The Opposition Leader says her party is seeing a large number of people seeking to be selected as candidates for the UNC in the General Election due this year.
Transcript
00:00There's a lot of people, we have over 200 persons have put their names forward to be
00:06considered as nominees, so it does take us some time.
00:09Even for some of these seats, we may not get through with all of them in one sitting.
00:14Opposition leader Kamala Prasad was asked as she spoke before her party, the United
00:18National Congress, commenced screening nominees for two constituencies on Friday night, Naparima
00:24and Chagones West.
00:26Just one day earlier, on former Minister of the People, Dr. Glenn Ramadarsingh's podcast,
00:31former National Security Minister and former Chagones West MP, Jack Warner, called on the
00:36UNC to select its, quote, candidates very early, so they can walk in the communities,
00:41they can meet their financiers and so on, so they can have a head start, end quote.
00:47Attorney-at-law Dinesh Rambali is the MP for Chagones West.
00:51I do believe that for Chagones West, yes, Mr. Rambali is coming to be, or indicated
00:57he would attend to be screened.
00:59So they will expect that all the persons, nominees who come forward, we'll give them
01:03a fair hearing and make the decision at the end of the day in the best interest of our
01:07party and, of course, in the best interest of the country.
01:10Former Ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations, Rodney Charles, is the
01:14outgoing MP for Naparima.
01:16The Naparima seat, the former MP, or sitting MP, has not put his name forward to be screened.
01:23So obviously there will be a new person screened out of the many, will be chosen one to represent
01:28Naparima.
01:29Mr. Spasalbas also gave an update for the UNC's screening exercises for two other constituencies
01:35represented in the Parliament by Dr. Lakram Budo and Michelle Benjamin, respectively.
01:41Continued with Faisalabad, we had one outstanding nominee there, we completed that.
01:46Moruga Tableland, I had to meet the executives and the chairman and the councillors from
01:50Moruga Tableland, so those seats will be declared very soon.
01:54We completed that exercise for those two and some others will be named in due course.
02:00The opposition leader saw this date as being significant, as she predicted the outcome
02:04of the general election due this year.
02:06We celebrate 15 years of the leadership of the UNC and if history repeats itself, 2010,
02:1424 January I became the leader of this party, and by May our party became the ruling party
02:21in government.
02:22So we will repeat that history in this year, 2025, and you can see the amount of interest
02:26there is in the party, you can see all our activists out here.
02:30So I want to thank all those who have come out, all those who have put their names forward
02:34for screening, and you can see there's a lot of them.
02:37I hope that they leave as happy as when they came here at the end of the day.
02:42The Prime Minister has yet to call the date for the 2025 general election.
02:45However, the PNM has selected 34 candidates thus far to contest the 41 constituencies
02:52in Trinidad and Tobago.
