00:00Right, it is Rich, Ken, and Ted here on 93.7 WEEI,
00:03and we are lucky enough to have in studio
00:06top-tier Terp, Justin Turpin for WEEI.com.
00:10Yes, you...
00:11No, I was talking about number one. He's top-tier.
00:12Oh, he's the top-tier. He's number one, without question.
00:15And, Terp, you've got some great stuff at WEEI.com right now.
00:18Let me just start with this.
00:19First of all, we were talking about how
00:21I loved this game last night, despite the Patriots losing.
00:23Great for Thursday night.
00:25For Thursday night, it was fantastic.
00:27I'm going to ask you the same question
00:28to start you off with this.
00:30The same question that I asked Ted and that I asked Ken.
00:33If you could pick the number one reason
00:35why you believe the Patriots lost last night.
00:38And I know there's a lot.
00:40I love this question.
00:40What is the number one reason you think they lost?
00:42Oh, it's easy to me. It's the explosive plays.
00:44I mean, Caleb Williams had completions of 58 yards,
00:4737 yards, 26 yards, 24 yards, 22 yards,
00:51and 3 of 21 yards.
00:52They had 405 yards of total offense.
00:54It was the most ever allowed by the Patriots.
00:57That's how you lost the game.
00:58And what did the defense do wrong?
01:00Because the defense has been so good lately,
01:03and I mean, surprisingly so.
01:04I think we've all been very pleased with how things have turned out.
01:08I don't think anybody expected the beginning of the season,
01:09but last night, you're right.
01:11I mean, we were talking, too, about the yak.
01:14It must have been out of control,
01:15because it seemed like as soon as any receiver for the Bears
01:17caught a ball, they were wide open,
01:19and they were able to get some yards out of them.
01:20There were a lot of defensive breakdowns as well.
01:22Like, think of the Luther Burden one.
01:24The missed tackles was really bad.
01:26I think PFF had them at 16 missed tackles last night.
01:28I think they updated that to 17.
01:30I didn't look back yet.
01:31I should have looked back.
01:32I think I saw it online.
01:33They updated, added one more on there.
01:35That was their most missed tackles since the Super Bowl of last year.
01:38So when you're missing tackles like that,
01:39and also the third downs jumped out to me.
01:41I think people are going to look at the third down efficiency
01:43and say, well, they only converted, what, four times, three times?
01:47But how many of them were on third and 17 or third and long,
01:51these third and 11s where they couldn't get off the field?
01:53Yeah, four of 12 on third down.
01:53Four of 12, and they were two and two on fourth down.
01:55So that was also part of it.
01:56And in the fourth quarter, they just didn't have the football.
01:59Chicago stayed on the field the entire time,
02:01really drained the clock in the fourth quarter
02:02because the Patriots couldn't get a stop.
02:04Okay, let's go red zone pick for Drake.
02:06I agree it's not.
02:07I wouldn't put Drake as my number one culprit,
02:09but I do think I said turnover margin
02:11because they didn't get any takeaways,
02:12but you lay out a great theory, Terp,
02:15that it's really the defense and the big plays allowed.
02:17But obviously the pick was big.
02:18Do you see any common threads between this red zone pick
02:21and his other red zone pick?
02:22I don't because I don't think he was forcing this one.
02:23The throw was there.
02:24He just didn't put enough under it.
02:26To me, it looked like Raritan was open,
02:28but it is kind of worrisome with these turnovers in the red zone.
02:31He has three already in the red zone this year,
02:33and four of his eight have come in opponent's territory.
02:35You cannot have that.
02:36You cannot be giving the ball away on the plus side of the field,
02:39and too often that's been the case with him.
02:40So I do kind of put it on there because, I mean,
02:43it's not the reason they lost.
02:44In fact, I thought Rabel hit it on the head after the game
02:46where he said Drake may kept them in the game,
02:48and that's 100% right.
02:49Like, they would not have been in that game if not for Drake May.
02:51But when you turn the ball over in the red zone,
02:54a game that you lose by six, you can't just look past that.
02:58So, Ted, I want to ask you, too,
03:00because we were talking earlier about how you had –
03:03I mean, A.J. Brown is somebody that we're all looking at,
03:06and we're trying to gauge, like,
03:07how worried are you after this game?
03:09Ted, you were at a five from zero to ten,
03:13and a five on the worry scale.
03:15Once again, just kind of –
03:17With A.J. Brown.
03:18With A.J. Brown.
03:20Like, when you made that number,
03:23is that because you feel that, man,
03:25this is three games in a row now where,
03:27including the playoffs from last year before he played –
03:30I'm not going to count, obviously, the Seattle game –
03:32where it's been disappointing.
03:34And are you worried that he might be locked into that now?
03:39I'm going to give my answer,
03:40and then I want to hear Terp's answer on this.
03:42I have a five because normally last week I was more at a one or two.
03:49But I'm concerned because there's just something in his body language
03:54that scares me to where I just –
03:56and I didn't see anything in training camp.
03:58I don't know, like, when you watch –
04:01compare him to Steph Diggs last year.
04:03Did it feel like Steph Diggs wanted to be here?
04:06Could you see his body language and his words and his interviews
04:09and his actions on the field that told you
04:12this guy was excited to be here and play for the Patriots?
04:17I think yes.
04:18Like, dude, he was the first in line in all the wide receiver drills.
04:21He got the team hyped before that Buffalo game in week five last year.
04:26He could just see the energy and the body language told me
04:31that he's really fully engaged.
04:34I don't know if it's – I haven't watched enough of A.J. Brown,
04:36but there's something in his body language that has me nervous
04:39about where his mental state is right now.
04:42And so that's why I'm worried.
04:44What do you think, Terp?
04:45I'm not really worried about that because every time he has the opportunity
04:48to talk about being in New England, he just expresses how happy he is to be here
04:52and how it is his favorite team, and when he was talking about working back
04:56from the rehab process, he was like, it's still a blessing.
04:58Like, I'm a Patriot.
04:59This was the team that I grew up watching.
05:01Like, I'm so happy to be here.
05:02So I don't know if I'm necessarily worried about that,
05:04but obviously what you're getting from him right now is not good enough.
05:07And I think people do forget his impact in week one.
05:10Like, he drew that defensive pass interference on the goal line
05:12that led to their first touchdown, their only touchdown in that game.
05:15Also had a couple big catches on third down.
05:17But obviously when you trade a first-round pick for a guy,
05:20you expect him to be better.
05:21And when you're looking at the production of the receivers as a whole,
05:24Drake May had 321 passing yards last night.
05:27The receivers accounted for 87 of them.
05:29That's 27% of a total.
05:31You cannot have that.
05:32And when you trade a first-round pick, and if you want to include the fifth,
05:34go for it, and go get a guy like A.J. Brown,
05:36the expectation is that he elevates that room.
05:39And so far, injury or not, he has not been able to do that.
05:42Can I jump in real quick?
05:44Drake, that's such a terp answer right there because when we ask him
05:49about Jason Tatum, he's going to say, well, his words told you.
05:52He doesn't, you know, he didn't know, right?
05:54But his, you know, it's the body language terp.
05:57It's the words.
05:58What is it?
05:59The actions speak louder than words.
06:00That's why it's tier one terp.
06:01He's down watching the body language.
06:03I'm watching the body language.
06:04I'm watching the words.
06:05We got all of it on there.
06:06I will say it is kind of like the body language thing is interesting too
06:08because it's like I really haven't looked back enough at last night,
06:12but to me last night, like it felt like he wasn't really getting as open
06:15as he was when he came back against the Jets.
06:17Like when he came back against the Jets, it was more,
06:19he was just dropping passes.
06:20Yeah.
06:20And it was kind of encouraging that he was getting open
06:22and creating that separation, although he wasn't making the play.
06:24I haven't looked back enough from last night to really kind of
06:29definitively say like what it was,
06:30but I am wondering how much the short week impacted him
06:33because I think the short week was very obvious,
06:36especially in the beginning of the game,
06:37like the conservative play calling with Josh McDaniels.
06:39Okay.
06:40To me, a lot of that.
06:41And the fourth quarter.
06:41Here we go.
06:42Back to McDaniels.
06:44Can we talk about that?
06:45Because it's always Roman's fault or McDaniels.
06:46Listen, we were all going around the room.
06:48We said, what's the number one thing that,
06:49the number one reason you think this team lost the game.
06:51And I said, and there's a lot of reasons,
06:53and we've talked about the tackling and everything,
06:55and the penalties.
06:56I think it was Josh McDaniels brain fart of a first quarter.
06:59I just think that you've got one of the most talented quarterbacks
07:02in the league and a guy who can just do everything.
07:06And what are you doing?
07:07You're running the ball into a wall on first down.
07:09You're running into a wall on second down.
07:11And then on third down, you're like, hey, Drake,
07:13the third and eight, the whole stadium knows you're going to pass it.
07:17And then, of course, you know, like, good luck.
07:19And that's the part that drives me crazy is when they finally started
07:22throwing on early downs, they moved the football.
07:24It was just like it took an entire first quarter.
07:26And against a team like Chicago, you know, every possession matters.
07:31And I just think they wasted the entire first quarter
07:34until they were like, man, let's get back to the play calling that,
07:38let's use Drake the way Drake's supposed to be used.
07:41No, you're right.
07:41By the time that they opened up the playbook,
07:43they were already down 10-0.
07:44They ended up losing by six.
07:45So, yeah, it was run, run, pass.
07:48That's pretty much what it was.
07:49And all the passes were going behind the line of scrimmage.
07:51So it's essentially a run anyway.
07:53So I think he did not to take the tangles aside
07:57because I think that is a big part.
07:58Like, when you're looking at this game, I think people are going to look,
08:00well, they still put up 24 points.
08:02Yeah, but they were down 10-0 going into the second quarter.
08:04All right.
08:04And that's how he lost.
