Local Badminton has received a timely technical boost.

As the local Association has enlisted the expertise of UK-based coach Parth Mehta to help prepare the national junior team for the upcoming Pan American Junior Championships.

It's a move the Association hopes will not only deliver podium results but also help raise the profile of the sport across the country.

00:00Trinidad and Tobago has gotten a new badminton coach.
00:04With the assistance of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee, the local badminton association
00:08has been able to acquire the services of UK-based coach Parth Mehta.
00:12Mehta was greeted by Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sport, David Naked.
00:17He will be overseeing the team for the Caribbean Championships and the Pan Am Junior Championships.
00:22I feel like the main objective is to educate the kids, educate the players, because everyone
00:32knows how to play badminton, it's just they were kind of lacking the training, the international
00:37exposure which they wanted and then from that I think they'll have a good chance to get the
00:43medals in the tournaments and everyone is really doing good, everyone is progressing, they are
00:49being physically fed, they are running their brains, they are mentally fed, I think that's
00:54a really good opportunity for them as well.
00:57Mehta, who will be here on a two-month stint, plans to introduce a few new measures to get
01:01the team up to standard.
01:03The new thing which everyone here didn't expect is journaling, which I feel like is really important
01:11for them as well and for the coaches as well, because if they start to journal themselves,
01:18they'll get to know what kind of strengths they have, what kind of weaknesses they have
01:23and then we as a coach can also assist them on that basis.
01:27He was looking over an intense three-hour training session with the other head coach
01:31of the junior team, Nikisha Blake.
01:33My expectations is that they are going to do very well because last year they were able
01:37to secure 46 medals, four of which were triple crown, which is singles, doubles and mixed.
01:44So I'm not expecting anything less from them this year because with the assistance of the
01:49international coach, you know, and myself, you know, we were able to get them to a level
01:54of fitness since we started training.
01:56Members of the badminton fraternity are hoping that Meta's entry will help drive the sport
02:00as they push for a home.
02:02Laki believes it could be part of the conversation moving forward.
02:05Once we get them in order and the association, they come together and they have a vision that
02:13come on to the association and to their membership, then they have a better case to bring to the
02:19honorable prime minister in order to get a permanent home, but I see no reason why not.
02:23Thank you for TV6 Sport.
