00:00Hey, it's Joe from V-Cam TV Studios, and for today's episode of Radio DJ Reacts,
00:05J.R. is going to react to some 70s pop culture.
00:10And now we have the classic sitcom from the 70s, WKRP in Cincinnati,
00:16which I know for a fact, because you've told me this before,
00:20is a show that anybody who goes into radio is told about.
00:25WKRP in Cincinnati, of course.
00:27It was a show that I actually stumbled across when I took my first gig in Nashville,
00:33leaving town.
00:34Not my first gig, but my first gig in a medium-sized market.
00:39I mean, I stumbled across it on YouTube.
00:41I had never known about the show before, but obviously it's super well-known
00:45and well-respected throughout our industry, and it's a show that I own on DVD.
00:51Radio DJ Reacts
00:54Feel the rhythm in
00:56Oh, this guy's the best.
01:09Okay, that was...
01:11What was it? Read it? Read it?
01:15Felix Mandel's orchestra with their beautiful version of the all-time favorite,
01:21David. How can I miss you if you won't go away?
01:26Sure, all you doughboys out there remember that one.
01:29Yeah.
01:30And for some reason, we'll be right back with more of your favorite recorded melodies.
01:37After this...
01:38Loading in the 8-track.
01:40Play it. Hit it.
01:43Shady Hill.
01:45Cincinnati's finest rest home.
01:46It's crazy, so what I've learned is these were called carts, right?
01:52And the jocks would have to play these carts live while they were on the air.
01:56These carts, once inserted into the machine, can be used for music, commercials, jingles,
02:03station identification, and bumpers.
02:10Have you ever been that tired on a shift?
02:14Oh, I've certainly been tired. I don't know about that tired.
02:18All right, homies. It's officially midnight. Time for me to piece the hell out of here.
02:23Before I took my night shift job in Nashville, they had me do some overnight shifts so I could get used to the board,
02:30get used to where everything was and how it was laid out, because it was a brand new studio for me.
02:35And I remember going in just so jacked up and excited and just hyped up and then quickly just starting to fade as it got later and later,
02:46but not passed out during the show.
02:48I don't think I've ever fallen asleep during my hair shift.
02:52Listen, what's the weather like out there?
02:55Oh, it's raining.
02:56Excuse me a minute.
02:57So call Shady Hills today.
03:01Remember, there just might not be a tomorrow.
03:06And on that happy note, let's take a look at the weather.
03:10We have reports that it's coming down in buckets out there.
03:13Buckets down there.
03:14In other parts of the state.
03:16In other parts of the state.
03:17Experts are predicting that sunny skies will return by noon, but not here.
03:24No, not here.
03:25No, he doesn't know at all.
03:27If you wait a word, you might want to take an umbrella.
03:30Or you might not.
03:31Yeah, who knows?
03:33Okay, these days, since everything's on the phone, do they still make you do a weather report?
03:39As far as weather goes, usually that's piped in within your hour by your local TV news team or your local meteorologist, right?
03:50Um, but I've actually had to do updates on weather during my air shift.
03:59So all these warnings keep popping up that I have to play during the show.
04:05Uh, yeah.
04:06Never had a tornado warning before in Maine.
04:10Holy cow, dude.
04:12When extreme situations happen like that, um, I have to kind of stop being that fun air personality, escape from reality.
04:23And I have to be a little bit more serious and deliver serious news, which I never love to do.
04:29Um, but, you know, if you can find a way to make it interesting, that's what you, that's what you try and do.
04:36You're listening to the Johnny Caravella show.
04:40Okay, he has, he is a guy of many names, by the way.
04:43And now it's time to listen to one of my personal favorites.
04:47It's the Hallelujah Tabernacle Choir with their beautiful rendition of, You're Having My Baby.
04:57This guy is clearly in a format that he does not want to be in.
05:02And he's just trying so hard to care.
05:04I can't, I just can't wait to see Johnny Fever.
05:15I'm pretty sure that was one of his nicknames.
05:17I haven't watched the show back in a while.
05:22No.
05:26Yes.
05:26All right, Cincinnati, it is time for this town to get down.
05:30Here we go.
05:32You got Johnny.
05:34Dr. Johnny Fever.
05:36Yes, let's go.
05:37I've burned up in here.
05:38What?
05:39We are all in critical condition, babies.
05:42Babies?
05:43But you can tell me where it hurts.
05:45No.
05:45Because I got the healing prescription here from the big KRP musical medicine cabinet.
05:50Now I am talking about your 50,000 watt.
05:53Ooh, 50K, dude.
05:55Let's go.
05:55So just sit right down.
05:57Relax.
05:58Open your ears real wide and say, give it to me straight, doctor.
06:02Take it.
06:04Oh, when I see stuff like that, I'm just like, yes.
06:09Yes, absolutely.
06:10I love it.
06:11Wow.
06:12He was pretty smooth on that read, wasn't he?
06:14When he's being the doctor, when he's being Johnny Fever, 10 out of 10.
06:19Absolutely.
06:19I would listen to that guy every day.
06:23It's just such a fun shtick.
06:26And he's so behind it that it's just believable.
06:29It's just fun.
06:31Yes, here he is.
06:32Are you awake now?
06:33Because it's 10.15 in the morning.
06:36For those of you who are still into time.
06:39You know, it really flies when you're having fun, doesn't it?
06:43I know I am.
06:44I know I'm out of control.
06:45I know my pulse is starting to pound and the blood is rushing around and I feel feverish
06:52and I am the doctor.
06:53And I know all you babies, you're sitting at home and you're saying to yourselves, tell
06:58me, doctor, when you feel like this, what do you take?
07:01Well, I'll tell you.
07:02Just take those old records.
07:04Let's go.
07:08Great wordplay.
07:09Great setup.
07:10Being a music guy, does it really matter the type of music that you play?
07:16Honestly, I just, I hear it so often and so much that I don't hear it, if that makes any
07:21sense.
07:22I'm kind of talking in and out of these songs.
07:24There are very few that I'll like, I'll crank up and I'll jam out to them because I'm just
07:30excited about the track, but that's very few and far between.
07:35For the most part, you're around it so much, you hear it so much that it just becomes part
07:40of the routine.
07:42And now let's rap to these heavy dudes here live in person.
07:45This is Venus Flytrap, one-on-one with Scum.
07:49Scum.
07:50I remember Scum.
07:51We hate Cincinnati.
07:52You son of a...
07:54We don't like this studio much either.
07:57Look, why don't you introduce yourself?
07:59Very well.
08:00I'm Blood.
08:01This is Nigel.
08:02And this is Sir Charles Weatherby.
08:05He answers to dog.
08:10Let's start with dog.
08:12Where did you three first meet?
08:14Where did we meet?
08:15How boring.
08:16Oh, come on.
08:18Yes, but this is particularly boring.
08:21No one should have to hear this nonsense.
08:23I would suggest that everyone listening turn to another radio station immediately.
08:27Okay, now we're throwing hands.
08:30No way.
08:31No way.
08:33So this band is turning out to be way different than they were expecting.
08:38Has that ever happened to you?
08:40Did somebody come in the studio and you were expecting one thing and got something completely
08:44different?
08:45I'll tell you where Venus Flytrap went wrong is trying to chat with these guys alive on
08:52the air, not really knowing where to go or kind of what to do or what kind of reaction
08:57he would get out of them.
08:59Of course, he was hoping for a certain type of reaction.
09:01Got the complete opposite.
09:02The guys were actually like very just...
09:05They're just jerks flat out, right?
09:07But it's a tough thing.
09:09It's a tough thing to do.
09:11I've only experienced something like that conducting an interview in front of a bunch
09:15of station listeners that got to come in and be a part of an acoustic performance and
09:21interview type scenario.
09:24And I won't say the name of the band.
09:25I won't call out anybody.
09:28I'm sure at some point in my career, I will.
09:30I'd love to tell who the hell it was, but I never wanted to hit somebody in the face
09:37so bad, so bad.
09:40Just giving you one word answers on purpose, just being rude on purpose, but you have to
09:46maintain your professionalism and this guy's bandmates would have to like stick up for him.
09:53Not stick up for him, excuse me.
09:55This guy's bandmates would have to like, you know, try to explain his behavior or try to
10:00jump in and save it.
10:02Like what, what, what, what, what they're trying to say is this.
10:06Oh, I remember because we both really liked this band and we were trying to figure out
10:12like what would be some really fun questions to ask them to get them to open up and, you
10:17know, not make it such a run of the mill interview.
10:19It's very tough to remain professional when they're just being mean to be mean, you know,
10:27but who knows?
10:27Maybe I caught them on a bad day.
10:29Maybe something just went down.
10:31I don't know exactly.
10:33Now back live with scum.
10:35Scum.
10:35Okay, dog.
10:36Tell us about your formal musical training.
10:38I have none.
10:41I swear.
10:42Sometimes it's like pulling teeth.
10:44I got a degree in cello at the Royal Academy.
10:46Oh yeah?
10:47Oh yeah?
10:47I'm not surprised.
10:48I don't play too much anymore.
10:49You can't get thousands of screaming teenage girls to come to a cello recital now, can you?
10:54It's that old, it's that age old saying.
10:56What is it?
10:57Don't meet your idols, you know?
10:59And I think that kind of pertains to this.
11:01But of course, with my, you know, field of work, I have to meet these, you know, popular
11:06and famous musicians and influencers all the time.
11:10And, you know, oftentimes it goes great.
11:13It goes as expected.
11:14But once in a while, there's a bad apple and it's kind of like, yeah, I, I kind of, you
11:20know, wish I could get that one back.
11:23Our next clip is going to come from Saturday Night Live.
11:25It's Dan Aykroyd, the disc jockey.
11:30Good morning.
11:32Now radio station KLOG commences its programming day.
11:35KLOG is a division of board core communications.
11:39The policy of KLOG and KLOG FM is to give you, the listener, the best in both AM and FM entertainment.
11:46We wish you a good morning and a nice day.
11:48He only needs one microphone here.
11:50What are you doing?
11:51Oh, come on.
11:52It's Dan Aykroyd.
11:53That guy can have all the mics he wants.
11:55Yeah, that was the moody blues for our morning.
12:03Morning, as always, the first awakening.
12:05I'm Kenneth Wardell on KLOG FM.
12:07Kenneth Wardell.
12:08Mellowing out your morning with some really good sound.
12:11We have music.
12:11I'm a little high right now.
12:13I'm looking forward to an interview with Peter Criss, the drummer from Kiss.
12:17He's going to tell us how he chose the cat makeup.
12:20Here's something new from Aerosmith.
12:23Switch right back.
12:31He's nailing all the cliches.
12:34How would you say he's doing as a jock?
12:36He's a 10.
12:3610 out of 10.
12:38Especially his FM persona, where he just, he gets real close on that.
12:43Yeah.
12:44And he's right up on there.
12:46It was just, that was awesome.
12:48But then the other one, he's speaking so fast.
12:50It's the mile a minute.
12:50He's got all these different words.
12:51It's going to come out of his mouth.
12:53It was just, it was great.
12:54Sounds like the Micro Machine's got it.
12:55Yeah.
12:56This is the Micro Machine Man presenting the most midget miniature motorcade of Micro Machines.
12:59He was, he was 10 out of 10.
13:01He was awesome.
13:02Now, let Zeppelin stare away.
13:05All right.
13:05He's got a long song.
13:07He's got time now.
13:09Yeah.
13:10Yeah.
13:10This guy is earning his paycheck.
13:19This guy is earning his paycheck.
13:23All the crazy kid Casey sent you.
13:24And if you big disco, you're really going to dig the fifth.
13:26It's moving up there on the KLOG Hit Pick Survey.
13:32Dropping the needle on the perfect spot.
13:35Yeah.
13:36Do the big speakers keep getting you evicted?
13:37Then why not visit Stairway to Headphones?
13:41Stairway to Headphones.
13:42Stairway to Headphones deals only in quality headphones and motorcycle and football helmets
13:47all wired for sound.
13:50Stairway to Headphones 8080.
13:51Sterone Pool Boulevard.
13:52Flex 1.
13:53Ask for Gary.
13:54Tell him Kenneth Wardell.
13:55KLOG FM sent you.
13:57Here's Black Sabbath.
13:59Well, that's a big part of what you guys do, right?
14:02The ad read.
14:04All right.
14:04So one of the many things that we do in radio, aside from talking in and out of songs, is
14:07we actually do live endorsement reads for clients.
14:09I'm about to do one for one of mine right now.
14:11I got my notes right here.
14:12And I wanted to take you behind the board and show you a little bit about what that's
14:15like.
14:15So let's do it.
14:16We got 30 seconds to fit it in.
14:17Here we go.
14:18Everybody, a better burger.
14:19Hey, it's JR.
14:20Now, if you're looking to buy a new car, truck, or SUV, there is no better place to do it
14:24than at Castle Rock Chevrolet Buick GMC.
14:27How was his ad read?
14:28His ad reads were good.
14:29They were on point, especially the stairway to headphones.
14:33I thought that was tremendous.
14:34I wish I could have read that endorsement.
14:37It was great.
14:38Hey, the students council at Roll Cage High School and someone asked me to say a few words
14:42about their art fair.
14:44The kids are having an art fair there.
14:45It's in the gym Thursday night from 8 p.m.
14:48And the kids sometimes you feel like you need to talk that fast to fit it within the ramp
14:52of the song, the intro of the track.
14:54A lot of good art there.
14:55And here's something to take us up.
14:56The News Time with Bernie Phillips.
14:58The Antler Dance taking us to KLOG News with Bernie Phillips.
15:01I like this character better.
15:09I guess all you folks who got out to the Dead concert last night at Wildcat Stadium kind
15:14of know where my head's at today.
15:15Yep.
15:16But hey, you know, I heard that city council...
15:17Relatability, local?
15:18...rock concerts because of damage done to the AstroTurf.
15:22If you have to smoke cigarettes, put them in your beer can or carry an ashtray.
15:25If you smoke anything else, smoke it, then eat it.
15:28It won't kill you, but cigarettes will.
15:30It's a shame this kind of thing is still going on.
15:32And I guess some of us didn't learn anything from the 60s.
15:35Ooh.
15:35Hey, we're coming up to news time right now with Bernie Phillips.
15:38Let's find out.
15:38I'm going to take a little break and find out what's happening in the news with the Bernie
15:41Phillips at the KLOG News Center.
15:45He needs a break.
15:47Hello.
15:47KLOG News with Bernie Phillips.
15:50I'm Bernie Phillips.
15:51Oh, my gosh.
15:52Of course.
15:53The military measures continue to be taken against the swine.
15:55Ugh.
15:56The United States Department of Agriculture officials warn nothing has been done to halt
16:00the North Korean movement of the day.
16:01We're all wearing so many different hats.
16:04So for him to simultaneously be doing two live programs and then also being like the, you
16:11know, the news guy after, just three hats at once.
16:15It's just tremendous.
16:17Yeah, it's like a lot of people kind of forget that sometimes you got to be a jack-of-all-trades.
16:23You're the entertainer and you're going out there for the interview, but you also have
16:27to set up your shot.
16:29So now you're a videographer.
16:30My mom has that camera.
16:32Yeah, I love it.
16:33It's a mom camera.
16:34Yeah.
16:35I'm just going to frame up your shot real quick here.
16:38Make sure we're all set.
16:39Perfect.
16:40And then since you're the content producer, you're the editor and probably the sound guy.
16:45So you're trying to do all these things and trying to give your attention to multiple
16:51things at once.
16:52Our next show is The Lucy Show, which was Lucille Ball's follow-up to I Love Lucy.
16:58So I guess you can say that America no longer loved her.
17:03They just kind of liked her at this point.
17:06Well, I certainly know that that's the right turntable.
17:08That is the master switch.
17:10That is the amplifier.
17:11This is the selectivity switch, whatever that is.
17:15And of course, I know that's the microphone.
17:16I bet she would be phenomenal at this.
17:18Well, these are all the baseball teams.
17:19She's so charismatic.
17:20The sound effects here, they'll help you dramatize the baseball game.
17:23Yep.
17:23And I know that's the left turntable.
17:25Right.
17:26And that's the audio control of the left turntable.
17:28Right.
17:28And this is the tape machine for the commercial.
17:30The commercial.
17:31Real the real, baby.
17:32Spangle Soda Pop.
17:33Right.
17:33Spangle.
17:33They're our big sponsor and they pay all the bills.
17:35I know.
17:36I know.
17:37I know.
17:37I know.
17:37Wow.
17:39That is some old school radio equipment.
17:41You'll be going on in a few minutes.
17:42Uh-huh.
17:43So here's a rundown of the show.
17:44Well, I guess I can take off.
17:46Good luck.
17:47Have a nice day.
17:47Yeah, I don't know if he should.
17:49Okay, and don't you worry about a thing.
17:51I've got everything under control.
17:52Bye.
17:53Bye-bye.
17:53Bye-bye.
17:55Famous last words, huh?
17:56Wait.
18:00The right turntable and the master switch.
18:03The amplifier and selectivity switch.
18:06Oh, no.
18:09What does this do?
18:12I haven't got a note on that one.
18:14Uh-oh.
18:17Oh, just a fan.
18:24Oh, no.
18:26No.
18:28No.
18:28No.
18:28Oh, no.
18:29Oh, no.
18:29All her notes.
18:33Oh, dear.
18:35Oh, dear.
18:38Well, now I know what turns on the electric fan, but I don't know anything else.
18:42No, you're doomed.
18:44What's that?
18:44I'm on the air.
18:46I'm on the air.
18:48Oh, rubber baby buggy bumper.
18:50Rubber baby buggy bumper.
18:52Hello out there.
18:53Hello out there.
18:54This is, uh, this is, uh, uh, uh, uh, Lucy.
18:57Lucy, yes.
18:58Lucy, the disc jockey, saying hello out there.
19:01Hello.
19:01Hello to all of you people in Radio Land.
19:05We're way out there.
19:06But, uh, first a word from our sponsor.
19:09Spangled Soda Pop.
19:10Flip the switch.
19:13Flip it.
19:15Flip it.
19:16Flip it.
19:20Oh, no.
19:21Oh, no.
19:27Spangled Soda Pop.
19:29Oh, no.
19:32What?
19:33It chopped and screwed.
19:36Oh, no.
19:37Oh, no.
19:37Oh, no.
19:40It did sound like he needed to burp.
19:46Yes, sir.
19:47Spangled Soda Pop.
19:49You, you really should drink that stuff.
19:51Yeah.
19:53And now for some music.
19:57All right.
19:57What do you got for us, Luce?
19:58Oh, no.
20:00Come on.
20:01No.
20:04Oh, no.
20:06This is why I'm thankful every record I play is digital.
20:09Oh, God.
20:11Yep.
20:11Typical Lucy.
20:13This is becoming one big calamity.
20:15All right.
20:15So what's the biggest mishap you've ever had happen while you were on the air?
20:19You know, as far as disasters go for me in the studio, it's really never been anything
20:26dramatic.
20:28And that's because a lot of I don't want to say fail proof.
20:30What we do certainly is not fail proof.
20:32But with everything being digital, there's less room for human error, you know, with
20:38having to queue up records or CDs or having to to leave your booth to walk behind you to
20:46play a sponsor's tape.
20:47Oh, like that is just foolish.
20:53And then to have your fax machine on the other side, like that room was set up terribly.
20:58But I've had situations happen where you go to fire off your next element or your next song and it
21:04doesn't play.
21:06So you hit it again.
21:07But then it starts playing both elements at the same time.
21:11Maybe it's a sweeper in a song or maybe it's two songs or maybe it's a commercial in a song and
21:16they're playing on top of each other and you're live on the air and you're sweating and you're
21:20panicking and you don't know what to do.
21:22It's like it's like that scene from Joe Dirt.
21:25I'm new.
21:26I don't know what to do.
21:28It can be it can be terrifying.
21:30You just got to try to regain your composure and remember that, you know, the listener,
21:36they're not going to remember this, right?
21:38You need to get over it.
21:40It's that old saying of if your quarterback just tossed a pick, what pick?
21:45Go back out there and play.
21:47Oh, no.
21:49The news bulletin.
21:51We interrupt this program to bring you a traffic advisory bulletin.
21:55All the alternate routes are heavily congested.
21:58Please use the freeways.
21:59That thing is loud.
22:04Well, that's what it says.
22:07And now, folks, we bring you a spot announcement.
22:13What?
22:15Spot announcement.
22:18What's that?
22:19Spot announcement.
22:20Flip the switch.
22:24No, that's the sound effect.
22:27Well, now, thank you, spot.
22:29Oh, spot.
22:30Okay, spot the dog.
22:33That's funny.
22:34Now for a little music.
22:35Uh-oh.
22:39Phone's ringing.
22:40Where is it?
22:42Hello?
22:43Mimi?
22:44Yeah, like Eisenhower.
22:46Yeah.
22:47Mildred and Doris and Nora.
22:50Yeah, yeah.
22:50And Emma.
22:52Uh-huh.
22:52Mary Ann and Evelyn and Sadie and Emma.
22:55At that point, I'd say, and the rest of the softball team.
22:58Oh, well, this was the Red Dead.
23:00Oh, she doesn't have any records.
23:02They're all broken.
23:06It's going to skip on her because it's all busted up.
23:12Oh, gosh.
23:13No.
23:13I can't find you're the one for me, but here's a good one.
23:19Yes, sir.
23:19You're going to love it.
23:20Yes, it's Bing Crosby sing Stephen Foster.
23:23Bing Crosby.
23:24All right.
23:25There we are.
23:27Drop the needle.
23:29Pshew.
23:31Stephen Foster.
23:36Oh, I see.
23:39It was a drop.
23:41Oh.
23:43Oh, gosh.
23:45That fax machine or whatever it is.
23:48The news bulletins.
23:51This job is just so stressful.
23:54It really shows you how stressful this industry can be.
23:59Who's listening to it, though?
24:00She's on the air.
24:03She's done nothing to tell anybody, has she?
24:05I don't know.
24:06I think people would just be like, what is happening?
24:09I need to know what's going to happen next.
24:11This is so weird.
24:13All right.
24:15Now, I told you it was a hit.
24:18And listen to that crowd roar.
24:20Yeah.
24:24All right.
24:25Yes, sir.
24:26Listen to that crowd roar.
24:27She's making sense out of something that makes no sense.
24:31Running for second.
24:32Running.
24:32Running.
24:35Oh, no.
24:40Oh, yep.
24:45They're all going to play at the same time, aren't they?
24:47Yep.
24:48There goes her board.
24:49She is officially off the air.
24:52Get out of the building.
24:53It's on fire, Lucy.
24:56Oh, my.
24:57Okay, hypothetically, say you're the jock who has to go on after all this.
25:06What do you think in the minute you walk into that studio?
25:08If I walked into the studio after her from my shift, I'd just turn around and go home.
25:14I mean, there's no way you're going to be able to be on the air because just be thankful the building didn't burn down.
25:21I think that's all you can really do in that situation.
25:24Bro, she's playing the heat, man.
25:27She's bringing the heat.
25:30Oh, I love this.
25:32She's got the fire hose out.
25:33She's spraying everything down.
25:36Oh, my goodness.
25:39Oh, not the two track.
25:43I mean, the real, the real.
25:46Oh, my.
25:47Oh, my.
25:47Better change their station to hot.
25:55That's for sure.
26:03Lucy, you are off the air.
26:05I have another request number.
26:08I'm dreaming of a boy.
26:10Oh, my gosh.
26:15She is brilliant.
26:15She is just brilliant, dude.
26:19That was phenomenal because being in there and being live on the air can be so stressful.
26:25I mean, she had no idea what she was doing.
26:28Why they would just trust her in there with her little sticky notes is beyond me.
26:33But even though everything went to complete hell, she still pulled it off.
26:37So my hat's off to Lucy.
26:38I mean, at some point, you got to put the blame on the station manager, right?
26:43How do you just leave Lucy alone in the studio with minimal training and not expect this to happen?
26:50Oh, yeah.
26:51No, that was like everything in there.
26:54She should have had a team of like three, four people.
26:56And they had her doing it all herself, her first time, no experience.
27:01And the board caught on fire, which is crazy.
27:06I've obviously never have had that happen to me.
27:09I've had boards fail on me before.
27:11You know, being on for so long and being functional for so long, they're bound to, you know, any piece of gear is bound to fail you after a while.
27:18But, yeah, nothing like that.
27:20That was just, I don't know.
27:23What's the description I'm looking?
27:26That was just like horrendously beautiful.
27:28All of it.
27:29Make sure to like, follow, and subscribe, all three, if you're feeling up to it.
27:34Again, my name is JR.
27:35Thank you so much for watching.
27:36And remember, it's cool to be you.
27:39Peace.
