Two political heavyweights go head to head in a constituency which has been held by the UNC for decades...the margin of victory has however been decreasing election after election. Both major candidates filed nomination papers on Friday.
Transcript
00:00The battle for St. Augustine is on. MP Khadija Amin has successfully filed her nomination papers for the constituency she has served for the past electoral term.
00:11Now she believes she will serve her constituents while in government.
00:15And as an MP going into government now, I am ready to hit the road so that the moment we are elected and our new government is sworn in, I as an MP, I don't have to go to look to see what the needs of the people are because I've spent the last five years doing that.
00:33Flanked by her mother and her son, she tells the voting public to be wary of PNM propaganda.
00:39PNM knows this. They know that the writing is on the wall and they are going to lose the next general election.
00:45What you are seeing from the PNM now is desperation.
00:49They are coming with lies. They are coming with mama guys.
00:52They are coming to fool people.
00:54Paying $1 million to the diverse families after years of begging, begging, begging.
01:00We are seeing them now coming to tell pensioners, don't worry.
01:03We are seeing them coming to us with new initiatives for pride and equality.
01:08And I ask, why didn't you do it in the last 10 years?
01:11Meanwhile, it was a peaceful affair as the UNC and the PNM bounced up on the junction.
01:17As political opponent Renuka Sagram Singh Sooklal arrived, she congratulated both sides for the maturity displayed.
01:25Here you have two major political parties meeting at the doorstep of nomination and not one casualty to report.
01:34And I want to remind the people of Trinidad and Tobago how so very blessed we still are to live in this country.
01:41Because Ms. Amin is my political opponent. There were supporters who believe in her and I have my supporters who believe in me.
01:47Sagram Singh Sooklal reported a good nomination process and says she can bring to the lower house exactly what she brought to the upper house.
01:56And I believe, I'm not tooting my own horn, I believe I've served with distinction.
02:01Today there is nothing that can be said apart from the propaganda that we know exists.
02:06There's nothing that can be said about my character, about the values that I've stood and continue to stand by.
02:13And all of that being said, I believe that is what I will bring to the constituency of St. Augustine.
02:18A breath of fresh air.
