00:00What I'm telling you, as a lifelong Jet fan, I look forward to this time of year in the preseason because that's when expectations are the best, right?
00:10We're going to this is going to be the year we're good.
00:13We usually don't get a hatchet to the back until right around game one, maybe game two of the season.
00:19And you're making it out. I mean, the headlines yesterday were over the top.
00:24And to make matters worse, Aaron Glenn comes out. And in that press conference afterwards, he's like, listen, we haven't he starts selling me on Tyron Taylor.
00:33And we have an outstanding backup. And I'm going, we're screwed.
00:37Like he's already selling everybody on Tyron Taylor. And we this was supposed to be the offense is built around the skill set of Justin Fields.
00:48This is Justin Fields last shot at being a starter in the NFL. He's got all the weapons around him.
00:55He's got a offensive coordinator who was the passing coach in Detroit.
01:00Everything was going to be about Justin Fields. And how does one even dislocated toe, Donnie?
01:07Have you done that before? I'm not even trying to understand how that happens.
01:11No. And I've crushed my toes up against like bedposts, you know, around walls.
01:15Like just saying it right now, like you remember those times in your life when you did that and you hit your, let's just say, pinky toe on that wall.
01:21And, you know, you have three seconds before that unbelievable pain comes in because it's apparent.
01:26I guess he got his toe stepped on. But, you know, a, you know, damaging the toe that bad and getting it dislocated is crazy.
01:32And the Jets put out a tweet yesterday after medical evaluation, quarterback Justin Fields sustained a dislocated toe in his right foot and will be day to day.
01:39Fields avoided serious injury and significant missed time, which means he'll be back sooner than later.
01:44But let's talk about the New York Jets in this season because the interesting part to me about the Jets was you get a new head coach in.
01:50It didn't work with all the high-priced veterans that you had. The Jets never make the playoffs.
01:54So now you get a coach that says, all right, show me what you did in Detroit. Can you rebuild that here?
01:58And he's probably saying, you know what? Let me get my guys in here. Let me build the foundation.
02:02Let's see who actually wants to be a Jet, which included Fields, which is a great spot where Pittsburgh was like, you're going to come here,
02:07but you're never going to be the starter of a Russell Wilson. We don't care what you do.
02:10And you go, at the end of the year, it's like the Steelers are like, hey, Fields, you want to come back?
02:13It's like, no. Like, you showed me your cards. You don't believe in me.
02:16And the Jets are like, you know what? We have a team here that we think could be something.
02:20Can you be our starting quarterback? Come and improve it. Here's a decent paycheck and let's get to work.
02:25It almost feels to me, Joe, like this season was just about, can Justin Fields be your franchise quarterback
02:30and be there long-term? And if he was dropped day one of practice, oh my goodness, that would hit so hard for a Jets fan.
02:37Like, yeah, this is what's supposed to happen to us. But glass being half full, and that's not generally how Jet fans talk
02:44because it's usually doom and gloom with news like this. But if I'm being optimistic here, if, and they expect him to be fine,
02:53they expect him to be back. But the timing of this probably could not be any better.
02:59Why? Because you still have guys like Kirk Cousins or Jameis Winston available. You still have Ty Rottet.
03:08You've got moves. You have options that you could make if you lose your starting quarterback or feel this is going to go into week four, five, or six.
03:16There are options that the Jets have right now and moves they could make that I think won't affect the line one way or the other
03:24with the win total at five and a half. I think the timing of this, knock on wood, he's okay.
03:29But if he's not, it's better now than it would be a week before the season started done.
03:35Now, also, let's play devil's advocate. Let's just say that, you know, Justin Fields was down for the season.
03:40It was a devastating injury. We're going to get to the numbers in just a second, the odds, because he's not going to be down for the season.
03:45But to me, I would have said like the Jets' best case scenario would be to not even get a veteran quarterback.
03:49Just play out the string. Win two to three games. Then you know at the end of the season, Arch Manning's going to be your quarterback.
03:55Whoever comes out, you know, Nussmeyer from LSU or, you know, Lenora Sellers, whoever's going to be the number one overall pick,
04:01you would at least know that because I thought the Jets' season in totality was, let's just see what Justin Fields has.
04:06Let me get my foundation built and then we'll go in the future. If Justin Fields is part of it, great.
04:10If not, would you have thought, though, if he went down, you would have went for a backup quarterback that can actually win football games and be competent?
04:17Or is it just would have been a throwaway season for the Jets?
04:21Their win total is five and a half, people. What are we thinking this was going to be anyway this year with Justin?
04:28It could still be that with Justin Fields being 100 percent healthy, Donnie.
04:33But the reality is this New York Jet team was never going to win based upon Justin Fields' arm.
04:41Or it was always going to be about the defense and how they run the football.
04:46This was never going to be a situation where, Justin, we need you to throw 45, 50 times a game.
04:52And if you don't do that, if our vertical game isn't there, they were going to win on defense.
04:57They're going to go over five and a half wins because they can run the ball and they can stuff everybody.
05:03And if Justin Fields has half a decent season, they're going to win seven to eight games.
