00:22Differently abled people deserve to be safe and secure. This was the cry of a
00:27number of persons with disabilities who gathered outside HTC today calling for
00:32special housing accommodations. Renessa Cutting reports. We need help. There are
00:38persons who live in dangerous conditions, who live in dangerous places, who live in
00:43dilapidated buildings and we need urgent housing. They're differently abled and
00:50they're demanding an equitable quality of life. This need for special
00:55accommodation is reflected in one of the HTC's policies which states that 5%
01:01of its housing units would be allocated to senior citizens and people with
01:05disabilities. However the differently abled movement does not believe its
01:09members are getting their fair share. If we say one or two differently abled
01:15persons have gotten housing, is that enough? There's scores of differently
01:21abled persons that have applied years to just get someplace to sleep, someplace to
01:26call home to be safe and they are not being allocated homes. So today we are
01:33saying enough is enough and we need safe, affordable, accessible homes for
01:40differently abled persons. The movement met with the HTC officials today in a
01:45bid to not only secure housing for the differently abled but to ensure that
01:50they are fit for purpose. We need reasonable accommodation, wheelchair
01:54ramps and and what have you that differently abled persons of different
01:59conditions can access their homes. Rails and proper paintings and signs and braille.
02:07These are the things we are going to have talks with Miss Giselle McFarlane
02:13this morning. We are representing the wheelchair bound, the blind, the deaf,
02:19the dumb, the visually impaired of course and whoever have the disabilities
02:30that would not afford them to work and to receive income. We are here fighting
02:35on their behalf. Renassa Cutting, TV6 News. Well in the media release the
02:40Trinidad and Tobago Housing Development Corporation reaffirmed its commitment to
02:45equitable housing for differently abled citizens. Addressing claims of an
02:49adequate allocations raised by advocacy groups. The HTC stated that 46 housing
02:55units were allocated to individuals with disabilities in 2024 as part of its
03:00efforts to ensure inclusivity. Additionally ongoing projects such as
03:04Citrus Close and Edinburgh Towers have units designed for differently abled
03:09residents in line with the corporation's housing policies. At a meeting today HTC
03:15Managing Director Giselle McFarlane and other officials provided details on the
03:20allocation process, emphasizing fairness and transparency while addressing the
03:26concerns raised.
