?
05:18Then exactly.
05:19What is the point of him being here?
05:21If he's not, if he's not running it, what is the point of Craig Breslow still hanging around?
05:26Because he takes all the slings and arrows.
05:28He doesn't though.
05:29No, he does.
05:30When we think about this team with John Henry being around, other than Curtis, I think most
05:35people go, oh, Breslow didn't do this.
05:38Breslow didn't build, get the talent.
05:40Breslow, Breslow, Breslow, Breslow, Breslow.
05:42People react.
05:43People reacted to Alex Cora being fired and said, this is it.
05:46This is great.
05:47Right.
05:48But they put that on.
05:48Hasn't won here.
05:49You said it.
05:50Right.
05:50Hasn't won here in a while.
05:52Right.
05:52So you took the bait.
05:53You took the bait on that.
05:55On what?
05:55And you bid on it.
05:56And you said, yeah, Alex Cora's gone.
05:58This is it.
05:59Yeah.
05:59And it did nothing.
06:00Right.
06:00But now I don't have to worry about Cora being back when the team comes back.
06:05Cora was at the end of his room.
06:06You do have to worry about the fact that you don't have a manager.
06:08No, you'll get another manager.
06:10Yeah.
06:10A dime a dozen.
06:10Why would I want Cora back where the last four years they finished it?
06:16They didn't make the playoff.
06:17And I think two of those years they finished in last place.
06:19What has he done?
06:21Right.
06:21Like, what has he done over the last four or five years?
06:23He hates underachieving teams unless it's three or four years with Jalen and Jason.
06:26No, but I'm the one who said, Jalen and Jason, I want you to break it up and get Giannis.
06:31I'm saying the team has underachieved in the sense of the Celtics.
06:34I don't want Cora back either.
06:36I want Breslow to be on the moon.
06:38Right.
06:39And I want this Sam Kennedy, Theo Epstein, Brian O'Halloran, whomever.
06:44But they had to keep somebody here to take the slings and arrows of the people.
06:50And I think for them it was easier because they know they can move on from Bresbot after the season
06:55than Alex Cora.
06:57And so because Alex Cora was beloved, people loved him.
07:00So get that out the way.
07:02Now when the season's over, everybody's blaming the season on Bresbot.
07:06You get rid of him and you're resetting your general manager and your manager.
07:11And I think that's the reason why they're holding on to Bresbot until the season's over.
07:17And Cora's like, who wanted him?
07:19Nobody wanted him.
07:21I think a lot of fans, when we put the poll up, well, I'm glad he's gone.
07:24Well, I think he got a job offer within hours of being fired.
07:27Something Breslow will not have.
07:28No, no, no.
07:28I agree with you.
07:29I'm saying fans around here in Boston.
07:31Read the Twitch chat.
07:33There's a comment in there that says Alex Cora was not the problem, clearly, with this baseball team.
07:37Well, we put up a poll.
07:39I understand.
07:40People have opinions.
07:41So one person in the Twitch doesn't matter to me because you're not moving the needle.
07:45I'm looking about what the poll says.
07:47And the majority of people.
07:48Exit poll.
07:49And when we put the poll up, the majority of people were like, finally, they made the decision to trade.
07:54Because they probably thought there would be some noticeable difference in the performance of the baseball team without Alex Cora.
07:59And there hasn't been.
08:00The guy didn't want to manage young players.
08:02Running out of breath.
08:04I sound like Maz.
08:06I was like, my God.
08:09You get me so frustrated.
08:11Well, don't defend the guy when he wasn't good.
08:13I mean, he knows baseball.
08:15He knows baseball.
08:15Oh, well, nobody's taking that.
08:17He won your World Series.
08:17Nobody's taking that away from him.
08:19He does know baseball.
08:20He did win you a World Series.
08:21What?
08:22In 2018.
08:23And Wiggy got him fired, if we're being honest.
08:25Yeah, he did.
08:26He doesn't care.
08:28A Missoula one-year championship.
08:30If he doesn't perform well, don't you say get rid of him?
08:32Well, we've said that a lot.
08:34And they stick with him every single time.
08:35I mean, Brad Stevens continues to stick with him.
08:38Well, at least he won you a championship, what, two years ago, three years ago.
08:41Cora hasn't won you.
08:42He didn't win you a championship, what, seven years, eight years?
08:45All right.
08:46Craig Breslow still believes the ship can be righted.
08:49He will talk about that tomorrow on this show.
