00:00Hey it's Joe from VKMTV studios. It's Friday night and the mood is right. TGIF, TGIF on Radio DJ Reacts.
00:09JR is going back to the 90s. Back to that Friday night where all your favorite teen sitcoms would air.
00:17And guess what? The radio disc jockey showed up there too. Like Cody Lambert on Step by Step.
00:23DJ Codeman. Sasha Mitchell. Learn more about him in this video.
00:30Okay, we got a major dedication company. The latest one's from Peter to Laura. He says he's sorry he stretched your sweater but he had a really good time with the movies last night.
00:48Frankie Valli, let's go. DJ Codeman's got kind of a vibe, doesn't he?
00:53Cody's just such a fun guy. I bet if he really put his mind to it he could he could be a tremendous radio host.
01:01Well, once again, we have to take a short break while your host with the most gets out those BLTs on toast.
01:06That's table number nine because they've been waiting 45 minutes for their order.
01:12Oh!
01:13The way he plays the record, tremendous.
01:1650s Cafe. I'd love to go to something like that. That'd be a fun gig.
01:22I think we gotta give him bonus points, right?
01:24Because not only is he hosting and DJing, he's also flipping the burgers.
01:28That's a true radio host in our field.
01:31Like I alluded to earlier, you're wearing multiple hats.
01:34You're a broadcaster. You're a podcaster.
01:37You're a full-time social media influencer.
01:40You're shooting and cutting and editing and writing your own video projects.
01:43Like it's a never-ending list of things that need to get done.
01:48So it's fitting that he's actually doing these things simultaneously.
01:52So what do you think of the Codeman's decision to just have one earbud on and one earbud off?
01:58Um, I don't like that.
02:01I have to wear both simply so I can hear how I sound processed in the mix, you know?
02:07Um, but maybe because of the environment he's in, maybe because he's doing a remote,
02:13maybe that, maybe that is helping him.
02:16I don't know, but I'm always two headphones on probably way louder than they should be.
02:22So I can really monitor my voice and where it's going.
02:24Like right now, not wearing headphones, talking to you, it feels a little bit strange.
02:29I'm going to be honest.
02:29It feels a little bit strange.
02:31So hopefully it sounds all right.
02:32Our next clip also comes from the ABC TGIF lineup.
02:36It's Full House.
02:37And we got the Rush Hour Renegades.
02:40It was a show that Joey Gladstone and Jesse Katsoppel has hosted.
02:45Yes, we're at the radio station and we're on in a couple of minutes now.
02:48What is wrong with you?
02:50It must be that cold mess that I took from my nose.
02:52They got the late shift, huh?
02:54What old cold pill is going to do anything to you?
02:55You know, that's why I took four.
02:58Oh, come on.
02:59Yikes.
03:01Have you ever been this sick on the air?
03:04I have not, no.
03:05I've gone to work definitely pretty sick, like battling colds and all that kind of stuff.
03:10But if I can talk and it doesn't sound too awful, then I'm going to do the show.
03:15Well, I don't want my nose stuffed up on the radio, but it's all clear.
03:18The news is next and stay tuned for the debut of the Rush Hour Renegades.
03:25What do you think of the name Rush Hour Renegades?
03:28Would you listen to that?
03:29I think it's, I don't know.
03:30I think it's a cool name.
03:31And I think it's if Jesse was awake, of course.
03:34He could be the really cool, suave, you know, cool, suave ladies man.
03:40And Joey can be kind of the humor, the comic relief.
03:44And I think those two together toss a girl in their third chair.
03:48And that's your new morning show right there.
04:00Whoa.
04:01Watch the board.
04:02He's fine.
04:03See, what he likes to do is meditate before a performance.
04:07Helps him relax.
04:09I bet Joey would actually be really good at this because he's super witty.
04:13He's super quick.
04:14And he's a comic.
04:15Whatever works.
04:16Knock him dead.
04:17We're practically there.
04:19So I'm pretty sure he can come up with some really good stuff.
04:21I've even done a show from home when I had caught COVID.
04:26I had to cut the show from home.
04:28And even then, I didn't want to miss my air shift because I felt like this is going to sound a little bit silly if you don't work in the field.
04:37But I kind of felt like people were depending on hearing me that day and helping them get home from whatever might have happened throughout their day.
04:45So I always try to make sure that I don't miss any air shifts.
04:49And if I do, it's because I'm either on vacation so I avoid getting burnt out or it's because I'm so sick that I can't actually perform.
04:58KFLH, San Francisco.
05:02That's the traffic report from the KFLH traffic cop car.
05:06This is brilliant stuff.
05:08I love this.
05:09I should point out that Jesse does some really great impersonations.
05:13Isn't that right, Jess?
05:16Hey, Jess, why don't you do Rodney Dangerfield?
05:19Hey, I want to tell you, I get no respect.
05:21No respect at all.
05:22Yes.
05:22I knew he would do this.
05:23That was unbelievable.
05:25It was like Rodney was really here.
05:26Oh, yeah.
05:26Why don't we give our listeners a break from all this hilarity and listen to a commercial?
05:32Uncle Joey, he would be a tremendous radio host.
05:36He's so funny.
05:38He's quick witted.
05:39He does a bunch of great impressions.
05:41He's doing the bit with the dollar bill, making it sound like it's a helicopter.
05:46I think the guy might have missed his calling.
05:49How are you guys doing?
05:50How are they doing?
05:52You were the one who changed the station in the car.
05:54Oh, no.
05:55Did you have a nice nap, Uncle Jesse?
06:01I'm pinching her cheek really hard, but you folks at home can't see that.
06:05Oh, in the sands!
06:07Go, in the sands!
06:07Man!
06:08Oh, in the sands!
06:09She saw her moment and took it.
06:11She got over shyness, huh?
06:15All right, the Rush Hour Renegades will be right back.
06:17They need to get...
06:18A little rock and roll.
06:19Becky on the air with them.
06:20That would be phenomenal.
06:22Okay, would you actually listen to the Rush Hour Renegades?
06:25Because if this is their first show, and the only thing you've heard is a little girl singing when the saints go marching in, and a guy sleeping.
06:33Right.
06:34Would you tune in for the next show?
06:36You know, if I had tuned in for the first time, and that's what I caught, I would definitely give them a chance the next day, just because I would want to see what kind of train wreck was going to happen again.
06:47Our next one here is from the 90s TGIF show, Boy Meets World.
06:53Good morning, John Adams High.
06:56After a 10-year absence, we've dusted off the console...
06:59I love the morning announcements.
07:00I was actually able to do a morning announcement at my former high school, which was super cool being a local personality.
07:10And with me here, my engineer and wacky sidekick on the morning zoo, Mr. Alvameese.
07:18Thank you, Mr. Feeney.
07:18You're a great friend of radio.
07:20That's enough, Alvin.
07:21That's enough out of you, buddy.
07:23And now, because the halls of our school beat with the lively heart of contemporary youth, here is the happening sounds of Mr. Michael Bolton.
07:33Oh, come on, Feeney.
07:36Feeney.
07:39They don't like it.
07:40Disconnect it, Sean.
07:41Make it stop!
07:42It's hard to cut the wires with a plastic spoon.
07:44Yeah, and it probably sounds even worse over there, PA in there.
07:47And how much Michael Bolton have you played on the air?
07:50I've never played one Michael Bolton track.
07:52And that's because throughout my career, it's been predominantly pop music or country.
07:59Hi, I'm Michael Bolton.
08:01Have you heard the new sound of Z100?
08:03So the name of their radio station is Patriot Radio.
08:08What type of music would you expect to hear on Patriot Radio?
08:11When I think of Patriot Radio, I think of very safe, very, you know, par for the course, very company narrative.
08:20When I hear the term pirate radio, it's all bets are off.
08:25If anything and anything, you know, anything and everything, excuse me, can go down.
08:29And there kind of are no rules.
08:31I'm Corey Matthews along with Sean Hunter.
08:33And we're back with the most interesting show topic they would give us.
08:36Meet your student council.
08:38Ooh.
08:39This is kind of cool.
08:41Our guest today is Sarah Fairburn, secretary treasurer of your student council.
08:44And according to Mr. Feeney's program log, we'll be discussing the cancellation of the ninth grade spring dance.
08:51Corey's a good speaker.
08:51I'm just going to come out and say that.
08:53So we're going to have a bake sale and try and save our dance.
08:55Elaborate.
08:56Ah, fascinating.
08:58Go on.
08:59We've got time to fill here.
09:00That's about it.
09:02Ah, come on.
09:03What are you hiding?
09:04Stop badgering her.
09:06I got to badger her.
09:07We got nothing else to talk about.
09:11Sean, save him.
09:12This show stinks.
09:13Oh, come on.
09:14No, sir.
09:15Corey and Sean were, they were in, they were in a tough spot trying to get the most that they could out of this girl about this, you know, bake sale or whatever it was.
09:24That's where Sean really needed to step up and he kind of bailed on his boy.
09:27And I thought that was super lame.
09:29Sean and Corey are struggling to get anything out of this interview.
09:33What's your trick when somebody's just not giving you much when you're trying to interview them?
09:39You can keep that conversation going by asking more open-ended questions.
09:43Questions and listening more than you're talking.
09:46It's following up on things that they've said.
09:49And these are all interview skills that you kind of pick up and learn along your way.
09:54Because one of the things that a lot of people can do is they'll ask some question, right?
10:00Maybe it's one that they're even excited to ask.
10:02But then while the guest is giving them the answer, they're not even listening to what the guest has to say.
10:08And they're already looking forward to their next question.
10:12Has your dancing, did that kind of help you determine, hey, this is the kind of records that I want to create?
10:18Yeah, I think it has a big influence on it.
10:19I've grown up dancing since I was six years old.
10:22And I've certainly been guilty of that in my career.
10:25But where I try to really, you know, craft my game and be professional is listening more than you're talking.
10:31You mentioned a bake sale.
10:34What is the profit margin on a cupcake?
10:38Boring.
10:38Can we get Sean on microphone here?
11:01This isn't going to be good.
11:03Give them the number, Corey.
11:06Give them the number, Corey.
11:07All right, I don't want to offend you, so I'm not going to give you my opinion, but I'm going to find you one.
11:12Okay, 303-631-295-7.
11:14It's hits.
11:15Hit me up right now.
11:16303-631-295-7.
11:19It's hits.
11:20A bake sale has its dark side, doesn't it?
11:22I mean, fat, cholesterol.
11:26What about that?
11:28I don't know.
11:29He's trying so hard.
11:30I love it.
11:32Does she not know or choose not to know?
11:36Oh.
11:36You know, no one else wanted to do your show.
11:41Ouch.
11:42Corey.
11:44Corey, Corey, we have a call.
11:46Hello, you're on the air.
11:47For Fiendet, man, go to Deutsches Trudeau in Philadelphia.
11:51Don't worry, Corey.
11:52That happens to me, too.
11:54Sarah, are you still going with Joey DeRuza?
11:56Why do you ask, Spence?
11:57I'm sorry, kids, but the topic is bake sale.
12:02Dance salvation or death by kids.
12:03No, Corey, you've got to lean into that.
12:05Sarah, I believe the man asked you a question.
12:07How about an answer?
12:08We broke up last week.
12:10Oh, here we go.
12:10Phone lines are going to pop now.
12:12She's smiling, Spence.
12:15See, Sean gets it.
12:16He gets it.
12:17Come on, Spence.
12:18If you don't ask this red hot babe out, I will.
12:21Are you going to get a ring?
12:22It's right.
12:22No.
12:23And I'd love to.
12:24I'll meet you at the soda machine right now.
12:26All right.
12:27We have a day.
12:28Sean, no one's interested in this.
12:30Yes, they are.
12:31FC everybody.
12:33Have you ever tried to be a matchmaker on air?
12:35Absolutely.
12:36I think the more interactive you can be with your show, the bigger your listenership will
12:42be because at the end of the day, everybody wants to be a part of something bigger than
12:47them.
12:47So what you're saying is that if they're watching two people fall in love, it almost feels like
12:53they're a part of this.
12:55Oh, totally.
12:55It's no different than, uh, you know, watching your favorite reality show and so-and-so couple,
13:02they're going to get back together and you're really rooting for them this time and you're
13:06invested.
13:06It's, it's very, it's very much like that, except this is happening right in your town,
13:13like probably not far from where you live and you can get regular updates every time
13:18you tune in.
13:19I think that's, that's the importance of that live local radio aspect.
13:23You get to be a part of the show.
13:24You get to call in and give your thoughts.
13:26You get to submit your two cents and you get to kind of, you know, hear the story and,
13:31and kind of hear it play out over time.
13:35We promised Turner.
13:36We'd stick to the top.
13:37Corey, we hit on something that works.
13:39Look at the phone lines.
13:40They're blazing.
13:41That's what the people want.
13:43Big deal, Sean.
13:44A bunch of lonely guys are calling for a girl who's fixed up and gone.
13:47I'm not going to blow a career on radio for a bunch of lonely guys.
13:50Oh, well.
13:54It's on the radio.
13:56Yes, we are.
13:59Could we be on the radio too and talk to boys?
14:05That's why we're here.
14:06I mean, yeah.
14:07Have you ever had random girls just show up to the radio station?
14:12Not in the capacity that Corey and Sean did.
14:15I've actually had people show up with food, which is, I mean, that's not a bad thing either.
14:20I've had girls show up to give me.
14:21Sale?
14:22No, to give me pizza.
14:23I've had girls show up to, you know, bring me energy drinks or burgers or ice cream.
14:31Or even to have me come down and sign a picture, you know, which I felt a little strange doing because I'm no, you know, Justin Bieber.
14:41But it felt pretty cool that somebody in your town can look up to you in that kind of way.
14:47And I always try to play that up on the air if I can.
14:50If they call me and they say that they're on the way, I want to put that on the air.
14:54And then when they call me and say that they actually arrived, I want to put that on the air.
14:57And I've done that before.
14:59And I'll tell the audience, hey, if you don't hear me in two songs, alert the police.
15:04Because there's some girls in the parking lot with Dairy Queen right now.
15:07And it's a little suspect.
15:09So keep an ear out for me.
15:11Meet me at the Dairy Queen where the feeling never ends.
15:15Oh, it's definitely got to be an ego booster.
15:18When girls are sending you stuff, the fan armies want to bribe you so you get gifts from them.
15:27And girls are putting your name in their song.
15:30JR, come on.
15:32One.
15:32So pick up the phone.
15:34You know he's only calling because he's drunk and alone.
15:36So I guess you can kind of relate to why Sean and Corey are so gung-ho to be on radio.
15:44This is Megan.
15:44And Liz.
15:45And you're watching Cue Music Scene with our favorite homie, JR.
15:49Corey and Sean back at you with Lunchtime Lust.
15:54Oh, baby, watch out.
15:56Let's be our next contestant you are.
15:57My name is Jasmine Fontana.
16:01If it isn't, it should be.
16:02Go take the first three callers and hook one of you up.
16:04Sean has the one-liners, bro.
16:07Jasmine Fontana, she sure is.
16:09Yeah, yes, she is.
16:10I love how the whole school is just listening to this.
16:15If this sounds like the girl for you, call us, Corey and Sean.
16:20The hottest show on race, me up.
16:24You know, Jasmine, a couple of these guys have asked me if you're a good kisser, and right now I don't know what to tell them.
16:29Oh, gosh.
16:30He's going for it, dude.
16:31Well, um, maybe I could help you.
16:38Well, maybe you could.
16:45Now you look different up close.
16:46Yeah, yeah.
16:50Ludwig, take over.
16:51Schnell.
16:52Oh, no.
16:53Come on.
16:55Not anymore.
16:56Hello?
16:57It's Lanchambus Ludwig.
16:58You may call up with your requests.
17:00I don't take so.
17:01No, I had a feeling he wouldn't.
17:05They had a good thing going, too, man.
17:07One of the things they did right is they talked about relationships.
17:10Always a popular topic whenever you're on the air.
17:14Who's dating who?
17:15Who's sleeping with who?
17:16Who's cheating on who?
17:18You know, situational drama, that sort of thing is always fun.
17:22Especially when you can get a male and female perspective.
17:24Uh, but Corey and Sean as a duo on the air, I would subscribe to that all day.
17:33They are now local celebrities.
17:36See, Mr. Feeney, everyone loves what we did.
17:39Not everybody.
17:40Consider your radio careers over.
17:43Here you go.
17:43Good morning, John Adams High.
17:46This is Corey and Sean.
17:48Yes, they're back.
17:49The boys are back.
17:50The boys are back.
17:52Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh.
17:53They tried to silence us, but we're back, and we're louder than ever.
17:59Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh.
18:02Now, Mr. Turner, your supervision seems to be working splendidly.
18:06You're listening to Pirate Radio.
18:08Pirate Radio.
18:09Dude, let's go.
18:11Mr. Feeney wanted us to talk about the Spring Dance.
18:14We'll do him one thing.
18:16We'll give you a Spring Dance.
18:18Right here, right now.
18:19Come on, everybody dance.
18:21I'm just impressed with how they were able to hack the like I don't know what
18:26the name of the school that Corey Matthews goes to but hack their signal
18:29take it over oh I'll round up the pirates round up the pirates they're
18:38broadcasting probably from like a broom closet or somewhere somewhere hidden this
18:42is awesome oh are they in the men's room sounds like they're in a shower
18:51oh no he gave it away dude or is that a fake clue because we couldn't possibly be that stupid
19:12busted how would you rate Corey and Sean's transition from
19:21talk up to dropping the song I mean there was certainly no hitting the post you know I didn't
19:26I didn't ever hear lyrics begin in the in the song if they did I must have missed it hitting the post
19:32is essentially the radio jock stops talking right as the lyrics to the song begin right and if you're
19:39an OG like me and you used to record songs on the radio you'd be like okay hurry up shut up I want to
19:44record this song our next clip comes from the tv show Sabrina the Teenage Witch
19:48we're on in five four three two they're always in a rush hey welcome to chick chat with your host
19:56Sabrina Spellman and hello Roxy King that's right Roxy King and Sabrina Spellman on chick chat
20:05chick chat how you feeling about that name great name I think it's I think it's perfect I think it's
20:12exactly what they wanted it to be um it's two girls chopping it up you know get it we we took the it
20:19out of chit and we substituted it with ick so Roxy what's on your mind I don't know
20:28you know lots of stuff
20:34like oh gosh we got an hour to fill things off with some dope jams
20:41so what's your trick to save a conversation that just dies abruptly on air that's when you
20:49gotta find the door basically you need to you need to swim to shore as fast as you can
20:55uh you gotta find your way out of it
20:57thank you thank you fine I mean all we have to do is chill with the trance and then we'll be
21:04freestyle I've had a girl tell me JR your job is easy all you do is talk enthusiastically for a
21:09living and I wanted to hand her my headphones so bad and say you hop in here chick chat
21:13so I guess we chick should start chatting yeah
21:17maybe we should remind our callers that our phone lines are still open
21:25wide open I got nothing to call about they're open what's the number what's the number if you
21:34get a busy signal keep trying
21:36can you try a little harder people yeah please are you so busy hiding in your academic cocoons
21:45you have absolutely nothing to say oh here we go here we go I know answer it
21:51they gotta go to the phone lines for people not in the know what is it like to go to the phone line
21:58I've definitely done my share of taking you know calls live I've definitely experimented with that
22:03but what I find annoying about that is you're talking to the caller and you're having a conversation
22:09with them for the first time in the audiences as well right so there's a lot of back and forth
22:14and there's a lot of you know static sometimes on the line and then there's kind of that delay like
22:19hey you know uh you know hits 95.7 who's this this is Ashley oh you've basically what you want to be
22:29able to do is take that phone call record it into it into a device that we call the vox pro and
22:36basically you want to take that long phone call that you just got and condense it down to deliver the
22:42same message that the phone call is trying to deliver but in less time basically set up the
22:48call with I'm talking to Ashley she's out in Denver Ashley what's up hit hit her part oh can I hear that
22:54new one by xyz you know tell her you know whatever basically just take it condense it down condense it
23:02down and when you think you've condensed it too much try to find a couple more words to condense more
23:07sometimes I feel like I'm so buried in my books that I have no idea what's going on in the world
23:11um what should I do uh you bring up a good point Angie I mean when you think about it yeah
23:19solely moonfry punky brewster who knows more about hell the guy who reads Dante's Inferno or
23:24the guy who's living in a rat trap in Southie you're absolutely right I just think we need to
23:30find a balance in our lives right Sabrina she's starting to find it my partner agrees okay next caller
23:36talk to us Adams call it well you know it never hurts to be prepared preparation is great yep
23:43everything you always wanted to know about everything oh yeah there are some amazing facts
23:49in here I mean did you know that pirates used to wear earrings because they thought piercing their
23:52ears would improve their eyesight what I did not know that do you have like a big book or someplace
23:58where you have a bunch of ideas of things you might want to talk about on the air having a book
24:03or like you know an ongoing notepad in your phone of potential ideas and topics is a good thing
24:09especially if they're coming from real life scenarios right for example the a friend tells you they went
24:16on this terrible first date there's a great bit idea worst worst first dates uh you know somebody's
24:22dog ate their ate their phone you know there's there's a good bit idea right there so having all
24:29of that stuff in your arsenal ready to use is good but you but as prepared as you want to be for a show
24:37you don't want to go as far as writing out what you're going to say because then it doesn't seem
24:41natural it sounds like you're just reading off of a page so you want to have bullet points of what it
24:46is that you want to hit but it's up to you to figure out how to get through those points right
24:51and deliver the message you're trying to deliver so you don't have a book of pirate facts not about pirates
24:57know i do have a book full of different topic ideas different things that i think would be fun
25:02to experiment with different stories as well and i think those are invaluable to have and they're
25:08things that you can bust out at any time pro tip if you're getting into the radio industry
25:13always save your audio save every single phone call you've ever made okay because you'll be able
25:20to repurpose them down the road in different towns throughout your career next topic mental health
25:27specifically yours oh never been better right because if you haven't got your health and in
25:31that i include dental what have you got you're speaking with sabrina i am really sick of the food
25:36in the cafeteria do you know any good japanese restaurants japanese oh my could you say that in
25:45english please this is simply marvelous place downtown with vicious tip-top if i wanted to get
25:50ridiculed i would have called my mother oh great topic mothers and sons very complex relationships
25:54from oedipus to mcbeth to my mother the car speaking of cars we've seen the new gas electric
25:58hybrids they're to die for to die for oh my this is just exhausting listening did you know that's
26:03where the duck-billed platypus is from by the way did you know the duck-billed platypus is the
26:05only mammal that can lay an egg besides the mammal that's laying one right now so i'm not very good at
26:11this let's go to a musical break good idea what happened sabrina what do you think you're doing
26:18trying to be something i'm not yeah most things come really easy to me but i am not cut out to
26:23be on the radio if somebody just starts over talking on the air what do you do i try to get out i try to
26:30i try to hit the door i try to get out of the break as fast as i can and i try to like during the
26:36next song or two break down to them exactly what we're trying to accomplish here um that's when you
26:44have to you have to try to take over you have to try to you know reel somebody in you know i've had
26:50bosses throughout my career that have had to really reel me in because i can i can just get going and i
26:57can be i can be a lot sometimes steak was thinking because i'm a decent writer i'd be good on the radio
27:01yeah but you're great at this so i'm not gonna get in your way anymore sabrina this show is half
27:06yours i don't want to take it away sabrina just sit in the reaction chair just react to roxy you'll be
27:11fine hands of the very talented and witty roxy king roxy king strong name strong name and she's good
27:20you're on with roxy talk to me adams i'm a fan i'm a fan of roxy i think it's so fitting
27:32sabrina saying look i'm trying to be something that i'm not i thought this was going to be a lot
27:38easier than it actually is because she's a good writer it just it goes to show you just having an
27:45actual well like you know an actual knack for being a good conversationalist and and speaking
27:52and asking questions the way roxy did i thought she was tremendous like i could picture that as an
