00:00The president of the National Parent Teacher Association, Walter Stewart, says
00:04his association remains a very unsatisfied with the condition of some
00:09of the schools where problems were experienced on the first day of the new
00:12academic year. Mr. Stewart says every year budget is read in Parliament and a
00:17huge sum of money is allocated to the Ministry of Education from the Ministry
00:21of Finance. Yet still, every year before the new school year commences, there are
00:26a number of issues that need to be addressed. He says more money should be
00:31pumped into school repair. We are saying that the government needs to be able to
00:36pump adequate funds into this ministry, especially for school repairs, and I'm
00:41happy that last night in your papermeter that was highlighted. Mr. Stewart said
00:46based on reports he received about Mount Hope Secondary, the school is in dire
00:50need of renovation. The serious part about this is on August 27th, a letter
00:55was penned to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, warning of
01:01certain breaches according to the OSH Act, and of course it pertains to
01:06electrical supplies in the particular schools. The president of the National
01:11Parent Teacher Association says he and his association believe school repairs
01:16is best undertaken during the July-August vacation. Our recommendation
01:21was in the second term of the academic year. That is the ideal time to do all
01:26your procurement, to do all your tendering, do all your scopes of works. So
01:31at the end of the second term, everybody, the ministry, stakeholders, principals,
01:36educators, whoever, all of us are fully aware of the schools to be identified as
01:41critical, crucial schools. Sharla Kesto, TV6 News.
