00:01In tonight's Household segment, Dr. Mariana Brown talks about fainting or having a seizure,
00:06recognizing the difference and what you need to do.
00:10The following segment is brought to you by Venture Credit Union.
00:15Why just dream when you can venture?
00:27Seeing somebody lose consciousness suddenly can be frightening.
00:32In many cases, it may be fainting, known as syncope, but in other situations, it may be a seizure.
00:41Knowing the difference and knowing what to do in that moment can help protect the person and ensure that they
00:49receive the right care.
00:51Tonight on Household, we're talking about syncope versus seizure, what you need to look out for, and what you need
01:00to do when someone collapses.
01:02Both syncope and seizures involve a temporary loss of consciousness, but the reasons they occur can be very different.
01:11Syncope is essentially fainting.
01:13It occurs when there is a temporary drop in blood flow to the brain, often due to dehydration, standing for
01:22long periods, a sudden drop in blood pressure, or heart-related issues.
01:27Common warning signs of fainting include feeling lightheaded or dizzy, blurry vision, nausea, sweating, and feeling unusually weak.
01:41In many cases, the person regains consciousness within a short period of time, 30 seconds to 60 seconds.
01:49A seizure, however, occurs when there is abnormal electrical activity within the brain.
01:55Signs may include sudden loss of consciousness, jerking or shaking movements of the body, stiffness of the arms or legs,
02:06rolling back of the eyes, sudden loss of bladder control, and confusion and drowsiness after the episode.
02:15If someone loses consciousness, here are some important steps that you can take.
02:21Number one, stay calm and ensure that the person is safe.
02:26Lay them on their side when possible.
02:29This keeps their airway clear and can prevent them from choking.
02:34Loosen any tight clothing around the neck.
02:36Do not put anything in the person's mouth.
02:39And do not try to restrain them.
02:42Call for medical help or take them to the hospital if this is a first-time episode.
02:49Whether it is fainting or seizures, loss of consciousness should be taken seriously.
02:55Identifying the cause is important to prevent future episodes and to protect long-term health.
03:02If you or someone you know experiences unexplained loss of consciousness, then it's time to seek medical evaluation.
