The Commonwealth Observer Group announced their preliminary findings of the general election during a media conference to Di.
00:08
There were no queues at the close of polls at 6 p.m. at most polling stations, we observed.
00:16
While we noted some inconsistencies in the administration of the counting process,
00:21
however, we observed that polling officials followed closing and counting procedures in a transparent and professional manner.
00:32
Conclusion and the post-election period.
00:34
We applaud the people of Trinidad and Tobago for turning out in an elderly manner to exercise their franchise.
00:42
We commend the Elections and Boundaries Commission, polling staff, political parties, police and the media
00:48
for their respective roles in ensuring the successful conduct of the Elections.
00:55
The chairperson of the Commonwealth Observer Group said the teams were deployed in four regions.
01:00
The polling officials followed pre-poll and opening procedures diligently.
01:07
Polling stations observed opened on time.
01:10
We know that voters' lists were prominently displaced at polling centres.
01:14
Voting was conducted in a peaceful environment at polling stations that we observed.
01:21
Polling officials must be commended for conducting their duties with professionalism and transparency.
01:29
A word now about the political party agents.
01:32
Political party agents were present at most polling stations observed by the group.
01:37
And they conducted themselves professionally.
01:40
However, the Commonwealth Observer Group also took notes with regard to factors that might have contributed
01:47
to the voter turnout yesterday.
01:50
The group heard from various stakeholders it meant that there is a need to build youth confidence
01:56
and participation in democratic and electoral institutions and processes.
02:02
This might have contributed to low voter interest as compared to previous elections.
02:08
The group recommends that measures be considered to promote greater civic participation in the electoral process
02:17
by engaging with civil society groups and allowing continuous voter education and awareness.
