00:00so there's really 10 features to look at when it comes to a free WordPress theme
00:05okay the first one that your theme has to have has to it has to be responsive
00:11and this means it shows up very good on a mobile device here's the thing as a
00:16February 2025 people using mobile devices contribute to around 63% of
00:23mobile traffic so most of the people that view your website is going to come
00:27from a mobile device okay back in 2011 this number sat at 6.1% big increase
00:35so if your theme is not responsive it's going to look like junk to a lot of
00:42people that view it from a mobile device so it's something you have to have you
00:48want to look at that okay all right next one is speed speed is very important
00:53okay because it's user experience I mean do you want to sit around and wait for
00:57a website to load no nobody does right this also helps you with the search
01:02engines and getting ranked so that you can get more eyeballs and views so the
01:07faster the theme is going to be the better it's going to be so that's
01:12something to look at as well it's a big big factor number three is SEO
01:16optimization and this has to do with speed but there's other factors as well such
01:22as security of the theme can play a fact with that number four is regular updates
01:29and active development things change WordPress plugins change so if a theme
01:36was last updated ten years ago that's something to go away I don't know you
01:42there might be some red flags there okay it's something to think about number five
01:46is installs if only five people have installed that theme then you're going to be the
01:50test guinea pigs so you might want to look at another theme okay all right
01:57there you go all right next one is reviews there you go it says it enough
02:01enough people are saying hey man don't do this review it's something that you know
02:05whether smoke there's fire so maybe you know looking for their theme okay there you
02:10go next one is simple and user-friendly okay yeah if it takes you you know three
02:16hours to figure out one button and one little thing that goes off then you know if it's
02:20very complicated it's gonna slow your work down you want to be simple you want to work something
02:27to think about next one is customization yeah you want you want to be able to customize it
02:33but you want to be user-friendly you want to be easy to use okay and you know so that
02:38way you could tweak it to how you like it something to think about next one is a sticky
02:44post or feature post this is prime real estate on your on your blog you want to be able to change that
02:49because you could use that well sticky pois post our feature post as a landing page to build your
02:57email list right you can use it that's your prime puppy to sell whatever you want it to do so it's
03:04something to consider but let's be honest at the end of the day it really comes down to the style
03:09I mean picking the theme it's it's almost like picking clothes that we wear so it's all a personal
03:14decision you know I might like one theme and you may like something completely different so you're
03:20gonna have to make decision on what theme you're gonna that you like and the last thing is training
03:24and customer support and this is where paid things may have an advantage because you're paying them
03:29they have an incentive to kind of give you some hands-on training that you may want or need or
