00:14Morning, Ray.
00:16Morning, everybody. How's everybody doing? And belated happy birthday, Courtney.
00:22Thank you, Ray. That's so nice.
00:23Well, I am coming to you live from Thunder Bay, Ontario.
00:30Yeah. I'm ashamed of myself because you're in a tournament, you're playing a game this morning,
00:37and I've let myself go, Ray.
00:41Yeah, well, we'll work on that. You're turning a certain age soon, so maybe we could get back into it.
00:48Well, I think you have, I could not believe this this morning because you look fantastic.
00:52You have, you realize you have years on me. You're like, you're older than me, and you've got a game
00:59this morning.
00:59It's impressive.
01:00Yeah, I'm playing three hockey games today.
01:04Oh, wow.
01:04Can you believe that?
01:05Three games today?
01:07Yeah.
01:08Short shifts, 30 seconds, Max Ray.
01:11You got it. Great advice. Great advice for you. You know that.
01:16How many hardos do you run into in these tournaments that want to be able to say that they knocked
01:24Ray Bork into the third row?
01:30I hope not. I was drafted last night by a whole bunch of bankers, so I know I got no
01:36hardos on my team,
01:37but there is one team that are, they're prison guards, so I know, I hope I don't play that game.
01:44It's generally the cops and the firefighters that the ones that, they really are like, this is my chance.
01:51This is my chance to get Ray Bork.
01:52This is my chance.
01:52It was better than him anyway.
01:53When I could tell the story, like, yeah, I went, I beat Ray Bork in a game before.
01:59This is their opportunity.
02:01Well, listen, I don't know if you got screen and screen and if you were able to watch both the
02:07Pats and the Bruins last night, Ray,
02:09but nice shutout win for the Bruins over Nashville last night.
02:15Yeah, great.
02:17You know, that's such a trap game, and I saw some of the report.
02:22I didn't see much of the game, but I listened to a few of the guys after the game, and
02:29it was such a trap game,
02:30and I think they really addressed, you know, the game against Ottawa.
02:35When they came back with that little mini road trip they had the first part of the season,
02:40then they came back and they really had a stinker coming back home against Ottawa.
02:44I think they really want to guard against that, really got their attention yesterday and went out and played a
02:51great game,
02:52and DiPietro's played great.
02:55He played well on the West Coast.
02:57Every time he's been in there so far, he's been great.
03:00So Sway and their goaltending, that tandem has been amazingly good,
03:05and, you know, in a lot of the games that they've played, they've got off to slow starts where the
03:10goaltending really has made the difference,
03:11and in the one game that they did get off to a good start, they ended up losing to Dallas
03:17in overtime,
03:18but other than that, you know, 8-2-1 start, simply amazing for this club,
03:24and they're not even, you could just see that they're not even playing their best yet,
03:30and finding ways to win like they have is a great sign for the Bruins.
03:34Well, you know, it's early, but they could have one of the better goalie tandems in the NHL here with
03:41these two guys.
03:43Certainly looks like that.
03:45Right.
03:46We're always trying to have a conversation, whether it's in other sports,
03:49like when a team kind of knows who they are, their identity of a team.
03:55In football, we always talk about kind of like after Thanksgiving.
03:59When you get out to a hot start as a hockey team, like when is that point in the season,
04:05like number of games where you go like, okay, this is who we are, we can contend for a Stanley
04:12Cup,
04:13like when does that usually happen for a team?
04:17Well, I think a start like this really makes it exciting for the guys to get to that point maybe
04:25sooner than later.
04:27A lot of times you start the season, you know, you'll give yourself about 20 games to see where you're
04:34at
04:35and maybe some of the major adjustments that you have to make.
04:39Let it be on how you're playing or your personnel.
04:44And so far for the Bruins, you know, both those areas in terms of, yes, they could play better.
04:52I think they know who they are, how they want to play.
04:55This being Marco's second year with his system and pretty much, you know, the same group.
05:02I think they kind of, they're ahead of the game a little bit, especially comparing to last year with how
05:10they want to play
05:10and seem like they're getting to their game a little quicker than they did last year.
05:17And like I said, like 20 game mark, you kind of know what you have to do or what you
05:23have to keep working on
05:24or just continuing to do what you've been doing because you've gotten off to such a great start.
05:30Ray, we haven't talked to you since Zdorov's healthy scratch last Saturday.
05:34It seems to have worked. He's had zero penalty minutes in the game since.
05:38But when it comes to Sturm, how do you balance that with sending a message to a vet and then
05:43losing a vet?
05:44He said he was disappointed when he talked to the Globe after the healthy scratch.
05:50Of course, as a player, you're disappointed.
05:52But as a coach, I think you've got to set a standard and you've got to keep guys accountable.
05:56I think that's the biggest job for a coach is keeping your guys accountable.
06:02You know, Zdorov, I thought, got off to a pretty good start this year.
06:07The first three games played pretty clean in that way.
06:10And after that, he just found himself, you know, in a box, I guess, a little too much in terms
06:19of what Marco thought.
06:21And he just wanted to send a message, and he certainly did.
06:25But I don't think it was by any means that he wasn't going to get back in there.
06:30It's just to get the guys' attention and to say, hey, come on, how many times do we have to
06:35talk about this?
06:36You're too important a player to us to have you in a box for two or three or sometimes four
06:43penalties a game.
06:44Not that that happens every game, but there's a time and place during a game where, you know, yeah,
06:51you could be extra forceful in having your players' backs.
06:57And he's always had the guys' backs.
06:58He's been, you know, that way.
07:00And he's a force.
07:01Like, he's a monster back there, and he's tough to play against.
07:04And he can't, you know, guys that play against him, I'm sure it's not very enjoyable for those guys.
07:09But still, certain times of the game, and the game has certainly changed, though, for a defender to, you know,
07:17I mean, it's a lot tougher to play defense now with all the penalties.
07:22Not that the penalties have changed.
07:24It's just how they call them now.
07:26Back in my day, you could clutch, grab, hook, and maul and do anything pretty much you wanted.
07:33In today's game, you've got to have perfect position pretty much all the time.
07:38If not, you're going to get a hooking, holding, or some kind of call like that.
07:44So I think the message was sent on Marco's side.
07:47I'm sure it was received.
07:48And by how he's played the last few games, hopefully that continues.
07:54Was it hard for you as a captain and a teammate to walk that line when Stevie Casper benched Cam
08:04and Kevin Stevens?
08:07Very hard.
08:08One of the hardest things I had to go through.
08:10So, yeah, it's not fun when you have a teammate and an important player, you know, go through something like
08:19that.
08:19So that's why you've got to pick people up and just be there for them.
08:23So, you know, hopefully this is it.
08:28Yeah.
08:29Right.
08:30Oh, good.
08:30We can get time for one more.
08:31No, right.
08:32Are you going to ask him to take us inside the helmet?
08:35It's a little bit of that.
08:37But we always talk about a guy's expectation.
08:39And I think one guy that we look for, you know, somebody that you could talk to at that level
08:44as a defenseman is Charlie McAvoy.
08:47And, you know, the ability that he's starting to continue to transition and becoming more of that offensive-minded defenseman.
08:53What is, like, the biggest thing when you are, like, trying to be more offensive-minded as a defenseman that
09:00you really have to focus on?
09:03I think it's not being reckless.
09:05I think he has a pretty good handle on it.
09:07It's picking your spots, reading the play, jumping into the holes, making sure that you're supporting close enough to give
09:16yourself to do that.
09:17But, you know, once you make that great pass out of your zone, I mean, it's not over with.
09:23You've got to get on your horse and stay close enough, gap up enough, where, you know, pass that or
09:30one of the fours have the puck.
09:32You know, they pull up.
09:33All of a sudden, a hole kind of pops open, and you just jump into it.
09:37And I think he does a pretty good job of that.
09:39It's great to have him back, by the way.
09:42I saw him with one of the big hits last night, and the energy that he brings in every game,
09:48what a blessing to have him back.
09:50But I think Charlie has done a great job.
09:53I think where, for him, I think the power play where, you know, he takes – I'd like to see
09:59him take charge a little more on the power play.
10:01I know we talked about establishing a shot.
10:05I think he – him, Geeky, and Pasta, all three of them a lot of times pass up on shots
10:12that I think would really open up stuff for them on the power play.
10:18The power play's been, you know, pretty good in terms of scoring timely goals other than the Dallas game.
10:27But I think all three of those guys, in terms of passing shots, I'd like to see them shoot more.
10:32But I think Charlie just keeps growing.
10:36His offensive game just keeps growing every year, and that's with the confidence.
10:40And he's such a talented and a great skater that there's – you know, there's a lot in there with
10:49Charlie.
10:50So that's why we're always looking for more.
10:52So I think he wants more as well.
10:55So hopefully that continues to happen.
10:58All right, Ray.
10:58Good luck in this tournament trip to Tim Hortons for coffee this morning?
11:06No, I think just the hotel coffee here did the job.
11:11So I'm off to the rink.
11:13Where would you rank Tim Hortons and Duncans?
11:20To be honest, I like Dunc's a touch better.
11:25But, you know, Timmy's here is – it's the Dunkin' Donuts of Canada.
11:32But I'll hit Tim Hortons probably later today.
11:37All right.
11:38Well, we will talk to you again next week.
11:40Go get him, Ray.
11:41Thanks, guys.
11:42Okay.
11:42Go good one.
11:43There he is, the great Ray Bork, and the news – what?
11:46I just – he's just so joyful.
11:49Like, his little accent –
11:51He's a fantastic man.
11:51Like, the way he talks, everything about him, I just – I'm obsessed.
11:56Has he –
11:56Obsessed?
11:57No, in a weird way.
11:58Has he moved up ahead of Razor on your list of attractive Boston Bruins athletes?
12:04I mean, like – I love them all.
12:08Right, right, right.
12:09Ray's insight is crazy, though.
12:11No, but, like, just the way in which he communicates with everybody.
12:14Like, he's Ray Bork.
12:15That's what I'm saying.
12:16And he doesn't take himself like that.
12:18That's what I'm saying, Courtney.
12:19No, I know.
12:19I know.
12:19And the insight, like, when he talked about, like, jumping up into the plate,
12:23looking for gaps, like, he gets into that.
12:24We always talk about Brian Horan giving you kind of, like, the X's and O's
12:28and walking through that stuff.
12:29But to get it from Ray Bork, it's like, man.
12:32Greg, who's the captain when he's on the show?
12:34We know you're the captain of the show, but when Ray's on, who's the captain?
12:38Yeah, Ray's always good to see.
12:40Yeah, but wouldn't Greg be, like, the assistant captain?
12:42Because, like, he's besties with Veritek.
12:45Well, I mean, you know, I don't know if he's besties with me.
12:49I mean, I consider him to be a bestie, but sometimes that can be misleading.
12:52Yeah, sometimes street only goes one way.
12:54That was sort of the Edelman effect.
12:57We guess it was.
12:58You never know.
13:00You can think you're effing with somebody, as Wiggy would say,
13:02but you never know if the other is effing with you.
13:04Effing with you.
13:05It's like JT was like, man, I'm effing with you.
13:08I didn't know that, JB.
13:10In, like, just north of Masshole's emergency top five Cocoa Crushes,
13:14like, it's not a crush I have, it's a respect.
13:16Who do they have on there?
13:17I don't know.
13:17They just presented the question.
13:19Charlie Baker.
13:20I feel the same way about Ray that I do, like,
13:22when we have Dante Skarnackia on.
13:24Like, the way they both talk.
13:26I just love it.
13:27You did think Charlie Baker was hot.
13:29Oh, my God.
13:30It's so inappropriate.
13:32These are married men.
13:33Seems like you like a sugar daddy, though.
13:35Generally an older man.
13:37You do love that.
13:37Charlie Baker has beautiful eyes, and I've always said that.
13:40And I have all the respect in the world for his wife.
13:43His wife, I've never looked.
13:44I don't objectify people like that.
13:47We're sitting at the radio telephone.
13:50The governor of the state sits down, and Greg immediately goes,
13:53Courtney, you have a crush on Charlie Baker.
13:57I know.
13:57In front of him.
13:58And he's, like, chuckling.
13:59He was a good sport, but I got it.
14:01So, Charlie Baker, Ray Bork, Razor.
14:05Skarnackia.
14:06That's just saying.
14:07I do love Dante Skarnackia.
14:10Really?
14:11Rabel.
14:12Oh, yeah.
14:13Yeah.
14:15I can't.
14:16You just said at one point, Mike, Rabel was very handsome.
14:19Yeah.
14:19I think.
14:20Yes.
14:21I have eyes, and he's a very handsome individual.
14:24You compare him to the Incredible Hulk, I believe it was.
14:26That was not in a.
14:28That was in the way in which he reacts to things.
14:31It had nothing to do with.
14:32That was his comic book doppelganger.
