More vacation camps are needed to ensure more children are properly supervised during this extended break from school.

This was the view shared today, by two government ministers following a tour of a sponsored camp in San Fernando.

Our reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh was at the Embacadere ECCE Centre and spoke with the Ministers of Education and Rural Development.
Transcript
00:00A free vacation camp is being hosted at the Embakadere ECCE Center in San Fernando,
00:06sponsored by the community's MP, Education Minister Dr. Michael Dowlat.
00:11He says while on his election campaign, it was an idea pitched by a resident
00:15and he knew it was something he would make happen if elected.
00:20Minister Dowlat says teaching young children key life skills
00:23and keeping them positively engaged, especially during the long July-August break from school,
00:29is very important.
00:31Bring these young people in and bring them up to standard,
00:34but also to give them opportunities to meet and to enjoy and to collaborate
00:39because when you go on to jobs later on,
00:43you really need young people who have those soft skills, good manners,
00:48being able to understand time management, to be here on time,
00:52to follow our schedule, to be able to work in groups,
00:56to be able to solve problems.
00:58They will have little issues.
00:59And from now, if they are able to find reasonable ways
01:05rather than go to violence and all those other things.
01:09He says all material and the venue are being taken care of
01:13through his San Fernando West constituency office.
01:17Ensuring focus is placed on underserved communities like Embakadere
01:21is something he hopes other groups and organizations can come on board to do more of.
01:26Joining him on Monday's door was Rural Development and Local Government Minister Khadija Amin,
01:32who said the MP's initiative is also a great help for parents knowing their children are in a safe and constructive space during the vacation
01:41and at no cost to them.
01:44I am also a minister in the government, but you know what else?
01:48I am a mum and I know that during the July-August vacation, many of you are home from school,
01:56but your parents still have to go to work.
01:59And so this is so nice that you can have a space where you can have fun with your friends.
02:05You can make new friends.
02:07And that is important because we don't want to leave you unsupervised.
02:10We don't want to leave you home alone.
