00:00This country's new police commissioner has received his instrument of appointment.
00:04However, the police service commission says Alistair Guevara's appointment as the new top cop takes effect tomorrow, June 18th.
00:12But Mr. Guevara gave his first remarks after his appointment during an inaugural ceremony this afternoon,
00:18marking the handover of duties from the outgoing top cop to the new police commissioner.
00:23He says he wants the police service to be role models.
00:27It is time that the police service and the officers who are members of this august and esteemed body return to being role models of society.
00:42It is about time.
00:46We return to being superheroes.
00:49Every single person here today would know the name Randolph Burrows.
00:53Every person here today would know the name Cecil Carrington.
00:58These men would have labored in the vineyards for many years and they would have struggled and they would have toiled
01:05and they would have put down roots for people like me, Mr. Benjamin, Mr. Simon and other police officers
01:10so we can step forward and now have a better police service.
01:14The new top cop said in his speech that he did not want to get into details of his crime plans until he meets with the TTPS executive.
01:23He later spoke with the media and TV6, though, to find out how his experience in the special branch would influence his command of the police service.
01:31We had Ms. Anne-Marie Allen daily who would have come up to the ranks just like me and she would have acted commissioner of police for a period of time.
01:40So the acumen that the special branch would have taught and brought to the that is now present
01:44so that we can now use that to work with the public to getting the crime situation under control.
01:50Would there be a sense of a focus on intelligence gathering and the kinds of things that that's some of the work the special branch does?
01:57How soon do you plan to meet with your executive?
02:01Ah, boosting next week.
