00:00 After the electrical issue causing interruptions in teaching at the Excel
00:05 Primary School in Beetham Gardens was rectified, tutor president Martin Lumpkin
00:10 tells us there was another incident today. Sparks were emanating from an
00:16 exposed electrical wire. They also smelled smoke emanating from parts of
00:24 the buildings. The principal immediately disengaged the breakers, the main
00:31 breakers, and informed the Ministry of Education. As a precaution, school was
00:39 dismissed. He recounts the January incident which led to a month-long
00:44 disruption of classes. The school was affected by an electrical issue not too
00:54 long ago and as such the electricity was disconnected by TNTEC. During that
01:04 period, teachers were forced to teach under hot and sometimes and unbearable
01:13 conditions for part of the day. With just weeks before the secondary entrance
01:20 examination, anxiety is starting to build. Tutors calling on the Ministry of
01:26 Education to intervene in the quickest possible time and to ensure that there
01:35 is minimal disruption and loss of teaching and learning. In response to our
01:43 query, Education Minister Dr. Nian Gatsby-Daly says quote, "The MOE's
01:48 intervention in rectifying infrastructural issues at schools is
01:52 routine. This was but one of a number of issues reported at schools nationwide
01:58 today. It is not unusual and will be dealt with as they all are." End quote.
