00:00today in atlanta georgia no longer all-star festivities in major league baseball but our
00:05fourth and final day of scc media days the four-day extravaganza and event at the site of
00:12the college football hall of fame yesterday drs up there was caitlin abhor for alabama about to
00:19enter year number two at the helm in tuscaloosa inconveniently during scc media days a report
00:26that the former head honcho in teatown nick saban wants to return to coaching after debor and the
00:33tide had a disappointing 2024 missing out on the college football playoff so of course debor was
00:39asked about it here's what the new head coach i guess at alabama had to say well i mean he's you
00:47know one of the greatest to ever do it and so uh he's earned the right to you know do what he wants
00:53i think the best part about uh what what coach saban's doing right now is that he's still involved
00:58in the game you know he's growing the game yeah um he brings uh passion to it uh you know i enjoy
01:05when i get moments uh you know on a saturday morning maybe we got a night game flipping on the tv and
01:11seeing not just him but the whole group uh game day and all the different different ways that they
01:17break things down um you know having a chance to see him once in a while uh you can just feel
01:23that uh you know he still has that uh love for the game um you know i think that you know my sense is
01:31that in that he's uh enjoyed doing it in the capacity he's doing it right now and uh but you
01:36know i think everyone who is close to him and um you know i know from the fan base standpoint uh can't
01:44help but want to you know him to be happy doing whatever he wants to do 74 years old drs that's
01:51nick saban he would turn 75 during this season if he were to turn were to return to coaching that's
01:58not going to happen as we discussed earlier on this week i do think nick saban's been pretty darn
02:04good on tv and i was very skeptical that he would be he used to do this weird thing when he would look
02:10at the camera while he was being interviewed instead of at the person who was standing right
02:14next to him and interviewing him so i didn't know how entertaining nick saban would be he's been pretty
02:20darn good on television i expect him to remain on tv shout out to kaylin deboer for even having to
02:26answer that question yeah like he has that cachet it doesn't always work out and you're right because
02:32even some of the best athletes of all time jerry rice was embarrassing on television that's the best
02:37wide receiver in the history of the sport emmett smith was embarrassing on television that might
02:42be one of the best running backs we've ever seen so it's not the perfect transition for these players
02:46and coaches to just get behind the tv camera and you know just have a microphone in front of their
02:50face and it doesn't always work out but saban's been very good because you're right he does love the
02:54game he is passionate about the game he does have answers the questions that most people don't know
02:59hey coach when you're down seven at the break of an sec championship game what did you tell your
03:05team like he can answer those questions hey coach when your team's not looking so good you bring them
03:09back up and win a national championship he can answer those questions so he has the cachet and
03:14he's very good on camera and people will listen to what he has to say because he's usually a straight
03:18shooter when he gives you those answers and he's only getting more comfortable as time goes by on what
03:22you can and can't say how you can approach things and certainly one of those coaching fraternity
03:26things that you're never supposed to do criticize other individuals or teams will get better as the
03:31years go farther as he separated himself as a head coach excuse me coach saban i didn't mean to date
03:37you here he's only 73 years old but his birthday is in october something not discussed enough about
03:44nick saban birthday's on halloween a little bit spooky just thought that i would mention so right
03:51now drs the pressure is on kaylin de boer there is no doubt about it right nine wins last year
03:56absolutely embarrassed in the relia quest poll although a bowl game all of his guys were there
04:01against the reserves of michigan it leaves a bad lasting taste in the mouth of those around tuscaloosa
04:08the first season since saban's first back in 2007 that alabama including postseason affairs did not win
04:18at least 10 games only nine for the crimson tide but this year the win total nine and a half
04:24in tuscaloosa even juice on both sides minus 110 over minus 110 under alabama one of three teams
04:34around the sec that has a minus money price drs to reach the college football playoff of course
04:39breaking in a new quarterback in ty simpson kaylin de boer reunited with his offensive coordinator in
04:45ryan grubb who makes his way to tuscaloosa as well they work together for a long time
04:51at washington grubb then remained in the northwest as the oc for the seattle seahawks
04:57last year but is now with de boer once again in tuscaloosa what is your outlook on the crimson tide
05:04entering 2025 same way every single year because that bar had been reset by nick saban before saban
05:11got there they were dying for a winner after coming off the bear bryant years like 15 20 years previous
05:16the shula years of the bows i mean there was some bad football that you got in alabama so the
05:21standard as we like to say in pittsburgh is the standard and the standard is for them to make the
05:25college football playoff and there's no excuses for them not to do that there's always built-in
05:28excuses in the bcs era only two teams get to go there uh so you have to be undefeated and we play
05:33in the sec that's impossible you can legitimately have two to three losses in the sec and still be a
05:37competitive player down the stretch for the college football playoff so the expectations for me
05:42it isn't really championship or bust even though technically alabama fans probably think that way
05:46but it certainly is playoff or bust at alabama no doubt about it a minus 160 price for bama to reach
05:54the cfp this year drs news yesterday that as a champion of expansion you might not love of course
06:01the college football playoff conversation has really kind of featured the big 10 now against the sec
06:07when these two teams were pretty much in lockstep in terms of what the format might look like for the
06:1412 or for the 16 team college football playoff era supposedly coming our way in 2026 now it seems as
06:22though the big 10 remains locked in on the idea they want the 4-4-2-2-1 model where the sec has
06:29transitioned it's thought to the 5 plus 11 model and both are standing their ground the big 10 saying
06:36we are not going to budge unless the sec adds a ninth conference game which is always a conversation
06:43each and every offseason yeah i don't know like you know what the easiest thing to do with this is
06:48uh if you are a power five conference you cannot play any team outside of the power five conference
06:54that handles everything we'll need down the stretch no cupcakes keep it simple get the good team playing
06:59the good teams it'll all work itself out in the end that's the issue i have with college football
07:04not big 10 versus sec just take the cupcakes out of football and we'll all enjoy a nice hearty steak
07:11instead then but that is the issue they want to be playing more p4 foes we'll talk more about it up
07:18next rounding out our three hours together live right here on this thursday on the early line a quick
07:24update at the open championship scotty scheffler three under par had a putt on 18 his final hole of the day
07:32to tie the co-leaders at four under those guys right now still matt vitzpatrick howtong lee and
07:39jacob scov olison all at four under more than likely as scotty tidies up his par putt that is very close
07:46to the cup he will end his opening round with a three under par 68 again par 71 at royal port rush know
07:54that for any of your round over underscore bets as well how about the native northern irishman
08:01rory mcelroy bogeyed his first birdied his second rory back to even par scotty is at three under some
08:09familiar names some veterans dot the leaderboard early as well lee westwood two under sergio garcia
08:15two under phil mickelson one under john rom a one under 70 as well and how about victor hovland who
08:24eagled that par five second hole he is two under early on in his opening round plenty to continue to
08:31bring you across the open championship calls oldest major the 153rd playing of it the fourth and final
08:38this year throughout the remainder of this week plus 210 scotty scheffler who is plus 450 entering the
08:45tournament but after an opening round 368 only one shot back of the leaders of course a very short
08:53price at plus 210 live right now rory's second best number at eight to one again he is even only two
09:00holes in to his opening round it is the first day at the open championship it is the fourth and final
09:07at scc media days in atlanta our four teams at the podium meeting the media and reporters today
09:14texas a and m missouri arkansas and kentucky these teams not necessarily expected to contend for a
09:23conference crowd maybe a and m your number two under mike elko as they will be back in college station
09:30this year just to clear some things up by the way when you look at a and there's been some reports
09:36about shamar stewart drafted 17th overall by the bangles has not signed and is the only first round
09:43rookie to not sign that new contract that he's been back working out in college station with a and m
09:49might he play this year for the aggies if you're drafted in the nfl even if you don't sign your
09:55contract and re-enter the draft which is a potential for shamar stewart he can't just play once again in
10:01college football now he could sue for extra eligibility as basically everybody has tried against
10:06the ncaa but more than likely that would be a long legal battle that would not be resolved before
10:12this year anyway just thought i would say but a and m does have some talent defensively and of course
10:18marcel reed who was a true freshman last year at the quarterback spot now that true starter once again
10:23for the aggies their win total seven and a half their place to win the sec is 15 to one not one of the
10:31longer ones it's top 10 right now around the conference the aggies a difficult slate everybody
10:37in the sec you'll hear this constantly has a hard schedule but in comparing the 16 teams in this
10:42conference who has the easiest one that's missouri seven and a half the win total for eli drinkwitz and
10:51his tigers a consistently successful program under the drink man in columbia of course last year there
10:59was a lot of hope because of returning talent brady cook luther burden theo weiss well brady cook is
11:04gone luther burden is gone but missouri was aggressive in the transfer portal adding the backup at penn
11:11state and a wonderful athlete in beau perbula who of course made some headlines as he hit the transfer
11:16portal left penn state before their cfp run don't blame perbula blame the scheduling of everything in
11:22college football it is now the signal caller for mizzou seven and a half that win total for the tigers
11:28but the easiest schedule in the sec entering 2025 what do sam pitman and the hogs have in 2025 five
11:36and a half to win total for arkansas not often do we see kentucky and mark stoops with a win total of
11:44four and a half last year kentucky was a four and eight football team they were favored a ton at least
11:50early in the year they were atrocious not only could they not cover as the favorite side they would just
11:56lose games outright when booked as a favorite four and a half to win total for the cats again last year
12:03four and eight but in the previous eight years under stoops he had kind of reinvigorated the football
12:09program at the basketball school in lexington they had reached a bowl game all eight years and in the
12:15seven full seasons in that eight-year run prior to 2024 at least seven wins and at least six in the
12:22regular season so maybe it's a sign of the times for the wildcats to have a win total of four and a
12:29half that does it for us on this thursday we'll be back tomorrow on a friday 8 a.m eastern time here
12:35on the grid we'll talk to you next
