Parents of students at the Marabella North Secondary School are calling on the Ministry of Education to conduct emergency repairs ahead of the new academic year, now just four days away.

The PTA says the school has been undermaintained for years, and despite holding fundraisers, they have not been able to make the school as comfortable and as safe as they would have liked for their children.

On Wednesday morning, they told our reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh the conditions are unfit for teaching and hope the Minister of Education intervenes.
Transcript
00:00Over 600 students will enter these gates come Monday morning, but what they meet inside, according to the school's parent
00:09-teacher association, is subpar conditions, not conducive to learning.
00:14The chairs are rusted. The classrooms are being painted by us to accommodate these children. The railings at the school
00:25are very rusted. The roof is in a deplorable state, right? We have infestation of pigeons, right? The toilets are
00:36not being upkept.
00:37The grong is so dilapidated, the grass is about high about that. They cannot even decide to register for intercall
00:46right now because they have nowhere to train, the grass is high, you name it.
00:53Overall safety at the Marbella North Secondary School is a concern.
00:59On the head ceilings that are rotted, and I believe it's a hazard to the students, to everybody on the
01:06compound as a matter of fact. And we are saying no, that cannot be. And our children need to come
01:13out in an environment that is safe.
01:14The PTA has hosted fundraisers and lobbied donations from businesses, and so far spent $2,500 on paint, which they've
01:25personally used to paint over 20 classrooms.
01:28But it's not enough, and they're now calling publicly on the Minister of Education to list a school for immediate
01:36repairs.
01:36The Minister, sir, please come and have a walk at Marbella North. Come and see the condition that our school
01:44is in. Come and have a look at the classrooms. We have classrooms that have no table or chairs in
01:51it. And we would like our children to be able to have the best here.
01:56You know, our motors are our best always, and they deserve the best always.
02:01We contacted the Minister of Education, Dr. Michael Dowlat, on the issues raised, but up to news time, did not
02:09receive a response.
