00:00Despite being a top-performing student, say Shelly Duncan told TV6 News she never expected such a golden achievement.
00:09At her recent graduation from Signal Hill Government Primary School, she proudly collected multiple trophies, some of which she shared with us.
00:18I feel very happy and honestly I didn't think that I was going to make the placement.
00:30Because, you know, the stress of always having to do tests and everything and sometimes not scoring what I wanted.
00:40Her favorite subjects? Mathematics, creative writing and sometimes English.
00:45Say Shelly says she dreams of becoming a surgeon when she grows up.
00:50At first it was a dentist but now I want to become a surgeon.
00:55Oh, why?
00:55I want to become a surgeon because I want to help people when I get older.
01:02To other boys and girls aiming for success, her advice is simple. Set your goals and stay focused.
01:10It takes dedication, courage, independence sometimes and mostly I want to learn.
01:23But it wasn't all about the books. Say Shelly also embraced extracurricular activities, playing the national instrument, participating in church activities and going hiking.
01:36What do you want to tell mommy and daddy? Were they really strict on you in terms of lessons and times to do your work?
01:44They were kind of strict but it got the work done.
01:47I want to thank my parents for keeping me going.
01:53I want to thank my sisters for the same thing.
01:56I want to thank all of my teachers who have led me through the school, especially Miss Gopal for giving us all of these tests and motivation to do well in life.
02:07And I also want to thank God because I have prayed to him through all of my hard times and he does make things come true.
02:17The top performing schools in Tobago in order of merit are Signal Hill Government Primary School, Buku Government Primary School, Bethesda Government Primary, St. Nicholas Primary and Black Rock Government Primary Schools.
