00:00Education Minister Dr. Michael Dowlat says students will not be penalized if they return to school without all of their
00:07required books and supplies.
00:09Because there was a delay and we thank the parents for their patience, no child will be penalized for not
00:18having the full resources.
00:19So we've given the parents enough time to ensure they get their book grants and they can get their books
00:26and their school supplies.
00:27The minister says more than half of the approved book grants have been delivered as of Thursday.
00:33We had six weeks to ensure that we verified all the applications and so this year we have increased the
00:43amount that we've given out.
00:44It's 20,744, an increase over the 20,000 from last year.
00:50He says the payment process also differs depending on whether a parent has a bank account.
00:55Because one of the things is that some of these parents, they don't have bank accounts.
01:00And so the direct deposit occurs almost instantly once we give the banks the authorization.
01:06But the ministry has to cut the checks and then it has to be delivered to the interned at seven
01:11of the offices, of the education offices in Tobago.
01:15We have to send it across to Tobago and then the parents have to take it and they have to
01:20go and cash it.
01:20Principals have been instructed to allow parents the first two weeks of the school term to access the grant and
01:26purchase the necessary books and supplies.
01:29Parents whose applications were unsuccessful should have received notification by today.
