Prime Minister Stuart Young has pledged that, if the PNM is re-elected, tackling crime, strengthening the health sector, and investing in youth will be top priorities on the government's agenda.
He made the commitment while speaking at a PNM public meeting in Tunapuna last night.
00:00New crime-fighting strategies will be among the first actions of the PNM if it secures a hat-trick at the next general election, according to Prime Minister Stuart Young.
00:11Despite leading the country for the past decade, Young stressed that a PNM government now under his leadership will build on the foundation laid by previous administrations.
00:23We will appoint, as Prime Minister, I will appoint a National Security Advisor in the office of the Prime Minister.
00:30We're going to establish and strengthen an elite unit, an elite unit in the police service, where we're going to make sure they have advanced tactical training, intelligence-led operations, legislate protection for undercover officers.
00:49We are immediately going to change the law for the appointment of a Commissioner of Police because one of the difficulties we face is not having strategic and stable leadership. That is the first thing we will do as a government.
01:04He also announced plans to make access to information more affordable and easier for young people, expressing deep concern for the youth and student population.
01:16We are concerned that our young citizens in school and our students need access to the internet to navigate this world. We are concerned that some who may not be able to afford it are going to be left behind.
01:31So today I have consulted with our Minister of Digital Transformation and we will be communicating with both TSTT and Digicel to immediately reduce the cost of access to data for young citizens and to give them more access to data.
01:51On Saturday, Prime Minister Young reiterated that the PNM's manifesto, still to be fully launched, will place a strong emphasis on improving the public health sector.
02:03The next PNM government, having consideration and concern in particular about our senior citizens, we are going to expand the availability and use of virtual doctor consultations for senior citizens who want to use it so they don't have to go and sit down waiting in a healthcare centre.
