03:36Da-da-da-da-da.
03:37It's the one and only DRE.
03:45Welcome to Beyond the Tape.
03:56I'm your host, Marc Bessant.
03:58Welcome to our viewers across Trinidad and Tobago and our global viewers.
04:03It's day 89 of the state of emergency.
04:06And unfortunately, last night, we had three homicides.
04:10Two in the Digger Marting area.
04:12I believe the victims are Brandon Shockness and Keegan Francis.
04:16Gopal Avenue.
04:18And there was another fatal shooting in the Freeport area.
04:2321-year-old Nekosi Sinaswi.
04:26So certainly, that pushed the murder count to 97 for the year.
04:32Unfortunately, for the corresponding period last year,
04:36as of this date, we had approximately 131 homicides last year.
04:42And of course, today we have with us a gentleman
04:45who has been trying to shape the young minds of the young men out there.
04:50And trying to make them make better choices in life.
04:53None other than Sergeant Derek Shabody of the St. James Police Youth Club.
04:58Welcome, sir. How are you?
04:59Well, blessings to you and yours.
05:01And I'm indeed grateful.
05:03Because of reports like this.
05:05You know, Shockness and young men being bullied.
05:08It gives you a greater energy to go out and save these children.
05:13When you hear reports of three and four.
05:15And Shockness was well known to the officers in Digger Marting.
05:19You follow, he had a track record.
05:21But the thing about it, he attracted a certain element.
05:24And it gives you a greater drive to say, look what's going on.
05:30And remind young people, this is not how you're going to end up.
05:33This is not what God has planned for you.
05:35So I'm trusting that probably with incidents like this,
05:38young people get a shock therapy.
05:40Wake up and say, hey, let me get my act together.
05:42Strange things happen.
05:44You know, to young people to catch themselves, unfortunately.
05:48And I know we're going to be talking about this in the second segment.
05:51I'll be sure, you know, with all these illicit firearms.
05:54We see this initiative, this partnership between Crimestoppers
05:59and the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
06:01In trying to rid the country of illicit firearms.
06:05And this reward process for information about, you know,
06:09specific weapons and different types of weapons.
06:13You will be monetarily rewarded.
06:17Crimestoppers need to be saluted.
06:19They have an outstanding track record.
06:21They don't talk about privacy.
06:25You could do your own checks and balance.
06:28And we need to applaud Crimestoppers.
06:30And when we talk about multi-pronged approach,
06:32this is what we're talking about.
06:34Businessmen and organizations coming on board saying,
06:36hey, how do we get guns out in the hands of young people?
06:40You know, these high-powered weapons.
06:43There's an incentive.
06:45There's a reward.
06:47And therefore, it's a step in the right direction.
06:49And we need to applaud all the board of directors
06:51and those who are responsible
06:54for meeting and working in concert with the police
06:56in terms of getting these guns off the streets,
06:58out to the community,
07:00and by extension, out of our nation.
07:02I know you wanted to extend some greetings
07:04to various personnel.
07:06Yes, yes.
07:08My son would be remiss of me not to recognize
07:10our Muslim brothers and sisters,
07:12the Muslim community.
07:14I know that you have a long weekend.
07:16You'll be going to the beach?
07:18No beach? All right.
07:20So I just want to, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police
07:22and the Executive HR Department,
07:24I want to wish all my Muslim brothers
07:26and the Muslim community a happy Eid.
07:28And of course,
07:30the Spiritual Baptists,
07:32the Shouter Baptists,
07:34we also want to wish them
07:36a very spiritual and holy...
07:38You know, this country has to be a blessed country
07:40to have so many different religious organizations.
07:42Indeed.
07:44It is a model country.
07:46You know, when you look at international news,
07:48you see this group and that group,
07:51you know, we have to really thank God
07:53for so many different religious groups
07:55and the culture and the
07:57prowess of what we do.
07:59You know, you can have a Chinese food,
08:01you can have a little East Indian food.
08:03If you don't like East Indian food,
08:05you can go to a little Pilau.
08:07There's so many you can take from.
08:09And it's all because of, you know,
08:11we honor and we respect each other's faiths.
08:13And I want to send best wishes
08:15to the Shouter Baptists.
08:17You know, take me back a little bit quickly
08:20to when you go to Thanksgiving.
08:22You know that drums
08:24at one time was illegal?
08:26Yeah, in Trinidad?
08:28Yeah, drums was illegal.
08:30Drums is in churches, it's all over.
08:32In fact, we do a lot of drumming in the club.
08:34It's a beautiful instrument.
08:36And I thank God for
08:38when my mother would send me to Thanksgiving.
08:40Oh Lord, when I get back
08:42and put home and sweaty and toughy
08:44and, you know, the energy
08:46and I'm grateful that I was able to
08:48see every religion has respect.
08:50I was an acolyte at Rosary Boys.
08:52And being an acolyte,
08:54it teaches you respect.
08:56I went to the Advantage Church,
08:58the Pentecostal Church.
09:00So you have a great appreciation
09:02for that sense of what the churches bring.
09:04And the churches play an important role
09:06in the fight against crime.
09:08So to the Spiritual Baptists,
09:10we want to salute you.
09:12A very happy Spiritual Baptists Day
09:14and to our Muslim brothers and sisters,
09:17It's a beautiful holiday
09:19as we continue to embrace all our religious groups
09:21on behalf of the commissioner,
09:23the executives,
09:25and the Trinidad Police Service.
09:27Alright, so it's day 89
09:29of the state of emergency
09:31and we want to just take a look at the numbers
09:33up to day 89.
09:35We have number of operations
09:374,397.
09:39Target of priority offenders
09:413,098.
09:43Searches conducted 30,681.
09:45Traffic operations 3,979.
09:47Total persons arrested
09:493,421.
09:51Traffic offenses detected
09:5315,128.
09:55168 firearms
09:57recovered thus far.
09:593,583
10:01ammunition recovered
10:03and of course under dangerous
10:05drug seized thus far
10:07475,472
10:09grams of cannabis or marijuana.
10:113,476
10:14grams of cocaine
10:168 grams of ecstasy
10:188.8 grams of Xanax
10:2053.5 grams of molly
10:22and 5 grams of crystal meth
10:24as the police continue
10:26their operations across the island.
10:28Wow, it tells you the amount
10:30of cleanup that has to be done
10:32and we have to thank members of the public
10:34who continue to provide intelligence
10:36and the information.
10:38You know, I'm grateful
10:40for when people would have called
10:43and have this information
10:45and they feel satisfied
10:47by providing that information
10:49they don't put themselves at risk
10:51and therefore we are grateful
10:53but the fight must continue
10:55we must take the fight to them
10:57and all those figures we see
10:59I want to salute
11:01the first responders, police officers
11:03who jump in your vehicle
11:05and say their prayers
11:07and you don't know if they're coming back
11:09and God continues to protect them
11:11At one time we used to call the police service
11:13police officers
11:15and then of course
11:17transformation
11:19and times have changed
11:21and the police officers understand
11:23the environment and how toxic
11:25and the kind of items they use
11:27and these fellows are not playing
11:29you know, they're haters
11:31and therefore all the figures
11:33that we're seeing speaks
11:35that the police service is working
11:37due diligence
11:40and we want to thank
11:42all those who continue
11:44to provide information
11:46intelligence
11:48so the police service will continue the good fight
11:50and of course
11:52our Defence Force personnel
11:54Yes, certainly
11:56Alright, let's take a look now at our headlines
12:10Police Operations
12:12Police in Kosovo
12:14Police in Yemen
12:16Police in Jordan
12:18Police in Bengal
12:20Police in Dubai
12:22Police in...
12:24in...
12:26in...
12:28in...
12:30in...
12:32So those are some of the headlines within the past
12:3424 hours and of course
12:36we talk about police operations
12:38about police on the ground and we have a video of a police chase where in the
12:45Karapa area where a suspect was detained sometime yesterday following a short
12:51chase with the police. I suppose he might have been wanted for something or he was
12:58evading police after something might have happened previously and of course
13:04the vehicle ended up in a drain there. He was apprehended and later taken into
13:11police custody. Thank God there is no member of the public or standby didn't
13:16meet their fate with the vehicle you know and we need to continue to promote
13:21that and not that there's only illegal activities going on but there are
13:25consequences for those illegal activities. If I am doing something
13:29illegal and at the end of the day there is no consequences then fine but these
13:34are some of the consequences. You'll be caught, you'll be placed before the you know
13:37before the court etc. You'll be incarcerated and a number of different
13:43things and sometimes these fellows you know you know your conscience
13:47bothering you, the police passing and you take off. You gotta know, the police
13:52paying attention sometimes but you know sometimes you're involved in legal
13:55activities, you take off and we want to salute the policemen for doing good job
14:00and you know chase, they've been chased behind a vehicle. You also have to be very
14:05tactful because you don't want you know pedestrians and people using the road
14:10run afoul of someone 14-8 armed, crash or accident. So the police officers who
14:16drive the vehicle also have to be mindful, hey while we are at a chase we don't want
14:21any innocent bystanders or people who using the public road become fatal as
14:28a result of the 14-8 chase. So we salute officers for that. Yes indeed.
14:33Alright we're going to take a short break and we'll be back, stay with us.

18:28Welcome back to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host Mark Bassan, joined today by
18:32Sergeant Shabody from the St. James Police Youth Club and we know we were
18:37talking about the gun retrieval program that the TTPS and the Crime
18:44Supporters have partnered with. And I know we have had 168 firearms seized thus far
18:49during the state of emergency and at the press conference yesterday, Acting
18:54Commissioner of Police Mr. Benjamin said that he's hopeful before the state of
19:00emergency ends on April 13th, that they can possibly get another 100
19:06firearms, illegal firearms off the street. Do you see this program as a very
19:13beneficial one going up, going forward into the next couple of weeks?
19:16Well certainly, you know, we have to start with the positive and we have to start
19:21with the fact that the Commissioner, when he's speaking, he's speaking to all the
19:25law-abiding citizens. He's speaking to all those who come to you to work in
19:29concert with you. He's saying, listen, we are doing well. Crime Stoppers is giving
19:33incentives, is giving reward. We need your help. We are asking you to continue. We
19:38want a hundred more plus, you know, to come out your streets. You will be safe.
19:42Your children will be safe. And you see, once you put it to the people that safety
19:46in the community is paramount and safety within the home, people will buy into
19:51that. But if you're talking about your safety and my safety, then fine. But if
19:54it's a collective effort and understanding that the gun, the gun that
19:59they're using, there's something called a stray bullet. There's something called the
20:03wrong place at the wrong time. How many times we are innocent by standards.
20:06People who are probably moving, unknown, probably got a, you know, unfortunate
20:12experience with these guns in them. So to Mr. Carmichael and Mr. James
20:17Deavers, Mr. Abboud and Mr. Shaw, you have to applaud them. They are saying we
20:23would like to get these guns off and we are making a stake. We are making, we are
20:28not just saying that we are crime stoppers and that's it. But we want to
20:31make sure the people understand that we are playing a important role in terms of
20:36addressing. You get the guns out, then that's 90% of the problems. You see, the
20:42issue is, is that when a young man receives a high-powered rifle, you
20:49understand, he feels that he's a different type of God. He's vicious, you
20:54understand? And therefore, if it is, I don't have access to firearms, then I
21:00would have to go on another way in terms of resolving my conflict. But if guns
21:03are easy to get, easy access, just a phone call, then that's madness. A simple
21:09argument, simple quarrel, and a man's going to make a phone call. It's as though that
21:14some people have gone main on emergency standby. In case they have a conflict,
21:18they're going to call the people. And that is something that we need to
21:22understand. Like you, of course, I speak to a number of underworld persons because that is
21:26part of my job. I talk to people on both sides of the fence, and we know that
21:31is how they operate. As you said, it's just a phone call, and you know, somebody's
21:37fell out of somebody, send them for X, Y, or Z, as the case may be. And certainly, you know, the
21:44choice of weaponry now is the high-powered weapons, the AR-15s and so on.
21:49And, you know, I think that this particular illegal gun removal
21:55program is a step in the right direction that the Crime Stoppers have
22:01partnered with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service. And of course, you need
22:05the community to also be part and parcel of that. In the state of emergency, if we
22:11know X has 10 guns, and we know for sure we've seen the guns in the backyard or
22:18something, you know, the police don't need a warrant to go into the house. They
22:22can just go and find the firearms, person can be arrested. Of course, for those
22:28who provide that kind of tangible and real information, you're credited or
22:34monetarily, that is, you're rewarded with, you know, monies for the various types of
22:40firearms, the rifles being 7,000, the pistols being 4,000, yeah, and so on. So I
22:48think it's really a good way to incentivize the public in helping take
22:53rid of our streets of illegal firearms. And Crime Stoppers go for the net, eh?
22:57Because I've been doing good work with them. If you want to establish a neighborhood watch
23:00group, Crime Stoppers. If you want to use technology, you want to make sure your
23:04cameras are located in strategic Crime Stoppers. So Crime Stoppers has so many
23:09different rules, and at the end of the day, once our community's safe, our
23:13children are safe, and our homes are safe, it's about safer communities, safer homes,
23:18and a safer space, where our children can play and not be looking over their back,
23:22because somebody has some pick, pick some fight with somebody, and the weapon of
23:28choice is an AR-15. That's madness. Must say no to that. And you know, we always say
23:34that, you know, with the advent of those scanners, now at the ports, where we have
23:40seen a proliferation of these firearms coming in at legal ports within the last
23:45two to three years, more pronounced rather than through the back gate, so to
23:50speak. So it will obviously assist the law enforcement agencies in trying to
23:57find out where exactly, not just, we know not the guys on the street, but who's the
24:01big fish. That's right. So you're only looking at those at the community level who have the
24:06guns, but you're going at the head. You're looking at the supplier, demand and
24:10supply. If there is no demand, the supplier will flee. You follow? And therefore, you
24:15have to address both demand and supply, and you have to continue to educate the
24:19community in terms of their role, and you have to make sure that people feel a
24:23sense of safety. I can give information, and it's safe. I can go to Crime Stoppers,
24:29and therefore, I'm not worrying in terms of where this information is going. Crime
24:33Stoppers have an excellent track record, and therefore, it's an avenue. It's all
24:37part of a multi-pronged approach in addressing and fighting crime
24:41effectively, getting guns out of the community. Yes, and just a reminder, for
24:47every legal firearm, a rifle, you are given $7,000. For shotguns, $5,000
24:54each, and for handguns or pistols, the information, once it's tangible, you're
24:59given $4,000 each. So can you imagine, somebody calls and says, you know, I
25:05understand X has ten rifles, and the police get there, and they actually find
25:11ten rifles. That's right. It's a reward. Yes, yes, things looking nice, and it tells you, thank you
25:17very much. We are indeed grateful. So they're giving you something to continue good work,
25:22and we appeal to people to form these kind of groups and set yourself up to
25:27make sure it is a sad day when you have people come out and saying, a black
25:32car just passed and two got killed. You know, that is, we have to stop that. We have to

28:10The following is a paid political advertisement.
28:15When I said, light them up and empty the clip. Of course, if a man is there over your wife, raping your wife.
28:21What are you going to do? Empty the clip. Someone is there raping your daughter.
28:25What do you do? Stand up and watch and say, no, no, the law says I must use reasonable force.
28:29I'll push him over with my hand. No. I stand by empty the clip.
28:33And I stand by also giving law-abiding citizens the right to be honest.
28:41Time to rise up TNT. Vote UNC.
28:45That was a paid political advertisement.

29:21It starts here. With the Trinidad Express Newspapers.
29:37Welcome back to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host, Mark Besant.
29:50And of course, with me today is Sergeant Shabody of the St. James Police Youth Club.
29:56As we continue our series, a voice of the people getting their opinions, their suggestions and how we can fight that crime situation that we have here in Trinidad and Tobago.
30:06Let's take a look.
30:26Mr. Brown, have you ever been a victim of crime in this country?
30:30No.
30:31What's your thoughts on the crime situation in Trinidad and Tobago?
30:35I think it's gone beyond for a small country. Something urgent needed to be done.
30:45What would you suggest or recommend?
30:49Well, I think you utilize the services more. The police have to be more active. The soldiers have to be more active.
30:59For example, in areas like Charlotte Street, Prince Street, Queen Street, going backward, right?
31:07I think, in my estimation, they should have foot police and foot soldiers. In short pants, in athletic departments.
31:16So when these guys grab people's stuff and run in, they can stop it. Particularly up to 7 o'clock.
31:23So they work maybe 4 to 7 more whenever and shift. So once you have guys who can run on people and hold them with weapons, that could sort of help.
31:33And not just in port.
31:35In areas of difficulty, you know what I mean? Trinidad is too small. It's affecting the country psychologically, economically.
31:44A lot of people would like to come to Carnival and have a good time and free. You come for entertainment.
31:51So it's affecting the economy.
31:54Do you feel safe at home or when you come out to lime, when you come out to work or do business?
32:01Well, I feel safe anyway because I work with God. And I think what has to happen, has to happen.
32:09I'm here because you know, you're out here so long in Trinidad and Tobago and you know from how it was before and how it is now.
32:16I don't see no reason for you to fear.
32:19What do you do differently to safeguard yourself?
32:22Well, I just, nothing different, you know. My normal schedule, I haven't changed anything. I just work positive, you know what I mean?
32:29You know, I don't go in areas that I don't have to go, you know?
32:33So I don't do anything specific, you know?
32:36I believe, I read, I believe what is to happen will happen.
32:39I'm not afraid of anything because I know how you're to go, you're to go.
32:46Accident, incident or natural causes, I might believe. No fear, you know?
32:51What do you think makes persons want to become a criminal in this country?
32:56Well, a lot of factors, right? Trinidadians are copycats.
33:01They look at situations abroad and they imitate it.
33:05Also, the weakness of the father, the absence of the father in a home, make a lot of other things.
33:11The absence of the father in a home and the unreal fathers, you know?
33:14Guys young, they're just having children, they can't guide them.
33:17The mother young, no experience.
33:19So you need fathers like in Middle East who, hey, you can get licking, you know?
33:24You know, they take away rights from you.
33:27But lack of fathers, lack of mature fathers and mature mother, you know?
33:33Do you think there's a connection between crime and poverty in Trinidad and Tobago?
33:39Of course, you know, of course.
33:41Some people have to hustle, you know what I mean?
33:44And when they can't hustle, after getting bored of hustling, they might look for a quicker way, you know?
33:49So I think it's important.
33:50You know, poverty always make the man think, well, what's now?
33:53I ain't have no food on the table, I have to mind my family, so I have to go and look for it, you know?
33:57So there's a lot of factors, you know?
33:59A lot of factors that cause crime.
34:02But in Trinidad, you know, I think the military people need to work a little harder.
34:07Get a little more respect, you know?
34:09And when you come out and you put 24 hours on, you'll be serious.
34:12Don't be part of the situation, you know?
34:14Don't be part of the situation, you know?
34:17Then we go get respect, you know?
34:19What would you rate the effectiveness of the Trinidad Tobago police service in fighting crime?
34:24Well, I think generally, the police service is good.
34:28Generally, you just have some rotten apples that you need to get rid of.
34:33So I think generally, the military is good.
34:37But the management of the military just needs to up.
34:40We have good military, we got fellas who seriously care about the country, you know?
34:45And it's just the effectiveness of the military.
34:49But I think I'll give the military 80 to 85%, you know?
34:54And 10% might be just, you know, which you'll find in any part of the world, you know?
35:00I think Trinidad is a good place.
35:02And once the politicians do what they're supposed to do and start playing politics, you know?
35:06Country first before politics, then everything could improve, you know?
35:10Definitely.
35:12If you see something, would you say something?
35:16Depending on where I see it, you understand?
35:18Because you got to be smart, you know?
35:20You got to be smart.
35:21Because when you say something, according to the person and the environment,
35:25somebody could come, you understand?
35:27You got to be smart and intelligent, you know?
35:29You can't get hurt for nothing, you know?
35:32You give your opinion about certain things and everybody is entitled to their opinion.
35:38But in terms of making a particular choice that is dangerous to you and your family,
35:43it doesn't make sense because the situation is not changing.
35:46I live abroad, you know?
35:48I see cities, you know?
35:51I travel all over the world, you know?
35:53So we have to put in the hard work here.
35:55We need hard work.
35:56We need more people for the country, you know?
36:00Who are not just talking and politics.
36:03Because we're one.
36:04Black, white, Indian, we're one Trinidadians.
36:07And when we look at that and start playing politics, then things will improve.
36:13Voice of the people.
36:14The man said stop playing politics, you know?
36:17It's important.
36:18And we're in that season now where we are in the midst of the political season.
36:23Excellent segment.
36:24When you engage members of the public on the ground and you hear some of the contributions,
36:30that is where some of the answers.
36:32It cannot be only at the top.
36:33And there's an excellent segment.
36:35The gentleman spoke about spirituality.
36:37He talked about planting, plain clothes, policemen, you know?
36:40What's going on with the snatching, more soldiers and police, more visibility, you know?
36:44And all that could form part of the man on the ground giving information, giving solutions.
36:51And it's an excellent segment.
36:53I want to commend him.
36:54He still gives police officers applause.
36:56He said there are good police officers.
36:58However, we have some unfortunate ones who are misrepresenting bad actors, as it was called.
37:04We commend these soldiers.
37:05And, of course, the media.
37:06So I want to commend this segment.
37:08I think more people need to get involved because we need to feel appreciated.
37:12What do you think about crime?
37:13How can we solve crime?
37:15That is where the answer is.
37:16And I want to commend the—who is the person who was instrumental?
37:22I commend you.
37:23I want to commend you.
37:24Excellent.
37:25It's a joint effort.
37:26Team up Beyond the Tape, Jackie, and others, and the cameraman as well.
37:30Take over.
37:31Excellent.
37:32Excellent segment.
37:33Definitely.
37:34And we hope to hear more opinions and suggestions in the coming weeks from personnel across Trinidad and Tobago.
37:40We're going to take a short break, and we'll be back.
37:42Stay with us.

39:50The following is a paid political advertisement.
39:56I retired in 2002.
39:59When I retired, my pension was $1,000 from NIS.
40:04When my successor came into power in 2010, my pension was still $3,000.
40:11Now I'm here in PNMC, if you have money saved, they could take away your pension.
40:16I can't wait to vote UNC again.

41:06Welcome back to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host, Mark Bassan, joined today by Sgt. Chabuddy of the St. James Police Youth Club.
41:13And we have a video here, apparently a driver, a forklift driver, saved a car from burning in the last hour or so.
41:25It was well ablaze there.
41:27As you can see, this is in the DB area.
41:30Taking over the last, I'm seeing SSA Renewal destroying, but I think the vehicle next door to the vehicle that's on fire.
41:39And then the forklift driver comes to the scene.
41:43Considering it's also dangerous. Of course, the vehicle has some kind of burn damage.
41:47Yes.
41:48But, you know, I think it's a good thing.
41:52It's a good thing.
41:53It's a good thing.
41:54It's a good thing.
41:55It's a good thing.

42:21It's a good thing.
42:22It's a good thing.
42:23It's a good thing.
42:24It's a good thing.
42:25It's a good thing.

42:45It's a good thing.
42:46It's a good thing.
42:47It's a good thing.

42:55It's a good thing.
42:56It's a good thing.
42:57It's a good thing.
42:58It's a good thing.
42:59It's a good thing.
43:00It's a good thing.
43:01It's a good thing.
43:02It's a good thing.
43:03It's a good thing.
43:04It's a good thing.
43:05It's a good thing.
43:06It's a good thing.
43:07It's a good thing.
43:08It's a good thing.
43:09It's a good thing.
43:10It's a good thing.
43:11It's a good thing.
43:12It's a good thing.
43:13It's a good thing.
43:14It's a good thing.
43:15It's a good thing.
43:16It's a good thing.
43:17It's a good thing.
43:18It's a good thing.
43:19It's a good thing.
43:20It's a good thing.
43:21It's a good thing.
43:22It's a good thing.
43:23It's a good thing.
43:24It's a good thing.
43:25It's a good thing.
43:26It's a good thing.
43:27It's a good thing.
43:28And the other flip side of that, you know, we have persons who are trying to break the
43:32law.
43:33And they were caught last night in the trying to break into a business place along Prince
43:39Street using a bolt cutter, you know, through the burglar proofing there, trying to get
43:48into the store.
43:49And I believe two suspects were held in reference to this break in here.
43:54Look at that.
43:55Look at the size of that bolt cutter, Sergeant.
43:57So the fact that they came with a bolt cutter, it means that they went and view the premises,
44:04the structure, and what is required to enter.
44:06They didn't walk with a bolt cutter by accident.
44:08No, they didn't.
44:09Right.
44:10They were monitoring.
44:11They knew exactly what they wanted to do.
44:12But thankful, you know, with vigilance and police, and they were able to make an arrest.
44:18Yes.
44:19And also, we were able to make an example in terms of porous pin and members of the
44:25vendors.
44:26People work very hard, you know.
44:27Yeah, indeed.
44:28People come out four or five in the morning.
44:30They work very hard.
44:31They have to pay rent.
44:32They have to, you know, they have to up and down.
44:35And then after you come and you break in my place, you take the little that I have.
44:39You know, it's really, really hard.
44:41And the more porous pin and the businessmen come together, they will make a statement
44:45in terms of saying, not here.
44:47Not on this street.
44:48Not at this hour.
44:49Security is getting a very costly thing now, you know.
44:51Very.
44:52You have to do so many things.
44:53You know, you have to have security guards, burglar proofing, even have life security
44:57on compound.
44:58Even when you're closed.
44:59Yes.
45:00You know, depending on the nature of your business.
45:02And then, of course, we also have, you know, we've been talking about road safety time
45:07and time again.
45:08And there was a road traffic accident today along the Mondesi stretch there.
45:16It seemed that at least two vehicles.
45:21Really, I mean, speed is another factor, Sergeant Sabadi, that we have to remind people about.
45:27Yeah, there's been reckless, no care for life.
45:31No care that you're sharing the road with other citizens and, you know, you're on the
45:35black carpet and therefore, what is the rush about?
45:39You know, and these cars are so light.
45:40Yes.
45:41I mean, just look at the injury.
45:43This one looks like a six seater.
45:45There's another one there and I think one near the fire truck.
45:48So, at least three vehicles involved in this collision and we're hopeful and look at the
45:53impact that this vehicle was hit from the side there.
45:57Yes.
45:58In tantamount to some element of speed.
45:59And then there's this, what looks like a seven seater there in the middle of the roadway.
46:04Yes.
46:05And another vehicle a little bit up.
46:08So, please, we implore you for this long weekend, especially, Sergeant Sabadi, please be safe
46:14on the roads.
46:15Don't drink and drive.
46:16Observe the speed limit.
46:18If you have to drink, drink water.
46:22Or if you have to drink at all, get a driver that's not drinking.
46:26Well said.
46:27Well said.
46:28So, we are in the midst of elections and I think you would want to just bring that element
46:34of, you know, how people should be acting as we go into these next couple of weeks.
46:41Just educate the public first.
46:43Well, I don't know who coined the phrase silly season, but by its very definition, you can
46:48understand what silly means.
46:49Yes.
46:50And we have had, for those who are old like you and old like me, and in the business,
46:56we know the unfortunate trappings of election and people getting hyper and making stupid
47:04comments and doing things that are not within the law.
47:07And we've seen that good sense prevail.
47:09Conduct yourself in a civilized way.
47:12We have international observers coming on to look.
47:14You know, that our marking, we have such, you know, that trying to be able to get an
47:18excellent mark.
47:19And even though it is competitive, and even though we are in the hustlings, we ask people
47:23to give people their space, show due respect, allow people to speak, allow people to give
47:29their opinion.
47:30You know, and if you feel that, okay, we can disagree to agree respectfully and move on.
47:35You know, show a sense of unity, even though it is a time when we are competing.
47:40Show a sense of love still.
47:42One love.
47:43Yes.
47:44You know, so we appeal to those who are even the instigators, because a lot of instigators
47:49who would employ to do stupid things, you know, look, so-and-so come in, so-and-so
47:53come in.
47:54You know, let them know that is not what we are about.
47:57Let's hear what you have to say.
47:58Let's have a discussion with them.
47:59And so the young people who are looking on, because there is a data showing that young
48:05people are pulling away from politics.
48:08So if we want to encourage the youth to participate, it must be civilized.
48:12It must be a space where, okay, you have your opinion, I have mine.
48:16And at the end of the day, we conduct ourselves in a respectful manner.
48:19At the end of the day, we are all Trinidad and Tobagoans, and we are all one of the best
48:23in this country.
48:25And as a member of the protective service, and certainly as other officers will appeal
48:29to you, is that we don't want to get no report.
48:32To be part of any fight, and we want to know that even though the police presence is there,
48:37there'll be no need to, the officers is just there to give a presence, and that's, however,
48:42the people have conducted themselves well, and we know that we can point and we can salute
48:48and say, this was an excellent 28th of April, we move on, and we give respect where respect
48:54is due.
48:55Yes.
48:56We all have free choice, and I know we all like a variety of food.
48:59Oh yes.
49:00You can choose what you like.
49:01Oh yes.
49:02At the end of the day, respect that person's choice, because come April 29th, we still
49:06have to go there to work, we still have to exist as one as a country.
49:09We're going to take a short break, and we'll be back, stay with us.
49:36That was a paid political advertisement.

53:00I'm your host, Mark Bussan, joined today by Sergeant Shabby of the St. James Police Youth Club.
53:05And I know you have a couple of closing notes there to give us.
53:09Yes, I just want to thank the Arima Centenary Primary School.
53:14They came down in their numbers.
53:16They have selected me as their national hero.
53:18Oh, nice.
53:19You know, it was absolutely beautiful.
53:20The kids in them, they didn't want to leave.
53:22I want to thank Ms. Byer and the whole team that came down.
53:26Pastor Dutton, Mr. James Devers, members of the Parent Council.
53:31You know, we had drumming, we had dance, we had poetry.
53:34You know, the kids truly enjoyed themselves.
53:36And I thank them very much.
53:38They could have honored anybody else and they chose to honor me.
53:41I want to thank the school for their gifts and for the love.
53:45You know, when young people say, you're my national hero, it speaks volumes.
53:48It does.
53:49It does indeed.
53:50Yeah, it is.
53:51It's a lot of friends.
53:52Also, I want to say a special congratulations to Acting Sergeant Bruce.
53:55She is the head of our Western Division, Community Policing.
53:58And she's now acting and I want to commend her.
54:00Good.
54:01Worked very, very hard.
54:02Congratulations, sir.
54:03Congratulations to all.
54:04So, we have selected a new parent body because we feel if the parent is not involved,
54:09then there's very little we can do in terms of transforming our young people.
54:13So, to Ms. Christine Kwasi Shabadi, President.
54:16Ms. Beverly Jones, Vice President.
54:18We have a couple coming from the Port Authority, Vice President.
54:21Ms. Andrews, Ms. James.
54:23A whole lot of people coming forward and saying,
54:25I want to be part and parcel of this proactive approach.
54:28So, I want to congratulate the Parent Council.
54:31We have an Easter Camp coming up from the 14th to the 26th.
54:35So, when school close, get your children involved in our Easter Camp.
54:39And if you cannot come down to St. James,
54:41you have police clubs all over at the national level.
54:44Go and find out what they're doing during the Easter period
54:47and get your children involved in that two weeks.
54:52It is a rewarding two weeks.
54:54It is a time where the kids benefit from our Dawn Aid activities
54:58and by extension, a lot of creative activities as well.
55:02We want to salute all the volunteers who every year come on board and salute.
55:07I think we'll be visiting TV6 and looking at the studio.
55:10I try and see cameras and how things are done,
55:13you know, and probably say, welcome to the people.
55:16So, I just want to thank them very much.
55:18And I trust that we continue to have a good fight
55:22and put the fight on.
55:24To you, my brother, I just want to let you know that
55:27God will continue to protect you and keep you.
55:29You're a good soldier, right?
55:31And I know that the police are doing their part,
55:33but best protection comes from God.
55:35I wish you all the best and may God continue to keep you, bro.
